1.5C global warming breach likely as Australia defends Pacific climate talks

The prime minister has defended the number of leaders attending a high-profile climate meeting in the Pacific Islands, as a United Nations report warns the world will breach the 1.5C global warming benchmark within the next five years.

The federal government had initially wanted world leaders to attend pre-COP next month, ahead of the main climate talks in Türkiye in November.

Reports said Australia was struggling to convince leaders outside the Pacific to attend a special meeting in Tuvalu, before Fiji’s foreign minister, Sakiasi Ditoka, gave the first public account of those going.

He said Antigua and Barbuda, Cabo Verde, Thailand, Maldives and Timor-Leste had so far agreed to send leaders to the event, and Germany, Mexico and South Korea will send ministers.

The prime minister also voiced his displeasure with the line of questioning.

“You are being so disrespectful to the Pacific leaders who are here,” he said.

“We need to actually have some respect for the process and respect for our Pacific leaders, and Australia has an absolute interest in engaging with the Pacific.”

What can I say? I can’t believe they’re still pushing forward with this diplomatic embarrassment. I wish I had the time to attend in person, I’m sure it’s even funnier to watch up close.

This failed climate conference, if anyone bothers to remember, will stand in history as the turning point when national leaders stopped even pretending they care about climate change.

Will they have the meeting in or underwater as is customary for the Tuvalu Foreign Minister when speaking of climate issues and will they be discussing the island’s increasing land area (~180 acres so far)?

As far as I know, the reef corals keep up with sea level rises quite nicely.

I’m beginning to think these climate grifters and some politicians have toys in their heads. I can see the climate clown car pull up and all these people climb in to journey off to the next worthless COP or a meeting such as this both of which accomplish nothing and which rational scientists and increasingly the public ignores. Most posters here know which governments are the lead of the clown car and are decimating their economies.

You’re spot on. This is one of the reasons why they gather in Bonn every year for the climate talks. Bonn is a comparatively quiet place in its own right, but it is very close to Cologne, which is home to the largest brothel in Europe (aka Pascha)—let alone the abundance of other types of nightlife. Commuting between Bonn and Cologne is extremely easy and convenient. BTW, the IPCC likes convening its meetings in Bangkok, where it has already held plenty of them. Nothing personal, though—just an observation.

In reality, most people who live in cities have experienced urban warming of +2C above the global average for decades. Did they notice? The IPCC is just a failed climate advocacy propaganda unit run by the UN socialist community; it’s time to pension them off as they have nothing good to say about our democratic future based for now on fossil fuels and the promise new better technology.

Meanwhile, out in the real world:

1) Individual years, like 2024, already spiked past 1.5°C with an average around 1.55°C (ref: https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/science/climate-issues/degrees-matter ),

2) A recent UNEP Report warns that the long-term average will cross 1.5°C in the next few years (ref: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/press-release/unep-world-set-cross-15degc-global-warming-can-still-limit-adapt-and )

The truth is out there . . . somewhere.

Maybe it’s to be found on the pristine shores of Tuvalu, assuming they haven’t been swallowed up by sea-level rise, which of course would be just one more reason to not hold a “special meeting” in that remote location. /sarc

Once again, claims such as this above and Al Gore’s famous, should be required to “pay the piper” when their claims don’t percolate. For example, the United Nations here should agree to fold and close shop if they are wrong. <– this process gives some credence and responsibility to their position, else it’s just more Al Gore-ish talk; i.e. bullshit and lies. They’ve lied, lied, lied before, why believe them now or ever again? I don’t want to ever hear anything from the U.N. again. Hard to be possible, but they are worse than the League of Nations ever was.
Put up or shut up, alarmists.

This report excites our interest in these Meetings but leaves confusion re its timing (October 5-8) & location(s) — “from Tuvalu (Funafuti) to Nadi (Fiji) is approximately 650 mi./1,050 km” — in relation to COP31 – Türkiye – Antalya (Nov 9-20?), can that be correct?
Really, one needs to mark these on the travel calendar!

Any potential no-shows just need to know that if they take attendance, and no one responds “here” or “present”, then they will be marked Absent, and this will go on their Permanent Record. So, they might want to think about that.
