John Kerry targets agriculture as part of climate crusade

Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry warned Wednesday that the world can’t tackle climate change without first addressing the agriculture sector’s emissions.

Kerry lamented that agriculture production alone creates 33% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, arguing that reducing those emissions must be “front and center” in the quest to defeat global warming, during remarks Wednesday morning at the Department of Agriculture’s AIM for Climate Summit. The former secretary of state also touted so-called climate smart agriculture as a potential solution.

“A lot of people have no clue that agriculture contributes about 33% of all the emissions of the world,” he said during his keynote address. “We can’t get to net-zero, we don’t get this job done unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution. So all of us understand here the depths of this mission.”

“Food systems themselves contribute a significant amount of emissions just in the way in which we do the things we’ve been doing,” he continued. “With a growing population on the planet – we just crossed the threshold of 8 billion fellow citizens around the world – emissions from the food system alone are projected to cause another half a degree of warming by mid-century.”

Kerry added that “lives depend” on world leaders and scientists developing the tools necessary to lower agriculture emissions.

Overall, the global food system – which includes land-use change, actual agricultural production, packaging and waste management – generates about 18 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of 34% of total worldwide emissions, according to a March 2021 study published in the Nature Food journal.

In the U.S., though, agriculture alone generates about 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions, federal data showed.

“This sector needs innovation now more than ever,” Kerry continued Wednesday. “We’re facing record malnutrition at a time when agriculture, more than any other sector, is suffering from the impacts of the climate crisis. And I refuse to call it climate change anymore. It’s not change. It’s a crisis.”

“We need economic, social and policy innovation in order to scale adaptation of these technical solutions and get them into the hands of folks in the fields of small farmers on a worldwide basis. This is the promise of AIM for Climate Summit.”

Slashing farm emissions critical to fighting climate change, John Kerry says

WASHINGTON, May 10 (Reuters) – Cutting greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production is essential to the global fight against climate change, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said on Wednesday.

Agriculture generates 10% to 12% of greenhouse gas emissions globally, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The food system as a whole – including packaging, transportation, and waste management – generates a third of global emissions, according to a 2021 study published in the academic journal Nature Food.

“We can’t get to net zero, we don’t get this job done, unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution,” Kerry, the special presidential envoy for climate, said at the AIM for Climate summit in Washington.

He said that without cutting agricultural emissions, the world may not reach its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius – which scientists say must be achieved to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

President Joe Biden has pledged the U.S. will reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Rising global temperatures have severe implications for malnutrition and food security worldwide, Kerry said.

“A 2-degree future could result in another 600 million people not getting enough to eat,” said the former U.S. secretary of state. “You can’t continue to warm the planet while also expecting to feed it.”

AIM for Climate is a global initiative, co-led by the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates, to drive investment in farming practices that cut the sector’s emissions.

Major Livestock Producing Countries Commit to Mitigate Methane in Agriculture

Santiago, Chile – Today, the Global Methane Hub announced that agriculture and environment ministers and ambassadors from 13 countries, including the United States, have issued a commitment to reduce methane emissions in agriculture. Last month, the Global Methane Hub collaborated with the Ministries of Agriculture of Chile and Spain to convene the first-ever global ministerial on agricultural practices to reduce methane emissions.

“Mitigating methane is the fastest way to reduce warming in the short term. Food and agriculture can contribute to a low-methane future by improving farmer productivity and resilience. We welcome agriculture ministers participating in the implementation of the Global Methane Pledge,” said John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.

He somehow managed to find them, so that he could wear them to the recent coronation!

On top of that, it was more important for him to fly to a coronation ceremony than for several hundred poor peasants to grow enough crops this year to feed their families.

There are a lot of easily influenced people in this old world.

If the Influencer they are listening to has evil political intentions, then bad things are going to happen from believing the lies and distortions told by the Influencers.

Often intentions are good. The evil manifests in the higher purpose. “Climate Change” fits that perfectly. It provides an excuse for every failure and dumb decision. It provides the reason to subjugate and exploit. The higher purpose underpins the hypocrisy – you cannot do GOD’S work without due compensation.

I live in Victoria, Australia where Dictator Dan reigns supreme. He continues to enjoy popular support.

It is educational to reflect on the pandemic response in Australia, particularly Victoria. Was educational for me as it made clearer how autocrats take hold.

Under the emergency powers that the governments have given their bureaucracy, human rights no longer exist. The police force become the thugs of the ruling regime.

