Do Not Feed The Climate Trolls

From ScienceAlert

Science Alert is upset

Over the past two weeks, something unprecedented has happened on ScienceAlert’s Facebook page. And we need to talk about it.

As members of the Covering Climate Now initiative, we recently strengthened our coverage of climate change. We also proudly supported the Global Climate Strike on 20 September 2019, a day that saw over four million people staging protests around the world, demanding climate action as signs of environmental breakdown rapidly encompass our little blue marble.

OMG!  We are all Russian Bots!

Our readers have expressed surprise at just how many climate change deniers appear to be following us. Lately, every time we post a climate news article on Facebook, with astonishing speed and ferocity the comment section becomes a hot-pot of climate denialism.

Posts will receive hundreds of comments in a short amount of time, often in wild disproportion to the actual reach of the post, or the readership of the article itself. Those metrics are a clear sign the engagement is not organic, but is coming from a targeted source.

They lurk in those dark corners…other there!  And they’re funded! yeah that’s the ticket…funded!

We don’t know where these climate trolls roost. Maybe they come from self-organizing grassroots groups with secret Facebook pages. Perhaps the fact they all use the same language and the same memes is indicative of receiving talking points and funding from the fossil fuel industry. Perhaps.

What matters is that ScienceAlert’s Facebook page is being targeted, and we are taking action.

Please Stepford children, follow these instructions.

How you engage in our comment section on Facebook is crucial. When you see one of our posts about climate news, there will inevitably be climate troll comments underneath it. They will post inflammatory, false statements. Offensive memes. They are trying to upset you.

Do not let them. When you see a climate troll comment, please respond by simply tagging ScienceAlert, so our moderators can deal with it as soon as they’re able.

We can’t stress that enough: do not engage.

Frickin’ sad.

Worse than sad Russ. They are behaving Gestapo like: “If you hear something report something” and we will take care of the offensive party(s).

As people who believe in the Constitution and stand to defend the 1st Amendment we are witnessing first level socialist tactics from the Propaganda Ministry shutting down opposing thought. It is happening today with You Tube and Google and this article is pointing out that if you stray from the party line you will be reported and you thoughts will be erased.

Nest step they will find you and disappear you. We are seriously close to a civil war which is why, in addition to their full court press on opposing ideas, they are mainstreaming the idea in the leftist community, that it is time to start confiscation guns. Beware a Democrat Party that once again Controls the White House and Both house of Congress. The will make their move and stop any pretense of masking their intent.

Can’t argue with what you said.

I rue the day Google bought YouTube (and ditto for eBay buying PayPal). YouTube and PayPal and other such sites were originally there to provide a forum and path for alternative action that was free of the restrictions of the big boys. Too bad that didn’t last long enough. The lure of easy money, I guess…

The First Amendent states:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

The first word of this amendment is “Congress”. You Tube, Google, etc. is not Congress, which frees them to shut down opposing thought as they see fit.

Don’t want to get too far into the whole carrier vs publisher thing, but YouTube and Google _can’t_ properly just do whatever they want (“as they see fit”); at least they shouldn’t be able to. Congress granted them immunity then left a huge loophole to allow them to get rid of unfavorable views on a whim. They should not be allowed to have their cake and eat it, too. Either be an open platform/carrier a la phone carriers or be a publisher. They should have to choose. If they want to be publishers, they can ban, limit, etc. all they want. If open platforms/carriers with government-granted special immunities, then they cannot.

TOS are contracts. With contracts come TWO-way obligations. Media companies are violating their own contracts with users and should be held accountable.

Enough with the special favors from government.

They won’t choose “Publisher” publisher leaves them liable to defamation actions and to responsibility for anything criminal…. But being a “common carrier” should mean they can’t proactively censor the content.

Milton Friedman sometimes asked his students “Did any of you vote today?”

The answer usually went something like “No, there is no election being held today.”

Then he would ask them “Did any of you buy anything today?”

The message here is if you do not like what YouTube or Google is doing then don’t vote for them by giving them your business.

Well, I don’t do Facebook and I don’t do Twitter. Google? I could do Microsoft Edge. Not much difference. But at least Google has “apps” that will wipe out cookies etc. Edge doesn’t that I have seen.

One unexpected good thing. A favorite old game (Pacific General) that I could play on Windows XP wouldn’t run on Windows 7 Pro. But, after turning on the Windows 10 feature “DirectPlay”, it works again!
(Glad I copied the whole game to an external drive years ago.)

There is something called Tron;

NAME: Tron, an automated cleaner/scanner/disinfection tool
AUTHOR: vocatus on reddit.com/r/TronScript ( vocatus.gate gmail )
BACKGROUND: Why the name? Tron “Fights for the User”

For cleaning up the sheer volume of bloatware and analytics etc that comes with a Windows 10 installation.

**WARNING: Use at your own risk. If you do use it, follow the instructions.txt file once you unpack it!**

I have run it on my own personal system and it did disable a few things like Windows Spolight on the lock screen but otherwise it worked fine.

