Kids Care About Climate Change With Colorful Drawings

A gigantic banner helps spread the message globally.

ByMary Jo DiLonardo

There’s a giant banner traveling the world, spreading the message about how kids care about climate change. The banner is a colorful patchwork of more than 2,600 drawings made by children from 33 countries.

The drawings were entries in an international drawing contest where kids were asked to depict how trees help cool the Earth and how this helps protect penguins, coral reefs, and people. A tree has been planted for every drawing entered in the “Kids Care About Climate Change” contest.

The banner is a whopping 23 feet high by 14 feet wide (7 meters by 4.2 meters) and was recently on display at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.

The competition was created by Marji Puotinen, a geographer and research scientist in Perth, Australia, who studies the impact of natural disturbances like hurricanes on the world’s coral reefs. She’s part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program that is working to help the Great Barrier Reef survive with short-term interventions while the world is reducing carbon emissions.

“Perhaps even more important than the above is that I am a mother of three kids who deserve a safe planet on which to grow up and live. Therefore, the drawing contest that produced the GIANT banners is part of what I do unpaid in my spare time, involving my own kids as much as possible,” Puotinen tells Treehugger.

“The goal of displaying and filming the giant banner is to amplify the voices of the kids as expressed by their drawings, to show them how one drawing they do may not be noticed but by joining together with other kids around the world, a greater impact can result,” Puotinen says.

“It is also to inspire and empower the adults around these kids, who might struggle to find a way to act on climate on their own but find it easier and more fulfilling to do so in cooperation with their children. Within this goal, we especially wanted to bring the giant banner to COP26 to remind delegates and world leaders of their obligation to achieve results for climate justice for kids and people around the world that did little to cause the climate crisis yet are being affected the most.”

Children Influence Their Parents’ Opinions on Climate Change

By Katherine Martinko

Updated May 7, 2019

A study has found that kids exposed to climate change science at school use it to convince their parents of the issue’s urgency.

Before 16-year-old Greta Thurnberg began her now-famous climate activism, skipping school on Fridays to sit in front of the Swedish parliament with a sign that read, “School Strike for Climate,” she started with her parents. She presented facts and documentaries, sharing everything she’d learned, until they relented and acknowledged the truth in what she’d said. Greta told the Guardian, “After a while, they started listening to what I actually said. That’s when I realized I could make a difference.”

It turns out, parents aren’t as set in their ways as one might think, and a child can be a profound influencer. A new study from the University of North Carolina, published May 6 in Nature Climate Change journal, set out to discover just how effective children are at changing their parents’ minds – and the answer is very.

The researchers found that children do bring home what they’ve learned at school and communicate it to their parents, engaging in ways that spur parents to reconsider their views. This is partly due to the trust that exists between parents and children, making it easier to talk about an emotionally-charged issue such as climate change. Over the years, both the control and experimental groups developed more concern about climate change, but the change was most pronounced in families where children were taught the curriculum.

Children can foster climate change concern among their parents

Abstract

The collective action that is required to mitigate and adapt to climate change is extremely difficult to achieve, largely due to socio-ideological biases that perpetuate polarization over climate change. Because climate change perceptions in children seem less susceptible to the influence of worldview or political context, it may be possible for them to inspire adults towards higher levels of climate concern, and in turn, collective action. Child-to-parent intergenerational learning—that is, the transfer of knowledge, attitudes or behaviours from children to parents—may be a promising pathway to overcoming socio-ideological barriers to climate concern. Here we present an experimental evaluation of an educational intervention designed to build climate change concern among parents indirectly through their middle school-aged children in North Carolina, USA. Parents of children in the treatment group expressed higher levels of climate change concern than parents in the control group. The effects were strongest among male parents and conservative parents, who, consistent with previous research, displayed the lowest levels of climate concern before the intervention. Daughters appeared to be especially effective in influencing parents. Our results suggest that intergenerational learning may overcome barriers to building climate concern.

I’m personally appalled about efforts by climate activists to recruit children to their cause, to exploit the special relationship kids have with their parents to spread their climate doomsday message.

