Nolte: Greta Thunberg Says We Will ‘Put World Leaders Against the Wall’

Time’s “Scold of the Year,” Greta Thunberg, told a crowd in Italy that “we will make sure we put world leaders against the wall” if they do not do what she tells them to do.
On her way home, the 16-year-old Swedish eco-activist and chronic truant stopped to address a Fridays for Future gathering in Turin, Italy, at which she went the full-Fidel Castro.
“Unfortunately, we probably already know the outcome. World leaders are still trying to run away from their responsibilities but we have to make sure they cannot do that. We will make sure that we put them against the wall and they will have to do their job to protect our futures,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.
“Against the wall” is fairly common jargon in revolutions, especially youthful revolutions, and the accepted translation means executions — lots and lots of executions, specifically firing squads, where the old leaders are permanently removed by fresh-faced revolutionaries.
During the speech, and while wearing what looks like a plastic — and, therefore, a petroleum-based — yellow rain slicker, Greta shouted her usual spiel about how The Children should be in charge of everything because The Children will have to live in a future that will not exist unless we return to the Dark Ages of wind and solar power, unless we accept socialism.

The Hitchhiker’s Travel Guide describes the Marketing Department of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as:

It does appear that “up against the wall” has a different meaning in Swedish:

English translation:

It might have a PG meaning in Sweden now, but I suspect the origin even there involves guns.
This spoiled brat needs a spanking….. until she stops ranting “How dare you!”, threatening to kill people, and learns a bit of humility for her own ignorance and a heaping helping of respect for others.
Look, I am not Swedish, but I read and speak Swedish (I comprehend and read much better than I speak.) While it is fair to say that there is a more benign use of “ställa något (upp) mot väggen,” even in that particular idiomatic use, it derives from the scenario of aggression, and cornering…aggressively pinning, roughing up, searching, interrogating.
Swedes, however, sometimes use it much more literally and in the sense and context that Americans do. “Up against the wall”, for execution. this is not an uncommon or rare use, and it would not be lost on any Swede with a normal relationship to language, In Greta the child- parrot’s case, I don’t think anyone should assume she knows exactly what she is saying, but the people around her certainly do, and I am cynical enough to believe that ambiguity was intentional. that might be giving her too much credit for understanding the freight of words that come out of her mouth.

This 16 yo ignoramus is an unpleasant package. No doubt 2019 has not contributed anything in the way of her geophysical knowledge and has given her zero understanding of the philosophy of science.
Instead, she manifests a soup of neurological problems, even (as a neurologist ex-colleague of mine points out) accompanied with the classical asymmetric mouth slant of one such ingredient. She is unable and unwilling to field answers to questions, has delusions about “seeing” CO2 and is selectively mute. Of course, she is able to whip herself into a fury of indignation for an audience and it’s unfortunate no one has laughed out loud and long during any such ludicrous performances.
And what penalties do Swedish education authorities have for wilful truancy? Or has Sweden become a larger version of downtown Malmo?
Think of Malmö vs Sweden as San Francisco vs California.
Malmö is just the extrapolation of the sharp division in the population elsewhere. The subject of division is many-fold, such as CAGW and salon communism. Thoughtful middle ground is becoming a rarity, resulting in a polarization so strong and intolerant to each other, that normal peaceful means of rule becomes very difficult.
Malmö and San Francisco share some some commons. I Malmö there was recently a huge influx of “refugees” with totally different culture, habits and ideals than the traditional Swede.
The phrase can be interpreted in different ways and I see it being no better or worse than many of the statements used on either side of the CAGW issue, used by prominent and high profile persons lately. With Greta’s “accountable” statement, she is rejecting the capital punishment, but still stating severe punishment. Diplomacy is an unknown quality to particular the CAGW believers and adoption to reality is totally out of the question.
The solution:
Ban all electrical and fuel power for farming, and let the city slickers work as farm helpers and the horses pull the plows. Suddenly the they will debate next weeks weather, instead of the weather in a hundred years from now. They will beg for the tractors and combine harvesters to come into action again, go back to their factory jobs and enjoy long weekends, comfortable heated/cooled homes and commercial air travel to the Bahamas. Thereafter the CAGW is lost in Limbo.
Carl, I would see it as Sweden sharing many of the problems of Malmo. And for the same reasons. Now there are no go districts in Stockholm as a result of the “immigrant problem”. Just as in Malmo. Burnings, looting, destruction and assaults or worse. Who would be surprised if authorities in Malmo didn’t pursue the relatively minor offence of truancy. Now the disease is in the capitol and other regional cities.

