The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) and the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) welcome the opportunity to respond to the Digital Industry Group Inc (DIGI)’s first annual review of the Australian Code of Practice on Disinformation and Misinformation (ACPDM). The Academies look forward to working with social media platforms to address the challenge of misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms. In order to strengthen the Code’s capacity to guard against disinformation, the Academies put forward the following recommendations to DIGI:
Recommendation 1: Clearly define issues-based advertising and consider it within the scope of the Code.
Recommendation 2: Include misinformation from professional news content within the scope of the Code.Recommendation 3: Platforms should consider mechanisms for proactive promotion of trusted information to inoculate against misinformation.
Recommendation 4: Expand the definition of “harm” in the Code to include cumulative harms and take stronger action against disinformation accordingly.Recommendation 5: Apply an opt-out approach to the optional commitments under the Code.

Anti-scientific content abounds online, with climate science being an area of particular concern.

Climate denialism is just one example of how misinformation results in societal harm. Disinformation on health matters (such as false and misleading vaccination, sexual and reproductive health information), or ecological and environmental matters (such as material misrepresenting studies of coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef) are a barrier to good policy and a healthy society. Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic there were clear links between climate denialism and anti-vaccine movements (Hamilton, Hartter & Saito, 2015). The Code must therefore consider broader instances of misinformation and disinformation, including in issues-based advertising in all areas, especially climate change.

The updated Code must be strengthened to reduce the potential for misinformation to propagate and cause societal harm. In particular, the inclusion of issues-based advertising and professional news should be resolved to limit those as avenues of misinformation. However, DIGI’s discussion paper recommends excluding issues-based advertising from the Code (DIGI, 2022). Problematically, such advertising can be a revenue source for platforms, disincentivising its inclusion in the Code.

Recommendation 1: Clearly define issues-based advertising and consider it within the scope of the Code.
The Code currently excludes professional news content that is published under a publicly available editorial code, except where a platform determines that specific instances fall within the scope of disinformation. However, some Australian news outlets are havens for climate science misinformation (Lowe, 2018) – so this exclusion undermines the ability of the Code to guard against such denialism.
This exclusion allows climate science denialism and other misinformation to flourish, either through lack of enforcement of the disinformation provision of the Code or failure of news outlets’ misinformation to meet the higher bar of being considered disinformation. For example, a UK report recently found that Sky News Australia and its media personalities are a key source of climate science misinformation globally, including during the late 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) (King, Janulewicz & Arcostanzo, 2022). Clearly, the Code was not sufficient to address the traction of climate misinformation from Sky News Australia during this time.

Appropriate oversight of social media as publishers
The Academies consider that platforms should be held accountable and liable for content spread on their platforms, and that regulation on this should be comparable to that of traditional media. This position is suggested by the 2019 Australian court ruling that news outlets are liable for defamatory comments made on their posts by Facebook users.

In my opinion this is no less than a charter for halting the advance of science.
I’m not disputing that a lot of online content is nonsense, but some of the most stunning breakthroughs of the last century have been made by people mainstream scientists initially dismissed as crackpots.
Breakthroughs like Einstein’s theories of Relativity, Barry Marshall, who when all else failed proved peptic ulcers are caused by bacteria by deliberately infecting himself, or Alfred Wegener, who struggled to convince scientists of his theory of continental drift. And looking further back, everyone knows the story of Galileo, and his struggle with official censorship.
Imagine if the Aussie government had given a body like the AAS a gatekeeper charter 50 years ago, the power to decide who can be heard. Scientists like Barry Marshall, whose medical insight saved millions of people from untold suffering, might still be languishing in obscurity. Criminal sanctions could have applied to anyone who attempted to publish his work.
In any case, the AAS is in no position to claim the mantle of gatekeeper. Their inclusion of criticism of Great Barrier Reef science in their censorship proposal is particularly outrageous.
Remember how a few years ago, we were told the Great Barrier Reef was doomed?
Imagine not being able to criticise the alarmist statements of AAS affiliated scientists, like water quality expert Jon Brodie, who told the Guardian in 2017 that the reef was “terminal”. Or ARC Centre for Coral Excellence Director Terry Hughes, who told us in 2021 that “The bleaching is caused by record-breaking temperatures driven by global warming,”. Or Coral Centre scientist James Kerry, who told us “It takes at least a decade for a full recovery of even the fastest growing corals, so mass bleaching events 12 months apart offers zero prospect of recovery for reefs that were damaged in 2016,”.
Scientists like Peter Ridd might be censored, he could be prevented from publishing evidence the Great Barrier Reef is doing fine.
Last year the Great Barrier Reef bounced back, with record coral cover. Claims over the years that coral bleaching is anything other than a natural part of the coral cycle have now been thoroughly debunked.
And of course, the shutdown of Sky News, explicitly mentioned in the AAS proposal, the shutdown of skeptic voices like Andrew Bolt and Rita Panahi, Rowan Dean and other top rated media personalities who expose the flaws in establishment narratives, would rob Australians of an important source alternative viewpoints to the alarmism pushed by the likes of AAS affiliated scientists.
There is some good news on the censorship front. Facebook at least might be losing their taste for censorship, they have suffered a series of humiliating public censorship embarrassments.
Facebook recanted their censorship of the Covid lab leak theory in 2021, after Fauci changed his mind about whether the lab leak hypothesis was tenable. Facebook’s latest admission, that Facebook censored the Hunter Biden laptop story before the 2020 election, because the FBI told them to expect Russian disinformation, has really opened people’s eyes to how close we all are to losing the freedoms we take for granted.
To his credit, Mark Zuckerberg could have held onto his information about the FBI until after the Midterms. But there is still a long road to travel, if Zuckerberg wants to fully repair his reputation.
In my opinion this self serving AAS demand for scientific censorship is just another establishment effort to squash dissent and protect establishment narratives from justified criticism, no different to what the FBI allegedly did, or Facebook censoring the lab leak theory, and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

