Russia has vetoed an attempt to pass a resolution which would have made climate change UN Security Council business.
Russia vetoes UN resolution linking climate change, security
Russia has vetoed a first-of-its-kind U.N. Security Council resolution casting climate change as a threat to international peace and security
By JENNIFER PELTZ Associated Press14 December 2021, 07:30
NEW YORK — Russia on Monday vetoed a first-of-its-kind U.N. Security Council resolution casting climate change as a threat to international peace and security, a vote that sank a years-long effort to make global warming a more central consideration for the U.N.’s most powerful body.
Spearheaded by Ireland and Niger, the proposal called for “incorporating information on the security implications of climate change” into the council’s strategies for managing conflicts and into peacekeeping operations and political missions, at least sometimes. The measure also asked the U.N. secretary-general to make climate-related security risks “a central component” of conflict prevention efforts and to report on how to address those risks in specific hotspots.
…
But India and veto-wielding Russia voted no, while China abstained.
…
Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia complained that Monday’s proposed resolution would turn “a scientific and economic issue into a politicized question,” divert the council’s attention from what he called “genuine” sources of conflict in various places and give the council a pretext to intervene in virtually any country on the planet.
“This approach would be a ticking time bomb,” he said.
India and China questioned the idea of tying conflict to climate, and they predicted trouble for the Glasgow commitments if the Security Council — a body that can impose sanctions and dispatch peacekeeping troops — started weighing in more.
“What the Security Council needs to do is not a political show,” Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun said.

The resolution, if passed, could have led to utter insanity – UN peacekeepers deployed to the Amazon to protect the rainforest, using military weapons against Brazilian forest workers, or even an international military blockade of Aussie coal exports.
Although the bill was officially sponsored by Ireland and Niger, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Biden administration helped push it forward. John Kerry has been pushing hard for people to accept his evidence free claim that climate change is a security threat.
I suggest Russian troops massing on the Ukrainian border while Putin publicly laments the fall of the Soviet Union, and Chinese aggression in the South China Sea and the Indian border, with a real risk of imminent invasion of Taiwan, are probably slightly more pressing security concerns than what the weather will be like a hundred years from now.
Update (EW): The UN press release and background is available here.
Update (EW): John Shewchuk points out this is a repeat attempt, they also tried this UN Security climate stunt last February.

Lets arrest John Kerry as an imminent threat to world peace
Or we could just charge Kerry with being a traitor to the United States. Every move he makes harms the United States.
Oh what a crazy, mirror universe we live in, where the leaders of Russia and China are more level headed and peace minded than the lunatics running the state-wide asylums in the “West”.
“and peace minded”
Well, I wouldn’t go that far.
The US 800 foreign military bases are for peaceful purposes – the peace of the graveyard.
Were you rote Armee Fraktion before going on the Putin payroll?
A lot of people need U.S. military protection. There are a lot of bad guys out there in the world that need reining in.
Thank heavens at least one country on the security council still retains some common sense!
It only needs one vote to veto on The Security Council. China was abstaining but we have a reasonable idea about Chinese thinking.
Syria: western nations seek to bypass Russian veto at UNIdea is to refer chemical weapons issue to UN general assembly, where Russia’s security council veto would not apply

There are tricks to get around this. I wonder if they will follow exactly this route now?
The UN has Putin exactly where he wants them
Ireland huh?
What bemuses me about Ireland – a country that is proud of blaming England for all it’s problems – requires the RAF to defend it’s airspace from the Russian Bear.
Russia still probes with Tu95s. Just because the Cold War ended didn’t mean the aircraft stopped.
Launch the Cessna!
I think the Irish also put a bit of blame on the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church in Ireland, have been a scapegoat in many ways but sexual abuse did happen and the mother and baby homes and forced slave labour of women in laundries and on farms along with these institutions forcibly taking the Women’s babies and selling them to Americans. You can see where Irish People might hold a little grudge but there are also a huge amount of People who are just Church bashers in Ireland today because they don’t believe in God or Jesus nor do they want to and want to live their material lives without a care or thought for God.
During the Cold War, London had fits about Shannon Airport – it could land Soviet bombers they claimed, and Soviet subs could launch missiles in a western blindspot to London.
Meanwhile Shannon Airport was used for US rendition to black torture sites (Poland and Romania?). US crews were openly in fatigues at the cantines. For sure Kerry knows this and someone had to sign off on such blatant abuse. And after all Barry O’Bama is more Irish than Kerry.
