UN IPCC chief Pachauri under fire in India for conflicts of interest

From the “follow the money” department, this story has been building momentum ever since the story was made public by Christopher Booker and Dr. Richard North of the EU Referendum who three weeks ago co-wrote a major piece in the Sunday Telegraph. WUWT initially covered the story here on December 21st: Pachauri’s Carbon Choo-Choo off the rails.

The following week the Telegraph had a follow up story, and more questions than answers were raised.

Now it appears the story “has legs”, and is being covered in India by India Today, front and center on their Sunday edition.

The subheadline reads: “Climate change hero was on boards of oil and power PSU’s with large carbon footprints, got crores worth of business for TERI from them

Pachauri of course denies any conflict of interest. Details on TERI (The Energy Research Institute) here

The India Today newspaper writes:

Pachauri’s answer to this charge is: “I haven’t pocketed a penny from my association with companies and institutes,” he said.

“All honoraria I get go to TERI and to its ‘Light A Billion Lives’ campaign for reaching solar power to people without electricity. My dealings are above board.” The climate change hero is quick with his answers, but doubts over his links linger.

Now that this story has legs, we’ll see more investigative journalism coming and those “doubts over his links” will get filled in, one way or another. There are questions now arising as to the legality of some of the dealing TERI has had in Britain and the way it reports its dealings to the Charity Commission.

There’s another interesting twist to this that involves Climategate and the CRU.

Pachauri is one of the two directors of TERI. He is also a trustee, along with Sir John Houghton and Sir Crispin Tickell, (see here) formerly England’s man at the UN and the person who converted Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to a belief in global warming, which led her to allocate the money Houghton needed to set up the HadleyCentre for Climate Change.

As WUWT readers know, Hadley (along with the CRU) has played a key part in the story of climate research (and Climategate) ever since.

We have Al Gore who is viewed by many as being the most influential communicator on the climate change issue who is up to his neck in carbon trading and also has many board associations that help his cause. Now we have the leader of the UN’s IPCC with questionable business associations. Where’s NYT’s Andy Revkin? Where’s 60 Minutes? Where’s Dateline NBC?

Above: Gore and Pachauri get the Nobel Prize.

And here’s the kicker from the Telegraph’s follow up story:

Initially, when Dr Pachauri took over the running of TERI in the 1980s, his interests centred on the oil and coal industries, which may now seem odd for a man who has since become best known for his opposition to fossil fuels. He was, for instance, a director until 2003 of India Oil, the country’s largest commercial enterprise, and until this year remained as a director of the National Thermal Power Generating Corporation, its largest electricity producer.

In 2005, he set up GloriOil, a Texas firm specialising in technology which allows the last remaining reserves to be extracted from oilfields otherwise at the end of their useful life.

However, since Pachauri became a vice-chairman of the IPCC in 1997, TERI has vastly expanded its interest in every kind of renewable or sustainable technology, in many of which the various divisions of the Tata Group have also become heavily involved, such as its project to invest $1.5 billion (£930 million) in vast wind farms.

Next time somebody says “skeptic “x” is connected with big oil”, show them this.

Tiger Woods downfall was external affairs outside of his vow of matrimony. By the same token, Dr. Pachauri is “married” to the IPCC and is apparently conducting “business affairs” that appear to be a conflict of interest outside of his vow of public service. If this isn’t grounds for a divorce from the IPCC, I don’t know what would be.

Follow the money, not the temperature.

They cannot say the fossil fuel industry picked Patchy to help them be kinder to the planet. He is not an atmospheric scientist anyway. The emails clearly state Patchy was the choice of George Bush. Bush is daily noted as an evil obstacle to the CC industry and every other issue of the left. Bush cannot be blamed for everything one day and turn around and be considered a saint working behind the scenes now when it’s convenient. The emails also mention reports of lobbying for Patchy by Saudi Arabia. The Saudis were bad when Bush was in office. Did they all of a sudden become good? No.

Just surprised that it has taken this long for the light to come on.
Even a quick glance at the companies and names involved in all aspects of the great carbon swindle from NGO’s and “consultants” to “big oil” and the alarm bells should have gone off a long time ago.
The carbon swindle is set to go into the trillions and while we all know where those trillions are coming from nobody will be able to tell you where they end up. All quickly passed from one “scheme” to another in such a way that even the most determined accountant will loose track.
People often talk about a “carbon tax”. What carbon tax? Tell me the rate of carbon tax. 5%? 20%? Nobody could or would give you an actual figure. All you know for sure is that money disappears from your wallet and Gaia doesn’t have a bank account.
Hundreds of billions, possibly trillions have been stolen already and not one single ppm change in atmospheric CO2. Even if you are a committed AGW believer you must be at least starting to have doubts about carbon trading and those involved. Even a useful idiot like Moonbat must wonder at times about what he is helping create.

Anthony, great reporting. Commenters, fantastic additional info. I am looking forward to the day when the pair in the photo serve jail time together — Nobel Prize winners Gore and Paxhouri should get the same cell, shouldn’t they. That is the respect they deserve along with a life sentence for THE FRAUD OF THE CENTURY — or how many centuries back. This is pretty maximum!

At the core of climatology, from its very beginning was to try and predict furure episodes or periods of bad weather; I don’t remember ever participating in a study with the goal of anticipating the timing of a spring picnic.
Too many of us have got in the way of these peoples’ enjoyment of gloom.

