The Biggest Garbage Heaps in Human History

So much for the lies about clean, renewable, sustainable energy. Where will all the trash go?

Daily news feeds present applause lines, and numerous movies include framing shots with wind turbines – blatantly or subtly promoting the “inevitable transition” from “dirty” fossil fuels to “low-cost, clean, green, renewable, sustainable” wind and solar power.

Net Zero Green New Deal proponents need to start pondering some immutable realities.

Yes, even modern coal plants emit pollutants, along with plant-fertilizing carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases.” Gas plants emit CO2 and water vapor.

And yes, wind turbines, solar panels, and vehicle and grid backup batteries have no such emissions – at their point of operation. But they generate massive pollutants in their manufacturing and other stages.

Modern coal, gas, nuclear and hydroelectric power plants operate for 50 years or more. They generate 24/7 and don’t need backup power. A few can electrify entire cities. They’re built mostly from concrete, steel, aluminum and copper, with a few exotic metals and minerals imported from adversarial nations.

They don’t have to be replaced every 20-30 years, as wind and solar generators do. A few thousand suffice. They can be built near urban and industrial centers, instead of hundreds of miles away, connected by long transmission lines.

The more we require that cars, cooking, hot water and home heating systems run on electricity, instead of gasoline or natural gas – and that the electricity come from “renewable” sources – the more wind turbines, solar panels, and backup coal, gas or battery power we need for windless, sunless hours, days and weeks.

The more turbines and panels we install, the more we must put them in increasingly poorer quality areas, the worse they then perform, the less electricity they generate, and the more we need.

The more we install, the more mining, drilling and processing we need for the metals, minerals and petrochemicals to manufacture them – from ever-lower quality deposits. Billions of tons of rock must be extracted to get millions of tons of ores, which are processed with acids and other chemicals, to get thousands or hundreds pounds of metals. Vast stretches of farmlands, wildlife habitats and scenic areas are despoiled and poisoned in the process, but they’re far away and out of sight.

Net Zero zealots rarely admits any of this – or that the “climate crisis” is exaggerated and fabricated. But they should at least acknowledge that wind, solar and battery systems will leave behind the biggest and most toxic garbage heaps in human history:

* Billions of tons of airborne, liquid and solid wastes, mostly left untreated in overseas operations that aren’t run by Western mining companies that are highly regulated on environmental, workplace safety, fair wage, child labor and other standards; and

* Billions of tons of enormous, non-recyclable, non-burnable trash – wind turbine foundations and blades, solar panels, vehicle and backup batteries, transformers and other components that mostly get left behind where installed, end up in huge landfills or just get dumped somewhere.

I’ve written multiple articles and reports on impacts from “renewable” energy mining and installations. The International Energy Agency has issued extensive studies. Even progressive American film producer Michael Moore has highlighted these inconvenient truths.

Databases and other sources combined with Grok estimate that United States currently has about 76,000 wind turbines and more than 650,000,000 photovoltaic solar panels. Together, they generate about 17% of US electricity – intermittently and unpredictably, perhaps 25-30% of the year. Globally, some 400,000 turbines and 6,000,000,000 panels do likewise.

As of June 2026, the USA accounted for roughly 9,000,000 electric-vehicle and home-backup batteries, plus 52,000 MW of power capacity (140,000 MWh of energy storage) in grid-scale backup batteries. (Existing grid backup installations costing tens of billions of dollars will provide enough electricity to power a state for less than a couple hours on a hot, windless day.)

This is a tiny fraction of what the United States alone would need to power all-electric cities and industries, operate EVs, and recharge backup batteries for windless, sunless days and weeks – using only wind and solar for electricity generation.  

There are few adequate legislative, regulatory, bond or financial requirements for removing this equipment and their foundations after they’ve been damaged or destroyed in storms, have reached the end of their productive lives, or have been incinerated in battery fires.

The following numbers are tedious. Focus primarily on the italicized language.

