Australia’s Lismore court accepted a Section 14 Mental Health defence – not guilty due to cognitive impairment or mental health issues.
Blockade Australia Activist Mali Cooper Has Charges Dropped After Sydney Harbour Tunnel Protest
by CHARLES RUSHFORTH 27 SEPTEMBER 2022
…
Lismore local Mali Cooper was charged with wilfully preventing free passage of vehicles after locking herself in a car in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel during peak hour traffic in June.
Livestreaming the ensuing chaos as traffic banked up either side of her, Cooper stated the rationale behind the disruptive action was to enact systemic change after witnessing the devastation of the Lismore floods.
…
Before 2022, Cooper’s offence would normally impose a maximum penalty of $440, but after changes to protest laws in NSW — specifically designed to target climate protesters — these penalties were increased to $22,000, or jail time of up to two years.
Facing these penalties at Lismore local court this morning, Cooper had all of the charges against her squashed by magistrates under a section 14 mental health order.

Are climate extremists like Cooper too delusional to face court? Arguably they are – people who genuinely believe the world is about to end may be incapable of rationally evaluating the consequences of their actions. What criminal act of salvation would be unacceptable if the world truly stood on the brink of destruction?
But the courts have a duty to protect the public, when someone’s mental impairment leads them to commit crimes. Blockade Australia claims Cooper has indicated she still believes in the climate crisis and direct action.
Let us hope Cooper receives proper psychological treatment for her climate mental health issues, and lets also hope any court appointed mental health providers take steps to protect the public from her harmful behaviour, otherwise there is a risk climate extremists like Cooper might see this case dismissal as a free pass to continue acting out their climate warrior fantasies.
Update (EW): While researching the Section 14 mental health defence, I noticed a lot of advertisements from State of New South Wales lawyers offering what appears to be an express service, for people to claim Section 14 if they are busted drink driving, smoking drugs or committing antisocial acts.

Global warming activists are loony tunes.
I can agree with that.
Put her involuntarily in a mental asylum until better or dead.
The “cognitive impairment or mental health issues” excuse is like the “dog ate my homework” excuse of a lazy school boy. Only the dumbest teacher would accept it.
Free passes for all…
Most charges against Portland protesters won’t be prosecuted: DA (nypost.com)
Well, now I know what I have to state if I am in NSW and I am committing any crime: I see my town being destroyed by climate disaster
🙂
We need to open an Arkham to house these loonies.
Mali Cooper is clearly a loony and society needs to be protected from her anti-social activities. She needs proper psychological treatment for her climate mental health issues.
If she is sane (and she surely is [*]) then Mali Cooper should herself appeal against the finding.
[*]-Misguided, yes. Brainwashed, possibly. But sane, yes.
She means nothing to me, lock her up and throw away the key.
“Let us hope Cooper receives proper psychological treatment for her climate mental health issues”
There is no proper treatment. This is willful ignorance, plain and simple.
I worry that this court decision can be taken the way I think the defence intended…
“Climate Change” [supposedly somehow] caused a traumatic destruction of a town by flooding it.
This person’s mental health was harmed as a direct result of witnessing the effects [supposedly] of “Climate Change”.
And therefore S14 can be applied in defense of any and all actions by anyone who is [conned into] believing that something traumatic that has happened before is instead something that Climate Change did,
AND [conned into] believing that something humans produce a little of [in comparison to natural sources] is somehow causing climate related events [all of them, including the ones that are not even “changes”],
AND by some utterly distorted [S14] reasoning is [conned into] believing that disruptive actions that cause cost and trauma to others [possibly life threatening if any ambulance was blocked] will result in fixing the whole problem [using solar panels and exploding lithium batteries].
Seems like a sound diagnosis, where’s she being committed?
In 1969, a low-flying aircraft with radiation detectors discovered one of the world’s premiuym uranium mines. I was part of the team soon after. Together, we developed the Ranger Uranium Mine, Orebodies Number 1 and 3. There was emerging evidence that more mines could be found.
Because activists destroyed my uranium province, we now have the huge Jabiluka deposit nearby sitting there untouched. I was at Jabiluke the day it was discovered, so I have a heartstring interest in it.
These big uranium deposits are worth tens of billions of $$$ apiece. When a country seeks to divert effort to the production of new wealth, then mining is one option. Sadly, those Australian politicians wearing dunce caps who profess to be wise about our future are being so incredibly dumb that they favour the largely incoherent mutterings of a few stray aborigines and their academic advisors who say there is value in preserving the traditions and myths of the aborigines. Mates, I have been there and there are bugger all original traditions. What is touted today as the prime reason to stop more uranium mining is stories concocted by largely socialist academics since the 1940s and their dishonest creative minds.
This girl Mali laments the damage from a flood. The blames fossil fuel burning rather than silly people building homes where floods are known. She thinks the damage to a few dozen homes is as big a loss as the loss of a couple of new big multi-billion dollar mines that she and her ilk stole from us.
I would support a finding of mental incompetence, but would note that it is more widespread than ordinary folk imagine.

That vacant stare! They protest showed that an empty vessel can make a lot of noise.

For her treatment, she should be compelled to take the following courses. Physics, mathematics and science.

Now if only our political leaders can be diagnosed for their climate policy insanity, we might see some progress!