Well in Fairness the British stood by during the Potatoes famine and allowed 1 million Irish People die of starvation while they shipped any food we had abroad to their colonies and among other atrocities over nearly 1000 years like kicking people off their land and making them pay rent to British landlords and charging them more money for light tax if they had larger windows. Don’t get me started on the black and tan scum bags the British unleashed on Ireland. But imagine having to defend Irish Air space ? oh how terrible.
Vladimir just knows this climate change thingy is nonsense. How does he know? Because his Russian Academy tells him so. And those scientists are quite a bit more knowledgeable than the clowns writing the UN reports.
Can I move to Russia? I am getting sick of the west, it is a shit hole.
You have to demonstrate a flat foot squat before they consider you for a visa.
I’ve posted these before, but I guess most people missed it. These three videos were created to be a take-down of various notions among American conservatives concerning Putin and his “conservative” influence on Russia.
Cultural Enrichment
Living in Russia
Societal Degeneracy
Pretty sure when you really understand the living conditions in Russia, you’ll change your tune.
So you think American conservatives have a soft spot in their hearts for Putin?
I’m an American conservative and I don’t have a soft spot for Putin. I look at reality.
American conservatives that have a deep understanding of the underlying principles of Locke and Jefferson and the rest of the country’s founders, or who understand the economics of the Austrian or Chicago schools, no, definitely not.
Conservatives that have traveled widely and outside the typical tourist lanes, and/or have genuine interaction in other countries sufficient to gain a sense of the mindset of those places, no, not them either.
But most conservatives are going primarily on instinct and have a shallow understanding of the principles. (Not as shallow as the left, but shallow none the less.) A lot of them see in Putin a man who stands with his head high, speaks with a firm voice and doesn’t bow to pressure. When they saw Obama bowing before Arab leaders, telling Putin he’d have more room to work after the election while appearing to cow to Xi, it made a big impression. When Romney wouldn’t put up a decent debate against Obama for fear of the left accusing him of racism, they noticed. Many American conservatives correctly identified a large swath of their leaders as weak.
Lots of working class conservatives admired Putin for his strength, if for nothing else, and talked favorably about him. I know, 𝗜 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. I tried to explain what was really going on, but again, they didn’t have the philosophical grounding to understand the points I was making, nor had most of them ever traveled enough to understand the differences between the US and other countries. Some of them still see Putin in a favorable light to this day.
Give Ed. Snowden a call.
Why not try the Ukraine first, just for a while to acclimatise first, and with a bit of luck you want’t need to go to Russia, Russia will come to you.
Spasiva Vlad.
After USSR fell apart Vlad the Terrible was for a while (between jobs) earning living as a taxi driver, hence as such has to be credited with at least a bit common sense in his thinking.
If in any doubt you ask any London or New York cabby driver, or better don’t, they hardly can speak any English these days.
While I was writing this I was listening to the UK’s parliament Science & Technology committee questioning scientist Dr Kate Bingham, the author of the UK’s successful vaccination drive, calling all previous virus variants the Wuhan strain at least twice.
Good for her and good to hear an honest scientist.
Let’s follow her lead and revive term Wuhan virus.
Another eminent scientist, professor Xihong Lin also testifying to the S & T committee, referred to Wuhan strain too.
That’s what it is: The Wuhan virus. The only people who refuse to use its proper name are Chinese dictators and American Leftwing Democrats.
That came first from MI6’s chief Dearlove :
Telegraph on June 3, 2020: “I do not think that this [pandemic] started as an accident…. It raises the issue, if China ever were to admit responsibility, does it pay reparations? I think it will make every country in the world rethink how it treats its relationship with China.”
Sky News on July 12, 2020, “I subscribe to the theory … that it’s an engineered escapee from the Wuhan Institute (of Virology).”
This is the very same Dearlove of Russiagate infamy. Dodgy dossiers are par for the course – forgotten Blair’s Iraq WMD hoax already?
At that taxi chat, he wittingly said first thing he cleaned the Kremlin of CIA agents.
Not surprising as he was DDR KGB, speaks fluent German.
The Neo-cons that destroyed Russia under Yeltsin took a real beating.
“If in any doubt you ask any London or New York cabby driver, “
That brought to mind a song from the 90’s (Shiny Black Taxi cab by Shampoo) where a Cab Driver speaks at the end:
“D’you Know I Had Them Girls In
The Back Of The Cab The Other Week
Sick All Over The Back Seat
I Had To Charge ‘Em Double
They Ought’a Bring Back The Birch
You Know, Bring Back National Service
Bring Back Hanging! Hanging?
