UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a ‘code red for humanity’.
The report released on Monday warns the world is dangerously close to runaway warming – and that humans are “unequivocally” to blame.
Already, greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere are high enough to guarantee climate disruption for decades if not centuries, the scientists conclude.
The UN chief urged an immediate end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.
“The alarm bells are deafening,” Guterres said in a statement. “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.”

PETER JAMES SPIELMANN June 30, 1989UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.
Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ″eco- refugees,′ ′ threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.
He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.
As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.
Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.
″Ecological refugees will become a major concern, and what’s worse is you may find that people can move to drier ground, but the soils and the natural resources may not support life. Africa doesn’t have to worry about land, but would you want to live in the Sahara?″ he said.…

Interestingly it looks like the AP digital copy of the 1989 warning has been damaged, the title is missing when I view it. Possibly someone tried to delete it, and hit the wrong button.
I have to say Guteres has been a little selfish with his use of language, and left a real head scratcher for the organisers of the next COP conference. I mean, how do you top a “code red”?

Imagine the world is a school playground. The UN is the kid standing in the middle of the merry-go-round screaming loudly. While China is helping spin said merry-go-round. Meanwhile the other kids are busy not giving two &^%#s about it. That kid, that’s all he does. He just spins and screams. Best leave him to himself.
Looks like your knowledge of modern drilling techniques are even less than your knowledge of pretty much everything else.
With directional drilling, they can drill a dozen wells from a single platform and as a result make the platforms dozens of miles apart.
Beyond that, when a field does dry up, the wells are capped and the equipment is removed.
Beyond that, those wells are in rural areas, which according to you, no should want to live in anyway.
If one doesn’t believe oil has already peaked, therefore one believes that oil is infinite?

interesting watching NPR tonite beating the catastrophe drum crying how we have to cut back our emissions ( which we have been doing anyway ) without so much as a mention of china and India , who produce more than half the worlds” emissions , even existing . maybe no one told them
The only “death knell” the UN has been trying to sound since shortly after it’s inception is the death of any form of induvial freedom and prosperity. (Except for the leaders.)

Well, in a hospital setting, a “code red” means development of a fire somewhere in the building. However, a “code blue” in a hospital means sudden development of critical status of a patient, often associated with a patient going into cardiac arrest, choking or inability to breathe, or experiencing any other critical medical emergency (e.g., adverse drug reaction).
I guess it depends on your perspective, but I can see cases where “code blue” easily tops “code red”.
What a blessing that Jao Xiden-Heiress is welcoming Millions of eco-Refugees through the non-existent Southern US Border. A blessing to add Millions more First Worlders who were formerly Third Worlders. That will relieve the burden on the planet, wont it?

I wonder what diseases these people are bringing in besides the Wuhan virus? They are coming from all over the world, where there are all sorts of nasty diseases that we don’t want in the U.S. like Ebola.
I don’t think the Xiden-Hairbrain administration is checking for all these things. They just give them a pamphlet and a bus or airplane ticket and that’s the last we hear of them. Until they show up in the hospital or on a wanted poster.
A priority for Republicans in the next election should be to make sure Illegal Aliens do not vote in American elections. Biden is bringing in all these Illegal Aliens in hopes they will vote for Democrats and keep them in power. Republicans need to thwart this unAmerican plan. Good question. The IPCC has been wrong in every prediction they have made and have been doing it for decades.
Like the old saying goes: Lie to me once, shame on you. Lie to me twice, shame on me.
The most dangerous assumption here is that there are effective, economically sustainable substitutes for coal and fossil fuels. There are not. Wind turbines? Solar cells? It is a simple matter to demonstrate that these cannot succeed as practical generators of scale electric power
Anybody who thinks they can must be made to calculate the cost of electrifying one hamlet of 2000 people anywhere in the world with wind and solar. They would have to count the cost of the land, the cost of the wind turbines and solar cells and the cost of natural gas generators to smooth out the fluctuations in generating capacity. What would this cost? At least a hundred million dollars, for the benefit of 2000 people.
All the solutions to the problem of burning of fossil fuels are based on the odd premise that economics doesn’t exist, and that costs don’t matter. Suppose, in the service of mitigating carbon dioxide emissions, we decided to ban cell phones. Well, what politician could sell that to his constituents? Meanwhile, politicians are speaking of banning personal automobiles for anyone who can’t afford an electric vehicle. That’s easy to say now, but very few people are going to go along with it in 2030, when the manufacture and sale of ICE cars will be banned.
Let’s abolish ocean travel in ships powered by fossil fuels. We have a proven technology that worked for centuries: Sailing ships. Yeah. Yeah, that’ll work.
The true irony is that wind and solar are 100% dependent on fossil fuels for their very existence (that is, for material procurement, transport, refinement, transport, assembly, transport, erection, maintenance and repairs, demolition, transport and disposal.
So “end fossil fuels” also effectively means “end wind and solar ‘power’.” (using the term “power” loosely there)
Of course, they’d never say THAT, since it would alert the sheep to the coming slaughter.
The UN has put us on Double Secret Probation!
It’s good that UNICEF stopped all the starvation of children in the world. It now gives them the time to reduce plant food around the world so they can save them from starving all over again.
Considering what progressives have already done to the world, just in the last year, I’m beginning to think the entire argument has become moot.