Thinking about Greta on “no name” island with others of like kind is a rather pleasant thought for me at times. The flies would most certainly be the lord.
The Greta phenomenon says a great deal about the UN and it’s acolytes; for she is merely expressing the objectives of this organisation. -: Namely to take over the global levers of power with no constraint on the consequences for those who dare to challenge its agenda. It’s arrogance is unbelievable.
This organisation must be immediately starved of funds and eventually dismantled.
Voters should now require their governments to be transparent on the funds given to these institutions and called to task through the ballot box.
So she now claims it is just a translation problem. Seems that to put someone “up against the wall” in Swedish doesn’t mean to shoot them. It means to force them.
So what?? It’s still an appeal to raw threats and force, the liberal staples, and it is still as despicable. She truly thinks if people don’t do what she wants, they should be forced to do it.
And it is still despicable. She’s a snotty brat who refuses to go to school until the world changes the climate to suit her fantasies … and if we won’t do it, she’s happy to force us.

Bingo! The most innocuous interpretation is that she meant something like “put their backs to the wall”… No less of a threat.
Exactly Willis. IF you are putting people “against the wall” to do your will, that implies some means of force (at gunpoint is the commonly used method) to get them to do what you want and some kind of unpleasant consequence (using those guns) if they do not comply. It’s a threat no matter how one tries to sugarcoat it.
Luckily there is say a couple of billion brown and black people who are benefiting from an increase in energy through fossil fuel consumption and are not aware of any of this.

It is clear that putting against the wall has very aggressive connotations, even reaching the wish of death of someone by execution. But I honestly wouldn’t worry about this crazy little girl, since on some of her multiple trips on luxurious yachts around the world she will end up, naturally by some strong storm at the bottom of the sea. (And I do not wish evil on anyone).
In this particular case Greta is probably innocent and simply not very fluent in English.

Her controllers were simply careless and had failed to rehearse properly.

That is the meaning of “ställa någon mot väggen”.
I think the more appropriate equivalent of “force someone to make up their minds or to take action” is an American expression which, in Swedish for Greta’s greater good, is “Skit eller gå ur potten”
Whenever I hear “up against the wall” I mentally add “bop, bop, bop” and think of Wolfie Smith in the BBC’s Citizen Smith the incompetent revolutionary. A young Corbyn.

Crikey, going back there! I recall those comedies. All in the era of 1980’s “Thatcher”. Rick Mayall as “Rick” in “The Young Ones”, impoverished student, anti-capitalist, anti-Thatcher. Then “Alan B’stard”. Made a shedload of money. He was talented.
Greta is gonna take a holiday? Perhaps her handlers are pulling her back for more indoctrination, or maybe they’re concerned for her safety after she threatened world leaders, then tried, unsuccessfully, to explain it away.
Also, Greta is nothing more than a spider puppet in human form, a spider that spins a dream-destroying web of dread and loathing in ungrateful young people toward a world chock full of gifts their predecessors have handed them.
Maybe if she didn’t skip so many school lessons she would have realised what she was saying.

Greta and her immediate handlers (family) seem to be unaware that the media will inevitably build up the likes of herself with the express purpose of burning them down when the entertainment factor of the primary message declines ? I’d have to think she has maybe reached her apogee of value in the building up phase, and we’re witnessing the start of the tearing down phase. If so, and assuming the naivete of her enablers is correct, we can expect much more entertainment as the Greta Phenomenon lashes out in its decline.
To paraphrase the film words, ‘I’m going to need a bigger spoon’ 🙂
