According to Governor Newsom, “we no longer need to drill things or extract things to advance our economic goals”.
Gavin Newsom signs order banning sales of gas-powered cars in California by 2035
BY LARA KORTE SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 10:32 AM
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday issued an executive order requiring the sale of all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035, a move the governor says would achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and move the state further away from relying on climate change-causing fossil fuels.
“This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change,” Newsom said. “For too many decades, we have allowed cars to pollute the air that our children and families breathe. You deserve to have a car that doesn’t give your kids asthma. Our cars shouldn’t make wildfires worse – and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldn’t melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines.”
His announcement comes on the heels of one of the most disastrous climate events in California’s history. The state is still battling wildfires, which have burned a record 3.6 million acres.
Newsom for weeks has cited climate change as a major contributing factor, and has called on federal officials, including President Donald Trump, to take more aggressive action on clean energy.

The following is a tweet from Governor Newsom. The announcement starts at 4:45.
Newsom hopes everyone will follow California’s lead, but why would anyone else want to copy California’s slow moving energy disaster? The more engineering literate amongst us might have noticed that, thanks to renewables, California can barely keep their lights on. More unreliable renewables will just make this situation worse.
Adding millions of energy hungry electric vehicles, many of whose owners would want to charge at night, would be unlikely to improve California’s unstable renewable energy grid.
Governor Newsom in his interview said “we no longer need to drill things or extract things to advance our economic goals” (see the Twitter video above).
Every study I have seen about renewables suggests that any serious attempt to go 100% renewable would require far more drilling and extracting than a fossil fuel powered economy, like a 2700% increase in lithium extraction. Even carbon intensive cement production would have to increase substantially – all those wind turbines and solar panels need cement bases.
Manufacturing cement largely consists of heating limestone or other Calcium Carbonates to 825C (1517F) degrees, to separate the limestone into Calcium Oxide and CO2. There is a lot of CO2 in limestone. Current cement manufacture accounts for 8% of global annual CO2 emissions. Cement does not last forever. A substantial permanent increase in global cement production would pretty much cancel any CO2 savings from going renewable.
Between clearing wilderness areas for wind turbines and solar arrays, and turning what is left of the state into a vast open pit mine to feed the mineral hungry renewables industry, going renewable would devastate California’s environment.
I guess there would be one small silver lining to the Newsom push to turn the State of California into a Renewable Energy extractive wasteland. The few scraps of forest and wilderness which would survive the push for renewables would no longer pose much of a forest fire hazard.
Of course it is possible Governor Newsom is aware of all this (h/t Charles the Moderator).
All the doomsayers predict cathrosphe and impose their rulings, we know what is good for you, way in the future when they will not be around to accept the consequences of their actions and will never be held responsible for the disasters they have inflicted on us
Predict catastrophe, impose rulings, wait for them to screw things up, then say “It’s worse than we thought, we need to do more!”
The governor may regret this grandstanding. I forsee that the great American public will have none of it and remove him from office at the first opportunity. Being unemployed and obviously unemployable the only option left to him will be that of a used car salesman.
Newsom does not care. He is part of the 4 families who have run the state of California for the past one and one half centuries. He has enough inherited wealth that he never needed to work for a living.
Alternative reality plan B is to buy a generator so when the lights start going out – never mind having power to charge clown cars for the wealthy stupid – requires that petrol is still available to buy . In the U.K. the green lunacy is so extreme I doubt petrol stations will be allowed to exist .
Can any kind person please point me in the direction of a guide to home grown fuel crops and small scale fuel production so it will still be possible to keep paraffin type heaters going in winter?
I’m not willing to take the word of those dumb enough to lead us into this green new world that it won’t be necessary to do this, especially looking at their track record so far.
Programmed Future is incompatible with Democracy. What these people in this generation are doing is making obligations for like 2035, 2050 etc. – they try to deprive the future democratic majority (in 2035, 2050 etc.) of the ability to make decisions, via some kind of legacy obligations inherited from previous generations.
