Vital ocean upwelling fails to emerge for the first time on record

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

We’re all going to die – Part 98

From the Mail:

The failure of a vital ocean upwelling has sparked concerns of catastrophic effects for life, according to scientists.

Every year, between December and April, northerly winds create a rising current in the deep waters of the Gulf of Panama.

This upwelling brings cold, nutrient-rich waters to the surface, protecting vulnerable coral reefs and triggering an explosion of ocean life.

However, researchers now say the Panama Pacific upwelling has failed for the first time in over 40 years of records – and it could be a permanent change.

The researchers warn that the collapse of this critical yearly pattern could have ‘potentially massive’ consequences – and climate could be to blame.

Full story here.

You might have thought climate scientists would understand the difference between CLIMATE and WEATHER!

Just because this is the first time this has happened in 40 years does not mean it has not happened may times in the past.

And tucked away in the article is an admission that “scientists studying the upwelling aren’t yet sure whether this is a one-off event caused by this year’s La Niña conditions, or a more permanent change that could have disastrous ecological and economic consequences”.

The area in question is tiny, a micro-climate where all sorts of complex meteorological factors can shift the winds. Nobody understands the full complexities involved.

But it is easier to blame climate change and get paid some more grant money.

They always use weasel words like could, might, etc. Most of the time, their conclusion is that much more study is needed. This is academia speak for “send money”.

Money to be spent cruising around the Caribbean and Gulf of Panama, making the occasional measurement.

Tough life, especially if you can con someone else into paying for it..! 😉

Should I assume the boat used for measuring would be an EV?

Yes, and why does cold water ‘protect corals’, when corals thrive best in very warm water?

40 years of records

Well, that’s it, then; game over…
But seriously, they have no idea of whether this has happened before and if so, is it cyclic?

The more uncertain they are the more they throw around the coulds, mights etc etc.

Yeah, and it “could” be a permanent change, they say.

Alarmist Climate Science consists solely of speculation, assumptions and unsubstantiated assertions, and this upwelling speculation is just more of the same.

… and all to promote a sense of fear and alarm… That’s the real purpose.

The oceans are fluid, they are on a rotating planet, hence the behaviour like weather will be chaotic.

Only 40 years? What happened to the last million or even billion? Did the the dog eat them again?
You stupid twits.

For the first time ….. and it could be permanent …. How does that work?

Rule of thumb: when scientists talk about ‘could be catastrophic’,
they actually mean: “we haven’t a clue”.

Of course. It could be beneficial too. Since they have no idea because there are no records to show one way or the other, its all soothsaying at best.

From the article: “The upwelling brings cold nutrient-rich waters to the surface, protecting vulnerable coral reefs”

I see what you did there.

Yes, it’s real important that the “vulnerable” coral reefs be protected from the boiling oceans.

We need more upwelling!

Now all these years I thought coral reefs liked warm water, not cold water. So it makes me wonder why the Arctic is not full of coral reefs.

Did something similar happen during the Minoan, Egyptian, Roman or Medieval warm periods?
What about the Holocene Optimum? All of which were warmer than the present warm period.

“…according to scientists…”

The phrase that should negate all that was said before.

“Scientists say…” is the trigger to stop reading.

“Our most vulnerable…” is the trigger to sound the BS alarm.

All that is missing is “hundreds of thousands of good paying union green jobs.”

What’s worse is that the “scientists” probably didn’t even say what they say they said. There’s probaly a lot of paraphrasing, extrapolation, rationalizing, etc, ad nauseum.

You left out snipping.

Take something out of context by using only part of it changes the context. The words spoken/written are facts. The presentation out of context is not factual.

Must be an artefact of global warming. Everything else weather-related seems to be, if you believe what ‘scientists say’ 😀

My upwellings have been absent for years.

The article says you can “normally” see the algae bloom from space. So explain to me why this is a such a good thing again…

I’m not up to date and only have a little experience with shallower shelf upwelling. Nevertheless, is it more erratic due to depth and topography? Their data base which is still rare for such in much of the ocean seems inadequate. What percentage of their fisheries acquired nutrients are due to this upwelling? No doubt that upwelling can bring exceptional amounts of nutrients because the rule in the ocean is that everything tries to sink. According to their conclusion, the fishery collapse and coral bleaching should show up soon and pitiful. PNAS seems to rely on the negatives.

September 15, 2025 4:58 pm

But the changes could also be part of a more permanent shift in global weather patterns caused by climate change.

Weather causes climate by definition and not the other way around. Using the correct definition, The above sentence can be rewritten correctly as:

“The changes could also be part of a more permanent shift in global weather patterns caused by shifting global weather patterns.”

Of course, that sounds silly because it is. Why “scientists” fail to use the correct definitions of weather and climate when issuing warnings is beyond me.

How, exactly, do winds affect deep ocean currents?

September 16, 2025 9:23 am

The oceans have a fixed volume so somewhere else it must be upwelling, just not off Panama where many ships have measured it daily since the canal was built…

I have just been sent a message by a friend who is on a boat in the Galapagos Islands and three weeks ago he said the water temperature was around 14 – 15C, too cold for swimming. So to say there has been no cold upwelling this year is just plain wrong.

The upwelling phenomenon was to happen in the December – April timeframe.

Long before there was a Panama, or a South American continent, there was life on Earth.
