Aaron Doering Hennepin County Jail
A well-known climate change expert and professor at the University of Minnesota choked and brutally assaulted his fiancée, who told cops she fears he will kill her, according to a criminal complaint.
Aaron Herbert Doering, a 47-year-old tenured professor and the director of the Minneapolis university’s Learning Technologies Media Lab, was charged Thursday with two felony counts of domestic assault by strangulation in Hennepin County District Court, the Star Tribune reports.
Doering — who also serves as a fellow for the Royal Canadian Geographic Society and regularly appears on media outlets to discuss climate change, sustainability and related topics — had to be separated from his fiancée by responding officers when they got to the couple’s apartment in Minneapolis, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the newspaper.
The woman, who had bruises on her neck and red marks on her forehead, told police Doering had dragged her through the apartment by her hair before beating her and choking her to the point that she thought she would lose consciousness, the complaint shows.
“Victim believes [Doering] will kill her if he returns to the apartment,” according to the court document.
The woman claimed that the alleged assault was not the first time she had been victimized by Doering. She also provided police with photographs to back up those claims.
Doering, who remains jailed in Hennepin County on $40,000 bond, is set to make his initial court appearance Friday afternoon, county records show.
Doering’s status at the university remained unchanged as of late Thursday, a spokeswoman told the Star Tribune.
“We’re aware of the situation and will be reviewing the matter,” director of public relations Lacey Nygard said.
HT/ChrisW, Eric H, Quinn, Bruce Wilkins, Boulder Skeptic, and a few others.
The university has put him out there as someone who has experienced climate change and was promoting his online program as being directly tied to sustainable living with regard to human caused climate change.

A quick search will reveal many interviews related to his involvement with unapologetic reference to his supposed expertise. I would bet the farm that he has received grant money from entities wishing to promote AGW topics.
Come on folks. Do a search. Dozens of interviews, major mainstream media exposure, his own university pages, likely AGW grants to produce AGW educational materials, the list goes on describing this man as an expert in AGW topics. However, like others we have read about here, their off-the-clock behavior is polar opposite to their daytime lipstick on a pig concern for Earth and its inhabitants.
It is news worthy and speaks to the underbelly of this movement.
You seem to speak of a way of life that says none of us can view another with discernment, or measure levels of bad behavior on a scale, or to question that one’s behavior in one area of life has no bearing on another area of a person’s life.
If the accused were one of us, the alarmists and even the mainstream media would certainly make hay out of the story. So it’s sheer self-defense if we do it unto them.
Besides, I’m surprised he hasn’t already said that climate change made him do it.
Rotten apples do indeed speak to the rest of an idea. No matter how good the idea is. The very idea of a person who publicly says one should walk carefully on the Earth yet behind closed doors would trample on another person he disagrees with should give you pause and at least leads you to grow a bit more cautious about the ideas this person has publicly pushed. It does not give you pause? If this does not, what in the hell would?
“It’s a desperate attempt to denigrate the AGW movement by digging up dirt on one of thousands of researches involved in studying it”
Of course, it is absurd to say that misbehaviour by one researcher undermines AGW. But it is even more absurd when there is no evidence that he was one of the researchers studying it. His thing is adventure education.
Again with the no evidence! Granted, his approach to studying it is more like “looking”, but nonetheless he is a recipient of grants with an AGW focus and that likely stipulates that focus to get the grant.
Just give it up. This guy makes a bad apple taste good! And has smeared the church of AGW. Covering for him doesn’t look good on you either.
“And has smeared the church of AGW.”
Because he once got a NSF grant that mentioned climate? But in fact his job is as professor of education and technology. Education and technology should hang their heads in shame!
Maybe they should! As it relates to providing educational curriculum on climate change to K-12 maybe so. A collective condemnation from colleagues, if the alleged acts are true, would be appropriate and appreciated I imagine.
You will have to wait a while there Pamela. Last time I checked, we adhere to the principle that someone charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Seems you’ve already convicted and sentenced this guy. I’d hold off on judgement until after the trial .

Pamela Gray
“It is news worthy and speaks to the underbelly of this movement.”
What complete nonsense. This is no more a story about climate science than one was about Cardinal Pell being a Paedophile. It is stooping to a level that no decent human being would go to. There are good and bad people on both sides, but let their talking about the science be judged, not what they do outside that.
