White House deletes factual Tweet about presidential hurricanes

This makes you wonder what the White House sees as threatening about this information?

Goddard-tweet[1]

NYT’s Andrew Revkin points out the inanity of it:

Let’s do some fact checking.

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grover_Cleveland

Cleveland is the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms (1885–1889 and 1893–1897).

Grover Cleveland

24th President of the United States

Obama’s term is January 20th 2009 to present. Source

Now let’s check the hurricanes for these periods:

From this NOAA source:  http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/hurdat/All_U.S._Hurricanes.html

I’ve made screencaps of the two presidential terms of Grover Cleveland and totaled the numbers of hurricanes as listed by NOAA:hurricanes_grover_cleveland1

hurricanes_grover_cleveland2

I count 27, rather than Goddard’s  26 (Note: 27 if you include the 1888 TS that NOAA included in the list of hurricanes, I’m guessing some post facto revision of this “hurricane six“) but the point remains the same. During President Obama’s term, Jan 20th 2009 to present, there have been only three US landfalling hurricanes according to the same NOAA data:

obama_hurricanes

I find it interesting that NOAA puts in the disclaimer about Sandy, their exact disclaimer:

* – Indicates that the hurricane center did not make a U.S. landfall (or substantially weakened before making landfall), but did produce the indicated hurricane-force winds over land. In this case, central pressure is given for the time that the hurricane winds along the coast were the strongest.

Even though it didn’t make landfall, although it did affect the USA, but is listed, we will count it, Irene is also debatable, for weak wind speeds, but we’ll go with what NOAA says here.

The point is that there’s been far worse periods of US landfalling hurricanes during presidential terms, and that’s a fact.

Obama is also presiding over the longest ever period of major hurricane drought (Cat3 or greater) without making US landfall. From Dr. Roger Pielke Jr:

The graph above provides an update to data on the remarkable ongoing US “intense hurricane drought.” When the Atlantic hurricane season starts next June 1, it will have been 2,777 days since the last time an intense (that is a Category 3, 4 or 5) hurricane made landfall along the US coast (Wilma in 2005). Such a prolonged period without an intense hurricane landfall has not been observed since 1900.

Why is the White House afraid of these facts?

UPDATE: We’ll see how long my tweet lasts:

Godwin’s Law should be expanded to include variants of “we owe it to the children” or “do it for the children”.

Deja vu all over again.
The tweet by Goddard wasn’t deleted, its always on Goddard’s Twitter timeline.
Twitter can be confusing. Here is a link to a WUWT post that documents a very similar situation where Mr Watts was mistakenly under the impression that one of his tweets was deleted.

This sentence needs to be re-written:
“Obama is also presiding over the longest ever period of major hurricane (Cat3 or greater) to make US landfall. From Dr. Roger Pielke Jr:”
It doesn’t say what the writer thinks it says, or what they wanted to say, I am sure. And, as long as the message is delivered, just delete my post in moderation. Jes’ tryin’ to hep out…

It seems they deleted it from their White House site tweets which is possible but it still existed on Twitter. I was confused about that at first. It is still a sissy thing to do but not a sinister thing to do.

Oh – a variation on the old “double secret probation” trick … the WH removes it from THEIR twitter feed.
Right. Right. Understand now. PERFECTLY clear.
Thanks, Thyme and Thyme again.

I watched Sandy in real time and there were no hurricane-force winds on land. At the odd offshore bouy, yes, but not on land

Why should the Obama Adminstration be limited by facts now? They have been allowed to run rough shod over facts so far with no accountability or cost.

Does anybody on Earth understand Twitter?

It would appear no one does. This might be by design, or by poor planning at the outset; we will never know the truth … meanwhile, for opinion as to its (negative) value, I offer this as search terms: twitter uselessness

That is not what happened,
Twitter doesn’t show all the responses on an account’s timeline when a tweet gets hundreds or thousands of replies. Nothing nefarious happened here and Mr Goddard’s tweet to the president was always shown on Goddards timeline.

The listing shown has the Sept 1888 mark with ‘TS’. Is that for a tropical storm and not a ‘cane?
REPLY: Unsure why NOAA puts it in list of hurricanes, maybe historically it was called a hurricane, but was then downgraded later by NOAA after examination years later – A

Stop picking on Obama, he’s probably thinking post presidency. The green swindle is very lucrative for group thinking mediocrity. Think Al Gore 2.

Frank, that hits it right on the head. Sadly, many skeptics want a victory through a spaghetti chart while the basic truth of CAGW ignored or minimized. They’ve spent decades on toadstools and in the weeds playing this basic losing game with paid warming (Green fringe) operatives and very reluctant to state the political truth of the matter. Now when it counts they will behind the eight ball as a starting point.
Instead of insinuating the leftist cabal they all should have been on record to that fact years ago. Where are the political I.D. studies of the academic climate “consensus”??? There should be detailed lists of names and political contributions over decades at this point.
Now it’s blood on the highway and the skeptical advocates are neither on a message that will help shorter-term or address the Greenshirt reality we are living in.

Your count is off, a tropical storm is not a hurricane.

Maybe I should have asked instead: “How many angels can sit on the head of a pin?” *
Or perhaps you prefer a much more ‘crass’ answer (or questions) as given recently by H. R. Clinton before a congressional committee: “What difference, at this point, does it make?”.
Frankly, this ‘appearance’ Twitter gives of being able to ‘respond’ to any one 5 (or 10) ‘ranks’ (esp anyone in govt!!!!) above one’s present ‘pay grade’ is farcical; I rank it as supreme futile action (but, that’s just my take.)
.
* “In modern usage, this question also serves as a metaphor for wasting time debating topics of no practical value, or questions whose answers hold no intellectual consequence.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but the scientist and meteorologist that have “raised the alarm” weren’t primarily into the politics of the issue but the science. Many of them have stood against the bastardization of the science even though they may support the other positions of the politicians that are using it as a lever to promote a political agenda. If they’ve spoken up, give them a break (on this issue at least).

Obama, always invoking the little kid to push his schemes. He hasn’t the arguments to deal with adults.
Well, I am not so easily bullied as that. Do it for the kids he says.
POL POT, that Cambodian tyrant had little kids ratting out their loving parents and had the kids smother their own parents with plastic bags…in 1970s. Creepy… Using kids like that.

AW: I don’t think Obama really has a clue about atmospheric physics. He is just following what the team is telling him. He probably has never seen a chart of current temperatures or even ice extent. He probably does not have the time to do so. I personally do not think we should be attacking him. Also whether is a naturalized citizen is irrelevant. The romans had 6 “foreign”emperors its not an argument. In the end as I said here many years ago its the weather that will win the argument and it is winning viva los meteorologos! LOL

Yet another reason I have absolutely no interest in “twitter”. Like many other internet technologies, it gives you the ILLUSION that you are engaged in a conversation, when in fact you are not. Sure, Goddard’s comment was always visible to his own followers. But WH visitors won’t see it. That’s pretty much par, and in fact my own sites do similar. If I identify a spammer or other problem poster, they will see their own posts and assume others are, but nobody else sees them at all.
Disqus is, as I’ve learned, similar. The “moderator” for a disqus comment section can simply moderate out users, as CNN did when I attempted to comment on a climate issue.
Originally the internet appeared to give the people a voice. That was a horrifying concept to the gatekeepers of knowledge, who are now doing their best to counter that. This will get worse before it gets better.
