WUWT readers will probably remember yesterdays’ story about the malfunctioning temperature sensor at the ASOS station at Honolulu airport next to an asphalt access road. Well guess what? Even though NOAA admits the sensor is in error by as much as 2 degrees, they are going to keep the data and the string of new high temperature records. “BUT” they fixed the recent record rainfall data from the same station. See below. How’s that for science? Fix one broken record due to faulty equipment but leave others?
FROM KITV-TV (hat tip to Becka)
HONOLULU — Honolulu’s run of record heat came to an end Wednesday, but it may not have been any cooler. The weather has been warm most of the month, with highs in the 90s the past nine days. However, between 11 a.m. and noon, the city’s temperature dropped from Wednesday’s high of 89 degrees to 86 degrees, the same hour a new thermometer was installed at Honolulu International Airport.
The old one had been showing a warm bias of a degree or two, officials said. The National Weather Service said that is not significant enough to throw out the data and recent records.
Here is the string of temperature records that have been set from this faulty ASOS station:

Let me say it first: THIS IS JUST WRONG.
If they know the error, how can they possibly justify keeping the new maximum records? You can’t get away with this sort of thing in the world of professional sports records, Olympic records, or even the cheesy Guinness Book of Records. Heck they even fix mistakes made on the TV quiz show Jeopardy and dock the contestant’s winnings!
Surely NOAA has more scruples than a TV game show?
If the record can’t be verified because the equipment is faulty, how does that make it a valid record? They can’t, it’s FUBAR!

UPDATE:
WUWT reader Leon Brozyna points out the temperature dropped 3 degrees at the time of the sensor change, not 2 as indicated in the original TV story admission by NWS PHNL.
I’ve recovered the hourly data from the ASOS station and that is verified. Note there do not seem to be any other meteorological conditions that occurred at that time (such as increased cloud cover or rain) that could add a cooling trend. With solar insolation still increasing, and the high of the day likely yet to occur ( there was a second peak later) it seems that the sensor was off at least 3 degrees. Plus the temperature trend at that time of the day is usually upwards, so it may be even more than 3 degrees. Possibly 4.- Anthony

Well no wonder they get wrong readings; I don’t see any barbecue out there anyway.
It’s nice that they have that anemometer up there high enough so it can collect those wing tip vortices from the landing planes; or better yet from the taking off planes.

Do we have any other instances of “failed on the high side” temp sensors other than Honolulu HI and WEAC1?
Looking back over the record (and please do check it out) for Aug 2007 it seemed to me that the hotter the actual day, the greater the error when compared to nearby stations. That’s what it looked like to me, anyways.
Honolulu is a place where the daytime max doesn’t change all that much, not like the Sacramento Valley where you can get 20 degree swings in a matter of a few days.
Anthony, there’s no need to throw out these records. The temperatures have no doubt been adjusted by those of Darwin, which have been adjusted by the records of Bombay which are homogenised with those of Cairo which in turn are adjusted by the Miami temps which are checked with reference to the LA numbers which have been verified by asking a Bristlecone Pine in California.
So that’s all right then.
There are no active volcanoes on that island. Among the Hawaiian Islands, only the ‘Big Island’ has any active volcanoes.
“A warm bias of a degree or two” How very scientific of them. After all, whats a “degree or two” between friends?
Lets remember, the way Global Average Temperature (whatever that is) is calculated in the GISS and similar algorithms is by way of gridding. That one thermometer in Hawaii could represent a heckuva big chunk of the surface record in the Pacific!
The once respected scientific establishments of the National Weather Service, NOAA and NASA have become nothing more than a clown show.
You’d see more attention to detail at a tea party for baboons.
Farcical…
Tea anyone?
Anthony, you are right about the SNIPS.
It does not serve the discussions.
Only two-three degrees over actual, with the Surface Station Project in mind this could be one of the more accurate stations. 🙂
Am I recalling correctly that during the early part of last winter when a low temperature was recorded at an Illinois based station the response from the requisite agency was that the weather station would need to be checked for accuracy before the recording could be recognised as a low temperature record? With the above account it does seem to be one rule for the lows and another for the highs or am I just being cynical…

