A diesel-powered generator is being used to run the music stage at the Extinction Rebellion protests on Deansgate.
Organisers told the Manchester Evening News they felt “like hypocrites” but had been “forced” to use the generator because it would have been too expensive to get a solar panel made.
The protest – which has brought one of Manchester’s busiest shopping streets to a standstill to highlight the threat of climate change – is on its third day.
Graham Buss, 63, said: “We were desperate to get a solar panel specially made for the demonstrations but it would have cost us £8,000.
“That’s money we simply don’t have.
“Even if we’d been able to get a solar panel made, we would have still had to have had a diesel-powered generator as a back up.
“It’s something we really do regret having to use and we feel like hypocrites, but this is the point.
“We’re part of a system that has made it incredibly difficult to use solar panels for these sorts of events and we feel like we’ve been forced to have to use the diesel generator.

It also looks mighty cloudy and cool there as well with rapidly decreasing solar insolation on a daily basis happening now in the northern hemisphere. No sure a solar how big of a solar panel they would have needed to power their pathetic protest with pseudo scientific gobbly guk.
“That’s money we simply don’t have.”
But the rest of you do, so pay up!
How I would love to see these cretins forced to actually walk the line they demand everyone else must! If they were forced to practice what they preach we would be better off because there would be far fewer of them.
The irony is so rich and thick, you’d have to spread it with a diesel powered bucket loader…
+42 🙂
Diesel power…one of my favourite tracks…
Incredible, first their leader “prayed” after taking psychedelic drugs, and now they need diesel Lol… they could have found a petrol generator and saved people the nasty stink of diesel…. We need to ask them how they get to work? Or how do they get to the shops etc etc.. Are their houses all run on solar, do they have gas boilers? And last but not least, are they all vegan? As we know the animals fart are killing the planet more then all the exhaust fumes combined (cow conspiracy website – facts section)….
“We’re part of a system that has made it incredibly difficult to use solar panels for these sorts of events and we feel like we’ve been forced to have to use the diesel generator.”
Yeah… a system that may contain darkness after sunset. Posing a very unique problem for these sorts of events.
“We were desperate to get a solar panel specially made for the demonstrations but it would have cost us £8,000.
“That’s money we simply don’t have.”
For these folks pushing an agenda that will make my energy less reliable and costs higher, I, an older retiree on a fixed income, have one thing to say — That’s money I simply don’t have.
These people can’t see that solar is expensive and needs backup.
The irony-impairment and lack of self-awareness burns!
This is precisely the point. If you want to go green, you have to give up the luxury of fossil fuel, among many other things.
Deansgate has no EXTENSION CORDS ???????
Or, if you need music, ever heard of acoustic instruments ?????????
Sounds like they have no friends on that street from which to obtain electricity.
“Spaceship Superstar” You can have a Solar powered laser beam guitar.
Well, apparently, they didn’t spend the money Soros gave them wisely. The “others will pay our way” theme will be good for only so long. 😛
Why were they able to block a street for three days ?
So we have four examples in a week. Obama buys oceanfront. Diesel powered eco-activism. 4000 fly to Salt Lake City. And of course virtue signal Greta and her jet travel enabled sailing crossing. Clearly WUWT needs to hold a contest and give out annual awards. Here are our four front runners.
Not to mention the ‘evil fossil fueled ‘ tug that was needed to get her boat into and out of port for those racing yachts are rubbish at going slow so either need to use their engines , which are required to have , or get a tow .
And still no news on how she is getting back !
apaert from an aussie media item on her saying her autism is a superpower and how the climate panic stunt gives her a reason to eat and talk…shes been remarkably silent
thank a deity
I vote for Obama on the beachfront since it is a lasting example of a con job while the others are notable short-term travesty events for virtue signaling.
I’m coming around to the notion that a human lifetime is one big marketing stage for millions of ad hits and experiments for fun and profit by the promoters. It’s the Matrix but with ads and messaging in the machine world of spin.
And the incredible carbon footprint of the boat, meaning that Greta’s trip cost at least 6 TCO2e. This is dominated by the upfront carbon cost of the boat, and does not include the flights.
So the solar would have cost 8,000 pounds sounds like a lot of money, especially if it’s your own money. In the United States we have Home Depot, a large home improvement store chain, that sells a 6K watt gasoline generator for $549 US or 455 pounds British. A reliable 6K watts for use day or night. I’m sure we all thank the Manchester environmental activists for so clearly demonstrating the costs and limitations of renewable energy and the devastating effects their pet cause would have on humanity.
Its noticeable they not had the type of supportive ‘free press ‘ they got in London for this event , and of course without the ability for others to see how virtuous you are there is simply no point in being so in the first place.
Want to kill these protest , switch of the Wifi in the are and do give them any press coverage .
Fells hypocritical? Of course! Because nearly all the climate alarmists are hypocrites!
A few are Hippie-critical
The bone-headed stupidity is just awesome.
Interesting sign on the side of their stage, “No-one left behind!”.. clearly, basic education left them all behind.
Felt like?
funny/stupid
Did Uncle Soros approve that statement?
Having good intentions is not enough. Your good intentions have to match up with reality — otherwise you’re in danger of doing more harm than good.
The “system” is making it incredibly difficult for them to use solar panels. They just don’t get it. They are not blaming the technology but rather the “system”. I am sure they think if the “system” was the Green New Deal, then their pathetic little booth could be powered by solar cells. You can’t fix stupid.
For once, I agree with XR! Solar IS ridiculously expensive, unreliable and impractical.
That could easily pass for a snake oil salesman stage in an earlier era or a magic act with slight of hand.
Did they also consider a wind turbine? Or are these things just not practical or affordable?
Why didn’t they just ask Al Gore, Elon Musk or any other solar panel crusader for the money? I am sure they would have gladly pitched in with their own.
