‘We have lost Australia for now,’ warns climate scientist in wake of election upset
The unexpected victory of conservatives in Australia’s election is bad news for the future of global climate action.
JOE ROMM MAY 18, 2019, 3:27 PM
“Australians elected someone who once brought a lump of coal into Parliament urging us to dismiss the warnings from climate scientists, and to dig up more coal instead,” Professor Stephan Lewandowsky, an Australian cognitive scientist, told ThinkProgress in an email. “There is little doubt that his government will do precisely that.”
“We have lost Australia for now,” warned Penn State climatologist Michael Mann in an email. “A coalition of a small number of bad actors now threaten the survivability of our species,” he said.

A sad day for the climate establishment – but a great day for the rest of us.

I’ve always thought of the Australian people to be quite sensible. Every Australian tourist I’ve encountered here in the States have been quite likeable. The kind of folks I’d choose as my mates/friends. They’ve just proven themselves with this sensible vote.
Kenji,
just a reminder that in Oz:-
a) we have complusory voting ( i.e. turn up and get your name ticked off or else get a slap on the wrist fine, you can then deface the ballot paper at your leisure or not)
b) we have preferential voting so the verdict is much more representative of the broader mood of the electorate. One of the great pleasures is putting the morons and nut jobs, e.g. The Greens, LAST.
Also not that this time about 30% or more voted early, much more than usual and those votes are flowing to the Coalition significantly more than the polling day ones.
The pollsters got it sooooo wrong and at about 8:30 pm (after watching a movie) it was a very pleasant surprise to see the Coaltion lead in seats ‘won’ and the headless chicken reactions of the usual leftard commentators. Sunday was nice too as the leftards were still writhing trying to come to grips with reality (NOT their strong suit, lets face it) and today the AEC are formally predicting a majority of 77 in the Reps ( out of 151) plus a couple of extra seats in the Senate. With the postal/early vote flow that may even increase.
The other great news is that a number of divisive figures have now gone from the Coalition ranks and PM Morrison is THE MAN with a team that knows he is THE MAN. He is also a very friendly type of guy who comes across as an everyman Dad who knows his stuff and sticks to the script.
‘Scientists’ follow the facts, even the inconvenient ones, always ready to set aside theories that become untenable, without emotional investment. Mann and Lewandowsky are climate theory advocates, not scientists. No scientist with a nanogram of self respect would alter the data to suit their agenda. They have a vested interest in promoting untruth.
You have not attended scientific conferences! I mean hard physics, not climate.
Anyway the opposite of a charlatan is no way to describe a scientist.
Einstein alway said his best ideas came from the violin. He was no lieutenant Spock, the fake scientist from star-trek.
Dear Mr Mann,
Australia currently emits 1.6% of the global CO2.
They could all die tomorrow and not effect global anything, even if CO2 was a problem.
Please eff off for all our sake’s.
Yeah how dare a billion Asian and African peasants without telephones, running water or electricity criticize us. The damned cheek of it.
Not our problem they aren’t Australian citizens tell them to take it up with there own government who are usually the problem being corrupt and stealing the countries wealth.
Not been to Africa have you?
Yep, the world should be providing them with SOLID, DEPENDABLE COAL-FIRED electricity.
That is what ALL developed countries grew with.
Loydo…..
As long as they keep burning coal and oil, those billion asians make Australia’s contribution to gerbil warming, irrelevant.
It’s not us claiming that those billion asians should be content to remain in poverty in order to pacify first-world virtue-signallers who wouldn’t recognise hardship if it hit them on the arse.

amazingly they seem to have a lot of mobiles over there iin africa and asians sure arent without a mobile glued to the ear either.
they WOULD have power and water IF the un and IMF would stop being a$$holes and witholding development funding for coal powered plants.
Funny, considering how it’s your crowd who wants to make sure that they remain without water and electricity.

