At a New York event to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of the film and his subsequent climate advocacy work, Gore, now 78, joked: “I always say if it hadn’t been for me, we might have a big problem right now” when asked about the progress made over the past two decades.
“The scientists unfortunately have been proven to be absolutely correct,” Gore said on Wednesday. “In some important ways, they may have even understated what the damage is doing. The resistance has been more durable and sustained than I expected it to be.”
The fossil fuel industry has “captured control of too many governments” and even the UN’s top climate science apparatus “to a shocking degree”, Gore said, citing recent reporting by the Guardian that Saudi oil operatives were involved in crafting high-profile UN climate reports.

Gore said that while many developing countries still struggle to get adequate financing for renewables and battery projects, he is confident that the mass adoption of clean energy, now routinely cheaper than fossil fuels such as coal and gas, will take hold.
“The day is coming when our momentum will overtake the resistance. We’re getting very close now,” he said. “I think we are going to win this. The remaining question is whether we will win it in time to avoid those negative tipping points I talked about.”

Obviously much of what Gore has claimed over the years simply hasn’t happened. Sea level rise has failed to accelerate. Disruption to food production hasn’t worsened – food production is soaring. And the polar ice has failed to melt away.
But his biggest claim, that “resistance” to renewables is impeding adoption, is complete nonsense. The real problem is renewables don’t work.
There is nobody preventing the purchase of renewable systems. Anyone who wants solar panels or batteries or even wind turbines can buy whatever they want, on any scale they want.
Want to power an entire neighbourhood with renewables? Raise the finance, buy a big patch of land, and plant the solar panels and batteries. Nobody will stop you.
Of course, you better be careful about what you actually promise to deliver.
I have a friend who has solar powered his whole house, after ordering components from China – 10s of thousands of watts of solar panel capacity. Apart from one unpleasant surprise, when a set of batteries he ordered from China turned out to be much smaller batteries with rocks in the case to make up the weight, he pretty much got what he wanted.
But even with all this my friend still has to switch on grid power from time to time, especially during air-conditioner season.
My friend will probably have the last laugh when the Aussie East Coast Aussie power grid collapses under the weight of bureaucratic stupidity – power some of the time is better than no power. Prepping for when government lets us down is more my friend’s thing than the fake climate crisis – a position I have some sympathy for. But you can’t run a civilisation on an energy source which keeps letting you down.
Al Gore might be able to persuade people and governments to try renewables, I’m not denying his powers of persuasion. What he cannot do is convince former enthusiasts to continue embracing renewables, when the economic reality of unreliable, expensive energy smacks them in the face, like what is happening right now in Germany.

Because people must have a religion to believe in. In a mostly post-religion society, environmentalism became a new religion for many people. It’s a shared belief, it has sin and redemption, missionaries and phophets, high priests, holy peer review journals, universities that double as environmental-faith seminaries, and even an end of days scenario. It is a nasty religion that does a lot of harm, but it survives because it gives some people meaning in their lives.

You are right Gyan1. When a person has lectured or scolded others about climate change, it is hard for them to admit that they were wrong. If they felt morally superior and it felt good to feel morally superior, they will block out any conflicting information that indicates that they were really just a fool. A guy like Al Gore will probably never admit he was wrong all along. Like Paul Ehrlich with his book the Population Bomb. I understand that even though populations leveled off and are declining in developed countries, he still doesn’t acknowledge that he was wrong.

The IPCC only managed to convince anybody about Anthropogenic Global Warming by lying about the separation between natural CO2 and fossil CO2. The fossil CO2 was supposed to remain in the atmosphere by more than 100 years rather than the 3.8 years of natural CO2. Since these are identical molecules this is a lie.
Rather than CO2 causing warming, CO2 is caused by warming with the source being oceans and land. The burning of fossil fuels is a minor contributor.
The IPCC didn’t consider that humans exhale ca. 8 million metric tons of CO2 everyday. To this should be added all the CO2 exhaled by domestic animals ranging from cattle to canaries. Baking and brewing release lots of CO2. Burning fossil fuels does release substantial amounts of CO2.
At the Mauna Loa Obs. in Hawaii, the concentration of CO2 in dry air is currently 425 ppmv. One cubic meter of this air has a mass of 1,290 g and contains a mere 0.84 g of CO2 at STP. Why is there so little CO2 in the air? Because Mother Nature has devised the following CO2 capture and storge systems: (1) plants on land, (2) plants in the oceans and in land surface fresh waters, and (3) the oceans and land surface fresh water.
Since the pH of the oceans is 8.1, the absorbed CO2 is converted to mostly bicarbonate anion and a some carbonate anion. These are used by animals to construct the shells. The rigid structures of corals are made from calcium carbonate.
The bottom line is that there too little CO2 in the air to cause global warming as claimed by the corrupt IPCC and the unscrupulous collaborating scientist.