Reasons to Distrust Your Government
By Alan Caruba
In the normal course of events, when voters no longer have confidence in the President, their Senators and their Representatives, they vote them out of office, but there are whole agencies of government that continue on no matter who is in office and, since their budgets and existence depend on the politics of whoever holds power, they bend to serve their policies.
A democracy is most in peril when citizens conclude they can no longer trust their government and there is no better example of that than a recent report, “Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States”, issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is sheer rubbish.
It is typical of the deliberate distortions and outright lies that have been put forth to an increasingly doubting public regarding “global warming.” It is part and parcel of the deceptions perpetrated for decades now by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, all of which feature tortured data of dubious quality and, since 1998, have ignored the Earth’s cooling trend.
The increasing reports from around the nation of “freaky” weather, of snow in June, and other anomalies are, in fact, a reflection of this cooling trend and it is likely to last at least thirty years or more.
John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President on Science and Technology, and a man who holds some of the most outlandish and baseless views on climate change, said “This new report integrates the most up-to-date scientific findings into a comprehensive picture of ongoing as well as expected future impacts of heat-trapping pollution on the climate experience of Americans, region by region and sector by sector.”
No it doesn’t. For one thing, the “heat-trapping pollution” to which he obliquely refers is mostly carbon dioxide, a gas vital to all life on Earth and a gas which, in the days when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, could be found in concentrations five times or more higher than today. If CO2 was the great Earth destroyer that Holden, Gore, and others insist, there should be no Earth at all as we know it today.
To call CO2 “pollution” is to immediately invalidate the entire report, but to further insist, as the report does, that it is “primarily human-induced” is not just quite wrong, but a great big LIE. Human activity plays virtually no role whatever in the production of CO2.
This product of the interagency U.S. Global Change Research Program is a 190-page piece of loathsome propaganda that predicts more frequent heat waves, more flooding and waterborne diseases, rising water temperatures, more insect infestations and wildfires, and that old standby, rising sea levels with coastal flooding that will no doubt drown Manhattan and other coastal cities.
Hollywood does a better job with such fantasy than the minions of Washington, D.C.
Meteorologist Joe D’Aleo, the first Director of Meteorology at The Weather Channel and former chairman of the American Meteorological Society’s Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting, said of the NOAA report “This is not a work of science, but an embarrassing episode for the authors and NOAA.”
This report and the hours of effort that went into is pure science fiction, predicting outcomes, as all such “global warming” does (now called “climate change”), fifty to a hundred years from now.
Global warming propagandists always focus on a distant and unknowable far horizon, safe in the knowledge that only a future generation will discover their lies. By then, the horrid “environmental” legislation they wish to impose on America will have destroyed its economy and ruined our lives.
It is no accident this report has arrived just in time for a debate on the “Cap-and-Trade” legislation that is nothing more than a huge TAX on all energy use and one that will increase the cost of all energy to everyone by thousands of dollars individually. It will drive industries dependent on large quantities of energy to foreign nations. It is a huge job-killer.
Duke Energy of North Carolina, based on the spurious science of global warming, has asked the regulators of that State for permission to raise electricity prices 12.6 percent. The requested price hike would cost North Carolina ratepayers $496 million. They should change their name to Enron. It’s not being used any more.
Utilities required to include a mix of solar and wind energy, the least efficient and most impractical producers of energy because of Renewable Energy Mandates will be forced to ask for similar increases. America is the Saudi Arabia of coal. It is the most affordable way of generating energy. More coal-fired and nuclear plants would ensure that rates would remain stable for many decades to come.
Naturally “Crazy Eyes” Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, was quick to weigh in on news of the NOAA report. “The impact of the climate crisis on the United states and around the world is becoming increasingly severe.” Nonsense! More lies from the Speaker.
The climate is always in a state of change and that change is determine primarily by the Sun, as well as other natural factures such as the oceans, volcanic activity, and the greatest meteorological mystery of all, why clouds behave the way clouds do.
The NOAA report has already been torn to shreds by many of the leading meteorologists and climatologists throughout the nation. It is pure scaremongering and it is intended to further an environmental agenda that is determined to deprive Americans of the energy sources we will need to power our way out of this government-induced Recession and meet the needs of an expanding population.
It is yet another Obama-driven “crisis” and Americans have good and grave reasons to reject the massive global warming deception, “Cap-and-Trade”, and all those seeking to drive us like lemmings over the cliff of an insolvent, bankrupt nation.