Thinking Australians know that you can only try to help your fellow humans on this planet IF you have a strong economy and can afford to try and help. Australians in this regard have been punching well above our economic weight for years, due mainly to the willingness of the Australian public to dip into their own pockets and contribute, particularly in times of disaster. As the economy and influence of Australia grew, the Government had the means to distribute monies to other nations in overseas aid.
Then along comes a wailing cursing emotion based tide of loonies like yourself who try to tell us that we have to destroy our economy, abandon our way of life that earned us the title of “The Lucky Country” to wear sackcloth and atone for our SIN of being a small population with a small emission of C02.
Forget that we supply huge quantities of food eagerly sought by Asia, and our vast continent relies on trucking and Diesel fuel to move that food to ports and our plants like C02, we just have to have stored water in Dams and we can supply even more.
We woke up to your lazy latte sipping city dwelling scheme to first divide us into small warring camps, rake up issues that have been long dead and buried through two world wars by encouraging the worst slackers to be activists and giving yourself an elitist “selfie” tag as “progressive intellectual” scorning the values that united Australians fought and died for, the principle of freedom of choice for ALL and the freedom to be free of tyranny and embrace the immigrants that came to our shores to escape that life overseas.
We love our country and want to see it prosper, to live in harmony as Australians, and we elected a government we chose and rejected a Government that was intent on wrecking and reducing our economy to the point that we could no longer look after those that need help in our own community, imposing burdens on small business and attacking the savings of older Australians for some huge social change.
Well we like our lifestyle, we like our culture, we like to volunteer our services. Tony Abbott was a great volunteer and the only real politician that pledged to spend time with aboriginal families to help them by helping themselves. And the majority of us did not like the hate and vilification your lot of elites heaped on him that sustained hate and the outside influence of so many made it hard for him to retain his parliamentary seat, he will still be supported by the thinkers who reject your elite self given titles!.
Hardly surprising that we rejected your snivelling PC lot in those circumstances. Scott Morrison is a beacon of hope that we can regain dignity and family values as central to political will. All power to him and his government to reinstate central conservative values.
With a strong economy and a strong leader we can help other nations by example through volunteers and direct aid to help poorer nations to lift themselves out of poverty!
And your soon to lose Canada as well!!
“…now threaten the survivability of our species”
That right there is some serious psychological wackery. It is impossible that Australia or New Zealand doing anything regarding CO2, could possibly affect the world average temperature 0.00C over 100 years.
Not Possible.
Both of these fools need to retire to the comfy chair.
Are you kidding? Put them in their place. That’s the rack.
If he really believes what he wrote, Mann needs some professional help. His comment indicates a serious detachment from reality.
The hockeystick of climate action shows a divergence problem…
Time to graft another graph onto it and hide the decline.
The climate establishment in Australia is well established within the public service, academia, the state funded media, those that know their crap doesn’t stink and the list goes on. ScoMo has an uphill battle to turn things around. Our state governments still think that the solution to our sky high electricity is more ruinables.
Vic govt said our power costs were high due to “GOLDPLATING” overspending encouraged BY govvy handouts by powercos…now were told our bills will rise (AFTER being told theyd drop) because the grids need upgrading
As the chant ” Reach Higher! Reach Higher! Reach Higher! coming from the Green New Deal advocates echoed around Parliament in Melbourne back in March, a chill ran down my spine, as I waited for the youths to break into “Father Land” Father Land”
When children are advanced as the ambassadors of anything you just know the leaders of the cult are delusional.
Thank god the Australians are waking up to the scam of Mann made climate change.
They can never let up on the “climate emergency” rhetoric. They know that if it ever comes out that the whole lot was a load of baloney from day one, heads will roll. The insane measures that were brought to the voters to vote on (without costings presented-only feeble excuses of what price for the planet) were met with a thumbs down. We are not all dung beetles-we don’t all swallow the bullshit.
For the climate alarmists out there who constantly tell us wind energy is the answer to our future carbon free electricity generation, please go to gridwatch.co.uk and see how much energy the UK’s 21 gigawatt fleet of wind turbines has put into the grid this past two weeks. Look at the graphs for yesterday and for this whole month.
Then ask yourself what energy source is capable of delivering constant supply in a crowded, reasonably flat land with 70 million inhabitants?
Here is a hint, it is not wind, it is not solar, and no battery system will ever provide weeks of demand energy when the wind powered charging turbines don’t turn.
The only people still believing Mann made climate change exists, are those who haven’t spotted the additional “n” in the calculations.
They’ll be getting a visit from the climate angel Greta Thunberg, and Extinction Rebellion activists will be gluing themselves to doors.
I was greatly heartened by the rejection by the “average” Australians of the lunatic mantra of the elite leftist Church of Climatology. Maybe we can be optimistic that reason may prevail after all. Watching the ABC coverage you might have thought that a great sadness had descended upon the world!
You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
Not sure if Mr. Lincoln really coined that gem, however it’s implicit wisdom is timeless.
Lewandowsky: “The peasants are revolting!
Mann: “They sure are.”
+ 1’000
A small number, like half of the voters of Australia? I see what kind of political system would suit mr Mann. One without democracy and possibility to make coalitions.
Bad actors, these people getting annoyed on more expensive energy? Surely mr Mann, I understand it is difficult for you to understand when you fly and bath in climate fame and money, plebs might not be happy when their energy bills grow.
Threaten our species? A small number of Australians threatens the biggest communist Climate Champion China? You must be joking, mr Mann. Australians don’t threaten even your income, mr Mann, while your lot threatens sacked Australian professor Ridd’s income.
Some common alarmist conceptions:
* “Hated people” are a small number of people (but there are lot of them in Texas and Alabama)
* They’re paid by big oil some big money and make a unduely big impact on policies
* Scientists are attacked by “hated people” in an organized way
* The audience is mislead by “hated people”
Realist position
* Alarmists man (add your favourite non-gendered verb) all Western government owned media, large part of the private media, several parties in each country’s political system, bigger part of the NGO’s and some states (like large parts of the US east coast).
* Alarmists are paid big money by governments and private companies and make an unduely big impact on policies.
* Scientists who have the nerve publish non-alarmist data and support it publicly, are severely and professionally attacked to ruin their careers.
* The audience is mislead by alarmists to support policies that provably will not help.
After writing this, I understand well how alarmists won’t debate the “hated people”
People coming to their senses. Finally.

