Were Dangerous Wuhan Coronavirus Lab Experiments Part Funded by Western Governments?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

h/t Breitbart; The Australian Daily Telegraph claims a leaked dossier suggests it is China’s fault that Covid-19 spread; China deliberately suppressed knowledge of the outbreak, instead of trying to stop the spread of the epidemic.

But dangerous Wuhan “Gain of Function” Studies, in which virologists deliberately created lethal human pathogens from bat viruses, to evaluate the risk of such pathogens evolving naturally, received funding from the USA and Australia, even after concerns were raised by US embassy scientists in 2018 about inadequate safety procedures.

Coronavirus NSW: Dossier lays out case against China bat virus program

Sharri Markson, The Daily TelegraphMay 2, 2020 3:15pm

China deliberately suppressed or destroyed evidence of the coronavirus outbreak in an “assault on international transparency’’ that cost tens of thousands of lives, according to a dossier prepared by concerned Western governments on the COVID-19 contagion.

The 15-page research document, obtained by The Saturday Telegraph, lays the foundation for the case of negligence being mounted against China.

It states that to the “endangerment of other countries” the Chinese government covered-up news of the virus by silencing or “disappearing” doctors who spoke out, destroying evidence of it in laboratories and refusing to provide live samples to international scientists who were working on a vaccine.

It can also be revealed the Australian government trained and funded a team of Chinese scientists who belong to a laboratory which went on to genetically modify deadly coronaviruses that could be transmitted from bats to humans and had no cure, and is not the subject of a probe into the origins of COVID-19.

Key figures of the Wuhan Institute of Virology team, who feature in the government dossier, were either trained or employed in the CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory where they conducted foundational research on deadly pathogens in live bats, including SARS, as part of an ongoing partnership between the CSIRO and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The study acknowledges the incredible danger of the work they were conducting.

The potential to prepare for and mitigate future outbreaks must be weighed against the risk of creating more dangerous pathogens,” they wrote.

The US withdrew funding from controversial experiments that make pathogens more potent or likely to spread dangerous viruses in October 2014, concerned it could lead to a global pandemic.

The pause on funding for 21 “gain of function” studies was then lifted in December 2017.

Despite the concerns, the CSIRO continued to partner and fund research with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

A ‘‘Sensitive but Unclassified’’ cable, dated January 19, 2018, obtained by The Washington Post, revealed that US embassy scientists and diplomats in Beijing visited the laboratory and sent warnings back to Washington about inadequate safety practices and management weaknesses as it conducted research on coronaviruses from bats.

The study describes the deliberate creation of chimeric bat viruses capable of infecting humans, to investigate the likelihood that such viruses could evolve naturally;

Abstract

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV underscores the threat of cross-species transmission events leading to outbreaks in humans. Here we examine the disease potential of a SARS-like virus, SHC014-CoV, which is currently circulating in Chinese horseshoe bat populations. Using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system, we generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone. The results indicate that group 2b viruses encoding the SHC014 spike in a wild-type backbone can efficiently use multiple orthologs of the SARS receptor human angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2), replicate efficiently in primary human airway cells and achieve in vitro titers equivalent to epidemic strains of SARS-CoV. Additionally, in vivo experiments demonstrate replication of the chimeric virus in mouse lung with notable pathogenesis. Evaluation of available SARS-based immune-therapeutic and prophylactic modalities revealed poor efficacy; both monoclonal antibody and vaccine approaches failed to neutralize and protect from infection with CoVs using the novel spike protein. On the basis of these findings, we synthetically re-derived an infectious full-length SHC014 recombinant virus and demonstrate robust viral replication both in vitro and in vivo. Our work suggests a potential risk of SARS-CoV re-emergence from viruses currently circulating in bat populations.

What a mess. Here is my take on what I think happened.

The scientists in Wuhan have been playing with Chimeric bat viruses in their city centre laboratory since at least 2013 (the date of a previous study mentioned by the Daily Telegraph). Members of the team were trained by Australia. Links with Australia were apparently ongoing. The research was at least partly funded by the USA and Australia; although the USA withdrew funding in 2014, funding apparently resumed in 2017.

