Geologist Ian Plimer says the world is not going through a crisis of energy, but is going through a “crisis of common sense”.
Crisis of common sense it is, and with too many elected representatives the herd mentality prevails, but this herd gallops away from the safe haven of energy security leaving valuable reserves of gas, oil, black and brown coal, uranium, thorium and molten salts, shale oil locked away by refusing to approve applications for development of resources.
Where are the engineering reports and cost-benefit analysis for wind and solar to replace fossil fuelled generators of electricity?
Why is emissions-free nuclear energy so often rejected and banned, or closed down?
One answer was provided by now former UN Official Christiana Figurers who at a meeting in October 2015 just before the IPCC Paris Conference admitted that climate was not the real issue, that being to wreck capitalism, free enterprise free market system that has provided economic prosperity, as the world has known it.
[Invalid email-mod]
I read some of the utter garbage Christiana Figures was spouting while at the Durban Climate Change Conference in 2011. Clearly she was one of the most unreliable people to trust on the subject of climate.
or any subject, for that matter…
Yes the UN and its acolytes such as the IPCC, the UNFCC etc. have all been well infiltrated by the Leftwing/ Marxist activists these days, with the output from the IPCC essentially being a pack of subtle misinformation leading up to the Falsity of the CAGW MEME which has gone viral.
I’ve been saying this for years but it is just treated as a swivel- eyed conspiracy theory to be roundly platformed along with a rich variety of ad Hom remarks. In days of yore I would have been burnt at the stake. Fortunately they are not allowed to do that anymore.
I believe it’s still allowed if you purchase sufficient carbon offsets.
they will probably have a CO2 allowance for burning heretics!
There are plenty of reports but they are peppered with hopium:
Sun shines 24/7 somewhere
Wind blows 24/7 somewhere
Power supply can be demand managed
Green hydrogen will replace natural gas
So-called Moores Law applies and the costs will tumble while capability multiplies
It’s a crisis of mental health [in many]
“I knew about the psychological coping strategies we used to manage feelings of anxiety, despondency and grief (I wrote about them in 2010). But how does one cope with the fact there are people in our community who worked doggedly to stop Australia responding to the unfolding crisis and are still at it”?

Another nutter that believes in the bovine excrement
Me?
You are barking matey
I’m no Australian for a start
no the author of the guardian article
Glad to hear it, thanks for clearing that up.
What a load of dribble. None of what you fear is supported by statistics or facts. Monsoonal Asia floods and when money that was meant to go to dams and other infrastructure is diverted by systemic corruption bad things happen. That’s not Climate change its poor governance and utterly normal weather. Summer droughts happen in Europe too. As the Elbe hunger stones show.
The only people who are in denial are the climate scientists and the deluded fools who have destriyed their energy systems by following their advice who are currently finding out that denying reality and acting on fantasy never ends well.
Any Economist or Engineer that believes in the solutions you support to a non existant problem are either irrational or following the money. Most likely the later because 10 minutes a pencil and an envelope is all you need to figure out the solution doesnt work.
What a faux pas
I said they’re mentally unbalanced and provided a quote showing that.

A moments reading the post would tell you that the guy posting it is not an alarmist. You need to apologise to fretslider
So, what’s your degree in, Mr Guy-Johnson? Dentistry?
“None of what you fear is supported by statistics or facts. ” – Langwog Reply to fretslider
I didn’t fear or support any of it, you think I did? That is deeply troubling. You’ll get sceptics a bad name.
You are attacking someone who’s supporting you.
One minute of geologist Ian Plimer is not enough.
His 2009 book, Heaven and Earth, is one of the best on climate science
I believe this Richard Lindzen Ph.D. quote is on the back cover:
Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st century’s developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and, on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a roll-back of the industrial age.
Richard Lindzen
After 25 years of following the climate junk science, I see climate change
as a strategy to enable authoritarian governments to control the private sector, through control of their energy use. The goal appears to be world Marxism, not saving the planet for the children. It’s the best way they can sell totalitarianism — create fear of the future climate. Fear sends people to their governments demanding that they “do something”. They are doing something. And it’s not very pleasant. The Covid lockdowns were just a warm-up for the climate lockdowns. The elite, however, will not suffer — they will rule.
The global warming/climate change/climate emergency arose with the fall of the Soviet Union. The cockroaches had to scramble for a new grift.
Exactly! The timing is uncanny. Elites have long known that to control the peeps, they must keep an enemy (real or imagined) front and center.