Climate indoctrination efforts like Marji’s could be driving an emotional wedge between some parents and their children, and raising anxiety levels in families, especially if the parents do not wholeheartedly embrace the urgent climate messages the children have been indoctrinated to deliver. There is evidence climate anxiety is destroying the lives of some young people, pushing some kids towards self destructive behaviours like hard drug abuse.

I’m not suggesting Marji wants to hurt anyone, physically or otherwise – but please stop.

Worse consequences than the tragic destruction of individual lives are possible. The dangerous seeds planted by well meaning do gooders like Marji, the idea that the world is in peril, that parents are wrong and must be re-educated about climate change, could be nurtured and exploited by the enemies of freedom and democracy.

Every tyrannical movement in history targeted the kids, because kids are mentally vulnerable. Most kids, especially very young kids, don’t have mature critical thinking skills, skills which might allow them to evaluate and reject climate indoctrination.

For example, Mao’s cultural revolution was driven by teenagers, kids who had wholeheartedly swallowed the indoctrination and lies they had been fed, which turned them into communist fanatics who in some cases were willing to murder their own parents, after their parents failed to embrace the extreme political beliefs the children tried to share.

Well meaning teachers, some of whom helped plant the seeds of Maoism, found themselves powerless to stop the murderous juggernaut once it was set in motion, and mostly ended up dead if they tried.

Please stop now Marji.

Be sure to point out how trees utilize and scrub that NASTY CO2 gas from the atmosphere.

Also discuss how most crops grow better with increased CO2 and how decreasing it would negatively effect the global food supply.

Then demonstrate how global greening has been enhanced by current CO2 levels

After which assign the kiddies with the task of identifying the products they use that depend on petrochemicals from Gas Drilling and what products they use that are dependent on Coal Mining

Any teacher that DOESN’T do this very thing is presenting a BIASED view of CO2 and petrochemicals and not really teaching anything but THEIR BIAS

There are two issues here. One is about insulating houses. The other is about the real purpose of Insulate Britain. The main purpose of Extinction Rebellion is to get their members (not the leaders) arrested and put in jail. The founders of ER think that by getting lots of their members put in jail this will influence government action. I would not be at all surprised if IB is working on the same idea. They want people put in jail. The insulate bit is just an excuse to demonstrate.

Nikole Hannah-Jones, the leader of the 1619 Project, and a major proponent of Critical Race Theory, has pushed the idea that parents are not allowed an opinion of what is taught in schools. This attitude has actually caught on in some jurisdictions, while being rejected (by parents!) in others. The gap between science and political science widens, and is not headed for a good outcome.

“A grassroots movement of ordinary Oklahomans has won half the seats on Enid city council, and majorities on the school and library boards, yet the New York Times is blaming white tribal politics for the movement’s success.

The “Enid Freedom Fighters” movement began in July 2020, when the local council proposed a mask mandate, according to the New York Times December 26 report:

“In February [2021], they swept the local elections, winning three seats on the City Council — including Mr. [Jonathan] Waddell’s and Mr. [Ben] Ezzell’s. Winning felt good and they kept going. Over the course of this year, through a series of elections, appointments and City Council votes, they have helped get four candidates onto the school board and another four onto the library board, Ms. Crabtree said, the latter after a disagreement over a display of L.G.B.T.Q. books for Pride Month.

“The [group’s members] have assumed effective control of most of the public bodies in Enid,” Mr. Ezzell said this month.”

Griff, the alarmist literature is jammed with studies of how “climate change” is affecting kids mental health. But of course no kid alive can possibly detect any climate change. As always, at this point you need to reflect on how most of these first world kids (this is truly a first world problem) see temperature swings from 20-70C over the course of every year, they cannot detect the changes you rave about.

They do not suffer from climate change, they suffer from alarmism, catastrophism masquerading as news.

I have and will continue to point out here and on other forums that parents of children who have given up, all the way up to the extent of taking their lives, need to realize who was responsible for their loved ones deaths. And go see them.