There has been a recent incident where a 95 year old, in her walking frame and “welding” a knife was tasered by police called to calm the situation. She is now in hospital on life support after collapsing from her walking frame. It must have been quite serious to involve the police but what level of thuggery is required to taser a 95yo in a walking frame?

“Climate Change” is now the higher purpose. It is the reason to subjugate and exploit the masses. It has been manufactured by the REALLY EVIL forces present within the UN. The UN is infested with failed politicians all seeking revenge on the stupid populace who did not recognise their brilliance. John Kerry is in that mould but directly funded through the US rather than UN. Kevin Rudd was UN envoy before becoming Australia’s US envoy.

The whole methane thing is scientifically absurd. Yes, in the lab in a standard dry atmosphere methane is a potent GHG. But in the real world, water vapor averages about 2% of the atmosphere (blue planet, 71% ocean, clouds and rain…). And the methane IR absorption bands are completely overlapped by the much more abundant water vapor IR absorption bands. So methane has no actual GHE whatsoever. Kerry is an idiot espousing a false narrative.

And the water vapor is increased by warmer oceans. And it increasingly looks like what has been warming the oceans is linked to an increase in seismic activity at the bottom of the sea. IE: Lava. So, in fact, what has been slightly warming the world is a bottom-up and not top-down dynamic. But the joke is funnier when you realize the warmer oceans increase water vapor in the atmosphere, which lessens the effects CO2 and Methane can have.

A liar like Kerry can jet set around the world while Truth is just getting its pants on in the morning. But those pants do eventually get worn by Truth. Kerry does not wear the pants in his situation. And with painful slowness more and more people are starting to see though him and his pals. More and more people roll their eyes when he speaks. He must be noticing all the eyes rolling. It must be a very uncomfortable situation, and I’d feel sorrier for him if he didn’t so deeply deserve it.

Chas
Reply to  Rud Istvan

Rud, it must be more complicated than overlapping absorption bands; perhaps the methane is in a layer above the water vapour layer (??) . Even papers that suggest that the impact of cutting methane emissions maybe less than was ‘initially thought’ are not suggesting that the LW forcing is less. Eg:
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-023-01144-z

I have no idea why the forcing is so high (given the overlapping bands) but there must be a counterintuitive reason.

Kerry is just the committed idiot. The real culprits are his facilitators — the scientists and scientific societies that lend credibility to malignant nonsense.

On their heads go the blame — the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Physics, NOAA.

People in these places are well-trained enough to figure out there’s no scientific standing to the AGW claim. But they actively collude in the deception. They knowingly justify the partisan extreme.

The crime is well beyond incompetence or even malfeasance. These people and those groups are complicit in mass murder.

And also that the methane produced by ruminant livestock would otherwise be produced by bacteria in the soil as the grass decomposes. Grass which grew by absorbing CO2 mere months earlier. The push to destroy livestock farming ignores one side of the equation and only focuses on the supposed negatives and only those produced by the productive human endeavour. The people behind this are against life itself.

The climate alarmists state that methane absorbs 20 times more IR radiation per unit mass than CO2. But methane concentrations in the air are only about 1.8 ppm, as compared to 410 ppm for CO2. Also, methane has a molecular weight of 16, as compared to 44 for CO2, so that the total IR radiation absorbed by methane would be 20 * 16 * 1.8 / (44 * 410) = 0.032 times (3.2%) that of CO2.

With regard to “global warming”, CO2 absorbs over 30 times more IR radiation than methane, and CO2 itself is a minor contributor compared to water vapor.

If John Kerry really wants to eliminate “global warming”, he should figure out a way to prevent water from evaporating from the oceans. Good luck with that!

CO2 IS A LIFE GAS; NO CO2 = NO FLORA AND NO FAUNA
https://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/co2-is-a-life-gas-no-co2-no-life

Increased CO2 is a Boon for Biomass Growth Worth Many $Billions

The CO2 radiative driving force, with 412 ppm is about 2.0 W/m2. It varies up and down very little.
The radiative driving force for clouds and water vapor is about 120 W/m2. It varies up and down very much.
CO2 is just a tiny actor regarding global warming.
Even, if CO2 ppm were to double, which would use up all fossil fuel, the additional driving force would be minimal, as shown in below graph at the bottom of Appendix 4

CO2 has increased crop yields, and plant growth and helped feed the world
It has thickened the forests, increased mangroves, and reduced desertification (Goklany, 2015)
There are 18 million more square kilometers of greenery in the world (Zaichun, 2016).
If temperatures increase two degrees, and CO2 hits 700 ppm, corn is estimated to grow 25% faster and soy beans will boom by 31%. (Qiao et al 2019)
Let’s burn coal, oil and gas and feed the world.
See Images
The more CO2 in greenhouses and the environment, the more biomass growth

Carbon dioxide fertilization (in ppm, horizontal axes) of C3 crop and C4 weed

.
About 90% of 700 Pacific and Indian ocean are growing more than shrinking (Duvat…, and the 11% that are shrinking are too small to have human inhabitants.