Hanging’s To Good For ‘Em
I’m Not Prejudice Or Anything
You Know. These Mini-Cab Drivers…
They’ve Got No Tags, No Insurance
Some Of ‘Em Don’t Even Have A Bleedin’ Car!
Anyway John, Where Yer Wanna Go Then…”
Do turkeys vote for Xmas?
Of course Putin Vetoed UN Security Council Climate Resolution
Russia is a petrochemical state.
It is ALL it has got with which to push it’s agenda on the world.
There is ZERO that it makes to export to the world in order for Putin to make his (much personally) Roubles and maintain the illusion to it’s citizens that it has power.
And, being a xenophobic and paranoic country – keep him in power.
Russians are not xenophobic, they love other peoples and even more so their countries. The old Soviet Union that Putin craves so much had beside Russians also Ukrainiens, Byelorussens, Moldaviens, Azerbaijanes,
Georgians, Armenians, Uzbekes, Kazakhs, Tajikis, Kirghiz, Turkmens, Lithuaniens, Latvians, Estons, Abkhaz, Adyghes, Aleuts, Assyrians, Avars, Bashkirs, Bulgarians, Buryats, Chechens, Chinese, Chuvash, Cossacks, Tatars, Evenks, Finns, Gagauz, Germans, Greeks, Hungarians, Ingushes, Inuit, Jews, Kalmyks, Karakalpaks, Karelians, Kets, Koreans, Lezgins, Maris, Mongols, Mordvins, Nenetses, Ossetians, Poles, Roma, Romanians, Tats, Tatars, Tuvans, Udmurts, Yakuts and dozens of these other ethnic groups
I agree with you, Anthony. Putin is the last person on Earth who would want UN Climate Change Inspectors on his property.
Here’s an idea – if the UN wants climate security, why not hire all those chimney sweeps and exhaust checkers? The would only need a few weeks boot camp – fire, smoke, CO2 they already know.
Hey, it’s an army in waiting! And to top it off, it is inspections by the people, of the people, for all the people’s fires.
I had one inspect my log burner the other day, no blue helmet in sight. But that was before the Russian Veto.
Anyway see what happened to the last Russian Veto – they will wiggle around it.
The UN may be waiting to see if Biden’s “Build Back Better” boondoogle passes Congress.
If it does, the UN will borrow AOC’s 300,000 Climate Change Brownshirts, who will be hired under the new budget law, and the UN can use them to harrass non-complying nations into obedience. Although they might have some difficulty getting into Russia and China. But no problem, they have lots of Western nations they can harrass, so there will be plenty of work for them.
Wrong Mr Banton – Oil now represents less than 35% of Russian GDP and – thanks to sanctions – it has become a major food exporter (world’s largest exporter of wheat), has the lowest sovereign debt, highest gold reserves as % of GDP and most importantly, has the highest level of autarky in the developed world. All happened under Putin. Read more. .
I think maybe you overlook a lot.
“ (world’s largest exporter of wheat)”
Capt. Kirk: Does everybody know about this wheat but me?
Chekov: Oh, not everyone, Captain. It’s a Russian invention.
Pity about the Russophobia! Spoils every article it contains.
Almost every WUWT thread is poisoned with russophobia. Then along comes Russia and speaks sense on climate. What is a poor russophobe troll to do?
And that is not as bad as Sinophobia – another Phobe Virus strain infecting WUWT.
Yes, it’s a shame we can’t get along better with Russia. The people want it, but the rulers do not.
Including the news….
Illegal immigrant Russians nabbed making run at U.S. border – Washington Times
Why not? Everyone else is.
How many people are desperately trying to break into Russia and China?
Clearly, no where is off limits for the Climate alarmist movement.
Well done India Russia and China though China chickened out of stating their actual objection.
“Although the bill was officially sponsored by Ireland”
Ireland will do whatever fits the narrative or makes Ireland shine as a perfect little Island that will do good no matter the consequences, that’s irrelevant, as long as Ireland is seen in a positive light, they crave to be loved. I know, I’m Irish and I live in Ireland but it sickens me to see what is happening here. Irish People are heavily brainwashed by Government controlled media, and all TV and Radio is controlled by the BAI which are the Government, they regulate ( control ) the TV Radio stations, we also have a very heavily biased media in favour of US Democrats, and Biden and will not say anything bad about Biden, yet Mr Trump was never out of the Irish media a single day he was in office and every single thing about Trump in the media was anti trump.