It worked in 2020 in the U.S., with orchestrated BLM/Antifa riots and CHICOM viris biowarfare, along with a few FBI nudges along the way. While many people don’t care for Trump on a personal level, what he really represents is a populist uprising against the Marxist/socialist march through the institutions of power. The people MUST NOT SUCCEED at any cost, thought the totalitarians. Tea Party made some inroads, but Trump actually made it to the White House.
Antifa and BLM suddenly disappeared when Biden took office. I do not think that was a coincidence. I’ve been around long enough now to see when “protesting” happens, and its always when a democrat is out of office in the White House.
The alarmists aren’t just contemplating the roll back of the industrial age, they are demanding it.
I remember one leftists that I debated back in college. He was utterly convinced that the worst mistake mankind ever made, was developing agriculture.
Norman Borlaug is no longer available for comment about his Nobel and for having caused the first and genuine “Green Revolution.”
Well said Richard .
You have hit the bulls eye .
Back in the late 80s some scientists had concerns that man could be adding to much CO2 to the atmosphere .
I met John Maunder from New Zealand who attended the first two climate conferences in Villach ,Austria and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when the UNIPCC was formed .
There was no problem or proof then and there is still no proof that the worlds weather is affected by CO2 .
Climate change was seen by many as a way to control people as long as those pushing the lies were free to live their lives in luxury .
It has been admitted by many of these crooks that global warming is being used to destruct the free market systems in free countries and impose Socialism or Communism in its place .
The proof is that if this so called crisis was real these raucous voices would be advocating Nuclear as the solution to the worlds energy needs .
They don’t and that is proof that they want to make us all poorer and they have another agenda.
Agree. I have the book.
Quote:”the world is not going through a crisis of energy, but is going through a “crisis of common sense”.
I told you so, in several of the first few comments I ever put into here.
I initially thought ‘alcohol consumption’ as the Climate Change affliction affects rich western boozy countries but, with one notable exception – ain’t that right Vladimir?
But then in the search for a mental issue, you realise 2 particular things
You might also add that modern girls are finding it extremely difficult, to the point of not having any babies at all, of not finding ‘a mate‘ with a Good Sense Of Humour
i.e. A male with a quick wit, agile mind, good memory, decisiveness, empathy not very least, self confidence ##.
= Someone who does not sit on the fence, does not appeal to other authorities, does not become a gang-member and does not Pass Bucks. Lukewarmers need not apply
That is what Plimer is alluding to – he calls it Common Sense..
yeah ok, but the GSOH is what is really lacking.
And it’s lacking is due to what be ordinarily called: Starvation
Or especially, a surplus of Serotonin (and sugar) between the ears and lack of all the things that really ‘makes humans tick‘
It is quite rather serious this time.
## We all love to point and laugh at the pictures of The German Delegation pointing and laughing at Mr Trump, some little while ago at what conference they were all at. As he suggested they (Germany and Europe) were being rather silly depending on Russian Gas
Did you notice how the delgation wasn’t ‘all male’
You saw that the boys were laughing at Mr Trump
Did you notice that the girls weren’t laughing?
In Mr Trump, The Girls saw something completely different to what the boys saw
geddit?
You’re nuts. As scientifically illiterate as the climate alarmists
Mr Ad-Hom strikes again.
Double-barrelled establishment bolleaux
Who cares if he’s right.
That is the only sensible comment that you have written DGJ
They say chicks dig the bad boys….
I personally enjoy Peta’s comments. They’re somewhat cryptic but bring a refreshing, slightly off center perspective. Reading them twice helps.
I also have some concerns as to whether Peta herself is writing about a lack of GSOH in eligible partners from personal experience or not? Still, ya gotta larf, right?
Let us set up a theoretical system where there are feedbacks, In this system there are positive feedbacks, that tend to move the core values further and further away from the stable, and there are negative feedbacks, which tend to bring the core values closer to what is stable.
Anyone disagree so far (except pedants)
Now tell me what happens if the negative feedbacks are removed?
OK, let us now say that the system is public discourse, that the positive feedbacks are those people who like to “embellish” the news as the spread it (we know who they are) and that the negative feedback is given by people who tend to focus on the facts, on the evidence, are … they are sceptics.
Now, tell me what happens, when the sceptics are silenced … yes … the loss of “common sense”. In other words the system of social discourse goes nutty, which all kinds of silly ideas starting to spread without any means to stop them … because the sceptics are silenced.