They do this by making now detailed programs of what should happen in the future, that the new majorities of the future would need to follow, rather than deciding on their own.
He can only ban sales of (probably new) gas powered cars. But where are the 2035 gas powered cars he wants to ban? No automaker will be producing gas powered cars in 2035. GM won’t be building anything but electric cars after 2025. I doubt that Newsome ever knows what he’s talking about. He is an incredibly ignorant person. In other words, your typical California official.
No automaker will be producing gas powered cars in 2035.
That remains to be seen. If the buying public ain’t buying into the EVs, the car makers that continue to sell gas powered cars will thrive while those who insist on only selling EVs will become nothing more than small niche producers (If they even remain a viable business), even if they are formerly “big” names like GM.
EVs are currently a small percentage of the entire new car buying market in the US (2% of the market). And EV sales were down in 2019 compared to 2018 (Coincidentally, or not, the tax credit for several makes/models of EVs had either begun their phase our or had already completed their phase out). According to an estimate by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, only 35% of new car sales will be EVs in 2040 (and that 35% figure includes gas-using plug-in hybrids).
Either the Market will decide the winner based on what people want (in which case nothing but EVs by 2035 simply won’t happen, the Market, at least here in the US, has not, is not, and likely will not embrace EVs unless and until they can fairly complete with ICE vehicles on price, range, carrying capacity, etc. EVs are still a good ways away from being able to do so, and it’s unclear that they can ever get there barring some major breakthrough). or government will decide what people are allowed (in which case, democracy is dead).
If GM is going to go with only electrics in less than 5 years, then they should have started re-tooling all of their manufacturing facilities by now.
Like your belief that molten salt reactors are just around the corner, this one also doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.
Col, just how much do you have invested in Molten Salt Reactors?
Does the Governor have the authority to require zero emission cars by Executive Order? Shouldn’t it require Legislative action?
“we no longer need to drill things or extract things to advance our economic goals”
Eh?
Here’s the thing about “things”. They don’t generally just appear on the surface. Even water, our most basic necessary “thing” is often drilled for. And lots of “things” necessary for building the things Climate Liars want like wind and solar plants have to be mined.
Newsom needs to get a clue, which is a “thing”. He might have to drill or extract it though.
Gov Newsome should have consulted with Musk before making such a grand proclamation: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4376046-tesla-musk-opens-up-challenges-ahead
Every state should ban battery waste imports from California. All battery production waste created to meet the California battery demand should be disposed of in California.
I’m surprised no one has brought up Wickard v. Filburn. That SCOTUS decision basically says that almost everything you can buy is considered interstate commerce. No state can ban anything considered to be interstate commerce, only the federal government can do that. This executive order won’t stand unless the federal government bans ICE vehicles and that isn’t likely to happen.
This is just one more indication that Democrats, including Democrat governors, can act as dictators and tell us all how we must live – no individual choice allowed. This act by Newsome is very similar to King George’s Tax Act, one of the driving forces behind the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Will we have enough courage in the future to act as those patriots did?
First: when did California (and many states) become a dictatorship? Was legislation passed?
Second: what’s with the Harry Potter style of governance? It’s as though dictates need no basis in reality. If it is declared so then it must be.
Bet dollars to donuts that if somebody investigates
who supported the people who wrote and/or pushed for
this bill, they’d find that they have a financial interest
in green tech.
“We no longer need to drill things or extract things to advance our economic goals”
Really? so where is the lithium for the batteries of all of these electric cars going to come from? (not to mention the metal, plastic, rubber, and other parts of the vehicles that all come from “drilled or extracted” things)
California can’t supply enough electricity for current electricity demand (see: Rolling blackouts) how are they going to supply it with the greatly increased demand that having a population of all-electric cars? Particularly since they refuse to build more reliable (IE fossil fuel and nuclear) power generation and instead insist on depending on unreliables (IE wind & solar)
Musk’s new mine in Nevada?
