Extreme weather and dire climate reports are intensifying the mental health effects of global warming: depression and resignation about the future.

When the U.N. released its latest climate report in October, it warned that without “unprecedented” action, catastrophic conditions could arrive by 2040.
For Amy Jordan, 40, of Salt Lake City, a mother of three teenage children, the report caused a “crisis.”
“The emotional reaction of my kids was severe,” she told NBC News. “There was a lot of crying. They told me, ‘We know what’s coming, and it’s going to be really rough.’ “
She struggled too, because there wasn’t much she could do for them. “I want to have hope, but the reports are showing that this isn’t going to stop, so all we can do is cope,” she said.
The increasing visibility of climate change, combined with bleak scientific reports and rising carbon dioxide emissions, is taking a toll on mental health, especially among young people, who are increasingly losing hope for their future. Experts call it “climate grief,” depression, anxiety and mourning over climate change.
Last year, the American Psychological Association issued a report on climate change’s effect on mental health. The report primarily dealt with trauma from extreme weather but also recognized that “gradual, long-term changes in climate can also surface a number of different emotions, including fear, anger, feelings of powerlessness, or exhaustion.”
In the last few months, a string of reports have delivered dire warnings. The U.N. report said the worst effects — such as the flooding of coastal areas caused by rising sea levels, drought, food shortages and more frequent and severe natural disasters — could arrive as soon as 2040. In November, the Trump administration released a report with similarly alarming findings. Both reports said cutting greenhouse gas emissions could still avert many of these effects, but a study earlier this month found that after holding steady from 2014 to 2016, emissions rose in 2017 and are on course to hit an all-time high in 2018.
The reports came amid a string of powerful natural disasters, including some that wiped out entire communities, such as Paradise, California, incinerated by the Camp Fire, and Mexico Beach, Florida, washed away by Hurricane Michael.
According to a Yale survey taken this year, anxiety is rising in the U.S. over the climate. Sixty-two percent of people surveyed said they were at least “somewhat” worried about the climate, up from 49 percent in 2010. The rate of those who described themselves as “very” worried was 21 percent, about double the rate of a similar study in 2015. Only 6 percent said humans can and will reduce global warming.
Dr. Lise van Susteren, a psychiatrist in Washington and co-founder of the Climate Psychiatry Alliance, said it’s becoming harder for patients to ignore the threats of climate change.
“For a long time we were able to hold ourselves in a distance, listening to data and not being affected emotionally,” she said. “But it’s not just a science abstraction anymore. I’m increasingly seeing people who are in despair, and even panic. “
A 10-Step Program for Climate Grief
After the U.N. report was released, Jordan looked for a way to help her children cope. She saw a sign at her church for a support group that deals with the issue, the Good Grief Network.
Founded by Aimee Reau, 30, and LaUra Schmidt, 32, Good Grief offers a 10-step program to help people deal with collective grief — issues that affect a whole society, like racism, mass shootings and climate grief.
The program runs as a 10-week cycle, each weekly meeting tackling a different step. It’s currently in its third cycle in Salt Lake City and is also running online. The steps encourage participants to confront their climate fears and sadness and acknowledge that they are part of the problem as polluters in a carbon-fueled system, but also find the motivation and strength to be part of the solution.
“What helps people is building community, talking openly about the problem and how it affects them,” Schmidt told NBC News. “There’s a lot of pain about the climate people are bottling up.”
For Jordan, who works as an interpreter of American Sign Language, the program has been helpful.
“Grieving with other people is so healing, being able to talk openly and cry it out,” she said. “We look each other in the eye and say, ’this is really happening.’ ”
Jordan plans to bring the program back to her family and hopes that it will help her kids cope. “They express sadness over the loss of animal species and anxiety over the unknown, like if there will be enough food in the future and where people displaced by rising seas will live,” she said.
In September, Reau and Schmidt presented their program at Uplift Climate, an annual conference on climate change for people under 30, held entirely outdoors. This year’s event was held in New Mexico’s Cibola National Forest.

