While on a whirlwind media tour to promote his new film, former Vice President Al Gore claimed that global warming would create millions of refugees fleeing more intense and frequent extreme weather events.
ThinkProgress editor Joe Romm asked Gore in a Monday interview what humanity needed to do to deal with “the potential for tens of millions of refugees” from global warming.
Gore suggested the number could be higher before giving the following answer:
The Max Planck Institute and others are now saying that some significant regions of the Middle East and North Africa may become uninhabitable because of the rise in both the temperature and humidity. And that will increase the flows of refugees. Africa by mid-century will have more people than either China or India, and by the end of the century more people than India and China combined. And subsistence agriculture is being hit harder than any other vital system in our civilization, because of the timing of the rainfalls, the concentration and timing of the big [extreme weather] events, and the problems of drought. Right now, the U.N. has warned of the worst humanitarian disaster since 1945: 20 million people on the verge of famine. So, we’re going to have to prepare for it, and that means insulating our structures of governance against the kind of disruption that we have seen in some European countries.
The Brexit vote was partly affected by this. The most powerful billboard was one showing endless lines of swarthy-looking refugees on the border of Europe. This is a major, major challenge. Just as the next six or eight months are going to be particularly challenging for American democracy, the next several decades are going to be a test of the character and courage for humanity.
Gore paints a dire picture of humanity’s future without drastic changes to the global economy — namely, a shift away from fossil fuels. However, Gore’s claim is just that: a claim.
A recent study predicted that as many as 2 billion people could become “climate refugees” by the end of the century, due to rising sea levels. Most famously, the United Nations Environment Programme quietly removed a web page claiming that 50 million “climate refugees” would exist by 2010. The UN pushed its prediction to 2020.
Gore spoke with ThinkProgress as part of a media tour to promote his new film, “An Inconvenient Sequel.” It’s the follow-up to his 2006 film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” that has been widely credited with sparking the global warming movement.
While Gore’s first film enjoyed widespread acclaim, it was riddled with failed predictions. The Daily Caller News Foundation reviewed Gore’s 2006 film last year to see how well the predictions fared — they didn’t do well.

This could be avoided by providing Africans with modern methods of farming and living. Because the Greens insist poverty is the way to go, that’s forbidden. It’s interesting that the refugees are COMING TO THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES that use the fossil fuels. They are not fleeing to other Third World areas to share in the utopia of “green living”. Somehow, that evaded Mr. Gore.
The EU has banned the import of GMO crops from Africa (and elsewhere, I assume). If it hadn’t, Africa would be more prosperous.
The irony is the EU does not ban their own companies from selling GM seed to Africa. It’s not good enough for their own population but it’s okay for Africans. Most of the African nations had to move to ban GM themselves so the EU ban is just grandstanding. If the EU really was concerned it should stop the sale and trading in GM seed or products by any of it’s companies. The history of slavery was filled with the same sort of hypocrisy where companies from countries that had banned slavery traded in it in foreign countries.
I’m sorry about the somewhat off-topic post, but since it was featured on Drudge, I had to. http://news.trust.org/item/20170726060325-colqn “Scientists dim sunlight, suck up carbon dioxide to cool planet”
When are people going to realized that atmospheric CO2 is a resource, not a problem. We can feed hundreds of millions with revived ocean pastures by adding a tiny amount of iron to the world’s key fisheries and suck out as much CO2 as we wish, anytime we set our minds to it. Please see Russ George’s experiment off the Canadian west coast. Why would we want to entomb this resource?!
And if such seeding is ineffective or counter-productive in some locations, it can be stopped with hardly any damage caused.
This amounts to medium octane fuel for the blame engine that drives some Africans and their governments in finger pointing at the US and Europe.
Well that is good if they stay in their own Country. It is familiar to them, it puts no burden or less burden on the rest of the world and they can continue to add to their population and rebuild their own country.
Al Gore, the UN, the IPCC, The World Meteorological Organization, the World Bank, our warmist scientific institutions and the activist scientists, our current political establishment, the lunatic judges who ruled that Co2 is a dangerous life treatning gas, just get rid of them. Any politician who believes human kind is responsible for the weather belongs in a Mental Institution. Period.
Sorry my comment makes no sense. It was intended for another article on a different blog with similar context, but with refugees not leaving the country. Given this blog has no edit, or delete capabilities I am stuck cancelling it with this further comment.
Report this again when he doesn’t use the word “Could”
Lots of rain here this morning. I actually saw a turtle climbing a fence post! Damnedest thing!!
So we screw up entire souvereign nations as an integral part of our economic and foreign policy, we starve them by mandatory processing 40% of the maize and wheat crops into bio ethanol, we bomb them, without declaring war, steel their assets and support professional killers to reak havoc. And when the refugees come in we blame it on the bloody weather! Al Gore should persue a career as an Uber Apparatchik in a Totalitarian State with a population that behaves as sheeple with no serious oppostion. Oh…that’s exactly what he’s doing.
Is he, perhaps, the reincarnation of the Heavenly Tumbleweed. Also known as Pigsy, he was a real nuisance.
Refugees or invaders, hmmm, ….. sometimes you can’t tell the difference