I never use Edge. In all my customer SOE builds I remove all links to it from desktop and start menus and install Google Chrome as the default browser (As requested by the customer).

Skype can be uninstalled. Search for Skype in the search bar, right mouse click on the app and uninstall. But yes, I hate all the stuff that is enabled by default such as app access to devices like microphone and camera. Too much snooping!

That’s fine and true and all, but…what does that have to do with my post re: government-granted immunities, contracts, etc.? Not giving someone one’s business is a different issue than ensuring that a company adheres to its contract. Your example seems irrelevant to the point I was making, implying that the problems caused by non-market government intervention in this area can be solved by simple market forces.

Government needs to butt out except to do one of the few tasks it legitimately has: to enforce contracts.

Russ, sometimes things drift a bit. No intent to “hijack”.
“Paper” is essential for “Freedom of the Press”.
Back in the 1780’s the Government would have been right to break a monopoly on the supply of paper. Particularly if it only sold paper to the newspapers the monopoly liked. Backdoor censorship.
Today’s “paper” is digital.
The digital realm needs to remain free and open.

Reply to  Marv

That “first word”, Congress also applies to a HS coach inviting players to a pre-game prayer.
It also applies to a Christian “Mom & Pop” bakery directing a lesbian couple to another bakery to make their wedding cake.

The first thing “Government” is prohibited from doing is prohibiting religious beliefs OR establishing and enforcing politically “approved” beliefs.

“Freedom of the Press”. Yes, ideas should be freely exchanged. But back in that day they didn’t imagine that a few would control who could get the “paper” those ideas would be printed on.
Much like they didn’t envision the idea of a two party system. They fixed that themselves. Elections for “President and Vice President” would be based on a “ticket” rather than 1st and 2nd. (Can you image GW Bush as President with Gore his vise President? How about Trump and Hillary?)
The internet is today’s “paper” when it comes to “Freedom of the Press”.
Is a monopoly of today’s “paper” in keeping with the intent of the 1st Amendment? The free exchange of ideas?

I suspect there’s some truth to this. Russians could use bots to attack the settled science, they have all that experience using globalist stooges to settle the science in the first place. It has all the signs of Russian intrigue. I’ve heard an old russian joke about a farmer who finds a lamp, rubs, genie appears in great flourish ready to grant a wish. Russian farmer goes on and on about how he has no cow, while his neighbor has a cow that provides so many great things. After some time the genie interrupts: “I see I see, your wish is that I grant you a cow?” “No, no” says the Russian, “I want you to kill my neighbor’s cow!” In sum, I wouldn’t be surprised if this SA site was attracting bots if it sows discord in the west. Does NOT mean SA has a clue otherwise.

Whatever you do , do not discuss any climate issue with a “climate denier”. This will not be good for you. You may expose yourself to logical arguments and facts which you are not able to deal with. You may even find yourself questioning your own faith.

I think what has happened is that the political left has ‘jumped the shark’ with its rhetoric using the fear of climate change as the lever to destroy capitalism. More and more people, even among Democrats, are seeing through the rhetoric and aren’t going to sit back and allow the developed world to self destruct based on nothing more than a hunch and a hope.

They want to change the rules that control voting so that they can be sure that they never lose again.

Indeed. One of the big turning points for me was hearing some of the solutions to climate change were to send huge amounts of money to Third World nations for “Climate Justice”. If you are a group of scientists truly believing you face an imminent, world-ending crisis, you take that money and spend it on research for a solution – you don’t give it to the poor to atone for your sins.

Reply to  JS
September 29, 2019 9:20 pm

JS, don’t worry about that. The money never gets to the poor people, it is siphoned off by their corrupt leaders. Hence the saying “The United Nations is an organization established to transfer wealth from the poor people in rich nations to the rich people in poor nations.” And the UN takes a large commission on every transaction.

Um…letting lots and lots of children out of school and transporting them to protest venues at taxpayer’s expense is not a mass movement. It is mass indoctrination at taxpayer’s expense.

Almost every doomsday proclamation made during these field indoctrination exercises was a lie…easily refuted by peer reviewed studies (since you all say you find that sort of thing convincing.)

I’m not in favor of taking children out into public and placing them into mass gatherings and then provably lying to them to scare them to death…or something. In fact, that sort of thing sounds legally actionable. I believe it is sometimes referred to as child abuse.

4.1 x 10^6 / 7.5 x 10^9 = 0.55 x 10^-3 = 0.00055
0.00055 x 100 = 0.055%

It is ridiculous. The real problem is not ‘trolls’

The real problem is the cult of CAGW cannot win a simple discussion using logic reason and observations in a forum.

In reply to:

“We can’t stress that enough: do not engage.”

CAGW is a silly dead theory.

There are a dozen observations and analysis in peer reviewed papers that support the assertion that there is no CAGW.

Perhaps the unapproved commentors should be subject to house arrest or burned at the stake.

Maybe it’s because more and more people are fed-up to the back teeth with their CAGW malarkey, and are calling them out for it…

Maybe they are trolling themselves. They then delete all others like the fake troll.
