Vigilante anti-ULEZ campaigners hang bat boxes on cameras to stop engineers fixing them

The £10 bat homes have been spotted attached to ULEZ devices in areas of London. Anti-ULEZ campaigners aim to make it more difficult for damaged cameras to be repaired

Anti-ULEZ campaigners are hanging bat boxes on the cameras – to stop engineers repairing them.

The £10 animal homes have been spotted attached to ULEZ devices in Chessington, Kingston upon Thames and North Cheam. ULEZ opponents say they are “positively contributing to London’s biodiversity and ecosystem”. One said: ”I’m sure whoever is behind it is extremely grateful to TfL for providing the poles to house this protected species.”

Take that, Sadiq! Bizarre moment vigilantes dressed as Batman install bat boxes in bid to stop ULEZ cameras being set up amid backlash to Mayor’s hated scheme

This is the bizarre moment two vigilantes dressed as Batman install bat boxes in a bid to stop Sadiq Khan‘s much-hated Ulez cameras being set up.

In a hilarious video posted on TikTok, two men dressed as the crime-fighting caped crusader come bounding across the road in Chessington, south London, as the superhero’s iconic theme tune from the 1960s plays.

One carrying a ladder rests it up against a lamppost before his sidekick scales up with his cape flapping behind as Batfight graphics ‘Kapow!’, ‘Pow’, ‘Zap’, and ‘Bash’ flash on the screen.

I personally think the batman vigilantes are hilarious, but we at WUWT do not encourage this kind of behaviour, especially in places like The People’s Republic of Britain. Britain is a place where defying the woke agenda with speech crimes can be punished with longer sentences than rape or stabbing someone to death. I don’t know what sentence the anti-ULEZ vigilantes will face if they are caught, but the vigilantes have massively embarrassed Mayor Sadiq Khan, so London authorities will likely want to make an example of them.

I wonder if ULEZ cameras could be fashioned into guillotines. Perhaps their poles could be used for some other purpose.

Even if they catch them, for what would the prosecute? I can’t see any actual damage to the camera, AFAICS it’s still there and in perfect condition, it’s just now functioning as a hook for the hanging of these bat boxes, so what’s the crime?

April 4, 2024 9:48 am

Whilst applauding the efforts of these freedom fighters, the mirror gets it completely wrong.

It’s illegal to disturb a bat roost including boxes, but these new boxes won’t have roosting bats, so the bat boxes will be removed pretty sharpish. Not only that but they need to be mounted at leat 3 m off the ground.

Shame, though, it was a cracking idea and brought some publicity.

Perhaps if they pre-installed a realistic looking fake bat in the box before it is put in place.

How do you check to see if the bat is real, without risking “disturbing” it?

Send in the Bat Man.

In the UK, we have ecologists who are allowed to do surveys including checking bat roosts for signs of habitation.

Neither of which has anything to do with “low emissions”.

Come on Nick, you are usually better than this. Have you not been paid this week?

Reply to  Nick Stokes
April 4, 2024 10:25 pm

No, Nick, it has nothing to do with controlling traffic, we have traffic lights for that.

In the UK, several cities charge drivers of older cars to enter the city.

The sole purpose of the low-emission zones is to stop people from driving older cars. New cars don’t pay the tax.

London for example charges £12.50 per day just to enter the city and its surrounds.

Guess who drives older cars? That’s right, the same people who can’t afford £12.50 a day to go to work.

The wealthy are ok, they drive new cars paid for by their company.

Its not to control traffic, you’re quite wrong about that. It has nothing to do with controlling traffic. Its nominal justification is to reduce emissions, but the real purpose is to raise funds for the London administration. Khan has picked a target which can be justified, or at least, argued for, on environmental grounds.

You are right, in that that the emissions being controlled do not include CO2. But Net Zero has come in to the decision making process, as you can see from this quote by a spokesperson for Khan:

“The Mayor remains committed to making London net zero by 2030. The Ulez works and is London-wide. It is an important next step in tackling the triple challenges of toxic air pollution, traffic congestion and the climate emergency and it is just one of many policies the Mayor is championing to help reach that goal.

“But the Mayor has been clear that in order for us to achieve net zero by 2030, the Government needs to step up as he only has powers to address less than half of London’s emissions.

So it is a factor.

The leftists spent much capital and effort writing stories and making movies and TV shows in the 1960s and 1970s and 1980s about how in the future it was going to be the conservatives controlling large corporations, controlling the world. They got it wrong. It’s their fellow lefties with their big businesses and mega wealthy doing everything they claimed the conservatives would do.

That said, I wonder if there’s anywhere to download all the old Flash episodes of Whirlgirl? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WhirlGirl
