“I would like to ask your opinion, I think during the ‘season of repair,’ we should have a mandatory national service, one year, for people between 18 and 26 because we need you,” Williamson said. “We need to fix this climate. We need to fix this country.”

I suspect this policy idea will wreck whatever is left of Marianne’s chances.
When kids protest about climate change, their protests usually include a demand that someone else does the hard work. It seems unlikely climate believers will support a plan which involves them getting off their own butts.

Sounds good, let the teachers and parents put their money into what they tell their kids to say.
What exactly would they do for a year? No one is actually doing anything to combat this supposed crisis. I suppose you could make them build wind farms or solar farms in some kind of forced labour program. I guess you could drive down the cost of EVs if you forced kids to work in a car plant for a year. Not sure if mom and dad would appreciate that. This whole crisis dogma is surreal.
Some could be hired out to sugar daddies and mommies to pay down the debt.
You don’t drive down the cost of EVs that promotes personal auto ownership and usage, one of the precepts of Capitalism and western democracies. You have to, necessarily, inflate the cost of ICE cars until they cost twice what the EV costs making them unaffordable for most people. An average EV price of $100,000 and the subsequent $200,000 ICE cost will ensure that every garage is empty and the 2 car nuclear family is a thing of the past.
I thought I had heard about a similar forced-induction plan enacted previously . . . so I tracked it down.

Besides the noxious idea of conscription for all 18-26 year olds, I did not see any mention of this proposed program’s cost to US taxpayers, nor on exactly what all this young labor would be doing to “fix” the non-existent climate “problem”. Maybe they will just start by spying on their parents and neighbors and compiling dossiers on all those using ICE vehicles instead of EVs, as well as those daring to BBQ with charcoal briquettes.
That NONE of the other Democrat Party candidates at this forum immediately attacked this proposal for conscription speaks volumes about those candidates’ ethics and integrity that voters are now facing, and will be up to November 2020.
Don’t mock it. Promote it!
Bring it to the attention of everyone you talk to. And while they are absorbing it, and before they can comment back, make the following observation:
“Ya know, if we were to actually implement the Green New Deal, this is just the kind of thing we’d actually have to do.”
While they’re absorbing THAT, follow up with:
“Of course, if you read all the stuff in the Green New Deal, that would only be a tiny start…”
Endorse it. Use it. Leverage it.

How about mandatory training in basic science like the scientific method. Unfortunately, I don’t think a science education is compatible with Marianne Williamson’s world view which seems to be shaped by mystic crystals, unicorns farting rainbows and tin foil hats.

So, the GretaYouth need to start about age 12. After all, they are the future. After age 18 it has been regularly shown… (well… claimed, which for a leftie is the same as proof), that they are no longer concerned about youth issues because they become selfish adults who no longer care about the planet they are leaving for the next generation.
So all under 18s need to be made to join the GretaYouth where they will get nice little uniforms of practical shirts and shorts and braids in their hair where they can march around singing Tomorrow Belongs To Me outside beerhalls.
What could possibly go wrong?
The other thing that needs to be done is levy youth to raise money for the government. After all, as they constantly point out, THEY are the future so it is only logical that THEY become invested in it by literally investing in it. I suggest 50% of their wages after tax for everyone under the age of 18.

I think its a great idea. The panic in the eyes of the “activists” would be fantastic. Imagine being told that if this is really the “emergency” that you say it is you have to do real work for a solid year of your life, not just march around on sunny days and use a few hashtags.
I’d be for it if it were about the wunderkind going about picking up garbage etc, but it wont be about that. It will be like Cambodia and the Killing Fields where the Nuevo Nazi Youth Wanna-bes go around finding businesses and individuals to report to the authorities.
There already have been calls from the loony left in the US to have the teachers instruct your children to inform on you if you say something against the narrative, the idea being you will be reeducated. I believe this idea originated during one of Obamas trips to visit Stasi Mommy Merkel. They are also talking about the Chinese like social credit system where people like you will be on the streets in rags or soylent greened.
The only true justice for Merkel would be if she were dragged though the streets and beaten to a bloody pulp in the same way Mussolini was.

