Jed from Royal Wootton Bassett Academy was one of many students from two Wiltshire schools to share his thoughts at the Sustain Britain Schools Conference 2026.
While Anna, a student at Malmesbury school said it is a “very big worry” and “quite frustrating because it just feels like not enough action is being taken”.

The conference was started by Sustain Britain after it realised last year it did not have anybody under 35 attending their usual event.
Jed added: “In the future we are the people that uphold the environment and we may have picked up some bad habits from the people that we’ve got it from”.

Malmesbury School geography teacher Sarah Blackburn explained that she would be taking some of what was said in the conference back to her lessons, which already include climate change.

Back in the real world, renewables and climate policy have done nothing to British energy security.
British Gas boss warns UK at risk of winter fuel shortage ‘with almost no gas in storage’

Thu, 27 August 2026 at 11:37 PM AESTBritain has “almost no gas in storage in the UK for the coming winter”, the boss of British Gas’s owner has said as the UK risks facing a fuel shortage this winter.
The chief executive of Centrica, Chris O’Shea, said “time is rapidly running out” as winter approaches, in what he called a “huge concern” for energy and national security.
It comes as households across Britain already face skyrocketing bills, as the impact of Donald Trump’s war on Iran continues to hit energy prices.

Thursday 10 February 2022 12:11, UKCuadrilla is to plug and abandon two shale gas wells in Lancashire following orders from the government’s industry regulator, it confirmed in a statement.
Cuadrilla’s parent company AJ Lucas said the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) had ordered it to permanently seal the two shale gas wells drilled at the Preston New Road (PNR) Lancashire shale exploration site.

Cuadrilla claims shale gas from the North of England has the potential to meet the UK’s energy needs and alleviate the cost of living crisis, as well as create jobs and aid levelling up.
Analysts and green campaigners say because gas is globally traded, meaning it is sold to the highest bidder, it is unlikely to help the UK.
Cuadrilla’s chief executive officer, Francis Egan, said he thought the decision had not “been properly thought through”.
“Leaving our own shale gas in the ground will make reducing global emissions even harder,” he said. “Emissions from importing gas are far higher than those from home-produced shale gas.”

Britain has also recently made North Sea gas extraction more difficult, to the point it is likely no longer economically viable.

Mon 15 Jun 2026 15.00 AESTBritain’s industrial sector is at risk of collapse as thousands of companies warn that they could face bankruptcy within the next year because of high energy prices, according to an industry survey.
The manufacturers’ body Make UK said the latest feedback from its members found that many would not be able to cope for much longer with energy costs that were twice the average in continental Europe and four times higher than in the US.
A survey revealed that a quarter of manufacturing companies either planned to move their production overseas or had already done so, while one in 10 companies believed it was likely or very likely they would be insolvent within the next 12 months.

A £4bn sale of 30-year debt on Tuesday was priced at a yield of 5.82 per cent, the UK Debt Management Office said, the highest interest rate on any gilt issuance since the DMO’s creation in 1998. “The success of the transaction, notwithstanding a volatile market environment, provides further demonstration of the ongoing strength and depth of the gilt market and the valuable support from its participants for our financing programme,” said Jessica Pulay, the DMO’s chief executive.

The UK’s 10-year borrowing costs, which are the more closely watched indicator, are the highest in the G7 at 5.2 per cent. The DMO has already paid its highest 10-year borrowing cost since 2008 earlier this year, after yields climbed.

But these poor kids have not been taught the real reason the British economy is in such a mess. When those kids leave school, they’ll vote for more of the same, and support politicians who want to crack down even harder. They will support more taxes on fossil fuel, and a continuation of the gas fracking moratorium. Because they’ve been taught it’s their job to complete the green revolution their parents are hesitating to progress, by educators who seem more interested in indoctrinating little climate warriors than preparing kids for life in the real world.