Depending on turbine size and height, US onshore wind turbine foundations are 50-100 feet in diameter and 10-16 feet deep. Each is composed of 460-1,500 cubic yards of concrete, weighing 1,100-2,700 tons.

That’s 76,000 foundations and (using averages) 145,000,000 tons of concrete and rebar, just for the USA!

Onshore wind turbine blades average 210 feet in length, 13 feet in height and 24 tons. (Offshore turbine blades are much longer, thicker and heavier.) Each turbine has three blades.

That’s 5,500,000 tons of American blades. Laid end-to-end, they’d stretch 48,000,000 feet: 9,100 miles – nearly two round-trip flights from Washington, DC to Los Angeles!

Using a combined residential/industrial average of 4×6 feet in size, 2 inches deep, and 55 pounds per panel, the 650 million United States photovoltaic solar panels add up to –

2,600,000,000 cubic feet of American solar trash, weighing 18,000,000 tons! Enough to fill the huge Los Angeles Coliseum 45 times, with bleachers, stairways and concessions removed!

This includes only currently operating United States onshore turbines and panels – not those already dismantled, nor future installations, nor offshore wind turbines, nor any EV or grid-backup batteries.

Cumulative global wind garbage (blades only) is projected to reach 200,000,000 tons by 2050. Cumulative global solar trash, 78,000,000 tons!

Turbine blades are made from fiberglass or carbon-fiber composites; they’re extremely difficult to cut into pieces and nearly impossible to shred or recycle. Solar panels are theoretically recyclable, at least for their aluminum frames; but their copper, silver and other metals are embedded in glass or plastic and nearly impossible to recover economically. Batteries are likewise recyclable, in theory – but it’s a very expensive and dangerous process, because components are prone to massive spontaneous chemical combustion.

The fallback, and most likely, option will be landfilling – or just dumping them somewhere, as an unscrupulous “recycler” did on a million square feet of grassland near Sweetwater, Texas. That would mean toxic metals will leach out into soils, groundwater, streams, rivers, lakes and oceans.

So what exactly do corporate and government officials plan to do with these incomprehensible mountains of trash? Where will those landfills be located? In whose backyards? How do they even plan to remove those monstrous wind turbine foundations? How do they plan to PAY for it all?

Do you still think wind, solar and battery systems are clean, green, renewable and sustainable? And opposition to wind, solar, transmission line, pipeline and data center installations is insanely intense?

The powers that be are just sweeping these issues under the rug and whistling past the landfill graveyards.

You may want to show up at the next public hearing or shareholders meeting, and demand some answers.

I attended an event sponsored by PEO (Professional Engineers Ontario) around 2008. One of the speakers, (a U Guelph Engineering prof and wind advocate) admitted that Ontario was already “wind saturated” – meaning all the good locations for turbines were already taken, and any new installs would have poor efficiency. The only alternative was off shore, which thankfully has not been permitted. Fully saturated and less than 10% of electrical generation. Every wind turbine backed up with new gas plants. Insanity.

No greater example of the abuse of the land for the green grift exists than in Iowa, wind and corn. Home of some of the world’s richest agricultural land where approaching a third of the acreage under plow goes to making of ethanol for cars to give reduced mpg while food prices increase. And the usual suspects build wind towers for electricity Iowa does not need as conventional generation must be maintained for its reliability.

But Beelzebub didn’t stop doing his damndest with corn-ethanol for cars, no, he was very imaginative and invented the wind energy “industry”. The wind industry makes no sense without green money subsidies of one sort or another — reference one of Beelzebub’s henchmen, Warren Buffet, whose Berkshire Hathaway owns Mid American Energy — which owns Iowa’s largest subsidized crop of windmills which are useful mostly to churn stupid money from states buying energy when they could produce it cheaper themselves, probably with one gas fired energy plant, or other available technology, hopefully nuclear.

