‘Picked up his patient’s chart & penned in the words ‘climate change’

Times Colonist: Climate change enters the ER: For the first time in his 10 years as a physician, the ER doctor picked up his patient’s chart and penned in the words “climate change.” “If we’re not looking at the underlying cause, and we’re just treating the symptoms, we’re just gonna keep falling further and further behind,” he told Glacier Media when asked why he did it. At the same time, Merritt says he hoped another family physician would read the chart, and one day, consider drawing a straighter line between their patients’ health and climate change.
… The response was immediate. Roughly 40 doctors and nurses at the small hospital — all busy trying to manage a pandemic and their regular professional lives — came together under the banner Doctors and Nurses for Planetary Health. … Starting Thursday at noon, Lau says the non-partisan group is calling on the provincial government to, among other things, declare an “ecological emergency” and end subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. “A lot of us were really shook by this summer, by the heat dome and the wildfires that are just escalating every year,” she says. “This is about moving forward in a way that saves lives.”

Calls to add ‘climate change’ to death certificates – New study demands ‘climate change’ be added as ‘pre-existing condition’

Cause of Death? Climate Change. “Climate change is a killer, but we don’t acknowledge it on death certificates,” co-author Dr Arnagretta Hunter, from The Australian National University (ANU) Medical School, said. “There is second component on a death certificate which allows for pre-existing conditions and other factors.

When a patient in her 70s came into the emergency department at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, B.C., Dr. Kyle Merritt had no idea hundreds of people were dying of heat across the province.
It was late June, and British Columbia was consumed under a heat wave that would soon go down as both the hottest and deadliest in Canadian history.
The head of the hospital’s emergency department, Merritt could see the aggravated toll the extreme heat took on patients battling multiple health problems at once, often with little money.
“She has diabetes. She has some heart failure. … She lives in a trailer, no air conditioning,” says Merritt of the senior patient.
“All of her health problems have all been worsened. And she’s really struggling to stay hydrated.”
As the mercury climbed, more patients arrived and pressure on the hospital mounted. Merritt and his colleagues tried to make sense of a surge in heat illness most had only seen in medical school.
“We were having to figure out how do we cool someone in the emergency department,” says the doctor. “People are running out to the Dollar Store to buy spray bottles.”
Merritt remembers hitting a tipping point, the extreme heat an opening salvo in another summer of crisis. He started contacting other doctors and nurses, in Prince George, Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria.
The response was immediate. Roughly 40 doctors and nurses at the small hospital — all busy trying to manage a pandemic and their regular professional lives — came together under the banner Doctors and Nurses for Planetary Health.“I was worried about the summer that was coming,” says Merritt of the rising number of health-care workers desperate to talk about how climate change is affecting their patients’ health.
“I was really quite amazed at how many people have decided to jump in.”
Just as doctors and nurses started to make sense of the record heat, it cleared — only to be replaced by a blanket of wildfire smoke.
Climate change enters the ER
…
When a patient came in struggling to breathe, Merritt knew the smoke — that hadn’t lifted from the region for days on end — had made a case of asthma worse.
For the first time in his 10 years as a physician, the ER doctor picked up his patient’s chart and penned in the words “climate change.”
“If we’re not looking at the underlying cause, and we’re just treating the symptoms, we’re just gonna keep falling further and further behind,” he told Glacier Media when asked why he did it.
“It’s me trying to just … process what I’m seeing. We’re in the emergency department, we look after everybody, from the most privileged to the most vulnerable, from cradle to grave, we see everybody. And it’s hard to see people, especially the most vulnerable people in our society, being affected. It’s frustrating.”
At the same time, Merritt says he hoped another family physician would read the chart, and one day, consider drawing a straighter line between their patients’ health and climate change.
Smoke and heat affect more than peoples’ physical health. Merritt says he saw a number of patients already suffering from depression or anxiety have their symptoms worsen during the wildfire season. Wildfire smoke even triggered flashbacks in a patient who was coping with post-traumatic stress disorder from his time as a soldier.
…
Doctors at the feet of power
As global heating takes centre stage in Glasgow this week, Merritt and about 40 other nurses and doctors are taking their concerns to Nelson’s city hall, where the group will rally alongside at least 130 more health-care workers demonstrating at the provincial legislature in Victoria.
“We wanted to do something big. We wanted to gather at the feet of power,” says Dr. Kelly Lau, a family physician based in Vancouver, who is among those headed to Victoria Nov. 4.
Starting Thursday at noon, Lau says the non-partisan group is calling on the provincial government to, among other things, declare an “ecological emergency” and end subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.
“A lot of us were really shook by this summer, by the heat dome and the wildfires that are just escalating every year,” she says. “This is about moving forward in a way that saves lives.”