There is evidence the Wuhan laboratory was not well managed. Aside from the obvious idiocy of siting such a facility in the middle of a big crowded city, there are multiple allegations of serious shortcomings with Wuhan laboratory safety protocols (a Chinese study which was hastily withdrawn, and the 2018 US embassy warning cited by the Daily Telegraph).

Although the evidence is circumstantial, it seems a strong possibility that SARS-CoV-2 is one of the horrifying chimeric bat viruses Wuhan researchers deliberately created, which escaped thanks to poor safety practices.

Whatever the source, China appears to have responded in the worse possible way by arresting whistleblowers and attempting to conceal the outbreak, instead of going public and focussing all their efforts on trying to stop it.

Horrible irony : USAID program PREDICT gave $200 million over 2009 – 09/2019 and just months before COVID it cut off funding. Compare that to the $2 trillion now allocated to the pandemic, (of course most of it going to WallStreet bailouts).

Americans will hopefully stand up for themselves one day and go back to the US Treasury printing the dollar. Bear in mind that the last person to do that was Kennedy.

Disease outbreak news
Novel Coronavirus – China
Disease outbreak news : Update
12 January 2020
On 11 and 12 January 2020, WHO received further detailed information from the National Health Commission about the outbreak.
WHO is reassured of the quality of the ongoing investigations and the response measures implemented in Wuhan, and the commitment to share information regularly.
The evidence is highly suggestive that the outbreak is associated with exposures in one seafood market in Wuhan. The market was closed on 1 January 2020. At this stage, there is no infection among healthcare workers, and no clear evidence of human to human transmission. The Chinese authorities continue their work of intensive surveillance and follow up measures, as well as further epidemiological investigations.

Usually, infection among healthcare workers is the trigger. Ordinarily they do not protect themselves from patients. If you go see a doctor because you think you might have the flu or a cold, your doctor does not put on PPE just to examine you.

But once healthcare workers become infected, then the alarm bells sound and it is time for healthcare workers to wear PPE and to begin to take measures to stop the spread if it looks like the virus or bacteria could cause serious health issues.

To the extent that Trump, and the rest of the non-Chinese world were slow to react was mostly due to the lies that China was telling.

Circumstantial evidence indeed. While I wouldn’t put it past the Chinese government to do what they are accused of, this case seems weaker than the one against Richard Jewel, and look how that turned out. But just like then, this will be played out in the court of public opinion by a media that knows almost nothing but is sure quick to spin it into a firestorm. Again, I’m not a Chinese apologist, far from it, but what we really know about the origin of this virus is very thin. Most of what is being reported is guesses and speculation. I will remain skeptical on this issue until something closer to “proof” is presented.

It does include Dr Shi (as the fourteenth author). But the other authors are Western, mostly American, and the work was done mainly in N Carolina. This first para of the methods gives an idea of the environment of the work:

“Wild-type SARS-CoV (Urbani), mouse-adapted SARS-CoV (MA15) and chimeric SARS-like CoVs were cultured on Vero E6 cells (obtained from United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases), grown in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) (Gibco, CA) and 5% fetal clone serum (FCS) (Hyclone, South Logan, UT) along with antibiotic/antimycotic (Gibco, Carlsbad, CA). “

The simple explanation of why the US, Australia and other countries funded research in Wuhan is that Chinese nationals (or residents or naturalized citizens), working in or with the funding agencies, influenced the funding.

It is the same mechanism that drives the preferential recruitment and placement of students and employees.

Just an observation. The same occurs with other groups.

Here is the original non-peer reviewed paper by Indian scientists that started the bioweapon or man-made claims. After all of the criticisms in the comments, the paper was withdrawn. The paper is titled:

Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.30.927871v1

From the authors:

This is a preliminary study. Considering the grave situation, it was shared in BioRxiv as soon as possible to have creative discussion on the fast evolution of SARS-like corona viruses. It was not our intention to feed into the conspiracy theories and no such claims are made here. While we appreciate the criticisms and comments provided by scientific colleagues at BioRxiv forum and elsewhere, the story has been differently interpreted and shared by social media and news platforms. We have positively received all criticisms and comments. To avoid further misinterpretation and confusions world-over, we have decided to withdraw the current version of the preprint and will get back with a revised version after reanalysis, addressing the comments and concerns. Thank you to all who contributed in this open-review process.
: Authors of the Manuscript