Of course they also churn birds and insect life, crop acreage for access roads, while churning out welfare dependent zombies devoid of cost benefit analysis capabilities.
Wind energy is largely redundant energy in Iowa as we are not stupid enough to depend on it, nor is MidAmerican energy which likes cash flow and operates “fossil fuel” plants that must be maintained and online for reliable energy transmission regardless of wind inputs.

Wind has its own uniqueness. While corn acreage at least has the appearance of bounty, (until one realizes what it is mostly used for) the wind machines are gigantic aesthetic assaults on the land and its contours — monuments to stupidity destined to fill ugly pollution causing scrapyards perhaps in perpetuity as there is no economic recycling technology (enter a new subsidy) for the resin and fiberglass monstrosities whose useful life is nowhere close to fossil energy production facilities.

Lest I forget, the latest adjunct to the boondoggle of corn-ethanol for cars is the related CO2 pipeline grift going on in this “green” state. The new grift is furthering the abuse of citizens and the earth, as an inefficient, unnecessary adjunct to the corn-ethanol boondoggle — and proving in its way that ethanol is not the green elixir we were sold (other than as the active ingredient in whisky).

Who advertised that when the corn ethanol for cars boondoggle began decades ago that when ethanol is produced it results in large amounts of the evil CO2? Knowledgable critics did but few sincere green advocates did. That’s right, the new grifters confirm that that evil earth warming “green house gas” is indeed produced in great quantities by sanctified and subsidized in various ways “green” energy ethanol production.

The latest gambit by the usual suspects (the campaign donation distributing grifters) is to promote eminent domain to be used to provide avenues for pipelines (across fertile crop acreages) to distant areas for the CO2 to be sequestered deep underground (for the good of the planet don’t you know) or, ironically, some say to help with fracking. The ironies and hypocrisy abounds. That is not symbiosis. True symbiosis would be letting the CO2 dissipate to increase crop production even if the earth disputably warmed a nudge (which would be to an overall benefit to people).

But so it goes in “green” Iowa. Give me extra pump-jacks, wherever, producing a few barrels a day (resulting in comparatively more Btu’s than the wind farms). Better yet, a nice strategically located nuke plant. Clean coal and mining of uranium has a much smaller footprint for energy than wind or corn.

SV and WTG end of life materials in landfills is something everyone needs to witness.
Very true.
Probably should include the oil used in WTGs in the totals.

But what needs to be included is all of the garbage, toxins,, etc., due to maintenance, repair, and non end-of-life disposal.

Engineering estimates for the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for a WTG is approximately 4.5 years with 50% of the maintenance and repair being major components, not just blades (which are known to break off). In the estimated 15-20 years operational life, 3-5 maintenance operations will be required and if they are not performed, guess what? The WTG produces nothing.

Now also consider how many solar panels have been destroyed by hail and other weather events.

Nothing but a dismal dark future for humanity if this insanity continues.

We have been “informed” that the quantities of petroleum, natural gas, coal, and even uranium are limited and we have x number of years before we run out. It is true, this wonderful planet, while bountiful, is not infinite. So what about lithium, copper, aluminum, gold, nickel, iron/steel, zinc, cobalt, manganese, and all of those other interesting elements? Any of those infinite? No. Why is no one talking about that?

A relevant personal observation. For 4 July week, I drove out to visit my daughter and her family in Colorado. 2 days each way, a route through western Iowa where Berkshire Hathaway’s Mid American has recently (last 10 years) installed massive wind farms. I was trying to count the visible number that were not operating. Averaged about 15%. In some places, about 25%.
No evidence anywhere that anyone was attempting to repair any. Once Berkshire has used up the wind tax credits, probably not economic to even try.

Driving east from Denver some ten years ago, I dimly recollect seeing about that same percantage – 15 to 25 % out of the hundreds scattered across the prairie, that were actually functioning, the rest, monolithic sentinels to idleness. It was but one day’s snapshot, but the wind was blowing, apparently just not hard enough.