Third World folks are happy with cars, trucks, electricity, antibiotics, gas and planes.
They like the West’s fertilizer, polyester-cotton, concrete, sealed roads and smart phones.
The game of retrospective “loss and damage” can be played by both sides.

As Jacob Rees-Mogg says:

“There is no need to pay reparations.
Our leadership of the industrial revolution brought prosperity to the world and led to increased life expectancy and better living conditions.”
As CO2 increased, the population of Africa expanded from 155 million one hundred years ago, to 1,500 million now. A billion more African lives…

Fertilizers, co2 and machinery means farming has become so efficient that farmland is returned to the wild as it’s not needed.

“Food and agriculture can contribute to a low-methane future by improving farmer productivity and resilience.”

I see this sort of idiocy all the time regarding forestry- yet, they can never really say how to improve productivity- what they mean is stop agriculture and forestry. Electric tractors and harvesting machines? Sure, I guess they don’t know that when its necessary, some farmers will drive those machines many more hours than batteries could power them- right through the night. So, just cut back on that work? And they claim to worry about people starving in the future?

“A 2-degree future could result in another 600 million people not getting enough to eat,” said the former U.S. secretary of state. “You can’t continue to warm the planet while also expecting to feed it.”
Just another example of the “cure” being far worse than the “disease” – especially when the disease doesn’t exist! If Lurch thinks that people will starve if the planet warms by 2 degrees, just wait until farmers are prevented from growing enough food to feed the earth’s population. All because of an imaginary crisis.

You are jumping to quite a conclusion, Peta of Newark. Warmer temperatures don’t create a desert in the Congo, do they? Warmer temperatures often increase humidity, and that often leads to increased rainfall. It depends on the locale, and parts of the Mid-east and even the Sahara saw lush times in the past, during warmer “climate optimums”. In Syria there are magnificent bridges built by the Romans over rivers that don’t exist any more.

Warmer temperatures are not a cause of deserts, it’s the other way round: deserts cause higher (and lower) temperatures. Deserts are caused by lack of rainfall, but lower CO2 levels can also contribute to them. Another 2 or more degrees C of global warming would dramatically increase Canada and Russia’s potential for food production, and thus the world’s too.

We have E-Fuels coming, so why not E-Food. Convert all farmland to solar panels and make food from CO2 via Direct Air Capture. How hard can that be? You can make methanol, ethanol, hydrocarbons and so much more via solar power, so food should be trivial.
And look, there is no destruction of habitat or any other drawbacks to solar. Just see this article: How solar farms took over the California desert: ‘An oasis has become a dead sea’ (msn.com).
So, save the desert, convert farmland to solar panels. And you can even put windmills on top of solar fields and get a double whammy out of the land. What could be better than that. And if we are to electrify everything, this simply must be done. Thus, the need to demonize farming so that we can justify conversion to solar fields.

The devil is in the details. I’d like to see exactly what practices Kerry is saying
the small farmers need to adopt. I recall a few years ago a neighbor rigged
up a flexible metal tube from his tractor’s exhaust and routed it to his tillage implement,
putting the exhaust in the ground. He claimed it would help fertilize the soil.
I tried not to laugh but couldn’t help it. I think he got some kind of a
tax break for doing that. He goes to a a lot of farm practices forums and is
cutting edge in a lot of ways.

Here is a link to a state of the art dairy farm in MN. 8800 cows under one roof, 20 acre
barn. You wouldn’t want one of these to be build upwind from your house. They capture
the methane from the manure and run a generator off it to provide all the power used.
Not much English spoken there, all workers from top to bottom are Spanish speaking
and live on site. That area brought in Mexican labor in the 90’s then the Muslims later
at the Jennie-O’s turkey plant.

When you drive by these “food factories” along the highway you can
“smell the money” miles away. After the MeadowStar was built I read
there were a dozen or so built in a 50+ mile radius in that area.
After 9-11 the potato growers in S Idaho went under and now there
are multiple dairies like these minus the buildings along the highway
producing milk for CA I’ve been told. Poultry and Pork are much
the same also.