Surely it’s a doctors job to record observable medical facts. Researchers pick through that data later to determine overarching patterns.
This is like a fireman recording the cause of a suspicious fire as ‘traumatic childhood’.

Even the suggestion of ‘climate change’ being a real condition from which one medically suffers from is preposterous and unethical.
The doctor is not fit to practice.
Canadians need to start taking charge of their own health care, and stop being conditioned.

“If you have an asthma attack and die during heavy smoke exposure from bushfires, the death certificate should include that information. We can make a diagnosis of disease like coronavirus, but we are less literate in environmental determinants like hot weather or bushfire smoke.” …
“Climate change is the single greatest health threat that we face globally even after we recover from coronavirus,” Dr. Hunter said.
Bill Gates on Aug. 6, 2020: “The actual economic and death toll from climate change will be much, much, much greater than what we have than what we have with this pandemic.”

Every one of them needs to be placed in a psychiatric prison.
He should be struck off for this nonsense. I wonder if he knows what the ICD10 code is for climate change.
“Smoke Inhalation” would have been a valid COD, since the numbers don’t support climate change, but a 30 something doctor knows little about the forest fires of the 50’s or 70’s….
I particularly remember the fires in the ’50s. My family were heading up to a ranch, in the Caribou, for a summer holiday. Just past Merritt we were pulled over by the forest service and my father was enlisted in the “volunteer” fire brigade while the rest of us continued on to the ranch.
Yes, a friend of our family on vacation from Navy duty in the 50’s, found himself “volunteered” to be in charge of a group who turned out to be prison convicts, and the next team over had been sequestered out of a local bar. Today fire fighters are flown in from as far as Mexico…hopefully arriving c/w training and PPE…and the forest service’s fire fighting conscription powers have been curtailed.
For real? You could be compelled to fight a fire?
Today, the province’s Wildfire Act authorizes B.C.’s fire officials to “order a person who is 19 years of age or older to assist in fire control.” it also provides the authority to also allows the B.C. Wildfire Service to commandeer vehicles, equipment and even whole private businesses.
The conscription provisions are a throwback to a time when Canadian governments routinely fought wildfires by press-ganging local men into firefighting units. As late as the 1960s, B.C. fire crews were often recruited out of taverns or at roadblocks rounding up passing motorists.

