Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has implied that the West owes a “historical debt” to countries in the Global South to drastically reduce carbon emissions due to the legacy of colonialism.
Speaking at a Fridays for Future youth protest in Glasgow, Scotland, on the fringes of the United Nations COP26 climate conference, 18-year-old Thunberg said: “The climate and ecological crisis, of course, does not exist in a vacuum. It is directly tied to other crises and injustices that date back to colonialism and beyond.
“Crises based on the idea that some people are worth more than others and therefore have the right to exploit others and steal their land and resources.”
The teen climate activist continued by implying that the climate crisis cannot be solved without confronting these “injustices”, saying: “It is very naive of us to think that we can solve this crisis without addressing the root cause of it.”
She then alluded to the West, using the increasingly popular term ‘Global North’ to describe the developed world — compared to the ‘Global South’, which is also being used more frequently in recent years to discuss climate change and ‘decolonising’ the alleged crisis — having a “historical debt” to the countries it colonised, which she says are on the “front line” of the “climate crisis”.

I read an Indian nationalist asserting that the UK took coal from India back to the UK. Of course they did, after all, what better economics is there than to dig coal out of the ground halfway round the planet and transport it back to a country where abundant coal can be dug out of the ground right next to where it’s needed.
It’s worth noting that where-ever there is complaining about colonialism you will find The Morning Star, China Daily and usually Russian military hardware including the AK47. I wonder what the people of Tibet, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, the Baltic states, Romania, Bulgaria (for example) think of colonialism?

Isn’t the United States a collection of former colonies of Europe? Does that imply we “owe it to ourselves” rather than to every other nation on earth… hmmm?

The manta is that it has to be “somebody” ELSE owes “us”, today for what “we” never worked for today!
“We owe it to ourselves” is too close to being “We are responsible for ourselves” for the reparations grifters comfort.

Perhaps Greta can pay some of her millions to the descendent of slaves at Saint Barthelemy, which Sweden used to own. Their colonies first parson was a certain Sven Thunberg. Any relation?
This whole “reparations” reminds me of AIM (American Indian Movement).
They demanded that the entire US be returned to them.
I asked once, “Which tribe gets Georgia? The Shawnee lived in Georgia until they were driven out by the Cherokee. Some other tribe drove the Cherokee into Tennessee. The Shawnee ended up in Ohio. Pennecook New Hampshire was named after a tribe that was wiped out by another tribe. Which tribe gets Pennecook?”
(That’s not an exact quote. I said it 20 or so years ago but it is the gist.)
I never got a real answer. The AIM supporters refused to admit that they were as divided as any other “race” on the face of the Earth.
Bottom line, you can dwell on how someone has told you that your ancestors’ (sometimes ancient) past is responsible for your present and all those long dead people “owe you”; or you can build your own future despite your present.