‘On the topic of lithium, Elon Musk said that there was enough lithium in Nevada alone to electrify the entire US.’

While Nevada may have lithium in the ground, good luck getting the envirowacos to let you dig it up
LEAVE IT IN THE GROUND
It’ll be needed for all the psychosis that CC hysteria will cause
‘On the topic of lithium, Elon Musk said that there was enough lithium in Nevada alone to electrify the entire US…Cornwall mining boom: UK set for SURGE in mining after ‘significant’ lithium discovery.’
And how will it get out of the ground and into the products needed to “electrify the entire US” without “drill things or extract things”? Not to mention the fossil fuels needs to power the “drill things or extract things” as well as for the manufacture of the things that do the “drill things or extract things”.
Hint: Mining requires “drill things or extract things” and it also uses a lot of fossil fuels in the “drill things or extract things” process.
I wonder where he thinks an EV battery comes from? just handed down fom the clouds by fairies? we no longer have to extract things? seriously? is he that stupid?
He’s a far leftist, so the answer to your question is: Yep, he is that stupid.
Yarpos, I am guessing the answer to your question is, yes he is.
Sadly we must also call into question the background sanity of those who live in California. Remember it is the residents of California, that keep voting these ignoramuses into office. What does it tell us about them?
California passed a law that takes effect so far in the future that people will forget who to blame for it’s unintended consequences. That’s political courage, that’s what that is.
I believe it was an Executive Order. That means that a former governor will be telling you what you can and cannot do.
The Democrats have been proclaiming that it is unconstitutional for Trump to cancel any of Obama’s executive orders.
Make the big flourish announcement and handball the fine details-

Doesn’t say what will happen if you move to California and bring your new ICE with you or can you truck in a demo/used one from interstate and get it registered. If you ban the latter for existing residents but not the former you’ll get a lot of temporary residents from interstate with one or more ICE cars they’re really arbitraging so you have to set up rules around that.
As fast as you make the rules to control quantity in the marketplace the arbitragers will find ways to grab the higher price that ensues. There’s no smooth transitioning to be had here with an abrupt ban that will see massive sales of new ICEs and hoarding of them in the leadup to it. The alternative is to regularly jack up the price of ICEs in a staged manner to meet the higher price of EVs but that requires unpopular regular tax hikes which Newson clearly lacks the conviction to implement. Leave it to the next lot to sort out but they’ll find the definitive deadline too hard for the obvious.

He is either as thick as 10 planks or he is an arch conspirator.
Either way, cluey or clueless he is dangerous.
He wants us all living in a village riding horses.
I bet his horse will be white.
Return to the feudal society.
What an a$$…e
I guess he will be voted out.
It would be truly frightening if a governor is able to unilaterally make such a change in the economy via executive order. He should at least put it through the rubber stamp legislature in Sacramento.
Or has California adopted Gubernatorial Dictatorship without telling us?
So the flow of stolen vehicles will reverse from Tijuana back to California instead of the other direction. We can make a good deal for you gringo.
We’ve had solar panel on our roof for 3 years and its a good thing I don’t drive an EV. Thanks to Newsom’s Forest Mismanagement, huge fires have caused us to have numerous days of zero or near-zero solar production. The smoke was so thick it blocked the sun for days. I used my gas powered vehicles to get around but, it has cost us lost power earnings/savings, clogged A/C filters, and I’ve had to go up on the roof to clean the solar panels a couple times because they were covered in ash. Thanks Gavin
For years people have been telling me ‘they’ll never do THAT’ – on a whole host issues – and I keep telling them – they’ll do it the second they can.
there is no oil left to extract ITS ALL IN HIS HAIR !!!
Typical politician making claims for the future that can’t be met but sound good to some people today.
Waiting for the Governor’s executive order that will state California is to receive $10 trillion cash by the year 2035.