The Green blob re. CC has nothing to do with Saving the Planet, its all about power. Why otherwise does the political party, the Australian Labour Party founded in about 1870 by workers, and still owned by the Union s 50 %, campaign against the development of the Adani coalmine, with the potential for 1000 jobs in Queensland.
And while PM Morrison won the lower house, the Greens have 9 members in the upper house, the Senate. Thus with the Labour Party and the Green Independents , can block any meaningful legislation from the PM, to improve the economy.
This government will be a Steady as you go, because its not possible to get things done.
Queensland State has a Labour Government, its Premier makes noises about the Adani mine to keep the people outside the Capital happy, , but its Deputy Premier makes noses in the Capital to keep the left wing voters happy..
Australia is in effect two countries, and its near impossible to keep all of them happy.

oi oi oi for the 2nd time tonight
looks like a whole lot of Aussies are smarter than Mann and Lewandowsky – how does he get to work for thinktank – seriously?
These two were fully expecting Australia would fall in-line. The next 3 years are crucial. I hope not to see the political pantomime of the last 15 years. I can hope however, I don’t see it happening.
I think it will go well beyond 3 years now. Liberals will not want open the climate change box again and labor will be very careful to cost and flesh out any climate change policy for the next election. It was already announced Plibersek had to pull out of leader race because she is fatally damaged by her Adani and climate stance.
So you really are looking well after the next election before labor would really consider even trying to put up any strong climate policy. Both parties will enter the next election with wish-washy junk if the issue is still around. So 5 years minimum before anything will happen in Australia.

whoops – read that 2 quickly – he likely does not work for a thinktank – even worse – what kind of cognition is going on in Lewandowsky’s brain? not a lot I’d suggest and totally no idea how science works – but neither does Mann have any idea about applying the scientific method
We can only hope that the “The Cult of Righteousness” will let the rest of Australians get on with their lives without having to listen to, or conform to, their looney ideas about climate change and what should be done to combat it. Australias national broadcaster (the ABC) and the Greens Political Party are two members of the cult who have been preaching to us for far too long.
lets hope they cut staff at abc clean out all the older sjw climate warrior types
as it is theyre repeating shows so often i can almost sing along
the angst from them and their devotees has been enjoyable to hear
next up?

what happened?
“A coalition of a small number of bad actors now threaten the survivability of our species…”
A classic case of projection!
There was a mention in the replies about the Democrats wanting to ban Guns. Well we in Australia consider that the bit in the US Construction was actually only meant to refer to what we in Australia call the Army Reserve.
Also while I consider that PM Howard’s violent reaction of the shooting incident in Tasmania was well” Over the top”, it did not remove all firearms in Australia, only the semi-auto weapons.
In fact for every semi auto destroyed and the owner paid for it, most then bought two firearms of the still legal bolt action weapons, which while requiring a degree of skill to use it, are a far better weapon. and are far more accurate.
According to the Japans war dairies of WW2 concerning Australia and the possibility of it being invaded, was that the Army said no, as their reports said that all Australian males were expert marksmen.
The plague of rabbits in Australia back then , and the fact that a .22 bolt action rifle fed a lot of families in Australia during the long 1930 tees Great Depression. One small bullet per rabbit taught people to take their time and become accurate shooters.
For the record I am pro Firearms and had to hand in some 29 weapons.
Just because the Liberal National team won does not mean that CC
will go away. There are still some Liberals, the remains of ex PM. Turrnbulls gang who “Believe in CC”
The Lib-Nets are still locked into the original Kyoto 26 % of emissions, plus the big subsidies and the utilities having to accept the Renewable output. This is despite our 1.3 % of CO2 emissions , plus Australia’s sheer size including the shallow seas around it creats a giant sized Carbon Sink.
Unless Morrison uses the previously mentioned “”Big Stick”” against the greedy Utilities , plus getting rid of the subsidies and the law which compels the Utilities to accept the electricity from the windmills and solar panels, his Government will possible have a “Paris” style situation.
His basic problem is his bias towards big business, and today the Green Blob is Big Business.