Here in Canada we have a long list starting with the Prime minister, most of his cabinet ministers, many of the opposition, David Suzuki and many others.

I think the difference is when we were kids the acid rain and nuclear winter scares weren’t so pervasive. Yes, it was news but it wasn’t rammed down our throats every minute of every day.

These days kids are highly influenced not just by teachers but by the internet and so-called social media. This happens from the moment they wake up and pick up their phones to the moment they put down their phones and go to sleep.

Not only are these kids being bombarded with doom and gloom all day long but due to Farcebook, Twatter and Instacrap algorithms, the only messages they receive and the messages that reinforce rather than challenge their beliefs.

We live in an age where clueless “influencers” divide opinions on the basis of “You’re either with us or against us”, fed to kids by social media and the Misleadia.

I see, you are using focus groups to hone your propaganda.

The alarmists have to do something to push the climate change crisis, since they have no evidence to show it’s real, so they resort to propaganda and using children to promote the meme.

This is what happens when you have no evidence to convince people. In that case, you have to try to fool them. That’s what the alarmists are doing here, using children.

Nope. The problem for alarmists is they have no evidence to show that what they claim about CO2 and the Earth’s climate is true. If they had evidence, they wouldn’t have to jump through all these hoops trying to convince people. If they had evidence, it would be obvious to everyone.

Alarmists don’t have any evidence to back up their claims. They claim they do, but that’s as far as it goes. That’s not good enough. That’s not evidence.

Alarmists want to turn the world upside down with no evidence that it is necessary to do so. So they propagandize children.

But many truly believe what they’re telling us. They believe it so strongly they’ve paid top scientists to provide the science they need. The trouble is, the hired scientists are unable to provide any evidence to go with the claims … so they offer models instead.

The World Economic Forum show great enthusiasm for the use of children and adolescents in pushing ideological views. This is from Klaus’ excellent revolutionary book about resetting the world.
Page 102 – “Youth activism is increasing worldwide, being revolutionized by social media that increases mobilization to an extent that would have been impossible before. It takes many different forms, ranging from non-institutionalized political participation to demonstrations and protests, and addresses issues as divers as climate change, economic reforms, gender equality and LGBTQ rights. The young generation is firmly at the vanguard of social change. There is little doubt that it will be the catalysts for change and a source of critical momentum for the Great Reset.”

NPR’s show This American Life had a good show one week about how climate change alarmism destroyed a family . it can be found in their podcast archives . scientist father became so obsessed with climate change his familiy couldn’t stand it and revolted . the kids won’t even talk to him anymore and the parents are divorced . the constant barrage about their co2 destroying the planet eventually became too much to live with . worth listening to .

Here is the link to that story. It is both sad, and very revealing about the “climate change” cult/quasi-religion. The dad in the story appears to have had an unstable mind to begin with, but climate hysteria definitely put him over the edge. Worth a listen.

The mother, it should be pointed out, is not free of blame for what happened. She chose to turn a blind eye to what amounted to child abuse at the hands of the father, in the name of “climate change”. She still Believes, just in the usual, hypocritical, guilt-ridden way most Believers do.

Here’s a sketch of a young person giving “The Talk” to his parents. Of course, the situation is absurd and humorous, but it’s also a window into how Alarmists think. They actually believe children/young adults can and should “educate” their parents about climate change. Parents, and by extension “old people” are viewed as stupid and uneducated, for not “caring” about “climate change”. But no worries because, once given the “facts” about “climate change” they suddenly do understand. Easy peasey.

The genesis for most of this began when “feelings” began to replace reason and “argument” was repackaged and resold as a pejorative. “Child centered learning” was the source of “The Talk”. Begun in the ’30s it made a come back in the 60s and led right into the philosophy exemplified in this subject.

Well said. The term “micro-aggression” comes to mind.

Any time you disagree with the consensus on any leftist ideal, it is an aggression, or at least a micro-aggression.

