Late last year, Arla Foods began a trial of Bovaer in 30 farms across the country. At the time, according to BBC Very Iffy, the company claimed the additive could reduce methane emissions from cows by 30-45%. News of the trial caused consternation among some and led to a boycott of some Arla products. The manufacturer of Bovaer, DSM-Firmenich said these people were the subject of mistruths and misinformation and the product was “totally safe” for use.
Meanwhile, Bovaer was mandated to use across Denmark in early October this year and there have been many reports that the additive is damaging to livestock, prompting an investigation by the Danish government. By pure coincidence, Arla announced in early November it had stopped the British trial and was evaluating the results.
How did we get into this position of endemic bovine stupidity? Let’s dig in.
Net Zero Emissions
At root, this whole controversy is a story about Net Zero. The climate alarmists are concerned that methane concentrations in the atmosphere measured in parts per billion are having a devastating effect on the climate. This prompted organisations like UK FIRES to call for beef and lamb consumption to fall by 50% by 2030 and be eliminated altogether by 2050.
In its Seventh Carbon Budget the Climate Change Committee (CCC) was less draconian, calling for a 25% reduction in overall meat consumption by 2040 and 35% by 2050 compared to 2019 levels. Within this, it expects a steeper 40% reduction in red meat by 2050. CB7 also calls for a 27% reduction in the number of cattle and sheep by 2040 and a 38% reduction by 2050. It calls for these reductions even while noting that methane emissions “are already 62% lower than they were in 1990”.
Carbon Cycle
The alarmist narrative is driven by a misunderstanding of the carbon cycle. Cows and other ruminants have roamed the earth for thousands of years. For instance, there were about 60 million bison in North America in the 18th century, compared to about 87 million cattle in the US at the beginning of 2024. Somehow these bison did not manage to cause runaway global warming.
This is because of the cattle grazing carbon cycle (see Figure 1).

Cows eat grass and methane released from cow belches and rotting manure is released into the atmosphere. The methane oxidises to CO2 quite quickly and then is reabsorbed by grass through photosynthesis. The grass grows and stores the carbon in its leaves and root systems. The cows then eat the grass and the cycle begins again.
Although methane is emitted during the cycle, it is then reabsorbed, so the net effect on the climate is negligible.
Impact of Methane in the Atmosphere
In addition, the concern about methane in the atmosphere is overblown (see Figure 2).

As can be seen, the absorption frequencies of methane are almost entirely covered by the absorption frequencies of water vapour. The average concentration of water vapour in the atmosphere is about 0.25%, or about 2,500 parts per million. By contrast, methane concentration is about 1,900 parts per billion, or more than three orders of magnitude lower than water vapour. The idea that a change in methane concentration will have an impact on climate when its absorption frequencies are already saturated by water vapour is absurd.
Bovaer Impact on Cows
Now we turn to the impact of Bovaer on livestock. Back in 2024, the Danish Centre for Food and Agriculture produced a paper setting out the impact of Bovaer on methane emissions and milk productivity.
The paper documented five experiments on Danish cow herds. The reporting of the results is not quite consistent, with some focusing just on methane reduction and others also including the impact on Energy Corrected Milk Yield (ECM) (see Figure 3).

Both Johnson experiments showed reductions in methane emissions of about a third, with corresponding reductions in ECM of a similar magnitude. The Kjeldsen experiment reduced methane emissions by nearly a quarter but was silent on the impact on milk yields. The first Maigaard paper showed an 18-23% reduction in methane emissions and simply recorded an unquantified negative impact on milk yields. The second Maigaard paper showed a reduction of between 31% and 34% in methane yield and zero to 5% reduction in ECM depending upon Bovaer dosage. It is noteworthy that none of the experiments got anywhere near the high-end 45% reduction in methane emissions claimed by DSM-Firmenich.
Another meta-study by Pupo et al. concluded that 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), the active ingredient of Bovaer, reduced methane emissions by 27.9% but a dairy with 1,000 cows would need to be compensated by $128,320 per year to cover the cost of the additive and loss of milk yield.