And here is an example of a criticism and there were many that were similar:

Song Yang • 3 months ago

In the supplemental Fig S2, the author mentioned that “the Bat-SARS Like CoV in the last row shows that insert 1 and 4 is very unique to Wuhan 2019-nCoV”. In fact, the Bat-SARS Like CoV, discovered in 2013, contains all the four insertions. Insertion 2 and 3 of 2019-nCoV are identical to Bat-SARS Like CoV. Insertion 1 involves two synonymous and one Thr-Ile mutation. Insertion 4 contains one synonymous mutation and a 12-bp insertion. Therefore, the two viruses have very high sequence similarity, and are likely evolutionarily related, naturally. Indeed, the four identified insertions are the result of the pair-wise comparison of Wuhan 2019-nCoV and 2013 SARS virus (Fig 1), and are an artifact when comparing only two viruses. The ‘insertions’ regions also appear in other coronavirus, as indicated in the multiple comparison in Fig.S1, possibly functionally important.

Wuhan and USAMID have been collaborating on viruses since early 1980 (starting with hanta viruses).

Ralph Baric the father of Corona Virus at UNC and Shi Zhengli and her team from Wuhan have collaborated on several studies . After 2015 when they set up the BSL4 lab that was designed by the French her work moved to Wuhan

Research has also done on bat viruses at the US Kazakhstan biolab and also at Ft Detrick which was closed for several months last year due to safety violations.

Funding for gain of function studies was halted in 2014 by Obama and lifted in 2017 by Trump. Funding has been by NIAID, NIH, DARPA, USAMID on GOF studies and synthetic creations. HHS works with BARDA to fund Big Pharma to work on vaccines for the enhanced/newly created viruses. The argument being you need to create these viruses to defend against them. Lol. Sounds like a racket

In any event, since the Special Virus Program began at the NCI in 1964 many new viruses began popping up or spreading to US . Hanta, EBV, HIV, Hep C , HHV 6-8, Ebola, Zika, ASV, HTLV, SARS, H5N1 (a synthetic one being funded that will spread easier) , XMRV, West Nile Virus, etc

And now of course COVID-19 causing virus.

You need to create these viruses to defend against them. That is precisely what you need to do. If a vaccine is the only hope, you need to get ahead of the curve. There is talk that we might have a vaccine by January. That would not be remotely possible but for all of the work that has been done on making chimeras of potential viruses. It is a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. The problem of course is making a safe enough lab. But it is a bit like arguing we can’t make a safe enough nuclear power plant so lets not do it.

Critics have argued that creation of Gain of Function, chimeric viruses is not necessary and very risky to boot in order to discover vaccines. Furthermore, Most “natural” virus infections have to date not been transmissible… the exception was the extraordinary circumstances of 1918.

At the same time bats have shown remarkable abilities to be virus resistant. So it makes sense to study them.

A national discussion is necessary in the US on how to proceed. But the overriding fact is correct as PFT states: the US and China have been research partners in this risky research. (See my post below and the NEWSWEEK expose of how Fauci and the NIH outsourced GoF research to Wuhan to evade US bans on this research)

We can’t let unscrupulous politicians and science High Priests stampede us into disastrous hostilities between the US and China. Both sides need to ‘fess up and reform.

*IF* this escaped from a lab, there is no telling how long it had been spreading before it got noticed. There is also no telling if the lab would have been aware of the escape until long after it was too late. We don’t even know if the lab was aware of this specific virus (and likely never will be).

You would need to be just Plain Stupid to be playing with a dangerous virus and encouraging it to mix with other viruses (the chimera mentioned) without having first introduced a weakness into it. This all sounds like the perfect plot for a Michel Crichton book – where people are arrogant and blind to the various but very obvious risks.

I can accept it escaped from the lab by accident directly from exposure to an infected bat. I am having real difficulty believing they were playing with this virus, encouraging a more deadly form to evolve. But then…why has this virus never emerged before? Are there no people living near the bats? Are the caves too hard to reach? Someone (not the Chinese government) should go test the villages nearest the bats to see if they are immune – before the villagers all mysteriously disappear!