I keep getting the unhappy impression that Australia is more firmly in the totalitarian grip than other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. I say unhappy because when I was hitchhiking around Europe in the early 1960s, young Australian travellers I met were wonderfully free-spirited, iconoclastic, disobedient and entertaining in the backdrop of a very staid Europe.

While true, it’s important, especially, in this day and age, to remember that such behavior is not limited to the religious. It appears to infect all Mankind and all that has become an ideology at various times, especially, when insanity is in ascendance, or when the controlling groups’ power is slipping.

A brief look at the rapid sequence of events that took place in Salem reveals other parallels between the two mass hysterias. The total breakdown in the rule of law in Massachusetts began early in 1692 when a few girls started behaving strangely and having fits. Rumors and accusations of witchcraft quickly followed. The movement gained traction following a dubious “confession” forced out of an enslaved woman named Tituba, who admitted to taking the girls to meet the Devil in the middle of the night. BTW, I flew by both Yugoslavia & Albania on a dark evening & they

And of course the Sydney storage should be much greater, had the PC councils and NSW government acted appropriately to raise the Waragamba dam wall a decade ago, before the woke pile on related to Aboriginal cultural sites upstream. There is such a concept as the greater good here, Sydney needs a larger water supply and better flood mitigation, one never hears of the AAS in these matters. It appears only climate science is sacred to its management, it’s time they were taken to task along with the alarmist management at CSIRO and the BoM. ‘Their science’ is definitely unsettled by global research and climate observations over the past two decades that have virtually squashed the pro AGW arguments of the IPCC and fellow alarmist collaborators in the ‘Pause’ era.
Lets stop this climate emergency in its tracks, AAS please show us the definitive evidence for any forthcoming dangerous climate, runaway global warming etc, and leave out the foolish models and associated predictions that have no real scientific value, and incidentally have been wrong for the past 40 years. Australian’s desperately need a Royal Commission on climate science to allow a proper analysis of ongoing climate issues and any required mitigation process, that we simply cannot easily adapt to without bankrupting our future.

So which is it?
You don’t need to have your own F-15s, all you need to do is deny the enemy the ability to use theirs.
It takes a lot to keep an F-15 in the air. You need fuel, spare parts, experts to install those spare parts and well trained pilots.
Eliminate any of those, and the F-15 is grounded.
Eliminate the supply of weapons, and even if it is the air, the pilot is just an observer.
Fuel: blow up pipelines or IEDs to take out fuel trucks. Of course you can also take out the truck drivers.
Mechanics: unless they live on base, they are vulnerable. Even if they do live on base they are still vulnerable, just less so.
Spare parts: You can the delivery vehicles, or you can attack the plants that make the spare parts. Or you can attack the supplies that the plants need to build the spare parts.
Pilots: Relatively invulnerable in the air. Much less so when on the ground.
Then there is the base. There are lots of people and things that are needed to keep a base running and secure.
The idea that all you need is F-15s to keep the people in line, is something that is so stupid that only a politician could come up with it.
Similar logic applies to any of the heavy weaponry used by modern armies.

I know of one important draft paper about the Barrier Reef that has been blocked from publication by peer reviewers, one retired from a national weather agency.
I reviewed some of it informally and found it careful, technically advanced and relevant.

Every field of science has differences of opinion, indeed walk down the corridor of any University department and im sure disagreements abound. The certainity they think exists just isn’t there. But of course there’s those that that live and let live with differences in academic opinion , while there’s others who make it their life’s work to crush any voices of dissent to what they have built their career on.