Many of these terms and talking points have come into the language via ‘feminism’ gradually perverted by Marxist dogma from the Women’s Movement into its present form of intersectionalism. Now it has nothing to do with freedom, equality or women … it’s pure, corrosive propaganda, exactly like “climate change”. It’s just a means to an end … another source of agitprop.

The thing about this climate movement is that you can always taunt the claimant by pointing out his/her own climate hypocrisy. They always act differently than what they claim, but they expect OTHERS to be bigger climate champions. Just withhold the use of fossil fuels from the child and he will shut up.

“Just withhold the use of fossil fuels from the child and he will shut up”. I like that idea, to a point. If that were done, seriously, the child would be left naked and standing outside in whatever weather was going on at the time.
There is virtually nothing which does not involve the use of “fossil fuels”(petrochemicals) in either the manufacture of that product or is composed of one form or another of them. Even in the distribution of most goods it is reliant on rail or truck transport to get to market.
The alarmist “teachers” need to be replaced with folks who are actually interested in teaching not indoctrination in a faux science.
The “kung flu” scare is dying, time to ramp up the AGW, climate change bullcrap to continue the focus of removing power from the folks. If that doesn’t do the job of concentrating the power to the elites, there will be something else. Guaranteed.
As Rosenne Rosennadanna(a character from SNL) always said, “there’s always something”.
So true. It was funny at the time. Oh, well.

So we have to save the Great Barrier Reef that did not exist at least not at that spot just 20 000 years ago when sea level was 120 metre lower. And those same 20 000 years ago there would be not 1 tree in what today is Canada or Sweden or Scotland. All would be under Ice . Are we sure they want a greener world ?
Marji Puotinen, a geographer and research scientist must know that Earth is in an Ice Age right now and has been for the recent 3 Million years. And she must know that of the last 200 Million years those recent 3 Million years have been the coldest. And she must know that during our interglacial moment we live in trees could grow much closer to the poles and much higher up the mountain than today.

So what should I think of a person like Marji Puotinen, a geographer and research scientist ?

A friend of my niece’s took the grade school climate change indoctrination to heart. She spent much of grade school being fed climate change ideas in Science class( what a joke!). In high school she tried to establish a Students Against Climate change club or society.

She’s graduated almost in tears because only a few students stayed interested for more than a couple of meetings. The club disappeared during senior year.

This was bad for her and we should be aware that this indoctrination is happening. We also have to be aware that it is making it very difficult for students, as they progress, to get any meaningful jobs outside of teaching. A degree that smacks of climate change activism has very limited utility.

No one took the time to explain how science works to her?

Offered her some history of the world books? One that described the formation of the atmosphere and what CO₂ levels were for most of life’s history on this planet?

Pointed her towards meteorological history books?

How to assess whether science is conducted properly?

None of which actually challenges her leftist beliefs. Just slowly removes support for them.

Then you could point out that except for very few instances, like a mountain crashing into the Earth, there are no such things as “tipping points”.

Then help her learn about how cold Antarctica is and the irrationality of Antarctica glaciers causing catastrophic sea level rise.

Further details can then be provided regarding sea surface temperatures, AMO, PDO, El Nino, La Nina, historic droughts and floods, etc.

Otherwise, it sounds everyone let her flounder.

ATheoK: No one took the time to explain how science works to her?

It’s not that easy. I’ve tried talking to students like this and even if you make any headway in one given conversation, you lose more ground during the time in between. It’s much easier to abandon reason than to apply it, so they fall into the “easy” habits.

I’m old enough to remember when it was the parents who were supposed to influence the children.

When I was in grade school, I had teachers propagandizing me about the upcoming anthropogenic ice age that was supposed to starve us by the time we got out of college. My well educated parents set me right on that.

But at least we have proof of where all of the mental illness from the environmental stress willbe coming from.

Growing up, there were always teachers, whether public school teachers, lay teachers, nuns or priests where the ones with weak minds would go on unhinged rants about one thing or the other.

The best teachers were the ones with real world experience in the subjects they teach.