It could be the Calmette or BCG vaccine – thus finding a hole in especially the US vaccination program – but also in several big european countries.

Especially the migrated population in many of the big european cities, who most of them has migrated later than the 80ies, seems to be hid hard – and they were most probably never vaccinated post immigration.

Last week NEWSWEEK blew the whole BSL-4 story sky high.

To put a fine line under this: NIH (Francis Collins) and NIAID (Fauci) outsourced “Chimeric, GoF” research to the Wuhan BSL-4, effectively pulling an end run around the US ban on this research between 2014-2017. The grant continued through 2019.

https://www.newsweek.com/dr-fauci-backed-controversial-wuhan-lab-millions-us-dollars-risky-coronavirus-research-1500741

You can review the grant and the funding history.

Take a look at the NIH grant administered by Fauci’s NIAD starting in 2014-2019
https://projectreporter.nih.gov/project_info_description.cfm?aid=9819304&icde=49711216

The grant is issued to the EcoAlliance, which operates in the US and overseas, at Wuhan. EcoAlliance specializes in Bat SARS viral research. Note the grant states:

“We will use S protein sequence data, infectious clone technology, in vitro and in vivo infection experiments and analysis of receptor binding to test the hypothesis that % divergence thresholds in S protein sequences predict spillover potential.”

Furthermore, the NEWSWEEK demolishes the flimsy cover story from “Nature Medicine” that claims the CS2 virus is 100%, pure and natural. The “Nature Medicine” research published on 17 March is a farrago of spit-ball conjectures based on the Wuhan Wet Market fairy tale, and grossly misleading straw man arguments about bio-engineering techniques.

A cheeky lay man’s takedown of the Nature Medicine propaganda written by a virologist is found here.

If anyone want to know what work took place at the Wuhan BSL-4 lab, they can subpoena all the grant reports at NIH- NIAID; interview Collins, Fauci and staff scientists, and do the same at EcoAlliance.

Recently, some medical institutions found that multiple pneumonia cases received were related to South China Seafood City. After receiving the report, the Municipal Health and Health Commission immediately carried out a case search and retrospective investigation in the city’s medical and health institutions related to South China Seafood City. Twenty-seven cases have been found , of which seven are severely ill, and the remaining cases are stable and controllable. Two cases are getting better and are scheduled to be discharged in the near future. The clinical manifestations of the case were mainly fever, a few patients had difficulty breathing, and chest radiographs showed infiltrative lesions of both lungs. At present, all cases have been treated in isolation, follow-up investigations and medical observations of close contacts are in progress, and hygienic investigations and environmental hygiene treatment of South China Seafood City are in progress.

Wuhan organized the consultation of clinical medicine, epidemiology, and virology experts in Tongji Hospital, Provincial Center for Disease Control, Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan Infectious Disease Hospital, and Wuhan Center for Disease Control, etc. , Epidemiological investigation, preliminary laboratory analysis and other aspects of the situation that the above cases are viral pneumonia. The investigation so far has found no obvious person-to-person transmission, and no medical personnel have been infected. At present, the detection of pathogens and the investigation of the cause of infection are in progress.

Viral pneumonia is more common in winter and spring, and can be sporadic or outbreaks. The main clinical manifestations are fever, body aches, a small number of breathing difficulties, and lung infiltration. Viral pneumonia is related to the virulence of the virus, the route of infection, and the age and immune status of the host. The viruses that cause viral pneumonia are commonly known as influenza viruses, and others are parainfluenza virus, cytomegalovirus, adenovirus, rhinovirus, coronavirus, etc. The diagnosis depends on etiological examination, including virus isolation, serological examination, and detection of viral antigens and nucleic acids. The disease can be prevented and controlled by preventing indoor air circulation, avoiding public places where there is no air circulation and places where people are concentrated, and wearing masks when going out. Symptomatic treatment is the main clinical practice, requiring bed rest. If you have the above symptoms, especially if your fever persists, you should go to a medical institution in time.