There are huge TOXIC sludge lakes in China that can never be remediated.

It is a toss-up which of solar or wind is the most toxic and environmentally destructive manufacturing process.

And which is worse during installation, in use and at end of short erratic intermittent life.

Wind and solar are the most environmentally damaging forms of pseudo-electricity supply ever used in the history of mankind.

Awesome article. It should be mailed out to every household in America ( like what the demoncrats do with their vote by mail ballots) Then there is the issue of all the good land that has been destroyed constructing these “energy farms” and the destroyed landscape by wind machines.
This is a story tip that needs to be read by every American. Let’s STOP Destroying America with crap that only works sometime, and as this article states is even harder to dispose of.

How do they plan to remove those massive foundations???
They Don’t (plan to)!!!
They simply grind down the mounting bolts on the top and cover the entire footing with additional tops oil.
Even when one is damaged and replaced they still pour a new foundation and abandon the old one.
Not economically affordable to remove the old footings and can’t be reused for insurance reasons.

No need. Unlike fossil fuel extraction/generation facilities, the value is above ground. New (and much improved) machines will be installed on the foundations, until either the prenatal SMR’s arrive alive, or the procession of the downside of Hubbert’s curve (already underway) is thwarted by a Jimmy Swaggart forehead swap – YOU GOT YOUR MIRACLE!! Or some combo..

EVEN with NO efforts to slow down ACC. Enjoy the inevitable..

Rubbish, ‘improved’ turbines will require more substantial foundations. They won’t remove the old ones, they will just build news ones inbetween destroying even more nature and land amenity.

“No, the £1.5 billion Whitelee Windfarm Repowering project proposed by ScottishPower Renewables will not reuse the existing turbine foundations because the replacement turbines are vastly larger. The old 215 turbines will be swapped for 124 massive new models standing roughly 250 meters tall that require new, heavy-duty structural base designs.”

An inconsequential process addition in any case. The foundations are inert, unlike most fossil fuel leftovers. It has long been shown that wind requires 1-2% of the carbon emitted and haz waste, on a per kwh PRODUCED basis, extraction to asset retirement, compared to any fossil fuel process. Which is why it is one of the reasons that it wins out so clearly, discounted cost wise.

They are concrete and thereby as inert as any other concrete structure. Remind me again why it is that concrete is supposed to be Bad for the environment?
BTW…turbines need replacement, on average, every 20 years while a Nuclear Generation plant last 80 years. MW per MW wind uses as much concrete as a Nuclear plant to initially build. But the Wind Generation gets replaced multiple times over that 80 year lifespan of Nuclear and so wind uses 4 times the concrete.
Again why is concrete bad? Oh Yea it releases CO2 in the creation and curing.

Dollar for dollar, lifespan for lifespan, availability for availability, capacity for capacity, Land space for Land Space its Wind and Solar that can’t compete with Nuclear’s 80 year lifespan, 24/7/365 availability, 98% capacity factor and 12 acre land requirement for 2,200MW that can’t be beat. Sure with Wind and Solar the Fuel’s Free but only available when Nature decides to deliver it and, in the case of Solar, never when needed most (Evening Peak Demand)

Places are different enough that most power sources will be optimal somewhere – eg geothermal in Greenland but not Vermont and Hydro in Washington State but not North Dakota.

Nuclear power lasts at least 80 years. We have some evidence for this, as there are a number of reactors around the world still producing electricity after more than 50 years.

As all generating stations wear out, they can be and are refurbished for continued operation. Nuclear power plants are no different than any other generation source. The only problem lies in specific reactor technologies like AGRs in Britain which cannot be life-extended.

But everything else can. It’s only a matter of the cost of refurbishment compared to alternatives available.

2,200MW Nuclear costs around $13B -$16B to last 80 years.

While building 2,200MW of Wind and replacing it, and replacing it again, and replacing it yet again costs $46B-$64B over 80 years with subsequent replacements costing more due to inflation.

