Guest essay by Eric Worrall
In 2019 WUWT celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 1989 10 years to save the world UN climate emergency declaration. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is showing real determination to keep this proud tradition alive, by escalating the emergency to a “code red”.
Landmark United Nations report finds the world is running out of time to slow down climate change, humans ‘unequivocally’ to blame

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a ‘code red for humanity’.
The report released on Monday warns the world is dangerously close to runaway warming – and that humans are “unequivocally” to blame.
Already, greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere are high enough to guarantee climate disruption for decades if not centuries, the scientists conclude.
The UN chief urged an immediate end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.
“The alarm bells are deafening,” Guterres said in a statement. “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.”

The 1989 climate emergency promised entire nations would be engulfed by rising seas by the year 2000.
U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked
PETER JAMES SPIELMANN June 30, 1989UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.
Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ″eco- refugees,′ ′ threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.
He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.
As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.
Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.
″Ecological refugees will become a major concern, and what’s worse is you may find that people can move to drier ground, but the soils and the natural resources may not support life. Africa doesn’t have to worry about land, but would you want to live in the Sahara?″ he said.…

Interestingly it looks like the AP digital copy of the 1989 warning has been damaged, the title is missing when I view it. Possibly someone tried to delete it, and hit the wrong button.
I have to say Guteres has been a little selfish with his use of language, and left a real head scratcher for the organisers of the next COP conference. I mean, how do you top a “code red”?

Colour me unimpressed. It want Code Flashing Yellow And Red With Sirens And Claxons.
That’s next week I think.
Say, griff, could you check the script for next week and let us know? That’s a good man.
Actually no claxons for about another month.
Another month? Is that before or after the tipping point? I’m kinda losing track these days.
Well that brings us into September and then we need a month or so of claxons before the great event. Surely there will also be some bombs bursting in air by the last week. By that point our trolls will be on brink of collapse what with the continuous stress of trying to come up with new nonsense to hype hysterically. I do hope poor griff will be up to it.
Does anyone have a link to the original document where Maurice Strong, UN Environment Programme Director declared in 1972 that the world just had 10 years to avoid a catastrophe.
All links I had Error 404

Only healthy and wealthy countries like the USA, Germany, Australia, and the UK can subsidize electricity from breezes and sunshine, and intermittent electricity at best. The 80 percent of the 8 billion on earth living on less than 10 dollars a day cannot subsidize themselves out of a paper bag.
Those poorer countries must rely on affordable and abundant coal for reliable electricity, while residents in the healthy and wealthier countries pay dearly for those subsidies with some of the highest cost for electricity in the world.
Simply put, in these healthy and wealthy countries, every person, animal, or anything that causes emissions to harmfully rise could vanish off the face of the earth; or even die off, and global emissions will still explode in the coming years and decades ahead over the population and economic growth of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, and Africa.
Fixed it for you. There is nothing harmful about CO2 emissions.

China called on rich countries to “pay their debts” on climate change at global talks criticizing developed countries for not doing enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide finance to help poor countries do the same.
Someone please tell me why these people insist that a warm, user-friendly planet is a threat of any kind when we have fossils going back a VERY LONG WAY – like gazillions of years – that say the precise opposite.
Okay, not gazilions, but considering that the oldest evidence of life (fossils!!) were found 40-some years ago in Australia, and they date back 3.5 BILLION years, that alone is more than enough evidence that a warm, user-friendly planet like Earth is better than a frozen iceball like Pluto, anyone of Saturn’s moons or Jupiter’s satellites, etc., etc., etc.

