From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT
By Paul Homewood
Back to the Met Office’s State of the UK Climate 2023 report.
This time, a look at wind storms:
https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/joc.8553
Despite the plethora of silly names the Met Office has given every passing low-pressure system, and despite their persistent advertising of high wind speeds on top of mountains and clifftops as being representative, this new report admits that storms were much worse in the past:
.
As well as peak speeds, mean wind speeds seem to have fallen over time as well:

Having spent 20yrs collecting data for the Met Office, and seeing first-hand how data was ‘adjusted’ (upwards) for various reasons, and how missing data was infilled from somewhere not remotely close, their daily ‘climate change’ narrative doesn’t surprise me.
Unfortunately, they only mention things in their ‘report’ that they want you to hear and the biased BBC, happily comply.
“and how missing data was infilled from somewhere not remotely close,”
Doesn’t matter how close. The data for a particular station is valid only for that station. Infilling is simply making stuff up.
After seeing what the Met Office does with grid data, I don’t trust them one bit.
Just one example, the grid data for the UK during December 2010 initally showed a slight positive anomaly over the land of England, Wales and Scotland.
After complaining it was adjusted and showed some very slight cooling in areas over land. Why was this such a big issue?
It was the coldest December recorded in UK history with the sea around harbours freezing. The 2nd coldest recorded ever in the CET, with only 0.1c difference between the coldest. With Urban Heat Islands nowadays and taking this into account this was easily the coldest December ever recorded. The 0.1c adjustment due to Urban Heat was nowhere near enough for comparison between the 19th and 21st centuries.
Yet the grid data show this month to be slightly postive, lately adjusted to only very slightly negative. If the coldest ever December technically recorded doesn’t show cold on grid data, then only an Ice age will have any effect on it.
Light breeze Brian etc is obviously the next logical step.
Quite frankly, the Met Office has become a national joke; although it is curious to see how many non UK citizens, eg Mr Stokes or that Username, believe it to be absolutely trustworthy. Lucky they don’t have to pay for it and suffer its glaring errors – no hurricane coming, BBQ summers etc etc.
How Labour will kickstart economic growth…
Government cuts £1.3bn of UK tech and AI funding
And £800 million of that was for an exascale computer at Edinburgh university. To put that into context the UK is paying £2.92 billion per year on hotel bills.
No doubt they can supply an abacus.
Modern tech relies on increasing energy consumption. With AI that increases 10fold. The computer (data)centres need it. If they dont get it they will leave the country. Solar and wind energy are a nono. There goes your ‘smart’ everything idea. Not very smart, me thinks..
My idea?
Care to expand on that?
How much power will Quantum Computing need?
Our thinking processes often require what is known as an open mind. During the COVID-19 debacle we all experienced the reassurances of the open minded few against the media assisted doom laden agenda many.. Unfortunately the UK Met Office was far too far up its own backside to ever have noticed that. Another public authority with too much money and too little talent. Take away their computer and let them learn to use pen, ruler, ink and an abacus to give their brains much needed exercise after so many years of abject complacency.
.
“” thinking processes”” in some, nay in many, are not what they once were.
“””Government advisor John Woodcock has called for Covid-style lockdowns to suppress anti-immigration protests triggered by the Southport stabbings.”””
“The British public will back them in whatever measures they feel are necessary to get this situation under control.”
https://unherd.com/newsroom/government-advisor-calls-for-covid-style-controls-of-mass-protests/
I’d like to see them try it.
Remember remember the 5th of November…
Starmer and Co are talking tough with fast track Courts and prison time for all their ‘right wing thugs’ when they’re paying to hotel immigrants while cutting energy subsidies to oldies to try and get expenditure under control so who are they kidding? The woke elites and their woke police are fast losing control of the country and how’s Belfast with IRA and Unionists arm in arm in the streets?
Starmer blew the initial response to the stabbings completely and now sounds like Comical Ali. Ditch the woke and respond to the immigration crisis you idiots before the stock market throws in the towel with the rudderless country. Look to the Navy to stop the boats like Oz did as you only have to make a few lose their dough to put the facilitators out of biz.
Shame they can’t fast-track the process of kicking illegal immigrants out.
If they deported all the illegals in Britain every Turkish barber and nail salon would close, and Labour would never win an election again.
They will, of course, not lock down Palestinian “gatherings”.
Too many folk doing non-jobs. However the safe thing is not to let them into the real world of work.
That graph is interesting, particularly as it contradicts all the net zero doom mongering. Maybe the Met Office guys who did this didn’t get the memo.
Sadly, this only covers a few decades. As H.H.Lamb pointed out, storms during the Little Ice Age were far, far worse than today. His estimates of deaths caused by historic storms e.g. in the 17th and 18th centuries were enormous, far worse than anything today. Extreme weather is a symptom of global cooling, not warming. A warmer world in general will always be less stormy.