We can only wonder at the bovine stupidity that would mandate the introduction of an additive that reduces milk yields almost as much as emissions. To get the same output, we would need more cows and have almost the same total emissions, but of course at much greater cost.
Bovaer Safety Data Sheet
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for Bovaer leads to additional concerns. It shows Bovaer causes serious eye damage, skin irritation and is suspected of damaging fertility. If the product gets in the eyes, users are recommended to immediately call a Poison Centre and rinse with water for several minutes.
This calls into question DSM-Firmenich’s claim that Bovaer is “totally safe” to use.
The Danish Experience
The Farmers Guardian has reported health issues in Danish cows being fed with Bovaer. The Danish Government made the feeding of Bovaer in herds of over 50 cows compulsory on October 1st 2025. On these farms, Bovaer must be added to the cow’s ration for at least 80 days a year. Farmers have said that their cows have suffered from issues including fever and diarrhoea, fertility performance has been impacted and in some instances farmers have reported cows have collapsed and died. Maybe the suspicion of fertility issues in the SDS can soon be confirmed as fact.
A farmer described Bovaer as a poison, noting an explosion in digital dermatitis and higher somatic cell counts. Higher somatic cell counts indicate lower milk quality and suggest udder infection. When he stopped adding Bovaer to their feed, cow health showed huge signs of improvement and somatic cell count fell by 20% two days later.
Danish farmer Kent Nielsen took to X with a video complaining that since starting feeding his cows with Bovaer on October 1st his cows have suffered from diarrhoea, gut paralysis and milk fever. He also reported losing 3kg of milk per cow. He has since stopped administering Bovaer after consulting a vet.
Mr Neilsen’s profile on X also documents many instances of what he terms “Bovaerpoison” on other farms, including the death of calves.
Who could have guessed that messing with the digestive processes of cattle would impact their health?
Conclusions
The climate alarmists have made no secret of the fact they want to reduce meat consumption and cull our livestock herds. They have a mistaken belief that methane emissions from cows are damaging the climate, without considering full carbon cycle of ruminant herds.
The mad rush to Net Zero has caused an outbreak of bovine stupidity amongst our ruling classes. They have come up with Bovaer as a dangerous solution that cuts yields as well as emissions to a non-existent problem of cow flatulence. It is hardly surprising that tampering with the digestive processes of cows would harm their health. Some say that the purpose of a system is what it does, so maybe they see the imposition of Bovaer as an easy way to reduce the number of cows on farms. In effect, we must sacrifice the cows to appease the weather gods. We can only hope that Arla does the right thing and decides not to extend the Bovaer trial into the wider farming community.

It’s not mentioned in the article, but … Nitrooxypropanol is part of the structural class of organic nitrates, which release nitrous oxide (NO) in the bloodstream. A well known example is nitroglycerin (Trinitrooxyglycerol) which is used in patients with angina pectoris to temporarily widen the coronal arteries of the heart (NO is a vasodilator). These compounds probably also have cardiovascular effects which aren’t mentioned on livestock.
Regarding the methane cycle: biomass is degraded by soil bacteria and results in methane emissions. The half-life of methane is very short. The grass will be degraded anyway sooner or later, whether a cow eats it or not. Dead leaves in forests in autumn also generate methane. Should we then chop down all the trees? It’s absolutely insane.
Just a chemistry nomenclature correction, NO is nitric oxide (a vasodilator). N2O is nitrous oxide (laughing gas). 3-NOP is supposed to break down into nitrate in ruminants, though some NO is likely formed. All of these can have multiple effects.
” which release nitrous oxide (NO) in the bloodstream”
That made me giggle.
You’re right: the NO is probably generated within the smooth muscle cells of the vessel wall after metabolism of these organic nitrates.
I prefer HELL NO.
I think the system is more interested in turning us vegetarian more than saving the world from methane. Somehow, the powers that be have decided that people on a vegetarian diet are easier to control. Possibly through the unavailability of food, possibly enforced by decree.
I note with interest that the later the study the less the reported reduction in milk yields. Hidden agenda again.
But growth hormone to increase milk production…..
