John Kerry targets agriculture as part of climate crusade

Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry warned Wednesday that the world can’t tackle climate change without first addressing the agriculture sector’s emissions.

Kerry lamented that agriculture production alone creates 33% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, arguing that reducing those emissions must be “front and center” in the quest to defeat global warming, during remarks Wednesday morning at the Department of Agriculture’s AIM for Climate Summit. The former secretary of state also touted so-called climate smart agriculture as a potential solution.

“A lot of people have no clue that agriculture contributes about 33% of all the emissions of the world,” he said during his keynote address. “We can’t get to net-zero, we don’t get this job done unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution. So all of us understand here the depths of this mission.”

“Food systems themselves contribute a significant amount of emissions just in the way in which we do the things we’ve been doing,” he continued. “With a growing population on the planet – we just crossed the threshold of 8 billion fellow citizens around the world – emissions from the food system alone are projected to cause another half a degree of warming by mid-century.”

Kerry added that “lives depend” on world leaders and scientists developing the tools necessary to lower agriculture emissions.

Overall, the global food system – which includes land-use change, actual agricultural production, packaging and waste management – generates about 18 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of 34% of total worldwide emissions, according to a March 2021 study published in the Nature Food journal.

In the U.S., though, agriculture alone generates about 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions, federal data showed.

“This sector needs innovation now more than ever,” Kerry continued Wednesday. “We’re facing record malnutrition at a time when agriculture, more than any other sector, is suffering from the impacts of the climate crisis. And I refuse to call it climate change anymore. It’s not change. It’s a crisis.”

“We need economic, social and policy innovation in order to scale adaptation of these technical solutions and get them into the hands of folks in the fields of small farmers on a worldwide basis. This is the promise of AIM for Climate Summit.”

Slashing farm emissions critical to fighting climate change, John Kerry says

WASHINGTON, May 10 (Reuters) – Cutting greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production is essential to the global fight against climate change, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said on Wednesday.

Agriculture generates 10% to 12% of greenhouse gas emissions globally, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The food system as a whole – including packaging, transportation, and waste management – generates a third of global emissions, according to a 2021 study published in the academic journal Nature Food.

“We can’t get to net zero, we don’t get this job done, unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution,” Kerry, the special presidential envoy for climate, said at the AIM for Climate summit in Washington.

He said that without cutting agricultural emissions, the world may not reach its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius – which scientists say must be achieved to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

President Joe Biden has pledged the U.S. will reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Rising global temperatures have severe implications for malnutrition and food security worldwide, Kerry said.

“A 2-degree future could result in another 600 million people not getting enough to eat,” said the former U.S. secretary of state. “You can’t continue to warm the planet while also expecting to feed it.”

AIM for Climate is a global initiative, co-led by the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates, to drive investment in farming practices that cut the sector’s emissions.

Major Livestock Producing Countries Commit to Mitigate Methane in Agriculture

Santiago, Chile – Today, the Global Methane Hub announced that agriculture and environment ministers and ambassadors from 13 countries, including the United States, have issued a commitment to reduce methane emissions in agriculture. Last month, the Global Methane Hub collaborated with the Ministries of Agriculture of Chile and Spain to convene the first-ever global ministerial on agricultural practices to reduce methane emissions.

“Mitigating methane is the fastest way to reduce warming in the short term. Food and agriculture can contribute to a low-methane future by improving farmer productivity and resilience. We welcome agriculture ministers participating in the implementation of the Global Methane Pledge,” said John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.

Often intentions are good. The evil manifests in the higher purpose. “Climate Change” fits that perfectly. It provides an excuse for every failure and dumb decision. I live in Victoria, Australia where Dictator Dan reigns supreme. He continues to enjoy popular support.

It is educational to reflect on the pandemic response in Australia, particularly Victoria. Was educational for me as it made clearer how autocrats take hold.

Under the emergency powers that the governments have given their bureaucracy, human rights no longer exist. The police force become the thugs of the ruling regime.

There has been a recent incident where a 95 year old, in her walking frame and “welding” a knife was tasered by police called to calm the situation. She is now in hospital on life support after collapsing from her walking frame. It must have been quite serious to involve the police but what level of thuggery is required to taser a 95yo in a walking frame?

“Climate Change” is now the higher purpose. It is the reason to subjugate and exploit the masses. It has been manufactured by the REALLY EVIL forces present within the UN. The UN is infested with failed politicians all seeking revenge on the stupid populace who did not recognise their brilliance. John Kerry is in that mould but directly funded through the US rather than UN. Kevin Rudd was UN envoy before becoming Australia’s US envoy.

The whole methane thing is scientifically absurd. Yes, in the lab in a standard dry atmosphere methane is a potent GHG. But in the real world, water vapor averages about 2% of the atmosphere (blue planet, 71% ocean, clouds and rain…). And the methane IR absorption bands are completely overlapped by the much more abundant water vapor IR absorption bands. So methane has no actual GHE whatsoever. Kerry is an idiot espousing a false narrative.

And the water vapor is increased by warmer oceans. And it increasingly looks like what has been warming the oceans is linked to an increase in seismic activity at the bottom of the sea. IE: Lava. So, in fact, what has been slightly warming the world is a bottom-up and not top-down dynamic. But the joke is funnier when you realize the warmer oceans increase water vapor in the atmosphere, which lessens the effects CO2 and Methane can have.