No, hardly anything is ever proven or settled.
With regard to ocean CO2 balance, it’s more than that. Some questions are barely asked because with millennial cycles involved in transfer of heat and CO2, the answers might turn out to be inconvenient.

In general, Occam’s razor applies here. Nature can explain nearly everything we have observed with regard to climate change. Ocean conveyer belts are known to move vast quantities of mass and energy. These operate on long cycle times dwarfing generations of our short lives.
Works-Occam’s razor and I have abused my students for years. I figured that the long cycle times were actually the problem, so to speak, but I wanted confirmation. Yes, its an obvious and “simple” answer (to me) but I was concerned that I might have a blind spot in my thinking-or over thinking- and was missing something also obvious. Long term thinking is not my bailiwick on some things-glaciers, orogenies, and landscape changes (physical or conceptual) yes-oceans no. Thank you for your time and consideration, I appreciate it.

Vast quantities of CO2 are breathed OUT by all the plants and animals in the world at night, and much of that is breathed IN again by all the plants and other photosynthesising organisms in the seas in vast numbers.

The faith that the alarmist believers demand of all of us is what makes the nonbelievers religious heretics. When discussing all of the things that are made from, or enabled by ‘fossil fuels’, transportation of goods is rightly mentioned. However, we should remind the anti-hydrocarbons army, including those morons superglued to road surfaces, that those roads are also made from hydrocarbons. Trucks that deliver literally everything to everywhere do so on a strip of tarmac stretching millions of miles around the planet. There is no practical substitute available.

Gore is much like some of the leaders of Germany and Japan in early 1945: the fact that World War 2 was lost for them wasn’t recognizable and they believed some miraculous weapons or strategies would enable ultimate victory. So they dragged out the conflict unnecessarily bringing even more death and destruction on their populations. Likewise with the climate fight. People have recognized it for being largely a scam and the miraculous renewable technologies supposedly coming on stream are in no way able to supplant fossil fuels. In other words, they’re whipping the proverbial dead horse but refusing to take its heart rate for confirmation.

No one cares any more what Al Gore has to say about anything. Some newspapers may pretend to treat him with respect, but the public has been ignoring him and his witless crusade for three decades. It doesn’t matter any more what he says or writes. It is all ignored by the public.
For Al, truth is irrelevant. He has the Revealed Truth, and he will continue shrieking it at the top of his voice until the day he dies. For us, the best revenge is that he will die in the knowledge that, in his great AGW project, he was a complete failure.

I asked AI to create an image of Al Gore dressed up in the ceremonial garb of the Frenchman in the climactic scenes from the Raiders of the Lost Ark. You can do that yourself and go on to the face meltdown scene to match the predictions and the climate crusades themselves.
Al Gore may not be following the actual news, because to me it is becoming clear in those regions of the world which took his warnings seriously and spent a fortune of windmills, solar panels and vast long stretches of poles and wires that they have arrived at the point of diminishing returns. At the same time there is almost nowhere properly covered by battery back-up and almost all the sources of non-fossil fuel power generation have gas-fired power stations for the times of no wind and no sun.
NO CO2 emissions have been saved. The fossil fuel used to manufacture etc the windmills and panels is never recovered in the short lifetime of both technologies.
No matter what Gore does or says he is wrong. Adding more CO2 into the atmosphere can’t cause catastrophic runaway global warming. Whether CO2 can or can’t cause a crisis wind and solar can’t replace fossil fuel and nuclear. So Gore and people like him are promoting an unworkable solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. You can’t get any dumber than that.