You’re missing something very large and very long here. It is the very long and very high transmission line to nowhere that is promoted for wind farm establishment or expansion and paid for by rate payers and taxpayers in the form of more tax credits. Do some research for a change and not just cite the windy location itself. See the SunZia transmission line stretching across NM and AZ and realize its footprint, material inputs, fossil fuel construction equipment, and tax credit program to build every inch of it.

You can see the scars of Scottish windfarms from space, every turbine has a base and access track, that’s grassland and peat bog destroyed in vast areas. And millions of trees toppled to make room.

Cheaper? Pants on fire. Far from it, all system costs considered.

The sites, unlike fossil fuel sites, have a non depletable level of value. They have also been preselected exactly for that. So, while production costs will always be extant, they won’t be one and done. Picking away selectively at these costs, while failing to compare them to the qualitatively larger ones for fossil fuels (even shining on ACC costs), is standard WUWT gruel.

Any “New Turbine” requires, for insurance purposes as well as structurally, A New Foundation. You don’t want to erect a 2000 Metric Ton Monstrosity on 20 year old weathered bolts. Too much potential for mounting failure. Which is why they install new footings every time.

Exactly so. Wherever subsidy regimes have been introduced by government, wind turbines have grown up like mushrooms. When the subsidies end, they die almost immediately. That’s the point at which preventive maintenance immediately becomes prohibitively expensive.

Like global warming, the end of the petrodollar and the end of US Social Security I’ve been hearing about Peak oil for my entire life. Decades of true believers unconvinced by argument or data. Some day they will be correct – but remember Hubbert said it 70 years ago. Seventy flippin’ years.

LCOE is as dead as RCP8.5. Use LFSCOE. Wind then loses by more as more wind is installed – pretty obvious really because new wind produces precisely when there is reduced demand thanks to old wind.

You’ve made a fundamental mistake in assuming the Greentard zealots have ANY concern about the environment! When it comes to Greentards we are dealing with the lowest of the low; if not in IQ, then in wisdom and logical thinking. Their felling of pride for doing the “right thing,” and being “good” people is far more important than any consequences to plants, animals, or the environment. They will happily drive countless varieties of birds and bats to extinction, and litter the landscape with toxic or dangerous trash, as long as they receive their sticker proclaiming “I care!”
These are the “useful idiots” that Marxists have always relied on to achieve power, after which they can be killed, starved, or imprisoned. It merely depends on the whims of the psychopaths inhabiting the highest levels of the bureaucracy. If only we had an education system that taught actual history, not the garbage the that has been produced of late!

Teaching history does not change a thing without understanding.

If experienced history does not teach people a thing how should they be able to put a few pages of text into perspective(talking about people who have experience war after war.
Year after Year. Decade after Decade.
All justified by lies, sold by corrupt serial liars who steal, kill and ignore agreements and laws etc whenever it suits them – and on top:all of the wars have been lost.
Yet they will cheer in the exact same way for the next new war – at least when the messenger is from their favorite party.)

If you don’t learn from reality you won’t from a hunderd pages of history – you’ll only learn to pretend that you do
by repeating standard phrases,
but the emotions,the narcissism to be the good guy and the hunt for glory and cheap karma will always overpower reason and logic.

Approaching a conflict, present or past, from different perspectives and regularly playing devils advocate(and other stuff related to critical thinking) will do the job – for wars, green Agendas and everything else.
(and I highly doubt that more than 5 out of 1000 activists would actually have the skill to fathom the similarities of Marxism and their progressivism even if you would teach them everything about history)

Keep in mind that many of those who are in charge:
the teachers, politicians etc,
are from an era when the level of education was way different and better;

What’s particularly insane is when pointing all this out to green zealots, a typical response is: “compare the waste to coal ash and fossil fuel infrastructure…” meaning they apparently think these things magically appear out of thin air with no fossil fuel inputs. Trying to explain to them that wind and solar don’t replace coal, gas or nuclear, wind and solar only increase the need for them. The level of ignorance is truly breathtaking.

