The Audubon Society does not give a rat’s ass about raptors killed by wind turbines, either.

That’s the beauty of offshore wind: no piles of bird carcasses.

In Ontario, the carcasses are hauled away by predators before those who are responsible for counting carcasses ever arrive. Even the head of the Sierra Club wasn’t the least bit concerned about this. We had to ‘save the planet’…..not the birds of prey.

Mass Audubon Position on Offshore Wind
https://www.massaudubon.org/take-action/advocate/policy-priorities/position-on-offshore-wind

For Massachusetts and New England, offshore wind offers the most promising opportunity to transition to clean, renewable energy. With dense populations located near the coast, and abundant wind resources located over a shallow continental shelf, this resource can provide a large portion of our energy needs.

Given that Wokeachusetts has over 6 million people and not a great deal of coast- and it’s a nut zero by ’50 state, there will have to be many thousand wind turbines off the coast. Now the state Audubon society is claiming climate change is the biggest threat to birds. But until the climate scam got cranked up- they were bitching that the biggest threat to birds was the lack of early succession forests- so birds that live in young forests were getting rare. That’s more likely to be true- and because of that MA Audubon has supported the state fish and wildlife agency’s desire to do more clearcutting! Of course clearcutting results in higher carbon emissions- so with the climate scam, they decided to change their tune and now blame the lower numbers of some species on climate change. And, they support the state’s nut zero law because they actually think it’ll make a difference on a global scale which is absolutely crazy. Now we’re faced, here, with having to cover the land with solar farms and the ocean with wind turbines, while giving up gas stoves, having to buy EVs and most of us will be pushed into poverty as most industries have moved to China. Another reason the state Audubon supports wind is that some of THEIR properties were theatened by proposed nearby solar farms and one was threatened by a large wind farm- which of course they opposed. They’re hypocrites like all the other entities in this state- which basically means ALL entities in this state which is why I’ve renamed it Wokeachusetts. I’m hoping the term will catch on and I can brag about having coined it. 🙂

Seriously, it’s hard to find hardly any entity in this state that isn’t woke- all of government, all academics, almost all businesses. The state has historically considered itself sort of the Athens of North America, what with the first university at Hah-vid and having been one of the first areas with abolitionists and I think the first state with public education. Fine, buut now it’s gone off the deep end.

There is no functioning Republican Party here nor a Libertarian Party. I’ve tried contacting both to find out about their climate policies and they never got back to me.

Dead marine and land-based wildlife only matter when fossil fuels are involved. Wind turbines are saintly and are not subject to criticism.

I remember a few years back when Exxon was fined millions of dollars because a few Canadian geese died in one of their storage ponds. I appears that eagles and whales can be sacrificed at will.

Amazing given that most enviros and much of the public isn’t fond of Canadian geese because they poop in ponds and lakes and sometimes on lawns, in large numbers- I like them as I don’t care where they poop. 🙂 To fine Exxon over that is lunatic. The population of that species is very abundant.

Used to avidly hunt them around the Chesapeake Bay, delicious.
Fun true story. A neighbor was goose hunting on the Bay, nailed one up close, and it crashed into him on his hunting boat fracturing two ribs.
Revenge of the Canada goose.

In a landmark study, the U.S. Navy has concluded that it killed at least six whales in an accident involving common ship-based sonars. The finding, announced late last month by the Navy and the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), may complicate Navy plans to field a powerful new sonar system designed to detect enemy submarines at long distances.

Sonar harming/killing whales and dolphins was common knowledge when I was in the Navy
over 50yrs ago. I was assigned to an ASW state of the art “Hunter Killer” unit
and knew several of the sonar ASW crew well.
. A sonar signal will bounce off the thermocline so really only goes
down a few hundred feet. Some of the “Tom Clancy” type stuff we did use was a passive sonar
system and a MAD or magnetic anti-submarine detection system. I still know some
of the crew today, one was involved with converting this stuff from analog electronics
to digital with a MIC contractor then he went off to UCSD as a professor.

2 things. Firstly I thought all sonar systems were passive sonar systems until you went active? Second the MAD is a Magnetic Anomaly Detector, at least it is in the Royal Navy.

The sonar dome at the fo’c’scle or bow is where the ping was sent/received. There
were at least two passive types that I knew about.

One looked like a mortar round in size and shape and had a spool of fine wire that was clipped to a device on the wall and dropped down thu a tube into the sea. I saw
a mineral/oil exploration unit years later that had something that looked like it and
they were flying and doing core drilling in the mountains
It was all cold war stuff.
I remember the Tom Clancy books later and it was so weird as it was about the stuff the tech’s used to talk about. Clancy’s best buddy was a defense contractor
who held a bunch of patents or so I was told.

What is especially sad about this is that according to EIA off shore wind is 3x on shore wind. Onshore wind LCOE correctly calculated is about 2.5x CCGT. So off shore LCOE is 7.5x CCGT—hopelessly uneconomic. Bad deal for whales and us.

People cannot see or hear offshore wind turbines. Besides government subsidies, it is the only reason anyone would attempt it to begin with.

Greenpeace is too busy pursuing exactly this off the NW coast of Australia, except that it is the oil industry doing surveys. They are blind to turbine pollution and environmental damage.