I am mystified by this imbecilic and ridiculous need to stick to a fabricated load of cow pies.
I have a nasty feeling that lessons of the past have NOT been learned – or misapplied. The ideas of the 17thc and 18thc became racism as some thinkers tried to find ways to explain why they had advanced technology and others didn’t – we know how this ended – in eugenics and the holocaust. Current thinking appears to have turned it on its head but still kept the outmoded and racist views espoused in Victorian and pre-victorian colonialism; the idea of the noble savage being more in touch with the living planet and the more technologically advanced you are the more remote the connection to the planet. This is the new cultural racism – a reversal of the Victorian racism where native tribal people are seen as the more enlightened or culturally advanced whilst at the bottom end of the scale, the more affluent, technologically developed European or North American societies are despised as being the least ‘aware’ or relevant. We in the technological societies are supposed to feel an appropriate level of guilt and loss for turning our backs on mother nature and embracing science and technology rather than the obviously far superior tribal wisdom. It’s racism learning a new trick and it’s likely to end just as badly as before.
“I have a nasty feeling that lessons of the past have NOT been learned”
Lessons are rarely learned … we just do the same things & hope for a different outcome.
Thats where religion comes in handy, we can absolve our-self’s of any responsibility, as it’s dog moving in mysterious ways.
Ashamed because that creature UN boss is a national of my country.
Give or take one or two years, he studied at the same high school as I (known as one of the strictest and best of Lisbon at that time); because he has an engeneering degree from a university known by the excellence of its programs of studies of that time.
He traded his intelligence and knowledge by what is needed in a political career.
“He traded his intelligence and knowledge by what is needed in a political career.” Are you certain he had any intelligence to begin with? The world is full of people with excellent memories, and they test well but intelligence is not a prerequisite to getting good grades or doing well in school. Intelligence is what need in business but not politics. After spending a life time watching politics my guess is intelligence is a hindrance not a help and good memory is a definite aid. After all who not impressed by someone who can remember you spouse and children’s names.
Whether memory alone is enough to get good grades depends a lot on which field you are studying.
History, possibly. Good teachers will also ask you to explain and contrast in your answers.
Math, much less so. Memory will help you memorize the various formula, but knowing which formula to use, when takes intelligence. Solving a problem you have never seen before also takes intelligence.
The same goes with most of the physical sciences.
“Are you certain he had any intelligence to begin with?”
Yes. I know the man and I have followed his career closely enough. If you are with him you can understand that he is wise, cultivated and knowledgeable in his private life, and completely dumb and superstitious in his public (political) persona.
“I mean, how do you top a “code red”?”
Code redder then code redderer.
That should take us to 2035.
Threat Level Midnight
That one is property of the Union Of Consarn Scientologists.
Depends who’s in charge of getting the different coloured light bulbs for the alarm panel! (Need a Red Dwarf meme here really).
Next year it will be DOUBLE CODE RED then TRIPLE CODE RED and then they will ramp up the scare a bit more, just to get more money money money…
All the “renewable” energy is only possible with fossil fuels, ALL renewables stand on the shoulders of fossil fuels, they must be made to realize.
Ah yes, the UN and its priorities….