During the LIA storms were so destructive that the elites believed it couldn’t be natural, and that some people should be blamed for these catastrophes. Sound familiar? Seems we haven’t evolved very much since then. In this case the people blamed were witches. Their crimes were collectively known as “weather cooking”. Many innocent people were killed because they had supposedly caused destructive storms.
The truth is very simple. Warm is good. Cold is bad.
Chris
Maybe the Met Office guys who did this did get the memo but had the courage to be honest. And in today’s cultural climate that would take a lot of guts. Hopefully in very few years time we can start to discover some of today’s unsung heroes.
They are just agreeing with Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the UK’s Royal Meteorological Society who told the BBC’s Radio 4 ‘World at One’ (17 Feb 2022)
“If you look back over the last, say, 50 years or so there isn’t a compelling trend that we’ve seen in the amount of storminess we get in the UK” and
“we’re not seeing any significant changes or trends within the number of storms or maximum wind gusts over the last five decades”
“His estimates of deaths caused by historic storms e.g. in the 17th and 18th centuries were enormous”
I don’t think deaths is a good way to compare modern to historic storms. What were the various infrastructures like in the 17th and 18th centuries? Warning systems? Evacuation routes? Building codes?
They didn’t have fossil fuels to help them out either.
Severn Estuary Flood 20th Jan 1606 – 2000 UK deaths
(Death rolls of 100,000 were reputed in England and Holland in the floods of 1099, 1421 and 1446)
The Channel Storm 26th Nov 1703 – 8000 UK deaths
So there is nothing unprecedented about the UK’s weather.
But we skeptics knew that, didn’t we.
The null hypothesis was everyone complains about UK weather.
The Royal Society had it right, but now have forgotten “Nullius in verba”
I always go for just let me check that.
Oh no! Less wind means less electricity!
That’s why they started calling this AGW nonsense ‘climate change’
If the storms are less severe, well ehh…that is still climate change….it is still the carbon dioxide (CO2) that did it…not so?
In the meantime, I wrote a little note for the Dutch website, which I have entitled the mystery of the missing man-made CO2. Love to hear what you guys here think of it. Click on the translate button (American Flag) in the left hand corner to read in English.
Sorry. Forgot to give you the link.

“a) the oceans regulate the composition of the atmosphere; ” (from your link)
Yes it does seem that way.
The rate of increase of CO2 very closely follows the UAH ocean atmospheric data..
Rate of CO2 spikes at El Nino events
There is even a small step change in the rate of CO2 increase after major El Nino, just like in the temperature data.
This graph punctures the entire CAGW narrative conclusively. It should be more widely known.
Atmospheric CO2 follows ENSO & SST’s well with little or no human influence.
Claim for human cause being ocean pH change, but I don’t see the resolution being that accurate over millions of years and could had easily been pH 8.1 or 8.0 before. IMO the change has been too small to detemine if humans are having any effect on ocean pH and the errors are not smaller than the change.
Over the last million years, mean surface seawater pH has been relatively stable. Oscillating between 8.3, during cold periods (e.g. during the last glacial maximum 20,000 years ago), and 8.2, during warm periods (e.g. just prior to the industrial revolution)
Message to Jim Dale…………….join the dots.
I doubt he is capable of that level of thinking…. even if numbered them for him.
The temperature gradient between the equator and the poles is one of the major causes that drives climate and storminess. Obviously, the climate and storm index for the majority of the last 2.6 million years when the good Earth was in the grip of major glacial advances would have been a lot worse than now. We now live in a climate optimum that has allowed humanity to expand to 8+ billion people, combined with the utilization of hydrocarbons.
In any event, warmer has been historically better than colder climates as should be so plainly obvious. Climate has always been the domain for scoundrels to cast blame on someone or something, and today is really no different from the dark ages. Except now there are more scoundrels wanting your soul in exchange for promising better weather. What a sham…
The most severe weather usually occurs when colder air from polar sources clashes with warmer air from Sub-Tropical sources. These form low pressure systems that can bring heavy rain/snow and strong winds. The further South this colder air reaches across the northern hemisphere, the more surface area of the planet comes in contact with warmer air and increases cloudiness. This also explains the increased sunshine hours recorded in the northern hemisphere over recent decades.
A warmer planet leads to colder air staying further North so these clashes reduce and are less severe. When the planet was colder during especially the 1970’s and 1980’s, these clashes occurred more often leading to this observation of windier and generally more severe weather.
The media and alarmist scientists are wrong about this and the planet does not support their nonsense.
Looks like the warm AMO phase is reducing the mean wind speed and the gust speeds.