That is what Google, and those that followed Google in their repression of scepticism did. They got rid of the critical negative feedbacks that tend to keep public discourse firmly mixed to what we call “common sense” … and instead we get hysteria spreading exponentially as we saw with covid.
The only renewable sources of energy are coal, oil, gas, hydro and nuclear. And let’s not forget wood, Europe will be embracing wood this coming winter. Solar and wind are failures. Period. Full sop.
Please explain how coal, gas and oil are renewable?
Given sufficient energy, they can be synthesised from their combustion products 🙂
Strictly, fission isn’t renewable over sufficiently long time spans, either.
Even fusion isn’t strictly renewable because of entropy.
So in theory everything is renewable. But in reality?
There’s a great Yogi Berra quote:
“In theory, there’s no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is”.
I knew what you meant, but it just seemed interesting that you didn’t exclude nuclear from the “renewable” list, It’s much more difficult to create Uranium and the usable trans-Uranics than it is to reverse the exothermic reactions of oxidising carbon and hydrocarbons.
Gotta say that YB quote is very clever.
It’s one of the better ones 🙂
Why would I waste time explaining reality to a self-delusional idiot like you, simple?
“Why would I waste time explaining reality …”
Because it gives you an excuse to hide your ignorance maybe? Or is it that you are the only one here who thinks you are right? Who knows, but I do know you are 100% wrong trying to proclaim that coal and oil are renewable. What was it you said about self-delusional?
And you prove yet again that you refuse to accept reality. Oh, and up voting your own comments is typical for you.
“Europe will be embracing wood this coming winter.”
Resorting to burniing wood. Europe is going backwards. The Europeans should elect common-sense politicians next time, and get rid of their current batch of clueless politicians. The ones who got Europe in this situation to begin with.
Wait till they are importing animal dung from African counties. Top dollar per pound, and they will happily pay it just to stay warm.
I see you have changed the subject. So no evidence coal and oil are renewable? Well that is a surprise….. And yet you got 11 up votes for that entirely wrong post. Are none of those 11 going to come to your aid or are they just happy to support any old nonsense as long as it pushes the skeptical dogma?
You are too stupid to follow a conversation between adults, as you keep proving.
The average German says: I pay the taxes, the government must provide all the rest. This is the complete loss of responsibility. In the past without effort there was not food on the table, now people live in a bubble, and give for granted things that are not. They think the government is omnipotent and somehow can solve any problem. So if politics promises green energy why shouldn’t the average German believe it? So, this is the loss of common sense. Desired by the politics desired by the average citizen: problems mean stress, if you can delegate to the government then you live without stress. And the few smart politicians accept to promise the impossible in order to keep their chair by mean of which they make a lot of money…
Altruism seems to be a lost attribute.
This is my biggest fear in America. The people have adopted this idea that the role of government is to take care of the people. The U.S. became an independent country specifically to get away from that idea, knowing that people can take care of themselves if they have three things: security, opportunity, and education. I wish we could get back to moving in that direction but the momentum towards government dependence I fear is too great now.
Soon, everthing will be powered by electricity and government will control the on/off switch.
Education in its 20th-21st century form was never envisioned by the founders. I haven’t done a word search, but I doubt that the word education appears, at least not prominently, in the Declaration or Constitution. If they were alive today viewing the status of what some call “education,” the Founders would likely have also included an education establishment clause:
”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of education, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”
“Soon, everthing will be powered by electricity and government will control the on/off switch.”
Bingo!
It’s NOT a ‘crisis of common sense’. If I was earning lots of money from selling people miniscule amounts of energy at fantastic prices i’d be supporting renewable energy too.
There seems to be a belief that companies are in the business of providing better goods for people at ever cheaper prices. This is not true. It was true while technology was advancing rapidly in the 1980s/90s, but not any more.
Pharmaceutical companies want to sell continuous vaccinations rather than cheap drugs which can treat Covid. Enterpreneurs want to get grants to build wind-farms which had a guaranteed profit. This is not because the world is short of common sense – it’s because the activists have taken over al the decision-making processes, and are milking the system.
Nonsense. It’s been true since the the early 1800s, not just the 80s and 90s. You’re as nuts as the climate alarmists
I’m not at all sure that leaving out earlier examples of corporate monopolies because they were irrelevant makes me nuts – and the other readers seem to agree with me….
