But they can sure act like one:

From the BBC: Maldives government complains of spoof atlas omission
The government of the Maldives has complained after the London Daily Telegraph website carried a satirical blog post saying the island nation is to be omitted from the Times Atlas of the World.
The supposed omission was said to be due to impending climate change.
The low-lying islands of the Maldives are at risk from rising sea levels.
The spoof blog post was taken seriously by several media outlets in the Maldives.
The Telegraph blog post was written by a climate change sceptic, James Delingpole.
Oh, the hilarity!
Here’s some WUWT posts on the joke that is the Maldives concern over sea level rise:
Despite popular opinion and calls to action, the Maldives are not being overrun by sea level rise
Oh and the best indicator yet, the government there is building 11 new airports
11 new airports to be constructed in Maldives
Obviously, they need them to evacuate people from the sea level rise threat /sarc
Follow the money.
h/t to WUWT reader ANH
Those 11 new airports could cause the island to tip over according to the Ga Congressman
“Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is afraid that the U.S. Territory of Guam is going to “tip over and capsize” due to overpopulation.”
Humorectomy surgery is the cruelest of surgeries, leaving the patient incapable of a good laugh.
Humorectomies are not uncommon amongst AGW true believers and promoters.
The AGW community can stand laughter no more than the naked Emperor strutting his sophistication for all to see.

………….If we enforce strict Environmental regulations, recover MgCl3 and NaCl3 at Straight of Hormosa and Straight of Gibraltar and recover those at closed eddies of Baffin Bay & Green Land Sea we can correct the climate. Sea ice & Ice shelves in Arctic & Antarctic are Natural Air Conditioners of
MOTHER EARTH. When more ice in both Poles, the third Pole, as Scientists described, Himalayas will have abundance of ice and Snow & Bolivia will have more Glaciers & water.
=================================================================
lol, why on earth would we want more ice? And the amount of water we have is fine.
The Maldives can rest easy, as President Obama solved the rising sea level problem: :->
http://www.nationalpost.com/news/NOTA+Bene/5439362/story.html
“Obama – in similar fashion to baseball legend Babe Ruth calling his home run during the fifth inning of Game 3 of the 1932 World Series – called it successfully on sea level rise. Obama declared in a June 8, 2008 speech, that his presidency will be “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.””
The Maldives are not sinking says “Peer reviewed scientific paper, by Dr Morner, showing that Maldives sea levels are not rising:”
Here’s another peer-reviewed paper, same journal, few years later finds Morner’s study ‘implausible’
“the suggestion of such a fall has been examined from meteorological and oceanographic perspectives and found to be implausible. A number of met-ocean data sets and regional climate indices have been examined, at least one of which would have been expected to reflect a large sea level fall, without any supporting evidence being found. In particular, a suggestion that an increase in evaporation could have caused the fall has been demonstrated to be incorrect. Without any real evidence for a hitherto-unrecognised process which could lead to a sea level change as significant as that proposed by the fieldwork team, one concludes that a rise in sea level of approximately half a metre during the 21st century, as suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report, remains the most reliable scenario to employ in future studies of the islands.”

“The Maldives islands are low lying with the highest point at approximately eight feet above sea level. ”
http://www.maldivestourism.net/maldives/
Let’s see 8 feet is 2,438mm, so at 3.2mm rise per year average that comes to about 762 years. With 381 years at the 1/2 way point.
“31,000 p.p.m. of Sodium Chloride are detected in the Arabian Gulf. These are De-icing agents”
oh noes, RAVEENDRAN ! to think that perfectly normal sea water has NaCl at 35000 ppm, too!
Maybe it’s all about the dihydrogen monoxide?
“A Maldives government official told the BBC the Telegraph should not publish such “nonsense” under its brand name when it could be mistaken for news.”
Maybe the government of the Maldives needs to apologise to the rest of the world for their unashamed “nonsense” in peddling of the rising sea levels fraud that was “mistaken for news” and has created serious angst around the world.
Apparently neither can the people in Uganda. This from Tom Nelson: http://tomnelson.blogspot.com/2011/09/healing-planet-in-quest-for-un-global.html – Full article at the NYT.
Nice to know the “Greener than Thou” crowd isn’t above a little bloodshed and home burning to save the planet (and make a lot of money). Always cheers me up when people like this get caught doing really bad things. Shining example of hypocrisy. Blood diamonds anyone?
All the Chinese need to do is have more and more of them just stay there, buy property and build houses, bribing any officials who object.
After they have 100 times the original native population,
the Atlas will be quietly revised to ‘Maldives (Ch)’.
That way if it does sink the Chinese will just build a Wall.
Willis Eschenbach’s “Floating Islands” article, referenced by Anthony above, is IMHO one of his best.

Does it matter why? And, how long does it take to replace the denser water? And, if it gets replaced, will that water then become denser? Will mercury move up hill in following the geoid shape?
As much as I hate to sound like a politician, I do want to point out to the folks on the Maldives that they are learning what it means to be “down on the plantation.” That phrase is from American politics. I am not going to ruin the fun of Maldivians who should Google it. But it has to do with being a group that is a political captive of a particular American political movement.

LOL, yes, why worry about a couple de-icing agents (although I prefer CaCl2) with all that (universal) solvent just splashing around unregulated.
Isn’t the Maldive’s government worried about the Tourism industry.
Who wants to fly to an island that might not be there when the plane arrives. One would have to hope that they are carrying enough fuel to abandon the landing and fly back to India.
“Hi, this is your captain speaking. We have been in a holding pattern for half an hour because we cannot seem to locate the airport or the island. We have double-checked the instruments and it is supposed to be just off the left side but it is not there. We have 5 mins of fuel left before we have to abort the the flight and return to Mumbai. Thank you for your patience and we hope that you have a nice holiday.”
“Even if we have to return to Mumbai, we are still planning to carry through the next leg of the schedule which is a flight to observe the glaciers on East Greenland next week.”

Delingpole is too funny. I think that’s the gist of the protest.
Philip Clarke says:
“…a rise in sea level of approximately half a metre during the 21st century…”
=============
The current government of British Columbia, Canada, has determined that sea level rise for the 21st century will be one metre despite the fact that sea levels have fallen at the rate of 5mm per year for the last 2 years, and somehow taxing B.C. citizens (and tourists) for using a fossil fuel to heat their homes and transport themselves to their jobs, as well as forcing school boards and hospital boards to purchase carbon offsets ($100 million so far), will somehow stop the seas from rising.

Northern Hemisphere’s winter, not Antarctica’s. Whoops, back to the drawing board.
So the Times Atlas copies a map out of Wikipedia, gets slated by Richard Black of the BBC, Dellers takes the mick, The Mash takes the mick out of Dellers, and the Maldives don’t get the joke.
given this AP piece went all over the world, wonder why the Maldives didn’t protest Clinton’s remarks!
20 Sept: Forbes: AP: Meghan Barr: Ex-President Clinton: Green movement needs money
“A few years ago, after the south Asian tsunami, I spent a lot of time in the Maldives,” Clinton said. “I think it’s quite possible that the Maldives won’t be here in 30 or 40 years.”…

Most of us have seen those, posted by people who have names. 🙂
As a rationalista and a scuba diver, I condemn the laughable government that went through this charade; they are not serious. They are looking to be on the receiving end of the the scam.