Re: the CAGW part

There IS no CAGW (unlike Covid, which was, indeed, managed terribly in much of the United States) .

The government made it up. Given the degree of havoc their lobbiests, the “renewables” scammers, have wrought, they seem to have managed (their propaganda/ corruption of peer review/crooked “science,” etc.) it very well.

See also: Commerce Clause law and Takings/Eminent Domain law.

They are managing those travesties quite handily.

They do excessive taxation very well, too.

“Whales, schmales, so what?” yawns 80% of the public, “there are a TON of whales in the world. What’s a few less? WE HAVE TO SAVE THE PLANET!!”

The only reason they believe we must “save the planet”

(from human CO2 emissions, thus, even though windmills do little to reduce CO2, these brainwashed people back the bird slaughtering, whale killing wind turbines)

is because they have been LIED to very effectively, using highly inaccurate, emotion-tugging, video of polar bears, etc..

SUGGESTION TO ANYONE TRYING TO FIGHT AGW (and save whales)

(of course, “anyone” does not include the lukewarmists out there whose delight in life is to split hairs while whales and raptors are dying and while our liberty is permanently being taken away from us —->

— > ATTENTION/ATENCIÓN/ACHTUNG! –> lukewarmists: you are doing more harm than good with your largely non-data supported attempt to be “fair and balanced.” Simply speak TRUTH. There is no data proving human CO2 emissions significantly cause ANY meaningful shifts in the climate zones of the earth.)

engage emotion on the side of data and truth.

The truth is:

— North Atlantic Right Whales are ENDANGERED.
— Negative (permanently) ROI/EROEI wind turbines kill whales.

Whales like these, who sound like…..

this:

To my ear (of course, I am very emotional and love animals very much — but, so are and so do lots of those brainwashed by the AGW scammers…) this sounds like a baby wailing. Hearing it, in this context, breaks my heart.

Don’t expect any environmental organization to mention something like because whales and other wildlife in general can be sacrificed as long as their deaths don’t refute their alarmist agendas. These guys are as phony as the proverbial 3-dollar bill, and they regularly reveal their colors anytime there’s a climate conference that they unfailingly attend on their private jets. So should anyone expect them to come clean regarding the numbers of wildlife killed by wind and solar projects?

observa
September 10, 2023 6:49 pm

No I don’t go along with Schellenberger’s correlation equals causation here. That’s because it’s inevitable that we’re witnessing more natural whale deaths with the cessation of whaling and their exponential recovery impacting their food source.

In the case of Southern Right whales their breeding migration takes them from their krill feeding grounds in Antarctica all the way to high energy coastline of the Bunda cliffs of the Great Australian Bight for 6 months of the year. They rely on stored energy for that trek. They choose the noisy coast deliberately for calving and to hide from Orcas that could more easily track vulnerable females and calves no longer in large migration pods with protective males. Poo poo to man made noise here.

This is such obvious BS. Human underwater inferference has gone up expontially compared to the recovery of the whale populations. The world’s oceans are now filled with tens of thousands of ocean going vessels of every type. They are increasing numbers of wind turbines in spawning areas.

And you want to make excuses for them. So don’t go along with causation and correlation here? Fine. What’s your explanation?

Go home Greenpeace and Rainbow Warriors as the whales are saved by oil coal gas and nukes. Humpbacks are crawling all over the Australian coast up as far as Darwin and the more vulnerable hunted Southern Rights are doubling every ten years. Inevitably they will all come into a maximum balance with their food sources and all this going on as you say with more man-made ocean noise than ever. How were they doing in the quiet wooden sailing ship days? The whales get by just fine nowadays like we do in noisy cities.

See doonman at 11:46, today.

High-decibel sonar kills cetaceans.

Per the United States Navy. Which had/has a great interest in that not being true (Note: nevertheless, protecting the U.S.A. from enemy submarines is arguably important enough to risk some whale deaths, UNLIKE “saving the planet” from CO2, a complete sham).

Shellenberger cites 71 whale deaths since last December with the ONLY meaningful new threats being the wind scammers’ sonar and marine vessels.

At the very LEAST, windmill construction should be haulted immediately until the “renewables” pushers prove they are NOT likely to harm whales.

In other words:

Shellenberger, et al. have presented a prima facie case. THE BURDEN OF PROOF IS NOW ON THE WIND SCAMMERS to prove their junk is not harmful.

I’m not defending offshore wind turbines here but OTOH I’m not falling for some purist Green hysterics overly dramatizing the sensitivity of whales to man-made ocean noise and disturbance. Whales are a lot tougher than that just like us with the minimal tradeoffs in life and they can get along just fine with wind turbines, shipping, oil ang gas rigs, wharf and jetty piling, groyne making, etc.

“…exponential recovery” – but Northern Right whales are supposedly critically endangered – to the extent that their breeding grounds (tens of thousands of square miles of ocean) are subjected to onerous rules for shipping, supposedly to reduce mortality. Maybe the whales off Australia are OK, but this population is NOT.

Not a fan of offshore wind. Not even a bit. But whales have been beaching and mysteriously dying for eternity, and long before sonar was invented. Is Sonar adding to this? Perhaps. But the bulk of it is solar. Yes, the sun kills whales. Here’s how: https://ibdst.blogspot.com/2023/03/fact-check-why-are-whales-beaching-in-nj.html