A liar like Kerry can jet set around the world while Truth is just getting its pants on in the morning. But those pants do eventually get worn by Truth. Kerry does not wear the pants in his situation. And with painful slowness more and more people are starting to see though him and his pals. More and more people roll their eyes when he speaks. He must be noticing all the eyes rolling. It must be a very uncomfortable situation, and I’d feel sorrier for him if he didn’t so deeply deserve it.

Reply to  Rud Istvan
May 21, 2023 2:08 pm

Rud, it must be more complicated than overlapping absorption bands; perhaps the methane is in a layer above the water vapour layer (??) . Even papers that suggest that the impact of cutting methane emissions maybe less than was ‘initially thought’ are not suggesting that the LW forcing is less. Eg:
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-023-01144-z

I have no idea why the forcing is so high (given the overlapping bands) but there must be a counterintuitive reason.

Kerry is just the committed idiot. The real culprits are his facilitators — the scientists and scientific societies that lend credibility to malignant nonsense.

On their heads go the blame — the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Physics, NOAA.

People in these places are well-trained enough to figure out there’s no scientific standing to the AGW claim. But they actively collude in the deception. They knowingly justify the partisan extreme.

And also that the methane produced by ruminant livestock would otherwise be produced by bacteria in the soil as the grass decomposes. Grass which grew by absorbing CO2 mere months earlier. The push to destroy livestock farming ignores one side of the equation and only focuses on the supposed negatives and only those produced by the productive human endeavour. The people behind this are against life itself.

The climate alarmists state that methane absorbs 20 times more IR radiation per unit mass than CO2. But methane concentrations in the air are only about 1.8 ppm, as compared to 410 ppm for CO2. Also, methane has a molecular weight of 16, as compared to 44 for CO2, so that the total IR radiation absorbed by methane would be 20 * 16 * 1.8 / (44 * 410) = 0.032 times (3.2%) that of CO2.

With regard to “global warming”, CO2 absorbs over 30 times more IR radiation than methane, and CO2 itself is a minor contributor compared to water vapor.

If John Kerry really wants to eliminate “global warming”, he should figure out a way to prevent water from evaporating from the oceans. Good luck with that!

CO2 IS A LIFE GAS; NO CO2 = NO FLORA AND NO FAUNA
https://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/co2-is-a-life-gas-no-co2-no-life

Increased CO2 is a Boon for Biomass Growth Worth Many $Billions

The CO2 radiative driving force, with 412 ppm is about 2.0 W/m2. It varies up and down very little.
The radiative driving force for clouds and water vapor is about 120 W/m2. It varies up and down very much.
CO2 is just a tiny actor regarding global warming.
Even, if CO2 ppm were to double, which would use up all fossil fuel, the additional driving force would be minimal, as shown in below graph at the bottom of Appendix 4

CO2 has increased crop yields, and plant growth and helped feed the world
It has thickened the forests, increased mangroves, and reduced desertification (Goklany, 2015)
There are 18 million more square kilometers of greenery in the world (Zaichun, 2016).
If temperatures increase two degrees, and CO2 hits 700 ppm, corn is estimated to grow 25% faster and soy beans will boom by 31%. (Qiao et al 2019)
Let’s burn coal, oil and gas and feed the world.
See Images
The more CO2 in greenhouses and the environment, the more biomass growth

Carbon dioxide fertilization (in ppm, horizontal axes) of C3 crop and C4 weed

.
About 90% of 700 Pacific and Indian ocean are growing more than shrinking (Duvat…, and the 11% that are shrinking are too small to have human inhabitants.

Third World folks are happy with cars, trucks, electricity, antibiotics, gas and planes.
They like the West’s fertilizer, polyester-cotton, concrete, sealed roads and smart phones.
The game of retrospective “loss and damage” can be played by both sides.

As Jacob Rees-Mogg says:

“There is no need to pay reparations.
Our leadership of the industrial revolution brought prosperity to the world and led to increased life expectancy and better living conditions.”
As CO2 increased, the population of Africa expanded from 155 million one hundred years ago, to 1,500 million now. A billion more African lives…

There probably is a crisis we hear about species facing extinction and catastrophic decline of insects. To me its not credible that this has been caused by the mild warming but agriculture certainly needs thinking about

Fertilizers, co2 and machinery means farming has become so efficient that farmland is returned to the wild as it’s not needed.
If we go renewable with wind solar and biofuels that will destroy all that is left and cause the 6th extinction.

“Food and agriculture can contribute to a low-methane future by improving farmer productivity and resilience.”

I see this sort of idiocy all the time regarding forestry- yet, they can never really say how to improve productivity- what they mean is stop agriculture and forestry. Electric tractors and harvesting machines? Sure, I guess they don’t know that when its necessary, some farmers will drive those machines many more hours than batteries could power them- right through the night. So, just cut back on that work? And they claim to worry about people starving in the future?

Petroleum based fertilizers and genetic modified grains have already vastly improved farmer productivity. So have large scale fossil fueled farm equipment.
Guess which of the above 3 are opposed by the Climate Alarmists? (Only 3 guesses)

As my mother used to say, “3 guesses, and the last 2 don’t count.”

The answer is, all 3.

I just watched a YouTube video about how the UK’s military is virtually crippled. It drastically slashed its defense spending when the Soviet Union collapsed. But instead of rebuilding it- it’s going to spend a fortune for “clean and green” energy.