“Is this the climate change depression session?” asked Kelton Manzanares, 27, from Utah.
“You’re in the right place,” replied Schmidt. Manzanares took his place in the circle of about 20 people in a patch of grass.
Schmidt asked participants what they wanted to get out of the session.
“Hope,” said one woman.
“Empowerment,” said another.
“It’s OK to feel sadness, grief and despair,” Schmidt told the group. “We’ll aim to normalize those hard feelings.”
Manzanares explained that drought has hit his community hard. Springs that were once flowing are now dry. Hungry and thirsty cattle are ruining once pristine land by scrounging for nourishment wherever they can find it. “I feel like I’m in a state of mourning or grieving when I think about it,” he said.
Bill McKibben, a climate activist for over 30 years who runs the climate advocacy organization 350.org, said groups like Good Grief can be an effective way to deal with climate grief.
“We can’t just be individuals, we need to join together and be a movement,” he said in an interview. “It makes you less grief-stricken. The best antidote to feeling powerless is activism. It doesn’t make you less sad, but adds hope, solidarity and love.”
Even though the latest U.N. report was a “kick in the stomach” for him, he cautioned that those experiencing existential grief over climate change are not its main victims. “It’s poor communities with flimsy homes that are washing away,” he said.
Distraught Over Having Kids
Almost all of the young people interviewed for this article said they were struggling with the ethical implications of having children.
“I’m definitely not having kids,” said Marcela Mulholland, 21, a student at the University of Florida in Orlando and a participant in the Uplift session. “I don’t have hope that we will avoid climate catastrophe. The changes that need to happen aren’t happening.”
Jordan said she used to talk with her kids about becoming parents someday. “I’d say, ‘You’ll be such a good dad.’ Now, it feels wrong. They don’t talk about it anymore either,” she said.
Antonia Cereijido, 26, a radio producer in New York City, is conflicted. “If I did have kids, they would have the worst life ever,” she said. But an environmental scientist told her that raising a climate-conscious child could be better than not having a child. “That did wonders for my anxiety, hearing that from a scientist. So now I’m not sure.”
At Uplift, Manzanares, who was about to become a father, said having a baby gives him hope. “It’s the most positive affirmation I can make about the future,” he said. “We aren’t giving up. This is a multigenerational problem.”

The left’s solution to everything. Do they serve Kool-Aid? If so, you’d better ask “What’s in this drink?”
join other sheep
or become a lemming?
all this sort of behavior does is reinforce their dose of stupid
stop it! is way and above brilliant advice

Good to know these people are removing themselves from the gene pool.
Here comes your climate nervous breakdown
I’ll be 71 in February and I’ve heard all this doomsday BS before, in the 60’s we were going to die in an atomic nightmare, in the 70’s, the coming ice age. I forget what the doomsday was in the 80’s and 90’s because I stopped listening I had too much living to do to worry about dying but I know there was something because there’s always something. This particular hysteria has lasted longer then most but it too will pass. I blame the gullible parents for most of the problems claimed to be affecting young people. If they had let them be kids and let them suffer defeats etc. they would be more resilient and not the namby-bamby snowflakes that surround us.
The sad thing is children are being damaged in order to advance adult political goals. That’s child abuse.
If parents knowingly allow or encourage such abuse, they are guilty as well.
Here in Australia the Australian Psychological Society is peddling the loony CC™. I have written to them saying that I am often called upon to help do the opposite of what they suggest, eg de-program CC™ victims, and that I am aware of at least two members of their organisation who are doing the same. Without naming them of course.
We need not only a comprehensive program, but because one approach does not necessarily suit every victim, there needs to be some method of collecting information on successes and failures. I now have a bit more time and fewer commitments, so I will make a start. I would need to involve at least one psychologist, but I guess that would need to be someone older, independent or retired. the two I am aware of who are helping are younger, so might risk their careers by participating.
