Newspaper: U.N. IPCC chair Rajenda Pachauri faces sexual harassment charges – story then disappears from website

From the this sounds familiar department…comes this hot, steamy, but not climatic turn of events, along with the near immediate disappearance of the story down the memory hole.

Via Dr. Roger Pielke Jr. on the front page of India’s The Economic Times comes word of the charges:

TERI director-general RK Pachauri faces harassment charges by 29-year-old female employee

The complainant, who works as a research analyst at the New Delhi-based energy think tank, has cited unwanted physical advances.

Pachauri_sex-harrassmentOddly, the link to the original story at The Economic Times, here…

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/TERI-director-general-RK-Pachauri-faces-harassment-charges-by-29-year-old-female-employee/articleshow/46280147.cms

…seems to have been disappeared, and now displays a “404”. Using web search on The Economic Times still reveals the existence of the story Fortunately, I was able to archive a copy from Google cache, and it is in the PDF below:

TERI director-general RK Pachauri faces harassment charges by 29-year-old female employee – The Economic Times (PDF via Google cache)

Update: The article can still be found here: http://www.pressreader.com/india/economic-times/textview

pachauri-readerwebsite-story(h/t to reader Bart)

So either the editors learned that somehow the story wasn’t true and pulled it, or there has been some legal or political pressure, perhaps from the U.N., to quash the story. It seems the original article didn’t contain any mention of Pacahuri’s U.N. IPCC involvement, only his role in TERI.

Maybe they seriously believed this claim from the article:

Pachauri has denied all the allegations and said he’s been a victim of hacking. “The said email has indicated misuse of my computer resources and communication devices, without my permission or consent,” he said in a response to ET’s queries. “From your email, I have come to know the factum that my computer resources including my email ids, mobile phone and WhatsApp messages have been hacked and that unknown cyber criminals have gone ahead and have unauthorisedly accessed my computer resources and communication devices and further committed various criminal activities.”

UPDATE: From The Economic Times Twitter Feed comes this announcement:

pachauri-ET-story-removal

But, this episode is reminiscent of Pachauri’s steamy potboiler sex novel A Return to Almora:

IPCC now in Bizarroland: Pachauri releases “smutty” romance novel

The book, which makes reference to the Kama Sutra, starts promisingly enough as it tells the story of a climate expert with a lament for the denuded mountain slopes of Nainital, in northern India, where deforestation by the timber mafia and politicians has “endangered the fragile ecosystem”.

But talk of “denuding” is a clue of what is to come.

By page 16, Sanjay is ready for his first liaison with May in a hotel room in Nainital. “She then led him into the bedroom,” writes Dr Pachauri.

“She removed her gown, slipped off her nightie and slid under the quilt on his bed… Sanjay put his arms around her and kissed her, first with quick caresses and then the kisses becoming longer and more passionate.

“May slipped his clothes off one by one, removing her lips from his for no more than a second or two.

“Afterwards she held him close. ‘Sandy, I’ve learned something for the first time today. You are absolutely superb after meditation. Why don’t we make love every time immediately after you have meditated?’.”

A book review about this potboiler had this to say:

Lucky for him, Sanjay never encounters any serious criticism in this book.  No one accuses him of scientific fraud, no one seriously disagrees with his ‘research’, no one takes him to task over the fee structures of his Meditation Huts (or whatever he calls his 400 plus franchised enlightenment outlets).  It seems likely that if controversy ever came Sanjay’s way he would respond badly.  First he’d try lofty, above it all condescension; when that failed to stifle opponents he’d result to angry and unthinking vituperation.  In neither case would he show much talent for detailed, evidence-based argument.  At the end, he would vanish from the scene, looking and sounding hurt, and go off to seek inner peace among the forgiving silence of the Himalayan hills. There, where the Force is strong, he would heal.  The gurus and saddhus would throw themselves at his feet; women would batter down his door; memories of his past incarnations would distract him from unpleasant events; from time to time he would consider ways to help the poor and spread the light.

Speaking of Guru’s The Love Guru has this relevant quote from a hockey team member: “there’s no connection between hockey and my love life”

Guess what? Everyone wants to rule the world, kill all the men, and pollenate all the pretty girls. The next question is how do you govern this. The next question has never been answered.

Ah.
It is answered by the simple reply “Moral behavior by men, not men acting as animals.”
But then again, that is why today’s liberals refuse to allow moral behavior, condemn it when they find it, and are encouraging in every domain immoral and adolescent and animalistic behavior.
Because, in truth, behaving like animals is easier, more fun, and offers faster rewards.

… and happens far less often than the media lets you believe. There is an enormous discrepancy between reality and propaganda. Based on the same lie by Mary Koss many years ago based on “because I say so” reference (1 in 8 women raped) the latest is that we have even more horrific lie of 1 in 3 in Croatian propaganda (because no reference at all), and it catches on. By virtue of Woozle effect soon every women should be raped at least once in her life. So if you are a woman, and you are not raped yet – there must be something wrong with you, right?
Wrong!
The vast majority of men do not do such things, and instead are very protective on women. It boils down to maybe 1% or less that do all such crimes. But pumping the numbers only normalises the lie and makes lives to the 1% of rotten apples much easier. It is very much like diluting the responsibility to everyone so that the real troublemakers may roam free, raping here and there, while everyone else is responsible for actions of the few.
Cry wolf if you may…

It was just on the Huffington Post of India but was pulled unfortunately did not save. Obviously Google is attempting to kill this story urgently. The damage to the AGW would be enormous ie Obama could not meet head of IPCC leader Nobel ect. Me thinks AW should have keep this as top posting.

