Climate Nuttiness: IPCC Scientist Peter Kalmus Unglued (‘Scientist Rebellion’ a dud)

From MasterResource

By Robert Bradley Jr. — June 3, 2022

“I suspect fossil fuel leaders were surprised and amazed that their frankly evil plan worked beyond their wildest dreams…. This is NOT to let the fossil fuel leaders off the hook. Far from it, they should be in prison (not climate activists!).” (- P. Kalmus, below)

The climate nuts hurt their cause as much or more than they help it. And their own words doom them to ridicule and irrelevance.

Enter Peter Kalmus, a climate scientist making a living at taxpayer expense. He has been a go-to voice regarding the April 6, 2022, “Scientist Rebellion” event where over 1,000 scientists in 26 countries risked arrest to “warn the world.”

Kalmus glued himself to the entrance of Los Angeles’s Chase Bank headquarters and got arrested. The story is told here:

“The scientists of the world are being ignored and it’s got to stop,” said Peter Kalmus, a California-based father of two and NASA climate scientist. “We’re going to lose everything. We’re not joking. We’re not lying and we’re not exaggerating.”

Kalmus delivered an emotional plea at the doorway of the JP Morgan Chase building in downtown Los Angeles. He was arrested with colleagues who chained themselves to the bank’s doors. Kalmus wrote an op-ed about his experience for The Guardian [excerpted below].

“If everyone could see what I see coming,” Kalmus wrote, “society would switch into climate emergency mode and end fossil fuels in just a few years.”

Problem is that Kalmus is an outlier–a politico in science clothing. Rational, sober, open-minded scientists see his dire views as iffy–and at odds with pubic policy in a rational world. He does not understand such fundamentals as energy density and intermittency–and he seems to not want to acknowledge the case for global lukewarming and benefits of CO2 emissions.

Twitter Rants

Peter Kalmus is angry and disillusioned (the world does not believe his spiel) on social media:

“When there is no policy or regulation to speak of but ‘the market’ after a while you end up with a completely fucked up society like the US.” (April 19, 2022)

“I just really wanted everyone to know that scientists around the world are so desperate for society to treat Earth breakdown as the emergency it is that they are increasingly willing to take significant risks.” April 19, 2022

“At some point you will agree with me that Earth breakdown is such an emergency that we can’t have commercial aviation until we can do so without fossil fuels. Would be pretty great if you could agree nowish so we can get on with shifting fossil fuel culture & transforming society.” April 18, 2022

“The IPCC WG3 report was SUCH a clear warning, and because of it UN Secretary General @antonioguterres has been essentially begging for the people of the world to rebel as governments insanely expand fossil fuels – and he’s quite correct. Rebellion now is the most rational choice.” April 19, 2022

“Oh fuck it’s almost Earth day again. let me know when world leaders get their heads out of their asses and do something.” April 18, 2022

“I honestly don’t care if you recycle or not, I want you to engage in or support those who in engage in climate disobedience.” April 16, 2022

“I suspect fossil fuel leaders were surprised and amazed that their frankly evil plan worked beyond their wildest dreams. The key to their unfortunate success was this failure to report the impending climate emergency, the greatest journalistic failure in history.” April 16, 2022

“This is NOT to let the fossil fuel leaders off the hook. Far from it, they should be in prison (not climate activists!).” April 16, 2022

Here are quotations from his Guardian article

I’m a climate scientist and a desperate father. How can I plead any harder? What will it take? What can my colleagues and I do to stop this catastrophe unfolding now all around us with such excruciating clarity?

…. We chose JP Morgan Chase because out of all the investment banks in the world, JP Morgan Chase funds the most new fossil fuel projects….

Even limiting heating to below 2°C, a level of heating that in my opinion could threaten civilization as we know it, would require emissions to peak before 2025….

Earth breakdown is much worse than most people realize…. It’s so surreal that I often find myself reviewing the science to make sure it’s really happening, a sort of scientific nightmare arm-pinch. Yes, it’s really happening.

Of course he is doing his glue jobs for us, not himself ….

I hate being the Cassandra. I’d rather just be with my family and do science. But I feel morally compelled to sound the alarm. By the time I switched from astrophysics into Earth science in 2012, I’d realized that facts alone were not persuading world leaders to take action….

Nothing has worked. It’s now the eleventh hour and I feel terrified for my kids, and terrified for humanity. I feel deep grief over the loss of forests and corals and diminishing biodiversity. But I’ll keep fighting as hard as I can for this Earth, no matter how bad it gets, because it can always get worse. And it will continue to get worse until we end the fossil fuel industry and the exponential quest for ever more profit at the expense of everything else.

What can the rational say to one Peter Kalmus?

And finally, avoid hunger strikes and self-immolation. Don’t pull a David Buckel, please. And if your civil disobedience turns into a felony conviction, please leave the taxpayer dole in the best interest for us taxpayers.

“If everyone could see what I see coming,” Kalmus wrote, “society would switch into climate emergency mode and end fossil’

This is close to what was said by many climate scientists whose careers were ended by what was popularly termed the “Climate Blues” (CB) back about a dozen yrs ago. It occurred under the stresses of climategate revelations and the realization of the ‘Dreaded Pause’ which had reached 10yrs and continued year by year agonizingly for another 8yrs until interrupted by the 2015 el Niño (NOAAs Tom Karl actually ended it before this by massive T adjustments – a last act before retiring).

