UN Climate Summit Includes Session On ‘Responsible Yachting’

The United Nations (UN) climate summit, known as COP28, featured a Tuesday discussion on sustainable yachting.

The discussion centered on finding “a variety of technical solutions developed to make the yachting experience more responsible and sustainable,” according to its official COP28 website. The event, titled “Responsible Yachting. Today & Tomorrow,” was moderated by Nico Rosberg, a yacht-owning former race car driver, and organized by Sunreef Yacht, a company that builds custom yachts and luxury vessels.

The discussion also included “a conversation about electric, hybrid and hydrogen propulsion, battery technology, plant-based composites, bottom paints, modern photovoltaics, sustainable interior finishing, water management, energy management (and) air conditioning,” according to the event’s COP28 website. (RELATED: Wagyu Burgers, Asian-French Fusion And More: Here’s What’s On The Menu At The UN Climate Confab)

The conference has already drawn criticism for being perceived as elitist and hypocritical, as thousands of  politicians and businesspeople have flown to an oil-rich state to find ways to advance a global green energy transition and alter peoples’ habits to better protect the environment.

“It just goes to show you that, at a time when these people are talking about telling poor countries to switch over to renewable energy, and people are starving, we also have folks driving the climate movement hosting ‘environmentally-friendly yachting’ panels,” Dan Kish, a senior research fellow for the Institute for Energy Research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “It’s absolutely classic… they tell everyone else to sacrifice while they host discussions on ‘sustainable yachting’ among themselves.”

Representatives for the UN did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

guide on responsible crapping?

We have already been given the solution. Stop eating.

Unless you are involved in installing solar panels, wind turbines, batteries and 80,000,000km of essential transmission lines, you are surplus to requirement and will not be able to afford to eat.

Any serious pivot to “renewables” will require the entire economic output of human civilisation. It is highly inflationary because it consumes more energy than it can provide so costs goes up and only those working on the transition or able to skim or sequester funds from the effort will be able to afford to eat.

No one asks where will we get all the energy required to build the windmills, solar panels, EVs and heat pumps?
We need billions of these things. We can’t use green energy because it doesn’t exist. So if we shut down oil, gas, and coal how to we build the green economy.

“sustainable yachting.”

Battersea Park has a boating lake with small rowing boats you can hire and that’s as close to yachting as I’m ever likely to get. This was quite clearly an elite discussion….

From Luxury Tribune:

“A sustainable superyacht sounds like somewhat of an oxymoron. Vessels designed for excess typically garner a bad rap when it comes to the environment. However, there has been immeasurable growth over the past five to ten years in the superyacht industry in terms of innovation and technology, as well as stronger demand from buyers and those chartering yachts.”
https://www.luxurytribune.com/en/the-rise-of-sustainable-yachting

It’s all about the optics of their largesse

“Nearly every major yacht builder and charter company has committed to protecting the environment by creating philanthropic foundations or partnering with existing organizations doing good.”

And they have help…

“Our education programme brings the industry up to speed with sustainability and empowers attendees to make impactful changes within their own organisations”
https://waterrevolutionfoundation.org/

What was that about the little people? Oh yes, they’ll have to learn to make do with a lot less….

Yachting is extremely pleasurable most of the time (except during bad weather). But yachting is the poster child for “conspicuous consumption” that only the upper middle class to wealthy can afford to engage in. Yachting by definition is not and cannot be “responsible” – it is simply pleasurable. I suppose a yacht could be called “less irresponsible”, but they’re all massive vessels, compared to small pleasure craft, consuming vast amounts of materials and labor to produce, maintain, and operate them. The old saying amongst boaters is “A boat is a hole in the ocean into which you pour all your money”. That is, if you have money to spare. I love boats and being on the water, so I am not anti-boat, but boats and especially yachts are clearly luxury goods.

Those in the yachting industry may recall fiberglass blisters. It almost killed fiberglass for boatbuilding and shifted a lot of boats to aluminum.
The blisters first appeared around the time the EPA mandated a change in the resin to make it safer. To cut the cancer risk from harsh chemicals.
Others blamed the oil embargo, but in any case it was/is a nightmare.