Never mind Twilight Zone: humanity has officially crossed over into the Stupid Zone.
Also known as the Bozone.
2nd law of stupidity: there is no correlation between education and/or other characteristics of a person and the level of stupidity.
Heat Deaths =/= climate deaths
(Just as Deaths from cold exposure =/= climate deaths)
Can a Doctor be sanctioned for practicing quackery, without also being a ducky?
Why aren’t these same doctors not getting riled up by the 20 times greater number of deaths caused by the cold? Those studies also showed that it was the moderately warm and cold that killed more than the extremes.
As everything bad is caused by climate change pro forma dead certificates could be printed with the ’cause of death’ already printed in as on the image above.
This would also save time for other hard-pressed authorities like police and coroners.
Yes.
A separate Death Certificate form wouldn’t even be required –
just have an extra 3 lines on the bottom of the Birth Certificate saying –
CAUSE OF DEATH: Climate Change
DATE:
LOCATION:
Imagine all the paper, printing and mailing that would save.
So determine how much of the health care facility’s electricity comes from fossil fuels and cut their access to electricity by that amount. If it is heated by gas, turn it off. No internal combustion vehicles can operate for the facility or deliver to it. These people are just dumb as rocks and no one should have to put up with them.
BC has a bunch of hydro power just like Washington state, so they are largely insulated from the lunacy in their homes. Of course driving is another story.
Nelson BC is almost assuredly all hydro-electric power generation. And 99% will heat their homes with electricity.
Sorry sir but, your persistent cough is caused by “climate change.” The cure unfortunately will cost you $30 trillion.
And there’s not even a remote bit of evidence that the supposed cure will do anything good.
The death certificate might as well say Cause of death – Unicorn poisoning
Max P
Perhaps ‘Gored,by a Unicorn’?
How many fires are caused by human misbehaviour? There’s your straighter line. Otherwise you could just say ‘static electricity transitioning to dynamic’, i.e. lightning. That description would work for direct strikes also.
Will people who die of the preferred cold and starvation be allowed”Climate change”
On their death certificate?
Air conditioning might be a possible solution…?
He didn’t know there was a switch for that.
Considering Nelson BC is always very hot in the summer, I am sure their ER is prepared for heat victims. This doctor is acting like this is the first time it has ever been hot in Nelson. The official treatment for heat is immersion in cool water or cooling blankets.
Isn’t it illegal to submit a falsified death certificate?
It would only have been true if it had been filled in with “Energy poverty due to climate fraudsterism.”
An elderly person living in a trailer with no A/C and having trouble staying hydrated during a heat wave. Cause of death: neglect, institutional and personal. Remember all the elderly European heat-related deaths because everybody else went on vacation?
That “doctor” merritt is suffering from the diagnosis of malpractice….most common symptom is quackery.
“The doctor is not fit to practice.”
I couldn’t agree more. These people are not doctors.
Medical employees of the State with a massive sense of entitlement.
So the doctor is proclaiming that had the outdoor temperatures been 0.2C cooler, the patient wouldn’t have died?
That’s exactly what they appear to be saying, although they are too stupid to think of it in those terms. Interestingly enough, the Lancet study of weather related deaths showed that 20 times more people died from moderate cold than extreme heat or cold. 100s of millions of people live through temperature extremes up to 10 degrees warmer.
Yep you can’t put an extra blanket on your bed if you get cold because you might die. Everytime you think you have reached “peak climate stupidity” it goes further.
Pathetic, hand wringing catastrophists.
The world has gone from admiring people of courage, to worshipping bedwetters.
Kyle Merritt should consider what might have happened to that poor 70+ year old lady, had some of the resources devoted to his elite education and training been diverted into safe and comfortable, air conditioned accommodation instead of a cheap trailer ;
Prevention is the best cure.
When people can’t get fossil fuels to stay warm in winter- and die, I hope the death certificate reads, “Cause of Death? Climate Alarmists.”
Looks like Biden si considering shutting down more pipelines. Just in time for winter.

So if it had been 1°C cooler, would she have died of “climate change”? Because that’s the difference in global temperature back in the early twentieth century “before” so-called “climate change.” What’s the temperature threshold you’ve arbitrarily decided qualifies as death from climate change, Dr. Quack? Because you’ve only got 1°C to work with.
I blame that jumper she was wearing it clearly caused more than 1 degree of warming and killed her.
From the article: “Cause of Death? Climate Change. “Climate change is a killer, but we don’t acknowledge it on death certificates,” co-author Dr Arnagretta Hunter, from The Australian National University (ANU) Medical School, said. “
Claiming climate change as a cause of death would be medical malpractice.
Doctors shouldn’t do politics, which is what this is.
Putting false information into an official document is a felony. They need to be charged and fined to the letter of the law.
Find another doctor. Quickly.
The latest fad seems to be doctors throwing away their credibility.
Good Job!
So this is the great Canadian health care system?
Yep … they’re so intent on politics and social justice we have a huge shortage of family doctors here.
There is this nut, but in general our healthcare system is ‘good’, but very slow.
What exactly is a slow emergency?