Your paranoia regarding companies has never been true. Competition forces companies to strive to make better products for less money. If they don’t, companies that do will take all of the market. The only time when this stops, is when government eliminates competition.
Or when the companies take over the government and eliminate competition. Where were the companies selling cheap ivermectin?
There are various situations where natural monopolies or oligopolies occur. In time the oligopolies will collapse to a monopoly, but it may take quite some time.
Government actions can alleviate or exaggerate this.
These oligopolies do not need to collapse any longer.
When there are only two or three players in a market (pharmaceuticals are a great example), then there is not true competition. The innovator sets the market price and the other companies with similar products just match that price. Example – Ozempic, Victoza, Trulicity, etc are all priced within a very narrow range around $10-11K per year.
If there were true competition, the later arrivals would set a lower price to gain market share thus driving down the price. This does not happen today. Instead, the new arrivals match current market prices then battle to become the preferred product on various PBMs. The PBMs calls the monetary agreements to become “preferred” as “rebates”. The real world calls them bribes..
They also engage in consumer driven demand for pharmaceuticals through advertising. Over 70% of all TV ad revenue is now from pharmaceutical companies. Once again, they do not compete on price.
Agreed, the ‘normal’ business theory of supply and demand falters when government creates a false demand driven by BS policies with rewarding subsidies.
I am seeing this personally, husband’s family seems to have a rare bonus, they do not put down plaque in their arteries. He has it, his sister has it, and our daughter is also blessed. Is anybody interested in researching it NO. Why because the Drug companies fund all the research, they are going to make so much more money from the drugs rather than finding a small genetic tweek that might solve the problem, My husband has offered a blood test or whatever is required to do the research. I have been curious as a genealogist and can see in one branch of the family there seems to be alot of 90+ and I wonder.
It’s easy to think that this is just big bad drug companies more interested in profit than saving lives. But this is really a free market at work, to the extent that the drug industry is really a free market after all the government intervention.
It takes money to research new drugs, most that don’t pan out. Drug companies have to find new drugs to make enough money to remain in business and fund further research. The idea that a genetic tweak is going to be easy to package and to use to save lives is dreaming. There may be something there but it is very unlikely to pan out in any significant way. Genetic tweaks are not something that we can easily give someone else. So big drug companies can’t afford to waste time on that kind of research.
This is where smaller companies could enter to see if there is something that they can monetize. But the research is going to proceed slowly because the expected payoff is not really there right now and it is not apparent that it will ever be. So it is good that your family has some predisposition to being healthy, but it may not be something that can be sold to others. It’s unfortunate but it is what it is in the same way that we know many genetic diseases but we can not fix the genetic component of that disease easily.
Here is another view from the Netherlands:
‘There is no energy crisis in Europe, there is a crisis of leadership!’ says Eva Vlaardingerbroek (Sep 7, 2022)
It isn’t a failure of common sense because it isn’t a failure to understand. This is a deliberate policy.
Hear, hear!!
“Common sense ain’t common.”
Will Rogers
Ain’t it the truth!
It is socialists waging war on our societies. It has been going on for a while and it will not stop on its own.
“It is socialists waging war on our societies.”
Yes, that’s the Big Picture. That’s what we are up against.
That about sums it up perfectly. People who think they are “fighting climate change” are convinced that they can change the weather. Native populations used to dance and make sacrifices to do that. Now, modern day people dance around on TV and tell others to make sacrifices.
I think it’s it’s a crisis of disregarding the separation of powers. Legislatures and executive branches of government are making up harms and render guilty judgements, (like a harm to the future generations or harms to the planet or harm to the climate, etc) then they make-up resolution of the harms. Legislatures and executive branches become judge, jury and executioner.
Harms must be kept to provable harms in a court of law – harms done to actual people or their property and brought by people in actual legal standing. Everything the Left does to societies is done by first violating the separation of powers and assuming the judicial powers of prosecuting and rending judgements what they claim to be harms in an extra-judicial manner by legislatures or executives. Those bodies don’t need any of the safeguards that the judicial branch has nor do they have to even consider what legal harm actual is in a free society. Which is the very reason there is a separation of the judicial branch from the other branches in the first place.
This guy is right on the money. It has to be explained in the simplest language possible that we have been lied to and cheated by the green devils and that they have not made the case for CAGW with anything close to proper scientific evidence. It is time for the lying and cheating to stop.
At some point the protests against the “elite” need to turn into flying Lead!