I found this note which supports the idea that blistering was a result of the EPA:

“The culprit turned out to be an unannounced change by a supplier to a water soluble catalyst.”

I just spent a couple of days on my roof working on the 3 tab fiberglass asphalt shingles. The roof was installed about 20 years ago and I have had problems with it from about the time the installer’s warranty expired.

The tabs didn’t properly and securely adhere to the sealing strips.

Now, in Las Vegas, with our high wind storms, roofing companies will not install 3 tab shingles any more, only the newer, more expensive, “architectural” type asphaltic shingles.

For years, including the roofs I replaced on 2 homes, three tab shingles sealed and then lasted up to 30 years, even in the Las Vegas heat and sun. Just to clarify how hot the roofs get, you could not walk on them in the heat of the day in summer without damaging the surface.

Now how could a product that worked FINE for 70 years of more suddenly no longer be suitable for the Mojave desert? Well, I blame the EPA. I have no proof, but I have no doubt that they forced some change in the sealing strip chemicals that caused the rooves to not seal together as of old.

Just sayin.

There is a well known British billionaire pension fund plunderer that owns at least 4 yachts stationed in marinas at all the best locations in the med so he doesn’t need to burn any of that nasty diesel to enjoy life on the water, he just flies from one to another on his private jet. There’s sustainability for you. And if he doesn’t have one in the next luxury resort he wants to visit, he’ll have the crew move one from another location whilst he waits in Monaco or wherever. But at least he’s freeing up hotel accommodation for the poor millionaires, that must count for something.

December 6, 2023 7:20 am

The solution my wife and I chose when we needed to have a moveable home to enable us to do humanitarian work in the Caribbean was a sailing catamaran. Don’t be fooled, nearly 100% of sailboats of all kinds have diesel engines, diesel generators, and gasoline outboards for the dinghy. But for sailor, the wind is truly free and I have sailed the Bahamas to North Carolina on zero cups of diesel fuel. My son sailed Mayaguana Island (Bahamas) to Puerto Rico on the same amount.

Anyone familiar with the major yachting ports has seen the special docks set aside for the mega-yachts. In my experience, the owners are only aboard, actually using the ship, during the local high season when other mega-yacht owners are likely to be in town. Otherwise, the full-time crew care for the ship, and entertain themselves in off-duty hours. There is a whole culture of mega-yacht crews living and working on these kajillion dollar boats — they stick to their own crowd meeting up over and over in the Caribbean and then the Med. Those I’ve talked to say it is a good life if you don’t have or want a family of your own. Every one of them, male or female, are beautiful, even the engineers and grease-monkeys.

Because a gazillionaire sure can’t have ugly grease monkeys spoiling their view, even in the engineering spaces.

There are standards that MUST be maintained at that LEVEL of society.

I would guess the same can be said of the crews of their private jets, both the social aspect and the “beauty” aspect.

Drake ==> Of course, wouldn’t expect anything less. Many of the crew have “posh” accents that speak of private schools in England, Switzerland, etc. Occasionally, one finds a mega-yacht captain who demands competent below-decks crew — snipes, cooks, electricians and electronics people. The above-decks crew look down on them, because, well, what do you expect from people like “that”?

I’m probably being a bit simple here, but to me, a yacht is a boat with masts and sails powered by the wind. They can be made of wood and the sails from cloth. If they want “responsible yachting” there’s the answer.

Dena
December 6, 2023 9:30 am

I have never owned any type of boat and I fly no more than once a year. In 70 year I probably have taken around 10 air trips. My auto trips are carefully planned for the shortest route and as few trips as possible.
Who are they to complain about me when they have yachts and private aircraft. I don’t mind them having them, I do mind the holier than thou attitude. At least in the United State, we select our government and if the government fails to preform to our satisfaction, we have the right to replace it. Maybe out leaders should read the constitution and if they don’t want to do their duty, look for work elsewhere. From what I understand there is a labor shortage in the private sector but I suspect they wouldn’t last long as they probably don’t have the education for much more than physical labor.
