‘Picked up his patient’s chart & penned in the words ‘climate change’

Times Colonist: Climate change enters the ER: For the first time in his 10 years as a physician, the ER doctor picked up his patient’s chart and penned in the words “climate change.” “If we’re not looking at the underlying cause, and we’re just treating the symptoms, we’re just gonna keep falling further and further behind,” he told Glacier Media when asked why he did it. At the same time, Merritt says he hoped another family physician would read the chart, and one day, consider drawing a straighter line between their patients’ health and climate change.
… The response was immediate. Roughly 40 doctors and nurses at the small hospital — all busy trying to manage a pandemic and their regular professional lives — came together under the banner Doctors and Nurses for Planetary Health. … Starting Thursday at noon, Lau says the non-partisan group is calling on the provincial government to, among other things, declare an “ecological emergency” and end subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. “A lot of us were really shook by this summer, by the heat dome and the wildfires that are just escalating every year,” she says. “This is about moving forward in a way that saves lives.”

Calls to add ‘climate change’ to death certificates – New study demands ‘climate change’ be added as ‘pre-existing condition’

Cause of Death? Climate Change. “Climate change is a killer, but we don’t acknowledge it on death certificates,” co-author Dr Arnagretta Hunter, from The Australian National University (ANU) Medical School, said. “There is second component on a death certificate which allows for pre-existing conditions and other factors.

When a patient in her 70s came into the emergency department at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, B.C., Dr. Kyle Merritt had no idea hundreds of people were dying of heat across the province.
It was late June, and British Columbia was consumed under a heat wave that would soon go down as both the hottest and deadliest in Canadian history.
The head of the hospital’s emergency department, Merritt could see the aggravated toll the extreme heat took on patients battling multiple health problems at once, often with little money.
“She has diabetes. She has some heart failure. … She lives in a trailer, no air conditioning,” says Merritt of the senior patient.
“All of her health problems have all been worsened. And she’s really struggling to stay hydrated.”
As the mercury climbed, more patients arrived and pressure on the hospital mounted. Merritt and his colleagues tried to make sense of a surge in heat illness most had only seen in medical school.
“We were having to figure out how do we cool someone in the emergency department,” says the doctor. “People are running out to the Dollar Store to buy spray bottles.”
Merritt remembers hitting a tipping point, the extreme heat an opening salvo in another summer of crisis. He started contacting other doctors and nurses, in Prince George, Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria.
The response was immediate. Roughly 40 doctors and nurses at the small hospital — all busy trying to manage a pandemic and their regular professional lives — came together under the banner Doctors and Nurses for Planetary Health.“I was worried about the summer that was coming,” says Merritt of the rising number of health-care workers desperate to talk about how climate change is affecting their patients’ health.
“I was really quite amazed at how many people have decided to jump in.”
Just as doctors and nurses started to make sense of the record heat, it cleared — only to be replaced by a blanket of wildfire smoke.
Climate change enters the ER
…
When a patient came in struggling to breathe, Merritt knew the smoke — that hadn’t lifted from the region for days on end — had made a case of asthma worse.
For the first time in his 10 years as a physician, the ER doctor picked up his patient’s chart and penned in the words “climate change.”
“If we’re not looking at the underlying cause, and we’re just treating the symptoms, we’re just gonna keep falling further and further behind,” he told Glacier Media when asked why he did it.
“It’s me trying to just … process what I’m seeing. We’re in the emergency department, we look after everybody, from the most privileged to the most vulnerable, from cradle to grave, we see everybody. And it’s hard to see people, especially the most vulnerable people in our society, being affected. It’s frustrating.”
At the same time, Merritt says he hoped another family physician would read the chart, and one day, consider drawing a straighter line between their patients’ health and climate change.
Smoke and heat affect more than peoples’ physical health. Merritt says he saw a number of patients already suffering from depression or anxiety have their symptoms worsen during the wildfire season. Wildfire smoke even triggered flashbacks in a patient who was coping with post-traumatic stress disorder from his time as a soldier.
…
Doctors at the feet of power
As global heating takes centre stage in Glasgow this week, Merritt and about 40 other nurses and doctors are taking their concerns to Nelson’s city hall, where the group will rally alongside at least 130 more health-care workers demonstrating at the provincial legislature in Victoria.
“We wanted to do something big. We wanted to gather at the feet of power,” says Dr. Kelly Lau, a family physician based in Vancouver, who is among those headed to Victoria Nov. 4.
Starting Thursday at noon, Lau says the non-partisan group is calling on the provincial government to, among other things, declare an “ecological emergency” and end subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.
“A lot of us were really shook by this summer, by the heat dome and the wildfires that are just escalating every year,” she says. “This is about moving forward in a way that saves lives.”

Surely it’s a doctors job to record observable medical facts. Researchers pick through that data later to determine overarching patterns.
This is like a fireman recording the cause of a suspicious fire as ‘traumatic childhood’.

Even the suggestion of ‘climate change’ being a real condition from which one medically suffers from is preposterous and unethical.
The doctor is not fit to practice.
Canadians need to start taking charge of their own health care, and stop being conditioned.