I stand with the AAS. Disinformation on climate, COVID-19, and the Great Barrier Reef should be censored from the broadcast news and the internet. Only views supported by rigorous evidence should be allowed. Theories about disastrous man-made climate change, the imminent demise of the GBR, and COVID-19 having natural zoonotic origins and being more dangerous than any pandemic since the 1917 Spanish Flu and that masks and vaccines prevent its spread, all of which are unsupported by the evidence (or have a dearth of supporting evidence), should be banned.

If there was misinformation then it would be easy for the academy to highlight the misinformation and publish a scientific rebuttal, explaining why Sky was wrong. The problem for the academy is that Sky News has never been found guilty of misinformation and all of their stories on the misinformation provided by climate alarmists, some of whom are members of the academy, have been proven to be correct. The record reef cover on the GBR is one example and so is the recent record rainfall, which is contradictory to claims made by Tim Flannery and the BOM back in 2006-2008 that Australia had moved to a permanent drought due to CC. Tim Flannery’s famous words “So even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and our river systems, and that’s a real worry for the people in the bush”, is replayed constantly on Sky News, especially following a heavy rain or flood event. The reality is that Sky News are publishing the truth and that’s a big problem for the academy, whose lies are exposed.
This is authoritarianism 101 and the reason the academy are pushing the Marxist cart now is because there is a green socialist/Marxist regime in government that has a majority in both houses and can now legislate draconian Marxist laws at will. You Aussies are slow off the mark again. New Zealand has been practising this approach for some time – since the Arden government paid off the media to only print (alarmism) what they wanted printed.

Jo is (was?) a loud voice in questioning the ‘consensus’ related to Global Warming(tm).
However back in early 2020 when Fauci’s Wuhan Farce was first starting, Jo went full lockdown and not so much toed the Expert Line, as attempted to write most of it.
(amusingly unlike ‘climate’ where she is a concerned outsider applying other skill sets to look in on the ‘consensus’ and call out the New Clothes, with viruses Jo actually has some pre existing skill sets)
Jo leap all over the ‘text book examples’ of how the lockdowns were isolating and destroying the virus. The problem, as I pointed out at the time, is that ‘text books’ are deliberately written to teach specific points and are hence constructed in an artificial manner to simplify anything that may lead to confusion and focus on the topic under discussion. What works in the text book rarely transfers over completely into the real world. Probably part of the reason a lot of learning focuses on case studies of real world situations rather than lab concepts.
Jo also embraced the idea that what we needed was ventilators and masks and NOW. She unironically said that converting the entire Australian manufacturing industry over to making same was a ‘no brainer’ and doubled down for weeks by having that recommendation in the footer of her update posts.
Since I do work in Engineering (senior design draftsman) I made the counter comment that manufacturing simply didn’t work that way and switching to making completely new items in the time frames Jo was suggesting as literally impossible. Actually literally impossible in the time frames she wasn’t suggesting too.
Jo was also taking a mild bit of push back on lockdowns from people who actually needed to interact with other members of the public to put bread on the table. Continuing to work from home for months on end was fine if you were a blogger who worked from home anyway. Her claims that lockdowns were a mild inconvenience didn’t really sit well with a lot of small business owners. Just saying.
Jo then make the significant error of openly arguing with her comments section. She deliberately misquoted me during one ‘discussion’ revolving around the fact that society could not afford to hide under their beds for ever to strongly imply I was deliberately making slurs about the health profession (and in hindsight I sort of wished I had been) and I decided my life was too short to argue with fanatics.
So, I do find it mildly ironic that such a hard core ‘Trust the Science’ Covid person finds offense at someone else attempting to shut down rational debate.
Also, hope she is well and her and David are still living the Western Australian dream.

Jo’s experience in WA was different to most of us, for her the lockdown worked – WA maintained a near Covid free bubble, thanks to its isolation, until the highly contagious Omicron strain finally broke their efforts at containment.
I’ve had Covid once, it was nasty, but I’m still here. I spoke to Jo after I recovered, and described my experience in detail.

Given fear on a personal level, all the unknowns about the Wuhan
flu, & its eventual politicization, even Sherlock Holmes would’ve
made a few missteps along the way before he got a good handle on
the situation. Anyone claiming otherwise is not being that honest.
It was bad enough that data was scarce but having both it &
“authorities” being untrustworthy- like climate cabalists- made
clear, rational thinking even that much harder. For example, it
took an overly long time for the possibility of mutating even to be
mentioned. For me, that was a “Doh, how did I miss something that
obvious” moment as Hong Kong flu mutates annually! Because of
that, I hung on to the misguided notion that the vaccine would solve
the problem. Luckily, I got the Wuhan flu first (not as bad as you)
& by then, realized natural immunity was probably even better than
a shot. I haven’t ever gotten one & am not planning to do so.
Hopefully, that’s the right decision. If I do get it again, there
are numerous treatment options available.
At the end of the day, the skepticism needed to gather evidence
about climate change helped keep me, as well as many deniers,
from getting too far off track for too long. It was & still is
one big mine field.