Remember when the mad rights advocate Dr Patrick McGorry wasted his Australian of the Year acceptance speech banging on about the most urgent threat to public health since continental drift?
CliScep does.
“The Silence is Settled”: Breaking the Science on Climate Change
and isnt that last sentence telling?
young ones who speak up risk their career
warmist meme mentality then says the elders speaking up “had it all” and have white or other “priveledge” and should be ignored
same as in so many fields where science/authority by concensus /status quo, is used as control and a weapon against others
What they actually have is what could be called “Climate Neurosis”, and is caused mainly by years of being bombarded with Alarmist climate propaganda, and also by guzzling the Klimate Koolade. Maybe they enjoy their neuroses, and wear them as a badge of honor, making them martyrs for the Climate Cause. But they should take Bob Newhart’s advice and just STOP IT!
It’s like these people are reading a Stephen King horror novel and can’t tell that it’s not real.
I think you have reached THE DEAD ZONE of DESPERATION. INSOMNIA will soon follow. It and I say IT can only lead to MISERY so don’t make ROSE MADDER by calling her on your CELL.
You must take THE STAND and walk THE GREEN MILE towards THE SHINING light (don’t worry it’s not a FIRESTARTER).
But CARRIE on.
PS. Has anyone seen my dog, CUJO around SALEM’S LOT?

I’m pretty sure I saw him down at the PET CEMETERY 🙂
CHRISTINE said the same thing. Was he behind THE DARK TOWER? %^)
You spelt Sematary rong.
I have no climate change anxiety.
I’m in denial.
“I’m in denial.”
What’s the water like?
Warm!
Full of crocodiles
Crocodiles, all the way down.
Trigger warning, a few colorful expressions ahead:
Imagine the giddy relief these poor scared bastards are going to feel when they learn it’s all bullshit and that they’ve been lied to for an entire generation by people claiming to be scientists, leaders and experts. Imagine how amused they’ll be to find out they believed people who couldn’t tell their ass from a Greenpeace activist.
Oh, wait, maybe they’ll get mad when they learn that. Maybe they’ll start reaching for their pitchforks and clubs. The French are crazy enough that the yellow vest mobs might even be tempted to start dusting off the old madam le guillotine. Now, are we SURE that none of our American climate scientists don’t want to go over and practice their dark magic in Paris, as Macron has invited? Won’t you go, please?
I feel another blow is coming for EU CAGW types. I think the Germans are going to start openly protecting their car industry and rejecting the EU rules on emissions and crap like that. They don’t want their awesome car companies ruined by EU meddling, subsidies, and market twisting of forced electric vehicles. For sure, Mercedes and BMW and Audi might build a few hybrids or all electric plug ins. But these cars will be extremely expensive, and not many people in the world will be able to afford them. In the end, they need to export gasoline and diesel powered cars for their bottom lines. This is one industry that helps Germany fund the EU welfare state. If Germany doesn’t sell cars, there might not be any money for the EU at all. So if they kill this industry, Germans might just become as reactionary as the French are being. And if they DON’T kill it, and keep on selling really well built ICE cars, and thumbing their noses at CO2 regulations, then this will be just another nail in the coffin of CAGW belief for some of the more gullible Europeans (why did I just flash on the name Griff, just then?). It should be interesting to watch.
its that rage against the crap I was also fed as a teenager just like these poor bastards now that has me so vocal and irate with the warmists
I figure ive spent 9 yrs now fighting and will have maybe 20 to keep battling this idiocy, and im NOT going to stop until theyre exposed for the lying self interested mongrel sods they are. I hope many end up losing jobs and positions and get jail and public shaming for their actions and damage to so many
It’s called living in a dystopia.
After the ravages of Savile, Hillsborough, bloody sunday, then constant bombardment by Mcgrath, Attenborough, Hulot, Royale and now Macron, and of course the European parliament, the natural reaction of sane people (that rare stuff called common sense…) is to recognise we are living in a world that has gone mad.