Ireland has no backbone to do what’s right especially by it’s own People, Image is priority and will do what they’re told, look at the bank bailout for example. Decades of hardships for an issue not caused by the people yet the Government sold them out to the IMF and bondholders while their taxes sky rocketed and we’re told to be thankful!
Now we have ever increasing carbon taxes which the government refused to reduce as fuel costs rocket and when the high fuel costs, Carbon tax and VAT were challenged in parliament the Irish Prime Minister or Taoiseach had the audacity to blame the E.U for not allowing reduced VAT on Energy and in relation to Carbon tax said “we all have to do our bit to save the earth” so while he gets to be chauffeured around in his taxpayer Diesel and take the Government Jet ordinary people struggle to keep the lights and heat on and sometimes have to choose between the two or both, there’s an ever increasing amount of People having to install pay-as-you go meters to stop bills mounting and when they don’t have the money the bills are not mounting up and the heat or lights or both go off. The Irish Government are despicable.
Create world crisis, Climate change, COVID to blind us from real issues such as the UN take over.
Cripes, sounds just like the UK!
And there was I thinking there was a border….
Even Brussels fiddles around with a border….
Since they are being a CA clone, warn them about this :
California Looks To Stab Rooftop Solar Customers In The Back With Massive Incentive Rollback, New Fees
https://www.zerohedge.com/energy/california-looks-stab-rooftop-solar-customers-back-massive-incentive-rollback
British Government, Irish Government, they’re all the same, all bought and paid for and will do what they’re told by the UN, corrupt to the core.
Look what our police force want to do in Ireland
https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/politics/arid-40762074.html
Imagine, giving a position of Police commissioner to someone who’s father was killed by the IRA free rain to terrorise the Irish People with these new found powers if the bill is passed ? And pass all this while there’s hardly a word about it in the media because it’s all dominated by COVID and climate change nonsense. Power to come after anyone who opposes the Government lockdowns or covid passes , without Judicial review or the right to a solicitor?
But getting back to Solar PV incentives, the Irish Government already rolled back some years ago but intend to offer them again per Kwh sent to the grid but probably offer very little, currently anyone dumb enough has to give excess energy sent to the grid in Ireland for free.
In Ireland the Government want people taking out loans and paying 12% interest to retrofit heat pumps and insulation costing many thousands or tens of thousands of Euros more expensive for retrofits, that would fill my tank with oil for many years! They can go whistle.
Well done Russia. The leftwing/marxist UN and its acolytes such as the IPCC is already far far too big for its boots and needs rigorous curtailment.
We’re just lucky there aren’t worse things going on right now like a pandemic with millions dead, clean water shortages, unsustainable sovereign debt increases, and junk science driving all political decisions and institutions. We would probably not recognize the next real crisis about to hit us with all eyes on the wrong issues.
Not often I’ll ever say this but thank goodness for Putin.
He could be the next leader of Europe.
This needs to be followed up with weekly climate scare science critiques by the Kremlin and all of its agencies in succession, much like the Obama parading of agencies with weekly climate press releases.
The first time I’ve ever agreed with Putin. He’s not stupid, he’s got lot$ of oil and ga$ he wants to $ell.
China’s abstention is really telling. They obviously won’t vote for something that would shut down all their coal-fired power plants, but they wanted to “save face” by not vetoing it, so they could claim that they’re not against limiting CO2 emissions, just not in THEIR backyard.
And, of course, they want to $ell lot$ of $olar panels using rare-earth elements only found in China.
Russia and China are following the science, while the brain drain continues in the West.
thanks for this
when I read Red Notice it sounded so fantastic that I thought I was reading Ian Flemmings James Bond
Having watched the video mentioned I now know that Browder was indeed telling a lie and that he was the guilty banker that stole the 230MMUSD but need a scape goat
alway the same true to the nationality group of financiers who created america – history repeats
When Russia and China are leading the way on protecting our freedoms and liberties in the UN, we are in big trouble…
Prisoner human as Reacher would say.
Gotta call a spade a spade…. kudos to Russia foe torpedoing that climate ship. Unfortunately, the inmates are running the asylum here in USA.
Occasionally I develop a soft spot for our Vlad. It doesn’t usually last more than 5 minutes but that veto in the UN was one of those occasions.