Good grief! Who raised you? What you said is just about the worst thing that a person can say about how to live your life with integrity! If your parents were proud of you before today, I wonder what they think now. If they are ok with your philosophy, no wonder you would say such a horrible piece of advice. If they would question you, good for them!!!!
Pamela,
“Good grief! Who raised you? What you said is just about the worst thing that a person can say about how to live your life with integrity! ”
Really? I’m curious. Please explain to me why you think it is ok to deride an entire field of science because of the actions of one man in his private life. A man who has almost nothing to do with the science as he specialised in another area. Now I would say that is a “good grief.”
Then I guess I adhere to a different standard about my private life being a reflection of my professional life and visa versa. Was raised by such a standard and I expect the people I do business with or are instructing me to have it as well. Clearly this Aaron guy does not so I equally doubt his professional life. And that is real life. His University will likely feel the same. That anyone would give this a pass astounds me.
Pamela
Im not saying he’s a good bloke, Im saying it’s ludicrous to say his violence towards his wife has anything to do with his views on climate. It’s also a very dishonest and low game to play to draw any conclusion about others who have the same views as him on climate. In fact it’s nothing more than a dirty distraction.
Tell me Pamela, would you vote for and/or support a man who committed adultery with a porn star shortly after his wife gave birth to their son? If we follow your reasoning, then the entire US Republican party should be held to account for the morally repugnant behaviors of it’s current leader. Nothing the current GOP does or stands for should be accepted because their leader can’t control his impulses.
First of all, evidence is strong here. I and you can see that. In Trump’s case there is no blue dress with a stain that has DNA still in it. May I assume you supported Bill?
We can play this game till the cows come home but this is about a man who desires to teach teachers and students k-12. Don’t want that kind of man providing any such instruction on how to save the planet while he leaves bruises on someone’s neck. Your argument re: Trump, stinks of a decided bent towards deflection. Not to mention that leaving sperm behind with a willing partner (solid evidence for Bill, but he said-she said wayyyy after the alleged motel romp for Trump) bears no resemblance to the alleged beating this man rained down on this woman. That you must be informed of that difference ends this conversation.
Pamela, I have no argument with you regarding the particular man in question here. You cannot however say: ” and speaks to the underbelly of this movement.” It does not. You are in error here. I have provided analogous arguments to show you your error, but you refuse to acknowledge them and call it deflection. It is not.
…
The movement and this individual are two distinct and separate things, and just because the individual is a member of the movement does not make him a representative of the typical member of said movement.
..
Here is your logic (to show how faulty it is)…..
..
This man is a murderer.
The murderer is a bad person.
The murderer is a human being.
Therefore human beings are bad people.
…
Please re-read Simon’s posts, you could learn from them.
Aren’t they all deranged?
Wealth distribution expert.
This guy is beginning to look more and more like an opportunist who has figured out a way to fund, via abundant climate change coin, a lavish adventure off-the-beaten-path lifestyle under the guise of educating the kiddies. It seems apparent that indeed the playing field has been leveled in order to continue the popularization of belief in AGW.
Climate change coin is available. Get it while it lasts. All applicants from any background accepted. Become a climate expert and reap the benefits!
This wacko is following in the footsteps of the Earth Day co-founder.
“Ira Einhorn was on stage hosting the first Earth Day event at the Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on April 22, 1970. Seven years later, police raided his closet and found the “composted” body of his ex-girlfriend inside a trunk.”

Another piece of violence from the Left – What’s New?
Being a ‘Climate Change’ expert, Aaron Herbert Doering’s finacee was not his first or only victim. In his defence, his beliefs forced him to do something about all that CO2 that she was breathing out.
When I read a description of a discipline like this, first I try to translate it into pre postmodern actual work that he gets paid for (sometimes it isnt nuch that they really do). So he is a teachers training college instructor specializing in use of video lectures. His description with wifty poofty techie claptrap, is a pathetic attempt to avoid putting school teachers’ school teacher in there.
“Climate Change Expert”? I thought the clime syndicate pooh poohed mere engineers, physicists, chemists … who criticise their arithmetic as not being climate scientists and here he is an ‘expert’.