Not in the UK…. so buy British beef while you can!
Holy bovine emissions I just had a brain fart! Sack the IPCC and all those limited craniums we just need to ask AI exactly where we’re at with the weather-
The Milankovitch Cycles That Could Push Earth Into A Drastic Climate Reset | Watch
“we just need to ask AI “
Well, I won’t be doing that.
Are you sure you don’t mean Milkovitch cycles?
It’s an AI. That’s who you should ask.
But DuckDuckGo knows Milankovitch cycles, and Milkovitch is some fictional character’s name.
See, where they went wrong with this treatment was calling it “totally safe”.
Now, if they had called it “safe and effective”, it would have been made compulsory by governments for use all around the world
Even cows would have been incuded in such an edict.
If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. The trouble is alarmists see climate breakdown whenever and wherever they look.
“Since our 2024 climate pledge, there has been a global pushback against green progress. This update reflects the urgent and growing challenges facing our planet – and how the Guardian is more focused than ever on exposing the causes of the climate crisis” – Grauniad
“experts have told the BBC that the additive “does not pose any food safety issues”. – BBC
Quite simply, if anyone criticises the “product” they are automatically peddling dis/misinformation.
“Despite prior testing, the real-world application of the mandate has yielded disturbing results. Since the October 1 implementation, the Danish Dairy Farmers’ Association has been inundated with calls from distressed farmers. The reports describe a consistent and alarming pattern: cows losing coordination and collapsing, developing high fevers and severe diarrhea, and suffering from inflamed udders. Milk production has plummeted by 20 to 40 percent in affected herds. Most tellingly, farmers report that when Bovaer is removed from the feed, the animals’ conditions improve within days, only to deteriorate again if the additive is reintroduced. “ – Environ News
Everybody knows by now where the BBC is at…
“experts have told the BBC that the additive “does not pose any food safety issues”.
In the US, we say: If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it!
In [older] London you would say.. if ain’t broke, dahnt fix it.
But then, we would throw BBC experts down the apples and pairs.
Not the apples and pears?
Yes IPhone malfunction
Operator error.
I hope the BBC goes broke, and that they have to fix it …
In US politics, it’s “if it ain’t broke, break it. Then promise to fix it if you’re elected”
The first thing every bureaucrat wants is to expand his budget, number of subordinates, and regulations issued. Any decline in regulations issued implies the problem is solved, mission accomplished, and the bureaucrat has solved the problems that created his job, which is the last thing any bureaucrat wants.
This was ‘trialed’, right, like the nRNA shots we humans were injected with?
Trialed?
Right?
They did trial lockdown.
Dunno maybe we’ll have to call in the Ombudsman-
EU Ombudsman says Commission guilty of maladministration in opening up climate laws
(I still say we should sack the lot of them and ask AI for definitive answers)
This war on bovines is animal abuse and profoundly ignorant. Grass (or any other feed) produces more methane if it rots on the ground than if it goes through an animal. An animal also uses it to produce meat, milk and energy.
Fruit Loops with soy milk is safe and effective.
But don’t use almond milk.
There seems to be very little science in climate science.
And when a gas absorbs energy, and its temperature rises above its environment, it promptly cools – like any other matter. It’s called thermodynamics.
During the night, the atmosphere cools, as does the surface – no sunlight, you see. This mad belief that adding methane, or CO2, or water, to air makes thermometers hotter appears to result in bovine sickness or death, and its economic consequences. Farmer suicides, perhaps?
All due to collective madness by a group of ignorant and gullible “climate scientists”.
Ain’t life grand!
The Upper Crust has obviously decided that beef and dairy products are inappropriate for the peasants! Taking the hefty profits they have realized from the sale of Ruinable Energy to the public, brokered by their political cronies, they can now afford Wagyu beef (preferably peasant massaged) for their luxury holidays and retreats. The remainder can be chopped up to feed their little dogs!
As modern humans moved from a predominantly carnivore diet to more grains and cereals, we have grown smaller in stature and brain size! The growing body of research on the benefits of a low carb, ketogenic (or carnivore) diet for the treatment of degenerative diseases and mental health make it imperative that meat consumption by the masses must be curtailed; how better to keep them docile and obsequious than by limiting their access to the essential amino and fatty acids found in beef!?