Nowadays, none of the teachers know their subjects.
Instead they’re taught to teach with more administrators than teachers hired to keep pressure on the teachers. It is incredibly easy for teachers to be incompetent and absurdly awful at teaching.

absurd teacher rants were always warning signs to not make eye contact, keep our heads down, nod occasionally and rush out of the class room when the bell rang.
That has not changed.

Didn’t matter whether the rant was about performance on a test, ignored homework, alleged sins, pollution, population bomb, global cooling, teens or ladies driving, bad writing, terrible grammar, lack of respect, commercialization of Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, July 4th, etc., the rules were the same. Keep our mouths shut until the crank ran out of steam.

Teacher assigns a favorite topic as a written topic, you go to the school library, pull the book and rewrite what is in the book. Put the footnote(s) at the end.
Done deal.

Lots of teachers gave minimal passing grades for failing to emotionally grab their favorite topics. Again, don’t make eye contact or call attention to oneself. Keep your mouth shut and scoot when the bell rings.
There are plenty of mouthy kids who will get the attention of these numbskulls, let them.

Some of my old teachers I know for a fact that they ended up under supervision in institutions. Until such institutions were closed. Nowadays, I suspect they’ve ended up as cat ladies/men living with far too many cats while wondering where their Social Security money goes.

It’s a standard power technique: Warn people of an impending doom that only you can save them from. Make publicly visible efforts to combat it. Claim credit when it doesn’t happen.

Oh yes, and you collect money every step along the way. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) ‘scientists’ are another example.

Climate scientist Marji Puotinen hard at work recruiting the next generation of child soldiers for the climate movement.”

If the method worked, McDonalds would own the dinner scene in every family.

Most kids indoctrinated early ferociously rebel when the learn the truth.

For the gretas, someone has to keep lying nonstop to them while hoping the kid never wises up.
Lies may start out small, they keep getting larger as time passes. eventually, even people wholly devoted to the cause begin to realize it’s a lie.

Yes, this is what all authoritarian religions have a record of doing.

First you ban the public expression of dissent. Then you indoctrinate children.

The content is pretty immaterial. It can be claims about the founder (for whose existence, let alone deeds and teachings, there is usually little or no historical evidence) or it can be, as in modern secular religions, about claims on matters of fact.

National Socialism was of this last type. Other examples are the gender insanity that is gripping much of the educational establishment, and the climate insanity that seems to have taken over all the mass media, at least in the UK and US.

They usually do die out, but the example of religion shows that once established by state coercion, they can persist for a very long time even when the society has no legal bars to dissent. The beliefs become self-enforcing, and it takes a second step, for the state to positively protect dissent, for them to lose their grip.

In the UK, on gender, the recent case of Maya Forstater was such a development. But there have been no similar cases on climate or on race (the other religious manias of our time).

I have posted before on Watts that even severe and decisive contrary evidence on climate is unlikely to disenchant believers. In fact, it may have the paradoxical effect of strengthening their commitment and increasing the ferocity of their attacks on doubters.

We can see this last happening pretty much daily in the pages of the Guardian and in the BBC climate coverage. As the evidence moves against alarmism, so their determination to find and indeed invent anything that can be argued to support it becomes stronger, and so every bit of warm weather anywhere in the world, any storm or flood or wild fire, is cited in hysterical doom laded terms with calls on the public to turn from their wickedness and believe.

Not particularly to do anything. Mostly just to believe. The leaders will take care of what to do. Usually it is one variant or another of invading Russia…

In the climate case invading Russia consists of covering the North Sea with turbines, banning fossil fuels, while doubling or tripling the demand for electricity. But don’t worry, when we are all shivering in the dark unable to drive anyplace because we can’t charge our cars (or perhaps cannot afford to buy them in the first place), and when global CO2 emissions have risen from 37 billion to around 45 billion despite our heroic gestures, the faithful in the form of Caroline Lucas and Ed Davey will continue to explain to us how we must believe, believe again, and get even colder.

They may even believe it themselves.

“I am a mother of three kids who deserve a safe planet on which to grow up and live.“

This is doing a great disservice to her kids by instilling a sense of entitlement in them. The planet owes you nothing. NOTHING.