Actually, mandatory “climate service” (whatever that entails) should probably be imposed on the 50+ climate contrarian crowd, as so many youth are merely trying to just make ends meet in this “climate emergency” economy.
“Climate service” sounds to me like another way to soften those who might not subscribe to the meme..
Yay! Lets reinstitute slavery so young adults can spend part of their most productive years either yelling at the sun or stuffing carbon dioxide molecules into hefty bags for burial in a landfill instead of being you know productive.
Socialists base their public expression of virtue on how well they claim to care for the welfare of the poor and those less well off. But they fully intend to fund their public generosity by seizing money and assets from private citizens. Now one of the socialist candidates for president wants to seize the time of young people as well.
This candidate is showing far more greed than any unrestrained “robber baron” capitalist ever did.
Service in hospitals, rehab places, elder care, and related things might be a good way to go.
Insofar as there is no climate crisis, whatever she is promoting is a waste.

Sounds like a great idea. A year without any of the modern inventions that make life easier and more comfortable. No man made fibres, back to hodden grey: no mechanical transportation walk everywhere wearing rawhide sandals: no electricity heating using chicken dung lighting by beeswax candles: untreated water: homegrown food eggs and bacon*: no modern insulation etc etc. The few that survive winter will never be the same again.
*The Englsh breakfast – the chicken is involved but the pig is committed.
What are these folks going to DO to save the climate. Square bashing will have zero effect, after all.
1. Will 4 million young folks each plant 1000 trees so that 4 billion new trees are plsnted annually?
Q: Who will create 1 billion young trees for those young folks to plant? That is quite a few nurseries going full tilt.
2. Will 4 million young folks provide free labour on organic farms?
Q: who will be supervising them and where will they be billeted?
3. Will 4 million young folks be remodelling urban areas to capture runoff rainfall to return to groundwater?
Q: How many lawsuits will result from young folks unused to hard labour putting their backs out of joint?
As national service will not change the weather (the military already has secret programs doing that), the only good it can do is to alter the capability to be resilient to that weather.
Begs the question why you cannot pay adults to do the job anyway?
Get an army of slaves instead! America was founded on slavery after all…

We hear of surveys about climate change beliefs but are there any data with age info so that we can know what percentage of 18 to 26 year olds actually belief the nonsense? If I were a politician proposing such a howler I would at least attempt to know that figure.

Why that particular age range? Why any age range? Why not just conscript everyone for the duration of their miserable CO2–emitting lives?

Climate conscription necessitates a system of waivers. You KNOW who will be able to get one.

The utterly absurd thing about this proposal is that there is nothing these conscripts could do that would have any effect on the total of global emissions.
Everyone in the US seems to think the US is 75% or so of the global economy and must be emitting huge proportions of the worlds CO2 emissions. This may have been true 50 years ago, but it is not any more. The US is only doing about 12% of the world’s emissions. And the total is falling, and the percentage US emissions represent is falling even faster.
China, India and the developing world are doing 75% now. And its rising. And they have no intention of reducing, on the contrary they are actively planning to increase their emissions.
So unless the good lady is going to send the army of conscripts off to China and India, there will be absolutely nothing that they can do where they are now which will have any material effect on global emissions, and therefore (according to the theory) there is nothing they can do which will have any material effect on global temperatures.
If there is a problem, we in the West are a minor part of it. You could abolish all US emissions and it would have negligible effect on the global total.
Not to mention there is nothing that an army of conscripts could do to even lower US emissions. What are they supposed to do exactly? Start peddling stationary bikes to generate electricity? Operate rickshaws to reduce car use? Maybe block a few California freeways in relays?
What happened to the US education system in the last 30 years? It seems to have reinvented itself with the aim of turning out graduates who have no idea how to think logically.