Story Tip: The nascent dictatorship evolves.
Justice Secretary David Lammy is proposing to massively restrict the ancient right to a jury trial by only guaranteeing it for defendants facing rape, murder, manslaughter or other cases passing a public interest test.
An internal government briefing, produced by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for all other Whitehall departments, confirms plans to create a new tier of jury-less courts in England and Wales. – BBC
You can see where they’re going.
We already have juryless courts. They’re called magistrate courts. This merely adds more juryless courts because the system just can’t deal with the increase in minor offences that keep occurring and those who plead not guilty (which requires a Crown Court). Quite possibly too many people posting rude tweets are pleading not guilty …..
12 Years ago: Methane: The Irrelevant Greenhouse Gas
The Climate Alarmists should leave those cows alone.
This is animal abuse.
I hope all folks on here have a happy Thanksgiving and may you blessed with many of Gods manifolds blessings.
Thank you, and my wife and I hope that you and yours had a great day. My day was heartened by the Cowboys victory over the Chiefs. And we did not eat any red meat.
“The alarmist narrative is driven by a misunderstanding of the carbon cycle.”
It’s not a misunderstanding. It’s propaganda in furtherance of their stated goal of de-industrializing the West. The misunderstanding is on the part of the article author.
“Cows eat grass and methane released from cow belches and rotting manure”
Commas are a thing, you know.
It never passed the smell test, pardon the pun. The idea that some gee-whiz food additive could reduce methane meant that methane was being converted to something else, and nature’s hundreds of millions (thousands? good grief!) of evolution had already decided that keeping that methane inside the body was not a good idea. Every explanation of Bovaer I read glossed over what that methane was being converted to. It smelled like just another green fraud, frankly worse than bovine excrement.
Cows and vegans could be fitted with fart collection systems. This methane could be used as fuel in solar powered steel mills to replace coal.
A new green industrial fuel source!
/s
But I’ve read that it’s the burps, not the farts, that release the most methane.
Even better – collecting burps would muzzle the vegans, since the collection apparatus would have to cover their faces, and we wouldn’t have to listen to their incessant stupidities about how THEY THINK humans should eat.
It is not a ‘mistaken belief’. It is a well thought out stratagem to impose vegetarianism and veganism on an unreceptive population.
Here’s an interesting response from Google’s AI:
I asked:
___________________________________________________________________________
Given this Dr. James Hansen quote in the IPCC AR4 Chapter 8:
“In the idealised situation that the climate response to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 consisted of a uniform temperature change only, with no feedbacks operating (but allowing for the enhanced radiative cooling resulting from the temperature increase), the global warming from GCMs would be around 1.2°C” (Hansen et al., 1984; Bony et al., 2006)
What would be a similar response to a doubling of atmospheric CH4?
Google AI says:
The no-feedback temperature response to a doubling of atmospheric methane CH4 would be a fraction of the 1.2°C warming caused by a doubling of CO2, likely in the range of 0.06 to 0.1°C.
____________________________________________________________________________
Wow I didn’t get the usual methane is so many times more powerful than CO2 crap (-:
And it’s less than what I expected.
Maybe after a week or so, I’ll ask the same question & see how much it changes.

This has got to be a joke. Right. Right?
“outbreak of bovine stupidity”
I just scanned the comments and, it seems no one noticed what you did there. 😎
Oh, we noticed. But it was so obvious as to not need mentioning!
It is NOT complicated.
Pasture land is not suitable for other uses. The methane release is not a climate hazard. Cows are wonderful creatures, better than horses in their digestion of poor forage. The vegans can veg out all they want, but leave cows alone. The cow is used from horn to hoof; hide, milk, and the protein they supply is the best on the planet.Viva la Vaca.
More unscientific stupidity brought to the world by vegetarians who insist biochemistry can be ignored.
Seeing how the weird critters were openly screaming «Kill the cows! Eat bugs!» for a while, how is this surprising?
