Greta Thunberg: The West Owes Former Colonies a Climate Debt

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to Greta rich countries have to pay reparations for the ancestral crime of bringing industry, roads, hospitals, schools and comfort in old age to the world.

WATCH: Greta Thunberg Claims West Owes Colonised Countries a ‘Historical Debt’ to Drastically Cut Emissions

VICTORIA FRIEDMAN 6 Nov 2021

Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has implied that the West owes a “historical debt” to countries in the Global South to drastically reduce carbon emissions due to the legacy of colonialism.

Speaking at a Fridays for Future youth protest in Glasgow, Scotland, on the fringes of the United Nations COP26 climate conference, 18-year-old Thunberg said: “The climate and ecological crisis, of course, does not exist in a vacuum. It is directly tied to other crises and injustices that date back to colonialism and beyond.

“Crises based on the idea that some people are worth more than others and therefore have the right to exploit others and steal their land and resources.”

The teen climate activist continued by implying that the climate crisis cannot be solved without confronting these “injustices”, saying: “It is very naive of us to think that we can solve this crisis without addressing the root cause of it.”

She then alluded to the West, using the increasingly popular term ‘Global North’ to describe the developed world — compared to the ‘Global South’, which is also being used more frequently in recent years to discuss climate change and ‘decolonising’ the alleged crisis — having a “historical debt” to the countries it colonised, which she says are on the “front line” of the “climate crisis”.

Greta, as a resident of a former colony of the “global south”, you are welcome to send me climate reparations. I’m sure if you contact Anthony we can figure out how you can get the cash to me.

I’m sure other WUWT readers have historic grievances which require reparations. Make sure you list your grievances below, so Greta understands your need for climate cash.

Greta Thunderpants emissions are the ones that are doing the most harm. Her and the herd of climate propagandists continually spewing unsubstantiated predictions of doom and flying from place to place to feed the fear. I think litigation is in order. Let’s have them all in court where they can present their “evidence” that what they say is true.

She be talking publicly for the rest of her life. Once some gets used to the limelight they rarely leave it voluntarily.
A better question is, how much longer will anyone pay attention to her?

Reparations … Reparations … Reparations
Or, MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!

One thing I notice missing from the CAGW debate is nowhere is greater liberty and freedom is talked about and greater wealth for everyone, only reductions in it. Reparations are nothing more than asking someone not responsible to pay for something they had no control over. In others, wealth transfer from people with money, to people who have much more than you ever will. Because we already know that the people pushing reparations will get the majority of the money.

“Crises based on the idea that some people are worth more than others and therefore have the right to exploit others and steal their land and resources.”

Do a people who were not alive owe others who were not alive, anything that happened before especially when many of the ones presumed to be owed have migrated to the countries claimed to owe?

If they do owe should they take back the infrastructure and other benefits left there. Of course not, it’s all nonsense and so is the climate claim.

In response, I would say this to Greta Thunberg:

“Dear Greta, I’m sure you missed this lesson in grade school because you were out leading protests instead of acquiring knowledge about the real world and its history, but it is a fact that the India-Pakistan subcontinent was a British colony from 1858 to 1947.

And that India and Pakistan are located north of the equator; that is, in the “Global North”.

So why are you actively discriminating against former colonies in the “Global North” as compared to those in the “Global South”???

You do know what the term “discrimination” means, don’t you?”

Greta doesn’t want there to be no government.
She wants just the opposite. She wants an all powerful government that is run by people like herself, so that she can force the rest of the world to live as she wants them to.

November 7, 2021 1:17 pm

This is incredibly stupid! This argument has been central to the UNFCCC process since 1992. Greta did not invent it. Most developing countries have long espoused it. Is your understanding of the battle that shallow?

Oh Boy! The UK can pay for Biden’s Crazed Climate Plan in the US! The United States is a Former Colony! Louisiana can bill France! Alaska can try to send bills to Putin in Russia!

Oh what fun…..

Poor Spain — it will have to fund all of Central and South America AND the whole of the drought stricken US Southwest, I suggest that Spain could make a deal to forgo any payment to the US and just take California back — I’d support that.

ronk ==> Spain and Portugal have not always been separate nations, and not always even nations. They share the Iberian Peninsula and have been off and on over historical times united by shared dynasties of rulers….for many years, the Moors and Berbers of North Africa.

Portugal finally became a separate kingdom in about 1200, as part of the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by armies supported by France and Christian rulers of what is now northern Spain.

In an astonishing exhibition of hubris, the Treaty of Tordesillas was ratified by the Crown of Castile and the King of Portugal in 1494, which “divided the newly discovered lands outside of Europe into two equal halves, the east side belonging to Portugal, and the west to Castile (later to become part of Spain). “

And, if I’m not mistaken, it was the Pope divided South America between the Spanish and the Portuguese.
(What is basically now Brazil to Portugal and the rest to Spain.)

Gunga ==> Yes, sort of — it was the Treaty of Tordesillas — between brokered by the Pope between Portugal (then a still fairly new kingdom) and Castile (there was not yet a nation called Spain).

Not known if Greta has a clue about this :
The Spider’s Web: Britain’s Second Empire by Nicholas Shaxson (best selling author and former FT journalist) :
https://vimeo.com/ondemand/spiderswebfilm

Shaxson has written detailed books on the City of London’s second British empire. Even spoke at the London School of Economics, in the lions den so to speak (since removed from the LSE site).

I know many are distracted by Greta’s tantrums, Prince Charles’ tones, billionaires’ wokeness, and IPCC non-science, have great difficulty with finance.

Yet at FLOP26 the financial thrust is direct in-your-face, as they are sure the distractions work.