Cause of death was “Climate Change”?
It cost too much to heat his house because of “Climate Change”?
Silly PR Stunt.
Cause of death was inept medical care. The patient received medical care from a mentally ill doctor who thinks climate change kills people–therefore that medical care was the cause of death.
For those in BC your immediate reaction should be to make sure this quake never treats you or your family.
Is climate change here in the room with us? Can you see this climate change right now? Is climate change trying to communicate with us? Is climate change standing next to me?
The profoundly deep combination of narcissism and ignorance required to belief that a local weather event is somehow attributable to a global phenomenon caused by man is not based on science or fact. It is a matter of faith in the Holy Orthodox Church of Anthropogenic Climate Change.
I literally let out a small prayer that this was an Onion article.
Well, prayers are kinda like farts.
I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for the shameful stupidity of the doctors here in British Columbia. It’s unacceptable for an educated person to be so worked up and irrational over empty hyperbole and outright lies. We deserve better.
We not only have the most clueless Prime Minister on the planet (next to New Zealand) even our medical professionals have become infected with the malady.
Blithering idiot and should be stripped of his medical credentials. He could also claim the economy killed her. What an idiot.
Am I the only one losing faith in doctors these days? I think I trust my local plumber more than I trust the average physician.
Just to refresh everyone’s grade school science class. The Pleistocene Ice Age lasted from about 2 million years ago, to 10,000 years ago. 30,000 years ago, when the earth started this latest warming trend, there was a slab of ice that covered the top of this planet from about the middle of Russia to what is now the Canadian US border. That ice was between one and three miles thick. 10,000 years later, as the ice melted due to the added heat, man was eventually able to walk from Asia to the North American Continent. As travelers walked through that melted corridor, they could see the melting ice break off and fall on both sides of the corridor. There was at least one person killed from that falling ice. THAT was the first person who died from Global warming. At that same time, the lush green area of North Africa was slowly turning into the Sahara Desert. The first person who died from lack of water as they traveled across that area, also died of Global Warming.
This planet is warming back to its normal temperature, which is about 4 degrees Celsius hotter than it is now. An “Ice Age” is a “Temporary” period when the average temperature of the planet is colder than normal. That period is over and we are returning to our “Normal” (average) temperature. The warming started long before there were any SUVs, electrical power plants, or large factories. And throwing virgins into volcanoes, planting trees, or giving more tax money to politicians will not stop it. What we can do, during the next thousand years or so, is stop sticking our helpless old people into trailers or nursing homes without any air conditioning.
In 2003, temperatures in France reached more than 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperatures were not unprecedent, but they were unusually high, even breaking known records in some areas. 14,802 people died in France from that heat wave. It strikes me as odd that the Europeans, who are the biggest alarmists about Global Warming, never got around to putting air conditioners into their Government run Nursing Homes.
From this article, maybe Canada should stop planting trees to stop something that they have no chance of stopping, and spend their money buying air conditioners for old people.
It would be foolish to visit a country that has become insane; it might be very dangerous. So before we become the same way here in America, avoid traveling to Canada — not just British Columbia.
I think travel is being allowed now at both the Canadian and Mexican borders if you have proof of vaccination.
That crazy doctor might be coming down here.
Even if it was proven that the woman died from human driven heating, it’s still medically irresponsible to call for warming to be halted when thousands die from cold every year.
More like “mental illness”.
Will they be calling the hypothermia deaths due to not being able to afford to heat their homes “climate change” as well?
So get rid of fossil fuel use and maybe see the number of deaths from cold in winter skyrocket…but those will be ok I guess because they died “for a cause” instead of “because Climate Change”.
“And she’s really struggling to stay hydrated.”
As we all know, in very hot weather hydration is very important.
I find it hard to believe a doctor either can’t treat this effectively or by treating any urinary incontinence causing the inability to stay hydrated
It’s like this doc-
Climate related disasters killing less people (msn.com)
OTOH-
“She has diabetes. She has some heart failure. … She lives in a trailer, no air conditioning,” says Merritt of the senior patient.
“All of her health problems have all been worsened. And she’s really struggling to stay hydrated.”
Well don’t we all have to eschew our fossil fuelled HVAC and chilled water in order to save the planet doc? Have you turned off the hospital aircon forthwith until the Govt close all fossil fuelled generation? No more ICE ambulance pickups as enough is enough with these climate deaths. Demand the hospital be net zero NOW!
To be fair, in Nelson BC, electricity is sourced from Hydroelectric generation.
thats a licence needs removing! they couldnt figure out how to cool someone down in emergency?
really?
they dont have any ice?
utter ftard after publicity
So does that mean people who retire to Florida all eventually die from climate change?
Yes, according to this doctor’s delusonal criteria.
Nelson BC can get hot in the summer, but not as hot as Florida, or even other location in BC that are more popular retirement destinations (eg Kelowna).
Great. So patients’ medical charts are the latest weapon for shitty woke politics?
No matter how brilliant they are within their specialty, most doctors are astonishingly stupid and short-sighted in every other area.
Well, if Bill Gates says it, it must be true. He’s the world’s most honest man and the greatest genius ever. But, back in the real world, this doctor should lose his medical license. He is obviously unfit to treat people who are ill.
This doctor needs a doctor.
Obviously this doctor hasn’t a clue what that person’s problem is.
wow! a classic example of toxic stupidity flying in the face of actual science. I’m glad I’m never likely to need the services of that hospital full of loons.
British Columbia is Canada’s California…
That’s why they call BC “British California”
If they want to go back to “Nature” there won’t be any hospitals.
As both a physician and someone with a lot of experience reviewing medical malpractice I would have to say this physician’s license should be pulled as soon as possible. Medicine is supposed to be a practice based on science, not political fashion. Leave the path of truth and your patients will suffer needlessly.
Next up, all post nasal drip caused by climate change. The doctor will see you now.