“593 NEW record low max temps for the month of June –
and we’re only half way through the month
17 Jun 09 – Here we sit, with our fearless leaders in Washington DC trying to shove ever more global warming taxes down our throats while low-temperature records are being broken across the country. Where is the outrage?”
I think it is a legitimate question to ask!
Ok, somebody sneak in and chill down the sensor with some ice. Set a new low record. Then the claim that AWG creates more volatile temperature records can be supported with evidence. [/snark]
Have a look at how the moderators at the British site “the environment site .org “is trying to stifle discussion on this and other subjects raised by Anthony

Man you guys really need to get a life. The temperature at Honolulu isn’t affecting the climate change debate, those records and the models used to develop climate research are totally unrelated.
The temperature sensors are managed by the FAA anyway. This isn’t a new problem either, nor one that NWS Honolulu can do anything about. All the sensors that were part of this lineup read hot, they always have. “Wow! Could that be why all this globa….oh wait.
If you still believe climate change is man-made then go to meteorology school and get an education, then you’ll see that its all a bunch of bunk that weak minded people that operate outside their disciplines or from pseudosciences created. Since people watch too many movies where all kinds of horrible things happen and there is one hero that speaks out from the “evil tyrants” controlling their temperature sensors, everyone thinks its a good idea.
People are starving on Oahu, maybe solve that problem, then if you get that one and all the other problems fixed, we can fix the temperature sensor.
The XO on my first ship once told his junior officers, “The only thing worse than making a bad decision is changing it.” This comment, from an otherwise excellent officer, left everyone scratching his head trying to figure out what it meant…looks like NOAA has a similar leadership philosophy.
As per Anthony’s earlier request, I sent this e-mail to Hawaii. Got back a bunch of “out-of-the-office” replies.
Gentlemen and Ms. Fujiwara:
I have just read on Anthony Watts’ blog WUWT
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/06/17/noaa-fubar-high-tempclimate-records-from-faulty-sensor-to-remain-in-place-at-honolulu/#more-8608
that the temperature sensor at Honolulu has been exhibiting a significant warm bias for some time and has now been replaced, but that the records will not be adjusted to compensate for the bias. If this is in fact correctly reported, I find this course of action absolutely intolerable. Measures are even now being seriously proposed to mitigate the problem of “global warming” , measures that will cost trillions and result in significant reductions in standards of living and personal liberty. Your data is part of the scientific evidence for this global warming problem and the erroneously reported “record temperatures” in Honolulu are being widely reported in the popular media as further evidence of the urgency in solving this problem. Failure to correct this data is dishonest and brings into disrepute both your organization and yourselves, not to mention the reputation and prestige of science in general.
If you care to make a clarification on this matter, I will be happy to consider it and I am sure Anthony would be happy to entertain your comment on his blog. If the clarification should simply be restatement of the “a degree or two doesn’t matter” variety, then be forewarned that it will not be acceptable. Accuracy of measurement is important in both science and the battle of public relations.
I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
All that being said, it is worth pointing out that we have been relying on a variety of articles and have not heard what NWS Honolulu has to say for themselves. The decision on the records may not have been theirs to make. They may be defering the decision. They may be running side-by-side measurements. We don’t know. As reported, the issue certainly looks bad, but on this site, Anthony’s site, let’s gather the facts before rushing to talk about dark, smelly conspiracies. Conspiracy, somewhere, there may be, but evidence, proof, documentation…. I need good, solid evidence before going to man the barricades….
Since this is about NOAA temperatures and they just came out with their report about USA warming. Lets look at the USA 48 temperatures. Since Anthony has done all the work and we can pretty much say that the NOAA temperature data for the USA is dubious, lets use the UAH and RSS satellite temperatures for the USA 48.
Bob Tisdale has pretty much convinced me that the 1998 El Nino had an anomalous effect on temperatures, so what I do is look at the RSS and UAH charts for the period Jan 1979 – Oct 1997 and Nov 1998 – Present for RSS and UAH. Basically cutting out the bump caused by the El Nino. (The effect has still not worn off according to Bob, but I’ll ignore that)
The results are for the USA 48:
RSS 1.68 Deg C per Century 1979 – 1997 (linear trend)
-4.2 Deg C per Century 1998 to Present (linear trend)
UAH 2.54 Deg C per Century 1979 to 1997 (linear trend)
-3.24 Deg C per Century 1998 to Present (linear trend)
Seems to me the USA 48 could use all the CO2 it can get!! NOAA better make darn sure it’s temperature data is better that the satellite data.
OT but maybe worth a millisecond of attention.