This would have never be possible with woke renewables.
The mining, heating up to 1000+ degrees celsius refine iron and create concrete,
moving the 145 mio to their destination.

think of all the concrete and steel buried never to be seen again.
the chemicals and structural materiel’s used to make blades, then buried in a landfill.

In terms of recycling solar panels and carbon fiber blades, people are working on that, but we don’t need that solution right now because there is not enuf waste.

A lot of times the boiler and turbine are removed, but the generator itself is left connected spinning as a statcomm to provide frequency stability.

In the Port Lauderdale repower, the site was leveled but for the existing grid connections, then a bigger CCGT was installed on the same footprint, also enabling 6 peakers elsewhere to be taken down permanently.

Yes, and I understand that coal mines were often used as the “start point” for electricity distribution grid lines networks.

Which boosts efficiency and saves on costs compared to having randomly-dispersed grid connections as happens with wind farms & solar arrays.

Basically all the metals are recycled… unlike wind turbine blades and solar panels.

Concrete slabs are easy to remove and the concrete is crushed, which is used as necessary fill for road base and many other purposes.

Reo-bar separated and recycled to make new steel.

Coal Ash is used in a myriad of places in new cement, building and road construction, dry-wall etc

Basically nothing is what could be called “waste”.

Only governments will undertake ‘recycling’ of expired wind & solar bits & pieces because the cost of the efforts makes them unprofitable.

Governments use “other peoples’ money” (taxpayers), so unprofitable boondoggles are no impediment.

Currently there is no noncarbon DEFR options available that are capable of covering the inconstant Wind and Solar generation shortfall for a 24 hour period let alone for an Hour. The only reliable back-up to unreliable Wind and Solar Is COAL, GAS AND NUCLEAR which, as an aside, don’t require Wind, Solar or Battery back-up to function 24/7/365.

This is fun. The logical thing to do would be to not build wind turbines to begin with, but who cares about logic when virtue is at stake? The next logical step would be to put blades in landfills because the volumes are very low compared to other waste. But what’s logic compared to virtue, so we will recycle the blades.

Recycling will happen, like it or not. Roughly 80% of the output will go to material that competes with existing commodities, and will sell at a loss of about $1/kg. The other 20% will become specialty product that might break even or maybe make a slight surplus if the lies they tell us actually come true.

All told, the blade recycling will add about 1/100th of a cent per kWh to the cost of wind power, by the calculations I ran through Claude a.i., in detail. Call it half a cent. What’s a half-cent for so much virtue? One more stupidity tax of so many others. LOL

Why did they mount the generator at the top of the blade tower with the blades.
Why not set up the generator on the ground on the concrete foundation and just run a drive shaft down to power the generator….like the old windmills did to pump water?

They were developed. They are called ‘vertical axis wind turbines’.

In service, they experienced very high outage rates from breakdowns and rapid breakdowns from mechanical stress. They turned out to have higher outage rates than conventional wind turbines.

I think he was referring to still having the same large tri-blade propellor, but using a bevel gear and long vertical shaft to drive a turbine at the base.

Using a shaft (or even a belt) to transmit the torque decreases the mechanical efficiency. Over the lifetime of the device, the losses are significant.

This scheme also increases the failure points of the mechanism. That is the reason many wind turbines now are direct drive instead of using gears.

A very sobering set of facts that energy and urban and national planners need to start assessing now, not when these worn-out items and materials need to be disposed of. By then it will be too late, and the only solution would seem to be a moratorium on new renewable construction, and a cessation of operation for those already in use.

Great essay Paul. I think there may be a typo: “Onshore wind turbine blades average 210 feet in length, 13 feet in height and 24 tons.” Maybe you mean 13 feet wide. A 210 foot blade would have to be mounted higher than that the avoid striking the ground.