There’s no chance of this ballooning into another Strauss-Kahn affair, with more women being emboldened to come forward and make complaints against him, since Pachauri’s reputation with regard to how he treats ladies of the opposite sex is quite legendary in climate circles. It really is.

Loved your article. Until now I was capable of nothing but gagging in response to any thought of this slimy greasy character engaging in awkward unwanted advances. You have brought me back to reasoned discourse.

Again, no mention of the IPCC

“Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi did not respond to phone calls. The complaint was lodged on February 13 and was first reported by The Economic Times in its February 18 edition. The story was withdrawn from the website of this paper on Wednesday morning, after the Hon-‘ble Delhi High Court issued an injunction late on Tuesday night after the edition went to press.”

Wow, he even used the Anthony Weiner defense of “someone hacked my phone!” That is a hilarious. Of course maybe he did get hacked…that’s what happens when all your passwords are “redistribute”.

Did Huff Post cover it? Don’t think so. Can they say they did? Yes, with an unlinked special ed.:

Very interesting. These phone and computer apps are apparently getting very good. Now they can evidently grab people in person, hug them, write notes long hand, forcibly kiss … and all while looking like the person in question. Fabulous.
Michael Jankowski, I concur…

Looks like the man who encourages “futzing” of data and models got caught in the act!
BTW, Dr. “P” was supposed to address a climate event at Yale University this past week but the event was cancelled because of the large snowfalls in the area.

Instead of “404” the story now reads …
The RK Pachauri story has been removed following an injunction from the honourable Delhi high court.

If the innocent until proved guilty could be applied to CO2 as well , I,d be happy to go along with that .

From a legal perspective, i.e. harassment by an employer, this is the email I’ve seen which is the most damaging.
Email on Nov 14, 2013:
“Dearest meri jaan, you came to me at the loss of your earlier job as a measure of desperation. In the context of your injury, what faith have you shown in me? You have been going to the gym against my explicit advise. Even you must know that even if I don’t marry you, I am yours for life.”
1. I gave you a job and now you won’t f#$% me?
2. Attempting to control her personal life.
Although I’m sure the physical molestation was at least equivalent, just harder to use in court.

Well no wonder they withdrew it, reminds me of the Vivienne Louise Dye saga when she released information that she was bringing charges against two executives for sexual harassment, assault, sexual prejudice, etc. One of the chief executives took one paper to [task] because it was not only untrue but it was pre-judicial. Two nationals admitted they were wrong and offered apologies, but Rupert Murdoch’s lot believed her. They realised their mistake and withdrew and the plaintiff whose career in banking was ruined for the time, was paid heaps. The real trial went on for ages, and she had be found more than wanting and even her mother lied for her and was found out. Then she went too appeal, and another when that was rejected. I knew her and told her this was the paper’s fault. Anyway, after millions of dollars she was proven wrong, had lied, and over 6 million $$s damages awarded against her. So at this stage the paper editor’s were correct in withdrawing the article.
Mud sticks though.

Another update at Donna Laframboise’s blog – http://nofrakkingconsensus.com/2015/02/22/more-women-accuse-pachauri/ excerpt:

Meanwhile, a story in the Calcutta-based Telegraph suggests that Pachauri has long treated female staff members “like little girls” by lifting them off the ground as one might do with toddlers in North America. Based on the above two women’s accounts, plus “interviews with two long-term [TERI] employees,” the article implies that physical contact and sexual innuendo have long been part of Pachauri’s modus operandi.
Vrinda Grover, a New Delhi-based lawyer who specializes in women’s issues, told The Telegraph that others have contacted her with similar tales: “I know of at least three such cases, and the pattern is the same in every case.”

Seems He’s finally waved the little white flag……… He’s resigned………
Don’t know why but it’s a little anti-climactic (forgive the pun) I personally wanted him to resign over the really poorly presented science and the political advocacy rather than this…. but hey ho… I guess I’ll take what I can get

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-31601122 says
The head of the United Nations climate change panel (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri, has stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations.
A spokesman for Mr Pachauri told the IPCC that he had resigned from his position with immediate effect.
Indian police are investigating a complaint from a 29-year-old woman working in Mr Pachauri’s office in Delhi.
Mr Pachauri has denied the allegations.
Lawyers for the woman say the harassment included unwanted emails as well as text and phone messages.
On Monday, the 74-year-old had pulled out of a high-level IPCC meeting in Kenya because of “issues demanding his attention in India”, as an IPCC spokesman put it.
The IPCC has since confirmed that the meeting will instead be chaired by its vice-president Ismail El Gizouli.
Mr Pachauri had chaired the IPCC since 2002. In 2007 he collected the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the organisation for its work in the scientific assessment of the risks and causes of climate change.