Niger was once identified by the World Health Organization as one of the countries most vulnerable to the coronavirus outbreak.
This vast West African nation—home to one of the world’s highest birth and poverty rates—was once identified by the World Health Organization as one of the most vulnerable to the coronavirus outbreak on a continent that the United Nations predicted would kill millions. Over a year later, many other countries across Africa are in the grip of the pandemic’s third wave, with new variants sending infections to record levels.
But while Niger is struggling with a host of economic and security challenges, it is among a small group of nations on the southern edge of the Sahara that so far has mostly escaped the coronavirus scourge. The reasons—which appear to include a hot and dry climate, sparsely populated and poorly connected settlements and the world’s youngest population—have made Niger a crucial case study for virologists studying the evolution of Covid-19, experts say.
Covid-19 is just the latest plague to arrive in a region beset by crises: An Islamist insurgency has killed over 8,000 and displaced one million, global warming is depleting precious agricultural resources and many locals die prematurely from other infectious diseases.
In March, jihadists killed 137 villagers in Niger’s southwest, the deadliest by suspected jihadists in the country’s history. In June, the terrorists also massacred 160 in neighboring Burkina Faso—as many as recorded Covid-19 deaths in the country during the entire pandemic.
In many poor countries, most of those who die, for whatever reason in remote villages don’t get reported.
Global warming has increased agricultural resources. It is murderous Islamists that disrupt agriculture.
I hope all of the oil producing members of the UN are paying attention or was there a memo advising them ahead of time to tune out on this.
How about sounding a death knell for the IPCC which has NEVER been able to produce a SINGLE accurate prediction?
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………..
Yet here you are…..
So you are saying you are irrelevant?
You have finally said something I can agree with.
Mark I. has managed to disrupt WUWT in a week more than all the regular trolls put together over the past year.
Why don’t you find some other site to vent your whining?
I’m willing to bet that you were banned more for being a boring repetitive troll than for your (lack of) content.
Let’s hope that applies here soon.
Yes, well the best thing to do with a known troll is to completely ignore it. Unless they are a pet troll like griff of course.
Oh, you poor little baby.
Great if it will happen here too. You deserve it.
Funny that.
Violate the rules over and over again, then convince yourself that the only reason why you are banned is because other people are too stupid to understand how brilliant you are.
Aperfect subjec for a Dunning Kruger award for hubris.
Why would they ban you for?
No surprised that you are banned elsewhere as it seems you are working hard to get yourself banned here as well.
He seems to take being banned as a badge of honor. Proof that he is right.
I think you have the right attitude, Carlo.
Wha? Huh? Did someone say something?
I fell asleep.
Irrelevant for your purposes.
Are you the board ? Then you are right.
It’s you that is irrelevant.
This board provides tremendous insights into the topics posted on this website. One of the few boards where I read the responses to the posted articles with as much interest as the articles that are provided. Very educated responses a lot of the time.
The UN sayz — “THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE! If you do not listen to us, we will have no choice but to tell you yet again this is your last chance in two years.”
I wonder… If the temperatures turn colder in a not very distant future… will we have squandered the best climatical period on this hysteria?
This is the best paper on (not) CO2 I have come across through many years of reading climate-science; https://vixra.org/pdf/1811.0498v2.pdf
Thanks for the link.
A futile attempt to make COP 26 relevant. The Chinese and Indians have already kicked it into touch along with ~80 other countries that are demanding their cut of hundreds of billions promised them but not delivered, so they are not playing ball either.
Political theatrics typical of the run up to these worthless events.
It’s nothing more than maintaining jobs for the boys as every single one of these events have made not one iota of difference on rising CO2 levels, nor will they ever.
Great news!
The world will end in 15 to 20 years?
What happened to the AOC 12-year estimate of 3 years ago?
In any case, that will all happen after my 100th birthday.
The world got along fine with 1 billion people in 1800
Why not set THAT as a goal by 2050.
All the OTHER goals are BS
China, India, Russia, etc., will provide lip service for decades
FOSSIL FUELS LUBRICATE MODERN CIVILIZATION
There are no viable substitutes
If governments can shut down and trash their national economies, they can also take immediate action to address the use of fossil fuels by lowering the maximum road speed limits by say 20 mph (~30 kph). A precedent was set during the OPEC crisis in the 1970’s. A presidential ukase or fiat should do the trick.
All that would do is raise speed differentials and cause more accidents, injuries and deaths, all in the pursuit of a non-solution to an imaginary “problem.” And press the police into service as “revenue collectors.”
No thanks.
one of the transportation bills in the 90’s if I remember correctly, the ability of the feds to restrict the speed limits.
I’ve been waiting all day to hear what Greta has to say, I presume she is about on page 3713 by now, only 236 to go, so she’ll be saying something soon.
“high enough to guarantee climate disruption for decades if not centuries, the scientists conclude”
This statement may hint at a better approach for getting people to recognize they are being lied to. People think the source of IPCC reports (and the IPCC itself) is scientists. In reality, every word of the reports is subject to editing by the voting members, who are not required to be scientists; but are required to say humans are causing dangerous climate change if they want to keep getting sent to conferences at five star resorts.
Is there a list of the actual members of the IPCC for this cycle, and any overview of their scientific backgrounds?
From the article: “The UN chief urged an immediate end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.”
That’s not going to happen.
So what is the UN going to do in that case?
According to them, the world is screwed. So we are screwed and there is no turning back because China and India and a lot of other nations are not going to give up on building new coal-fired powerplants. They just won’t, and everyone knows it. So what’s the point of this speech?
The IPCC might as well disband. They have run out of options. They are incapable of reducing the use of fossil fuels.
Yet they have the ear of countless politicians and media idiots who will echo every word verbatim. This is what I don’t understand.
There appear to be a lot of sheep out there, Carlo.
Yes but as the sheep run into the meat grinder in plain view of all, at some point one would hope the rest will turn tail and abandon the idea that “following” those who are leading into mass suicide is a good thing.
Mind the @ur momisugly$$-door interface on your way out.
The futherer behind you get, the less sense you make.
If you think we are at peak oil, then why worry about CO2 emissions. Apparently there’s only enough left to increase the temperature by the same 1C or so since the start of the Industrial Revolution that just happened to coincide with the end of the LIA. Or, was it the end of the LIA that enabled mankind to start the IR?
Maybe you should be sending emails to Anthony Watts.
Is this a threat or a delusion?
With whose money, daddy’s?
And we thought Griff was the worst delusional troll
What amazes me most is; with your self avowed brilliance and purported great wealth, why don’t you have the world’s most viewed blog on self aggrandizement? Why is it you’re still just a pest who has been universally banned?
Eons ago back in college, there was a guy in the dorm where I was living who went around making sure everyone knew that he was the guy who had invented the CT scanner. Knowing this was impossible, everyone just kind of looked at him and blinked, there was nothing to say.
That sort of self aggrandizement is typical of failing kids in their late teens when the grownups aren’t giving them the credit they yearn for and feel they deserve. Martyrdom also figures strongly in their world view.
I’m sure you could, except monopoly(tm) money isn’t real currency.
Fascinating how the troll actually believes he knows better than everyone else, what we need to be talking about.
And he’s gonna nag, and nag, and nag until we all agree that he is the smartest person ever born.
True:
So lets all agree that he is the smartest person ever born.
& then ignore ALL his future comments.
Because WE dumb-wits (including me) are engaging him, he’s taken up ~25% of this thread with trash.
DON’T FEED THE TROLL
How do you club the troll on the head, if you don’t lure it out by feeding it? 🙂
Indeed. Not to mention it’s fun to point and laugh at the trolls (which only feed them, but the laughs are worth it).
If we can’t torment the trolls, who are we going to torment?
“…death knell for coal and fossil fuels”Wait – coal isn’t a fossil fuel? Who knew?
Nice catch, Bruce. Not only are they just flapping their gums, but carelessly so.
Then why is the global temperature 0,4°C lower today than in 1998?
Ok, I’m kidding, but the IPCC doesn’t do that with its climate emergency, right?
In reverse of Heinlein’s quote:
“You have attributed conditions to villainy that simply result from stupidity.”
one must probably state:
“Since, with so many scientists, stupidity cannot be the cause, it has to be villainy!”