Gore and Pachauri get the Nobel Prize. (picture above)
from nobelprizes.com:
“2007
The prize goes to:
INTERGOVERNMENTAL PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE (IPCC) and ALBERT ARNOLD ( AL) GORE JR. for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change. ”
====
i was always skeptical about AGW, just a natural skeptic i guess.
could the above also say “for their efforts to hype and spread fear about man-made climate change, and to lay the financial foundations for measures that are needed/profitable to counteract such/if any change.”
they both got the nobel?? it’s worse than I thought.

Let me guess.. the “technology” involves pumping CO2 into one end of the field while Oil comes out the other. Getting paid for both CO2 sequestration under some UN scheme and by the market for all those extra barrels of Oil?
Nice work if you can get it.

“Hundreds of billions, possibly trillions have been stolen already and not one single ppm change in atmospheric CO2.”
Absolutely agree. Here in Maryland, they have their own version of ‘cap and trade’ whereby they take a dollar fifty from every citizen’s pocket via his electricity bill. And to think, they forced the Baltimore Mayor to resign, because she embezzled Best Buy gift cards worth about ~600 dollars !!!
More on-topic, India Today is bang-in-the-middle mainstream media with a nationwide reach. I’m sure its going to look pretty ugly when this article turns up in the hands of Pachauri fans.

“Some of the companies Dr Pachauri could say that his aim was to help move them to less CO2 emitting technologies. But GloriOil, where he is founder and science advisor, their “mission is delivering state of the art bio-technology solutions to improve and increase recovery from mature oil wells”
-As in Co2 injection perhaps?

CO2 is 6 euro a kg. I don’t think that Pachauri wouldn’t let such a valuable industry gas go to waste.

When the historic bestseller “The Rise and Fall of the Western World” is writen in a year or two, the question will no doubt arise: Who was responsible for the fall of the West? I’d like to propose an answer: Joe Sixpack, Jane Doe, John Smith, and about three billion or more people in Europe, the South and Western Pacific, North and South America, the Far East (excluding China), South Asia (including India), and several hundred million Russians and West Asians. I doubt that Al Gore and Pachauri will even get an honorable mention or footnote. Lesson? Don’t trust politicians, “scientists”, or media types any further than you can throw them with both arms tied behind your back.

I think that this post is worth treating as a full discussion. It opens up on the real principal of AGW, Maurice Strong whom it seems, is not averse to making a “profit”, works hand in hand (bag in bag?) with “Big Energy” (Big Oil is old hat), yet is also a watermelon of the worst variety – a stereotypical “pious hypocrite”.
The world has been mann-ipulated – strong-armed into (very profitable for some) belief in mann-made GW with gory effect.

True
Chuck in the bankers with this lot too.
They are all embroiled in this tawdry affair but my concern is how can this be reversed?
We (the ordinary people) just seem to be the ‘patsies’ who get serially ripped off by the aforementioned. – Think Enron, Sub Prime, Quantative Easing – it never stops. But this one is the ‘daddy of them all’
I am loath to talk about ‘conspiracy’ because it sounds like the ravings of a demented paranoid but it seems increasingly like it to me. The greenies? The scientists at EAU CRU – well they were easily bought it seems. Both of these groups seem to be pawns in this. All they have done is provide a suitable ‘religion’ and a catechism to gather the masses for the politicians to ‘lead’.
Well if patient people are forced to wait too long, they might be constrained to take desparate action.

I agree. It is the story behind the stories.
Could be called “The mother of all those stories”.
And, again, show it to all the greenies who protest against AGW and big oil/energy and find themselves on the same side of the battlefield … uchh.
AGW is still supposed to become somebody’s new cashcow.
Hopefully too late now.

One might also ask, “Where’s Guardian’s rabid anti-capitalist and climate-change bulldog George Monbiot?”
“Moonbat hasn’t posted on climate science or anything connected since Dec. 21. The silence is deafening. I wonder if he’s decided to pull a John Moore”?
Be fair to him guys. After the release of the emails he did appear shocked to the core and “promised” in print to be a better journalist.
IF he has worked out that he has been had, (and there is no doubt of that) give him a little time to for his ego to deflate and let us welcome him to the dark side, after all, giving up on religion ain’t easy!!!

Over at the little tiny Air Vent blog, Dr. Leonard Weinstein seems to have discovered very compelling evidence that Google has eliminated over 20 million links to climategate.
http://noconsensus.wordpress.com/2010/01/10/climategate-ii-rewriting-history-google-style/

Compelling? How about some hard data? There’s no 20,000,000 climategate stories. On Nov 28 there were only 718 links even though Google then claimed there were more than 10,000,000. See

On Nov 28 I could have gathered all 718 links. All that Dr. Leonard Weinstein has found is that Google’s count is now 20,000,000 closer to reality.

Moonbat was still making the rounds promoting his book in Canada in November and December 2009, writing articles and doing interviews. He is probably just figuring out a way to get the spin back on the ball.

He did a number of interviews on CBC. I don’t know if he bought carbon credits to get over here but he admitted he broke his promise not to fly due to aircraft CO2 emissions – so where does that leave his ethical position? Apparently he came over here to Canada to make us see the error of our carbon producing ways and schill his book to make a few bucks while he was at it. Since this was at the same time as Climategate, maybe he figured “What the heck … better get people to buy my book before they find out what is going on …. and take the stipend I have been offered for the CBC interviews. ” “CBC being the Canadian equivalent of the BBC with the same leftist agenda – though I listen to it a lot as it provides a lot of decent news coverage if you ignore all the leftist adjectives and verbage. The CBC bias is so blatant that it is actually pretty easy to tune it out.

From what I have been reading it looks like big oil is sponsoring the AGW crowd. Either that or someone is pocketing my share.