I think Kerry and his group want to kill the small players and
have these factory’s replace the small producer, it will give them
more control over the population. Might be why the border has
been so open.

It is pretty technically and financially inept to chase methane very hard, other than to place a value on it as a fuel (which it already has) and to burn it to CO2 if it must be released when the source is sufficiently concentrated (cow flatulence is not).

Draw a vertical line through the CH4 absorption peaks, 3.3 and 7.7 microns….ooops masked by water vapor and nitrogen oxides at 7.7, while at 3.3 microns incoming SW has little energy. So 95% junk science. It is actually indirect proof that propaganda is being used to enable rent seekers to control consumption, industries, and taxation.

Although I am not American, I feel entitled to criticize “The United States special presidential envoy for climate”, John Kerry, since he put my country in the same bag of emitters (non-emitter, in our case).

He speaks without having the slightest idea of what he is talking about. For instance, clueless Kerry states that agriculture emits methane, which is false. Cows do and that is called livestock.

Is it that he doesn’t know or doesn’t care about the disaster that his same destructive policies have wrought in the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and, sooner than later, in Germany, and that he now wants to impose in his own country seeking for support in thirteen other lackey Marxist nations? At least, Mr. Kerry, be polite and mind your own business as we’ve had more than enough with your friend you invited out for beers in Canada, the so-called “president”, drug addict, thief and communist who has led us to economic collapse and, out of control drug trafficking, immigration and terrorism. He, your friend, deeply supports you.

Does Mr. Kerry now want to go even further down the path of economic destruction adding food shortages, skyrocketing food prices and famine in America because of the imperceptible, negligible, harmless and short-life traces of nitrous oxide and methane?

I understand that fostering, encouraging and promoting genocide is punishable by crimes against humanity, which is what Mr. Kerry is precisely doing as he goes ahead with his totalitarian Communist-UN agenda and his perverted and perverse net-zero fantasy.

At the limit that green madness has reached, not only the USA, but the entire West urgently needs Donald Trump back in office, whether we like him or not.

I do because I believe and trust in facts and in promises kept. So, would you be so kind as to lend us your former president even for just one day?

Thank you.

I have to take issue with this continuous attack on agricultural methane emissions.
I made submissions in person at a select committee hearing in New Zealand on a proposed ZERO Carbon Act of Parliament.
I showed graphs of world atmosphere methane emissions which showed that between 1999 and 2008 methane emissions were stable with no increase for ten years .
Enteric emissions from farmed livestock were of no problem and neither was any other source of methane emissions such as coal mining.
They took no notice of the data that I showed them and I was asked to sum up what I had presented to them .
I looked them in their eyes and told them that history would judge them .
How could so many people come to believe that enteric methane could ever be a danger to the world .
All fodder that farmed cattle ,sheep and goats consume has absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere .
The very small amount of methane expelled during digestion breaks down in 10 years into water vapour and CO2 in the upper atmosphere .
The process is a closed cycle , not one additional atom or molecule containing carbon ‘CO2 or CH4’ is added to the atmosphere .
The fodder that is eaten contains a lot of cellulose which is indigestible to humans but farmed animals consume it and produce nutritious food to feed the world ,Milk, beef ,lamb ,venison and goat meat.
Also how much fossil fuel would be required to replace all the leather and woollen goods ?

According to his graph, the world’s use of nitrogen fertilizers is about 12 teragrams per year, while corn yields are about 7 times 1866 levels, and wheat yields are about 4 times 1866 levels.

A teragram is a trillion grams, or one million metric tonnes. It is true that fossil fuels need to be burned to produce fertilizer, which emits CO2, but even if it took 10 tons of CO2 to produce one ton of fertilizer, this would represent an emission of 120 million tonnes per year of CO2.

World anthropogenic CO2 emissions are about 35 billion, or 35,000 million tonnes per year, so that the CO2 from producing fertilizer would only represent 0.34% of the total CO2 emissions. If they’re trying to avoid 1.5 C of “global warming”, the fertilizer would account for 0.005 C.

So all the governmental pressure to cut the use of fertilizer in some countries could, at most, reduce CO2 emissions by less than 1%, but could reduce wheat production by 75%.

Back during the French revolution, people complained about not having bread to eat, and Queen Marie Antoinette replied, “Let them eat brioche”. What some European governments are doing is even worse, since wheat is still required to make brioche. What do they propose that people eat, just to make the world 0.005 C cooler 100 years from now?

They seem to be going on about some of the nitrates and nitrites in the soil breaking down to N2O as well.
