“[COP28 Preparation] Climate loss and damage talks end in failure”

Climate ‘loss and damage’ talks end in failure

Paris  Sat, October 21, 2023

A crucial meeting on climate “loss and damages” ahead of COP28 ended in failure Saturday, with countries from the global north and south unable to reach an agreement, according to sources involved in the talks.

The agreement to set up a dedicated fund to help vulnerable countries cope with climate “loss and damage” was a flagship achievement of last year’s COP27 talks in Egypt.

But countries left the details to be worked out later.

The failure “is a clear indication of the deep chasm between rich and poor nations”, Harjeet Singh, head of global political strategy for Climate Action Network International, said in a statement to AFP on Saturday.

Going by the steady, unbroken rise of atmospheric CO2 measured by Mauna Loa observatory, none of the money spent on climate conferences or the trillions of dollars spent on CO2 reduction measures to date have had any noticeable impact on global CO2. There is zero chance the hundred billion dollars per year recipient nations want will have an impact.

It is time to call an end to the charade and futility, time to cancel all future COPs, and stop this pointless waste of taxpayer resources once and for all.

How much does each COPfest cost? The lavish food, copious drink, the ‘entertainment’, the transport, the venues and the whole setup, even before you take into account the amounts for ‘greasing the skids’.

the vast majority of CO2 in the atmosphere is naturally occurring and there isn’t anything that can be done about that – so removing the tiny amount due to transportation and industrial activities (something like 1 one one hundredth of the composition of the atmosphere) has no impact on anything let alone something so complicated as the climate

Climate Action Network International,

2030 vision:
In the next decade we have harnessed the power of the people to keep global warming to 1.5ºC and have brought about the transformational change in our societies and economies that ensures equity and justice; poverty eradication; sustainable livelihoods; and the protection of the rights of nature.

Yet another global collectivist group think activist radical green organisation that should be eliminated.

It’s the poverty eradication that jumps out. Is that the eradication of poor people or are they simply going to change the measurement so that everyone other than the elite will be classed as the poor. The good book says the poor will always be with us.

Same chart, but adds global temperatures.

Shows that there simply is no correlation between CO2 levels and global temperatures.

From the attached article:
“A series of talks held this year have tried to tease out consensus on fundamentals like the structure, beneficiaries and contributors — a key issue for richer nations who want China to pay into the fund.

But, but China is defined as a developing country under IPCC and I suspect COP thus with its own stupidity there is no way China will fork out any cash.

The idea, a group of state funded money grubbers i.e. tax payer funded COP attendees, would desire or push for the cessation of their annual expenses paid two week fly away jolly, is the ultimate ‘turkeys being asked to vote for an early Christmas’ situation.
The number of those attending COP28 is reported to be around 70,000 yes, seventy thousand.
How anyone could describe that horde as ‘a conference’ does not understand the meaning of language.
We must be getting close to the stage in the evolution of the climate crisis religion, where devotees feel an obligation to present themselves at the annual pilgrimage to COP.

The $100 billion a year is separate from loss and damage which is estimated by the UN to be in the trillions, not billions. No way we will pay so it is symbolic at best.

What has been lost?

What has been damaged?

Yes, and how is that damage connected to CO2?

That CO2 connection should be established first before we pay any damages.

To date, no connection between CO2 and the Earth’s weather has ever been established.

“Loss and damage” is any adverse impact on (assumed) poor people (in UN-calculated dollar terms) caused by normal weather extremes. It especially covers for government incompetence and corruption in causing such damages.

October 22, 2023 7:54 am

“COP” should really stand for Climate-Organized Party since it:
— only benefits the wealthy attendees, who reside/meet in opulent settings and have meals & drinks & entertainment (paid by their governments or industrial sponsors) that 99.9999% of the world’s population could never afford
— only results in public proclamations and useless paper
— never results in meaningful policy change in any country, only the promise of wealth redistribution
— is permanently flawed in discussing topics that are incompatible with the best science related to paleoclimatology and the clear absence of any current “climate emergency” or “climate catastrophe”

27 past COPs and the organizers haven’t yet recognized (or have intentionally overlooked) these facts . . . yeah, let’s go for number 28!

Just to add to the first chart:
Due to the eruption of the Mauna Loa Volcano, measurements from Mauna Loa Observatory were suspended as of Nov. 29, 2022. Observations from December 2022 to July 4, 2023 are from a site at the Maunakea Observatories, approximately 21 miles north of the Mauna Loa Observatory. Mauna Loa observations resumed in July 2023.

Monthly Average Mauna Loa CO2

Might I suggest that the wealthy developed nations don’t owe the poor ones a damn thing due to climate change and CO2 emissions. Why?

Rising CO2 Improves Crop Yields 3% Per Year – Critical To Feed The World – Climate Change Dispatch

“The elevated CO2 fertilization effect is driving global greening trends, pushing back deserts, enhancing photosynthesis by 30 to 50%, improving water use efficiency, and boosting crop yields by about 3% every year since 1961.”

and…

“Another new study documents a 30 to 50% increase in photosynthesis with elevated CO2 (eCO2, 451 to 720 ppm) and a ~25% increase in crop yield. The authors cite results indicating grain yield may increase 54% when CO2 concentrations rise from 400 to 700 ppm.”

How much have the emissions of the wealthy nations contributed to the increase in crop yield of the poor nations who are demanding handouts here? What has the monetary value of those increased crop yields been over the years and decades?

The poor nations need to concentrate on economic development instead handouts from the wealthy nations unless they want the money for development. If it is the latter, they should just say so and never mind climate change.

The UN is worthless, we need to get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US. It is nothing more than a money sink, there are dozens of better ways to spend our money.

Edward Katz
October 22, 2023 2:35 pm

Considering the frequent poor results of foreign aid to the developing world in the first place and the even worse one when the money goes to autocracies, it’s no wonder the wealthier nations are balking at throwing good money after bad. Even if those Third World countries use the money for climate action, they are are more likely to use it to build fossil fuel plants of one sort or another and actually increase their emissions. That’s a best-case scenario because at least they’ll be increasing the energy supply to their populations. Just as likely is one where the autocrats in charge just beef up their bank accounts and buy more arms for their security forces to keep them in power.