Ironically the real psychological term is d*nial!

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/in-depth/denial/art-20047926

Imagine you’ve completed 8yrs of university study for obtaining your PhD in Climate Science and and are 10yrs into your career, believing that Crisis Human Caused Global Warming from CO2 is going to wreck the planet. Suddenly the warming stops and CO2 emissions are accelerating, yet, the earth is rapidly greening (increased habitat for diversity and bumper crops) and all forecasts of climate disaster have failed miserably. Polar bears, tigers, penguins…doing well. Half your science life is over and there is no crisis. You have been totally wrongheaded. Bingo!

When looking at the YouTube video of Kalmus glueing himself to the bank door and listening to what he is saying, I too wonder if he as some kind of personality disorder. I suppose that suggesting to him that he might have one is easier said than done even with his gloom-and-doom hysterical rants.

If he is a candidate for the psychologist’s couch, it begs the question of whether he should even be on the federal payroll.

So the real problem is social media – kids especially are exposed to climate bullshit, and are thusly influenced into believing the lies, and they become anxious and obnoxious. Before social media, there were no climate problems, ergo, social media is the problem. Same for several other contemporary, negative social issues. When a smartphone takes up 90% of your waking day, its going to have its negative impacts.

You are most likely correct but the Force has long been with us. I recall, after graduating college in 1970, becoming a Flaming Liberal. Fortunately, I went into social work, in big city projects, and reality, eventually, hit me in the face. I’m embarassed to say how long it took me to recover my sanity. My parents, life-long Blue Dog Democrats had the sense to vote for Reagan. It took me until 1992 and the Clintons to recover mine and see reality. Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.

KeTaz, me too. You and are are about the same age. College aged kids are idealistic and naive, and it was around our time frame, I think, that liberals recognized that, and over the next decade really began to work it. I caught on in the 80s with media claiming this crisis and that crisis twice a week. If something is a crisis, it continues, but the media had two new crises every week. Old crises don’t get attention. Media motto: “If it bleeds, it leads”. And then they hit on Climate; the perfect liberal noble cause for indoctrination.

From Wikipedia: “… received his PhD in physics in 2008.[5] His PhD work involved searching for gravitational wavesRecently, Kalmus has begun to work in the nascent field of ecological forecasting [models].”

And from NASA: “Peter came to JPL Earth Science [in 2012 according to his Linkedin account] from astrophysics, where he spent eight years designing and implementing searches for gravitational waves from supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and magnetars as a member of the LIGO collaboration. He now [from 2020] uses remote sensing data to study biodiversity, stratocumulus clouds (which cool the Earth), and severe convective environments as a member of JPL’s Science Data Modeling and Computing Group.” [Emphasis added.]

Kalmus’ first reported JPL work concerning clouds came in late 2014. According to Wikipedia, since 2019 all reports by and about him have been exclusively related to his activism.

Nothing in his education or science work qualifies him to pontificate on the Earth’s demise. Its models, models, models all the way down with him.

I refer (normally rational) folks that have been duped into this “emergency” claim, to this.

I was driving Friday flicking through XM channels, was listening to another talking head on Fox 115, she read a piece from NASA or NOAA that officially co2 in may hit 421 ppm, a point not seen in 4 million years.
OMG
Then she added that the temps 4million years ago were 7C warmer, saying that we are in trouble.

Do people just not think anymore?
If co2 levels are now the same why is it 7C cooler today?
Shouldn’t it be 7 warmer if co2 controls temps?

Just no capability for logical thought

It’s hard to think logically when you’re a cult member of the first church of the boiling globe.

Let’s see, I look around me and see a large amount of life, including me, so obviously our antecedents all survived this calamitous 7C warmer period. And here they are all worried about 1.5…(of course they are really worried we will all catch on and they won’t be able to subjugate us all to their will!)

“I just really wanted everyone to know that scientists around the world are so desperate for society to treat Earth breakdown as the emergency it is that they are increasingly willing to take significant risks.” “

Real question: Have any ‘scientists’ chained or glued themselves to the private jets or yachts owned by the very wealthy/billionaires?

Or in developing countries such as China and India?

Yeah, not a mention of China or India and their increasing CO2 production, by Mr. Kalmus. Shouldn’t he be over there crying on their doorstep if he wants CO2 reduced?

A. Marxists decide the only way to defeat Capitalism is to declare its’ energy source, fossil fuels, a poison to humanity. B. To promote their plan they enlist politicians, media, and some scientists to be their useful idiots. C. The useful idiots become so involved with their quest to save humanity from extinction the Marxists (A.) leave them on their own to spread mayhem. D. We now have a self generating plan, populated by a minority of useful idiots supported by media, politicians, and scientists that feeds on itself to destroy Capitalism. The Marxists (A.) sit back and enjoy their work which results in destruction of humanity as we know it. Just another Marxist (A.) plan playing itself out like all the others in their past. This too will fail like the rest.

Is anyone surprised that this guy is nuts? He transitioned (lefties are always transitioning) from astrophysics to climate science. He is used to making shit up and believing it. See dark matter, dark energy, cosmic inflation, super symmetry, etc…

Like Michael E. Mann’s movement from physics to paleoclimatology. Lazy liars don’t do well in the physics profession.

I see where astronomers have discovered several galaxies that they think do not incorporate dark matter.

It’s always something. We stumble ahead one footstep at a time down the road to understanding.