Further up the coast where I come from there is a beautiful island called Lošinj.
Few holiday makers there appear to be unperturbed by a menacing alien spaceship hovering above; its colour and general demeanour suggesting it brings invaders and not docile refugees.
/sarc
Would that be the 6-foot tall, beautiful Venerians, the 8-foot tall, beautiful Uranians, the grey Zeta Reticulans, the shape-shifting reptilians from Alpha Draconis, or someone else?
Tell me I don’t need this, but /SARC
Beautiful cloud shot, though!
Hi Grumps
I would think that neither medieval Principality of Zeta or current Zeta plain’s inhabitants or even fish of the Zeta river would kindly take to being called Reticulans whatever they were. Of the rest my ignorance equals the ignorance of whoever produced the list of alien creatures you speak of.
(p.s. some of mine distant ancestors were among those who re-formed the old Zeta principality into a new state now known as Monte Negro).
“An Inconvenient Flop”
The ultimate snake oil salesman. The reality is that the planet is greening, likely because of increased availability of CO2, regardless of the source. And the addition of human sourced CO2 does not explain the extent of greening. During warm periods, CO2 naturally increases and assists in the recovery of Earth from cold stadial periods. If Gore had any understanding at all, he would have said that people from Africa are migrating because they don’t like living in a WET environment. But then politicians don’t have to be bright, they just have to be bought.

The first wave was forced by social justice adventures (e.g. elective wars) for two special interest groups: anti-nativists and businesses.
Canada has been 5-8C cooler this summer than normal. We get 2or3 days normal and they are yelling AGW. Two days ago we had a high of 14C in eastern Ontario, normally 28C. It was warm for about 10days in western Canada near the US border but much cooler the previous months. My wife was in Moscow in June and had to buy a coat., so it looks like the northern hemisphere has been cold this summer. A couple of degrees cooler and we would have another “year without summer” described during the LIA in the 18th century. Activist scientists are becoming more hysterical as fear in them grows – Trump of course, but cold weather to boot.
Drinking water from the tap is cold though, nice.
I’d say the British summer has been a shade warmer than usual so far, but that’s not saying much.
Ripples in the jet-stream for all temperate zones dominate the climate.
Canada us a lot bigger than Toronto Gary 😉 Smoking hot in the west this summer since early June and a definite improvement over last years rainfest summer. Actually not that warm but a few degrees above the long term average however if it doesn’t rain soon parts of Alberta will be in drought condition and the farmers will be hurting.
“Canada has been 5-8C cooler this summer than normal.”
Hmmm, that does not seem like an accurate analysis of Canada.

The majority of respondents here are educated or at least aware. They are not the Gore Target Market – that market comprises those who either are too unaware, too busy or too disinterested in researching the facts. They are the unconscious ‘headline scanners’ and consumers of corporate media ‘news’. And this market is numerically by far the majority – otherwise, why have Gore et al persisted with the ongoing stream of propaganda aimed at them for at least 25 years. And then there are the newbies, too young to know of the years of propaganda that has been drenching the media prior to their birth…
There’s one born every minute, eh Al?
What is your evidence to support this claim?
Look, whenever you have an “Al Gore” bull-crap article, would you please NOT post his picture!
It makes my coffee have a horrible acid after-taste.
I guess great minds think alike. Was typing mine while you were posting yours I suspect.
Re algore:
As Dean Wormer said, “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.” Mod, can’t we dispense with pictures of the idiot in posts about him? Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I agree about the offensive pictures.
The fact that climate scientist do not welcome the idea of any questioning anyone can throw at them says it all about the flakiness of their science. If you have done a good job and know it you welcome the chance to explain WHY you are right to the public even if you think them ignorant and the great unwashed who won’t really understand. You know the willingness to try will at least give the impression of respect for the public and their ability to follow your arguments and some you know will do so and influence their friends who do not.
regions of the Middle East and North Africa may become uninhabitable
May?
They have been for decades and that’s down to a certain faith….
The anthropogenic disasters in the region go back millennia, perhaps even beyond Ramesses all the way to Australopithecus Lucy’s direct relatives.
The Book of Gore has many prophecies.
Fear mongering. Sky is falling. Sky is falling. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.
Poor Al. The public hasn’t listened to him for 25 years and he’s running out of different ways to say the world is ending.
Sounds like he’s there alright
They are not refugees or migrants entering Europe from Africa, The Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, they are slaves. Big businesses require bodies to do the dirty work, to drive down wages, and to consume from the Company Store. If we went and snatched them off the Coast of Africa as we did in the 18th/19th Centuries there would be an outcry but because they have been encouraged by the likes of Soros and Merkel to get half way we snatch them off the Ocean and dump them on Italy and Greece to be distributed to slave markets in the North. The “slaves are not poor in the sense of starving in Africa. They are well clothed, well shod, have cell phones and in most cases have paid modern slave traders for their passage. If they were dirt poor they would be stuck at home. The belief that cheap labour consuming cheap products is equivalent to economic growth is strong in our rich elitist brigades. The fantasy of “refugees” when all they are is slaves is hard to resist.
Gore has so destroyed his own credibility he is now left to forecast events that have already taken place .
What’s next global warming could cause the second world war ?
A new academy award for above average documentary comedy can’t be ruled out .