When I was 14, I asked my father. “Dad, can I join PETA? He went silent and then answered. “Son, you’re too young to join PETA”.
When I was 15, I asked him the same question. He answered thus. “Son, you’re too old to join PETA”. Thanks Dad, you were right
It’s in moderation as I scribble. Place your bets Ladies and Gents – pass or fail?
My PC is playing up just now. I tried to post this earlier but the tea-leaves said that it didn’t get through. Here goes.
Got to admit, however much you may deplore the ‘delusionalists’ for their repudiation of the scientific method, you have to praise them for their loyalty.
Not for them a curt dismissal into forced retirement and un-thanked obscurity, for an elderly and once-respected sensor-servant brought low by the wearage and tearage of life into disrespected and premature senility.
When you have right on your side, inconvenient facts are but, insignificant, vermin fully deserving of being ridden down.
I salute your chivalry, Viscount NOAA and wish you well for the remainder of your Crusade. Droit de seigneur – Alive and Kicking once more!
Anthony, may I ask you something? Have you been in the weather business for >= three decades? If so, does that make you both a weatherologist and a climatologist?
Just wondering!
REPLY: Why would I want either title? – A
9.5 years, CO2 according to Mauna Loa has gone up every year, but no rise in world temperatures.

3 degree hotter temperature sensors readings due to component failure are to be averaged into the system, irregardless of the known failure.
And I personally witnessed a more serious error.
How many more are there escaping notice?
The issue and the question are valid.
There are aspects and side issues too, but our Forum host has requested rightly that we stick to the business at hand.
How many +1 degree and +2 degree errors are out there polluting the record as we talk?
Errors that are never to be removed??
Anthony:
Is the ASOS temp sensor failure (my judgment, not NOAAs) a relatively slow process, or a sudden jump (up, obviously)? Slow upward drift of these neat little sensors could explain a lot of things.

I just finished the “Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States” pdf. Depressing. I cut and pasted it into WordPerfect so I could highlight the distortions/misrepresentations/
liesmisstatements/omissions/etc., but I ran out of highlighter. Found a few typos, too.I did like the photo of weeds growing better with increased CO2. Didn’t mention the huge increase in crop productivity we have already seen. Didn’t mention a lot of stuff, come to think of it. Pointed out that if the whole Antarctic melted it would raise the sea level a bunch. Didn’t mention that if we were hit by an asteroid we’d be in even worse shape; both equally likely.
Arrrgh.
Maybe we should organize a protest rally to shut down the weather station. It surely warrants the widest possible publicity. Even the radio station got the joke!
Hmm, what came first…
The sensor? Or the asphalt road, the a/c, and the power transformer…