The only thing lockdowns did was delay the inevitable.
But that delay in the case of West Australia probably saved lives – delay gave doctors more experience with treating Covid, so those learnings could be applied when the inevitable finally struck.
You can say that now, after the fact.
You didn’t know one way or the other when the Wuhan virus first showed up. It could have been 10 percent lethal for all anyone knew at the beginning. If it were 10 percent lethal, you would have welcomed a lockdown and would be saying what a good idea that is.
Delaying the inevitable also meant hospitals and health care workers weren’t over whelmed.
The earliest evidence that I remember that something was wrong was pictures of patients on gurneys in Chinese hospitals because all the beds were full.

COVID-19 stands out as one of the most incompetent acts of the UN’s WHO and politicians generally who failed to adhere to time honoured public health guidance. They are the ones who need to held to account. The same is true of the UN’s IPCC who have allowed climate science to become such a train wreck destroying economies all over the place just as lockdowns did. I know few people who bother with social media. I took a couple of weeks looking at the main ones when they were past their initial growth spurt and have not come back.
However, they have their followers and I cannot affect that. The most I can do is to publicise a counter view to that expressed in more regular channels by social media enthusiasts, keeping in mind an IQ type factor that allows for them being a bit simple for getting hooked.

I’d have hoped if WUWT would be a site where that particular tool of the cultural Marxists was recognised for what it was. The Galileo myth is the go-to for the Left wing propaganda that Christianity is anti-science, that it stood in opposition to science and impeded it – and still does – as part of the attack on the foundations of our society.
After all, science is undeniably a good thing, and rational people wouldn’t want to live in a society without the last five hundred years of scientific progress. Thus it discredits Christianity, it must be bad, if it opposes science.
Of course it’s nonsense, Christianity isn’t opposed to science and it’s not a coincidence that Christian Europe is where science emerged. Just a few years after Galileo’s book was banned because of slander, Johannes Kepler published the definitive vindication of heliocentrism. Kepler proved that celestial objects travel in elliptical orbits, whereas Galileo’s book had tried vainly to make his observations adhere to his preconceived belief that planets would have perfectly circular orbits.
Kepler was a devout Christian who believed that scientific discovery was possible because God created a rational universe that he wanted mankind to learn to comprehend. What’s more, the Christian monarchs of Europe went into bidding wars trying to bring Kepler too their court – being a patron of the sciences was very much the in thing.
It’s an old left wing myth that’s been in most textbooks for 150 years so give the average conservative a break. It’s considered cultural received wisdom even if it’s incorrect.

And yet the typical classroom, whether tertiary or secondary or even primary, will teach that science is a creation of the Age of Enlightenment. I have no trouble agreeing that it predates Christianity, whereas I think going from the “Age of Enlightenment” is obviously absurd, but that is what the vast majority are taught today, and to question that is to make oneself anathema.

The ATSE and AAS obviously overlooked (almost certainly, intentionally) the necessary Recommendation 0:
Determine what person or committee will be selected to be the judge(s) of what is to be established as “information” versus “misinformation”, and set forth the qualifications for the person or persons to serve in that capacity. Set forth the evidence that is to be evaluated, objectively if possible, for said decision making process.
If they bothered to try to enact Recommendation 0, the other recommendations would never come up for consideration.

The opposition movements have been largely dissipated by Media blackout and very effective police control. Random, well publicised brutal attacks by police on non threatening demonstrators, early morning arrest of publicist of demonstrations, and jail time for the ‘offense’ Radiation Control Weapons that cause sunburn type injury and dreadful nausea from loudspeaker type stands.

Censorship never works. All censorship does is create distrust of the authoritarian censors while simultaneously driving the contrarian views under ground.
During my decades of science, I was privileged to meet several eminent scientists who had become known as global leaders in their fields, not quite household names like Einstein, but among the best alive.
A characteristic that all of them shared was a continuing effort to challenge the conventional wisdom about their special field of interest. Some went a step further, becoming prominent by authoring the new hypothesis.
The people at the AAS who are pushing this censorship are not particularly prominent in science. Some are known more by the topic, climate change, than by their scientific excellence in analyzing it.
Here is an example of an AAS publication on climate change, to see if readers here think likewise. Title, “The Risks to Australia of a 3 degrees C Warmer World.
This is not a regular paper. It does not appear in the usual way in a Google Scholar search. It does not seem to have a list of authors, but instead has comments like “Academy Fellow Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg was team leader. It does not seem to have had customary peer review.
I asked for the Academy to retract their essay but received not even the courtesy of a reply.

My theory is half the population are women and mostly they run on emotion so they’re easy prey for emotional abuse by certain types of blokes. Toss in the alphabet soup type and rational blokes and women are a minority and that’s the missus coming so I’m outta here.
