The Maldives can't take a joke

But they can sure act like one:

Maldives Cabinet Signs Climate Change Document 20 Feet Under Sea

From the BBC: Maldives government complains of spoof atlas omission

The government of the Maldives has complained after the London Daily Telegraph website carried a satirical blog post saying the island nation is to be omitted from the Times Atlas of the World.

The supposed omission was said to be due to impending climate change.

The low-lying islands of the Maldives are at risk from rising sea levels.

The spoof blog post was taken seriously by several media outlets in the Maldives.

The Telegraph blog post was written by a climate change sceptic, James Delingpole.

Oh, the hilarity!

Here’s some WUWT posts on the joke that is the Maldives concern over sea level rise:

Tuvalu and many other South Pacific Islands are not sinking, claims they are due to global warming driven sea level rise are opportunistic

Floating Islands

Despite popular opinion and calls to action, the Maldives are not being overrun by sea level rise

Oh and the best indicator yet, the government there is building 11 new airports

11 new airports to be constructed in Maldives

Obviously, they need them to evacuate people from the sea level rise threat /sarc

Follow the money.

I am very impressed with the gang that runs the joint in Maldives.
They have no exports ( goods or service or technology ). They live on tourism.they need more money. so, ask the other 7billion suckers to spend money on their island. Get the gullible groups ( liberals and scientists ) help them create the buzz. Then they will shane the rest of the world into giving them money
Super brilliant. But works only when you have really stupid people running the governments in the reset of the world… sadly, they have hit the jackpot

New airports and golf courses in the Maldives, as they’re preparing to be flooded reminds me of the millions of dollars that is going to be spent on expanding and improving the ski areas in the Sierra around Lake Tahoe.
At the same time we hear repeated claims of snow being a thing of the past in the Sierra, the ski resorts are pouring money in to attract tourists and skiers. Makes you wonder…why would you poor money into a sinking ship…Unless there were massive gov’t guaranteed loans…
Never mind. I just answered my own question.

“We are the best there is” insisted a spokeswoman for the Atlas. “We are confident of the data we have used and of the cartography. Our data shows that (the ice) has reduced by 15 per cent. That’s categorical.”
They couldn’t sneer at blogger’s in pjamas, as arrogant CBS and jerk Dan Rather did over some political accusation proven false, as here many scientists tried to point the atlas to its error.
Shows the value of PR wonks. (Yes, there are some pros, I’ve worked with a few, but most aren’t great and some are babbling idiots, occurrence rate greater in dysfunctional organizations of course. One thing I expect a PR pro to do is ask executives “are you absolutely confident of this? have you triple-checked? because if you are proven wrong you’ll have egg all over your face big time.)
One useful technique, but not automatic, is to get a rough idea of what the magnitude of something might be. One way is what some people call a “back of the envelope calculation”, an approximate calculation. Better is to have something independent, as used in:
http://lists.cryolist.org/pipermail/cryolist-cryolist.org/2011-September/000946.html
IIRC in the Dan Rather case, someone compared the type style in a supposed letter and found it did not match typical typewriters of the era it was supposedly written in, but did match a popular computer font that did not exist them. You might have thought CBS would be smart enough to examine the type style or hire an expert before they put their reputation fully on the line.

James Sexton at 416 asks, “does it matter why?”
Controversial observations would be assisted by a reasonable mechanism, not an obviously fallacious one. Makes the obs just a tad more suspect.
Sharks at 8 something corrects my spelling. Thanks. As for what he takes as an impertinent personal attack, it doesn’t matter so much who’s saying it as what’s being said. If it’s wrong, it’s wrong. If you think it’s right, then why don’t you defend it? I say it’s pure nonsense.
If you want a more plausible explanation for sea fall in the Indian, consider that most the melted mass goes to the Pacific, moving the center of mass of the hydrosphere away from the Indian, drawing it down compared to the Pacific. –AGF

UH HUH and maybe there are other things at play….besides a “melted mass.”
