Trudeau hikes carbon tax, positions Canada to hit climate goal
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped up efforts to hit Canada’s emissions targets by 2030, pledging billions in new money to combat climate change and increasing his marquee carbon tax.
The measures, announced Friday in Ottawa by Trudeau and Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, seek to put the resource-rich northern nation on track to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 40 per cent below 2005 levels by the end of this decade, versus the current 30 per cent goal.
Central to achieving that will be an increase in the government’s carbon price to $170 (US$133) per metric ton by 2030. It was already on track to hit $50 two years from now, and will increase by $15 a year after that. Though revenue from the levy is returned to the provinces via consumer rebates, it’s being challenged in the courts by oil-producing Alberta and others.
“There are still places in this country that want pollution to be free again,” Trudeau told reporters. “We are going to continue to increase the price on pollution and give more money back to Canadians and their families.”

The official Canadian Government release describes the plan to raise carbon taxes to $170 / ton of CO2 by 2030 (page 26).
As far as I can tell the easiest way to escape this punitive tax is to export carbon intensive manufacturing jobs to “developing countries” like China.
Under the Paris Agreement China gets to defer any obligation for meaningful carbon action until 2030.
This is the best news China has heard all day.
Being a Canadian and living in Canada, I recognize that we have a serious political problem.
Radical Democrats control Canada’s two main TV channels–CBC and CTV.
Also, the major newspapers.
Nothing but hate Trump vitriol, fear of influenza and fear of bad weather.

Not only that but Radical Dems control the House of Commons as well as PM Trudeau.

Does the ten-child act favor male or female Posterity? Will they offer carbon offsets or incentives for elective… voluntary sacrifices? Will the penalty be applied per couple or community?

Trudeau has got it wrong.
There should be a $25/ton of CO2 for airlines, cruise ships and private planes, to be divided among the passengers, to be paid before traveling.
You should have stopped right there.
There is absolutely no need or justification for imposing these additional taxes.
A gallon of gasoline provides around 8.8 kg of CO2.
If this tax becomes reality, canuks will pay additional $1.51 tax per gallon, bringing it to $6.05 as of today’s prices. Nice little earner for powers to be.
Somehow we should have known that governments would find a way to tax the air we breathe.
This is the Left’s payoff after years of wasting multi-millions of Canadian tax dollars pandering to the climate crazies. There was never any other reason for governments to have perpetuated the massive AGW fraud.

If Biden wins, there will never be another honest election in the USA – vote-rigging will continue and it will be the end of freedom. Europe and Canada have already fallen far down that “poverty road to Venezuela”. If America falls, there will be nowhere left to run to.
Trudeau’s regime has been devastating to Western Canada’s Oil and gas producing economy. First he had parliament pass anti-oil tanker legislation for the west coast on the basis of whale migration routes then stopped the Northern Gateway pipeline, on the basis of Kermode bear habitat. Then actually passed legislation to make the approval process for the Energy East pipeline that could have carried the Northern Gateway oil to east coast refineries, so difficult that it was cancelled. Earlier, they disallowed most drilling expenses of oil well drilling companies, effectively shutting down drilling funds that were the investment engines of that sector. They bought but did nothing with the existing Trans-mountain pipeline so as to not totally alienate industry, knowing that it’s route through a major city would preclude it ever being expanded with the possible exception of giving it to aboriginal bands. Then $30/ton carbon tax, now progressing to $150. Government officials have stated “it (oil) will have to stay in the ground for everyone’s good”.
Their politicians actually believe that the world is in a CO2 crisis that will cause Canada to get a couple of degrees warmer….not really….they like the enviro votes they can buy with their virtue signalling. Most of them have warm places closer to the equator they prefer go to in winter. They know a couple of degrees isn’t sufficiently warmer.
The koolaid runs strong in Canada!
Shouting the odds about Mr. Trudeau and his plans is unnecessary. Canadians will learn as all stupid people learn, the hard way. Only when they are cold and hungry with no future will they accept how dumb they have been in supporting their deranged Prime Minister. Needless the say there is no joy in stating this conclusion.

Since the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero, any reduction in CO2 emissions that might be achieved will have no effect on climate. He should also tax individuals for the CO2 they exhale. And how about taxing emissions of a greenhouse gas that is molecule per molecule a stronger absorber of IR radiation than is CO2, namely H2O.

So why would non-first world gas, oil or coal exporting countries recognize Canadian Intellectural Property, if Canada is trying to destroy their export industries?
The point is that the response to the war on gas, oil, coal can come in unexpected ways, that are particularly painful for first world countries that wage such war.
Based on this article, it doesn’t seem the “Canadian Intellectural Property” is very significant, nor worth much money.

With any luck we will be rid of this national embarrassment in the next couple of years. Maybe we should make sure and get some pointers from the US Democrats on ensuring the desired result .
IF there is a tax and divided scheme in Canada, bet dollars to donuts that the canadian poor are making out on a carbon tax. And you can be sure that the bulk of the carbon tax revenue is coming from the middle class so in short, the middle class are being used as unwitting pawns to support the poor while the rich get out of paying to support them.
Its set up to supposedly be “revenue neutral”…..if you are a landlord, you pay carbon tax, if a tenant you get a refund cheque…if you own a business you pay carbon tax, workers get a refund cheque…it’s old fashioned vote smuckering. Large businesses that have to compete internationally get exempted or “subsidized” in woke-speak….. really you are down to an upper middle class tax transfer plan, with the upper middle class being defined as anyone that owns something.
It’s even worse than that. Workers get a rebate check, but the check does not cover all the extra expenses the worker has to pay after the carbon dioxide tax is passed.
If a carbon dioxide tax is passed, or raised, everyone will be poorer, except the politicians who get to spend your money on their favorite project: Themselves.
90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border because the rest is frozen. If the claims of CO2 being the main cause of warming were correct, the responsible course of action for the Canadian government would be to encourage raising the CO2 level as much as possible.

Levying a tax on carbon dioxide/transportation raises the cost of everything in the economy, since everything in the economy needs to be transported one place or another, and that all depends on the price of fossil fuels.
Rebating a portion of the carbon dioxide tax to taxpayers will not cover all the costs imposed on them by taxing carbon dioxide. The poor and everyone else will pay more for everything they buy.
Imposing a carbon dioxide tax puts a brake on the whole economy.
Many of our leaders are living in a False Reality and this is causing them to make very bad decisions. Count Trudeau among them.
Raising taxes for anything is a bad idea, and raising taxes on carbon dioxide/transportation is the worst tax idea of all of them. It makes no economic sense, so naturally that’s what socialists want to promote.
Most of the “decision makers” you’re speaking of are so dense that if their brains were dynamite they wouldn’t be able to blow their hats off. The rest know perfectly well that man-made “climate change” has no basis in science any more than all this nonsense about this plandemic has any basis in science. It’s all political posturing … playing off the fear they’ve instilled in the masses.