Although mentally screwed up guys who assault women violently with or without rape can be found in all walks of life, I and others have commented that there is an element of at least neurosis to be found in many supporters of big causes.
A ‘tell’ is the anatomy of the set up. There is a scary proportion of unhappy, unfulfilled, dejected, depressed folk out there that get attracted (recruited) to causes with characteristics that give their lives meaning. A cause that feeds zealotry, misanthropy, vengefulness, feeling of control. A set up that fêtes them, mingles them with celebrities, rewards them… oh the founders are past masters at harnessing this stuff. Imagine such folk having their Kumbaya fall apart! The stress is already built up unmercifully for they see the end. It won’t be pretty.
.. yeah … three years ago we really should have overlooked Ragendra Pachauri’s sex scandal and just focused on all the ‘scientific’ work he did as chairman of the UN’s panel on climate change…
Maybe he’s just another man.
Interesting fellow….
It appears that a certain degree of fanaticism is working its way into the climate change morass, resulting in such heinous things as committing suicide by self-immolation in New York City’s Central Park, in full view of children – remember that one? – and beating significant others, more than once, too.
Yes, really peaceful people, aren’t they?
It would be interesting to see a study by qualified people not just on fanatic statements but those who are driven to fanatic actions and correlated with people of both stripes. Good thesis for an ambitious psych major.
The relevance trolls are out in force for this one.
OMG! They let the bastard out on $5000 bail and the University has been accused of knowing about his violent tendencies! His previous wife divorced him because of it and has even started a recovery program for other victims of domestic abuse.

In this day and age of lipstick on a pig media brushstrokes, discernment is of high value to the consuming public. If there is a probability of a person engaging in serious, harmful, inappropriate behavior in one area of life, I will view with proper caution all the other areas of that person’s life.
On the other hand if someone has a dog in the fight and accuses another without physical evidence of wrong doing, it is the accuser I will view with caution.
So I will continue to view this man and what he says about anything with due diligent caution. Which is what I have said all along about what he has said and done in his public life.
Wisdom is a virtue apparently lost on some commentators. Maybe they ain’t old enough to have much of it. Or maybe they have rose colored glasses on. Or maybe they think a little evil or a lot of evil is good as long as they believe overall that good is being done. And maybe they need to go back in time and learn what malevolent benevolence is. Appearing to do good but with alterier motives. People, and movements, and leaders who live one way in public but another way in private should be viewed with such caution lest you be caught unaware.
Pamela, you can pontificate all you want, you were still wrong to say: ” and speaks to the underbelly of this movement.”
Unfortunately, I will likely be proven right. Maybe not in my lifetime, but eventually. The light won’t go on for quite some time. And that is the unfortunate part. We will have to suffer many more “bright stars” feeding at the trough of climate alarm money, and be willing to accept a little or a lot of evil because we are convinced that good is being done. And it appears this guy gorged at the trough unworried about his private life because he was engaged in a greater good. That is the underbelly.
Pamela says: ” feeding at the trough of climate alarm money”
..
I challenge you to find one AGW grant he received. They do not study climate at his place of employment: http://lt.umn.edu/about.html
Lordy. Even Nick found “one”. There are tons of coinage available to study the supposed effects of AGW. His bigger one was a multi-year bunch of money that had him jetting all over the place to “observe, study, and document climate change” under the guise of creating distance learning for kiddies.
Hell, even I could get one.
Two from national science foundation. Both focused on climate change as a consequence of human activity. Multi year and expensive!
Then why does he bill himself as a Climate Scientist? Or maybe I should ask, who billed him as a Climate Scientist? Pamela Gray found the university that employs him does indeed present him as a Climate Scientist. So for Nick Stokes and the rest of you, that’s the “WUWT” of all of this, why is this guy headlined as a Climate Scientist, and was doing interviews as a Climate Scientist, but now that he has been charged with a domestic violence crime you so hastily declare, he ain’t no Climate Scientist? Pamela Gray is right, this does indeed expose (once again) a disturbing trend, a distinct lack of moral fiber, of all the “Climate Science” industry. This isn’t the first time Gang Green has gone gung-ho for a carnival barker as long as he sings the correct tune but then attempted to throw him under the bus once they can no longer cover his warts with concealer.