The inmates are running the asylum, while the window dressing of “GDPR” was driving a STASI like coach and horses through all of it.
No wonder people are acting like deer blinded by car headlights.
They are told one thing by the BBC, then told the complete opposite 5 mins later.
Our poor kids. What a world to be brought up in.
On one side, Putin with his hyper zapping monster missiles, on the other side the schools and hospitals are falling down. (I have a Russian family).
Then, on the other side, we are told Trump is now best mates with Mr Nutcase NK dictator who executed his uncle with an anti aircraft gun, and has managed to shake up an entire mountain with a nuke of 200kT.
I am not as optimistic as our 71 yr old friend.
There’s a few nutters who have made their mark in history.
One of them tried to invade Russian in 1810-15.
He wasn’t alone.
We have some alcoholic nutcases currently running the EU commission who were stupid enough to appoint an Enarque to handle Brexit…
You couldn’t make it up!
Horror novel?
The only true British escape route is to LAUGH!
One friend of mine always said the British could never become a dictatorship because of the inefficiency of the bureaucracy.
I hold less hope for the rest of Europe.
Tipping Points !!
There has been so much tipping that I expect a raid by the IRS at any moment
It’s a sad, sad world.
Gore, Mann, et al have much to answer for!
They have achieved global brainwashing supreme!
It appears the only thing that the BBC actually reports truthfully is prefaced by “SAILING BY” and finished with the national anthem.
Anything between the morning version and the evening one needs to be treated with the profoundest suspicion, with the possible exception of the early morning “farming today”.
An article on historical instances of mass psychogenic illness (mass hysteria) would be interesting. Some wild stuff. The French meowing nuns. LOL.

i’m so distraught. think i’ll get two more fingers of blanton’s
of blanton’s or on baton 🙂
They have created whole generations of Charlie Browns.
I myself am grief stricken. I am grief stricken because the power-mad, money-loving global warming pushers are causing real and true environmental catastrophes to go unresolved. Catastrophes like acres and acres of farmland, prairies, and forests being replaced with mined aluminum, energy-expensive concrete, toxic chemicals, and energy-expensive rare earth metals. And doing all that is called being green.
Catastrophes like the pollution at lithium mines and neodymium mines in China.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_UdqZdFr-w&w=560&h=315%5D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_UdqZdFr-w
Catastrophes like the polluted Ganges River. Catastrophes like illegal poaching in Africa. And I could go on. Real and true environmental problems are unresolved while billions upon billions are being put into the pockets of advocates who tell us the only solution to a problem whose only proof requires the ad populum logical fallacy is for me (not them) to give up money and rights. When I think of how many birds have to die in windfarms, it causes me grief. When I see litter on the side of the road because people are too inconsiderate to use a trash can, it causes me grief. When I think of how many people do not have access to clean drinking water, it causes me grief. But what causes me anger is knowing that the money is being spent on climate change instead of on real environmental problems.
These people are sick. They need to seek professional help – no, really. They’re likely to have serious mental issues when ACTUAL crises arrive in their lives. And they surely will. Sigh.
The Establishment keep screaming at us that we are going to have more heatwaves, longer heatwaves, hotter heatwaves.
So I look at the official data from my home town of Melbourne. The evidence is simply not there.
Here is a time series showing the hottest temperature reached each year from the Melbourne Regional site, which was closed down in 2015 and the different climatology of Olympic Park commenced. The same pattern of no crisis is found when I look at heatwaves over the years of 1, 3, 5, 10 consecutive days duration. Or, if I look at the number of days each year above the old Century mark.
Why is Melbourne so outstandingly exempt from the Establishment scares? Well, it is not, because I did not find much evidence to be frightened by the past heatwave records of Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane or Hobart either.
Therefore, as a logical, scientific person I concluded that there is little to fear when evidence does not support the official narrative (except fear for the future of observational science). Geoff
http://www.geoffstuff.com/melb_hottest_days.jpg
At the top of the graph it says “1957 to 2018” instead of 1857 to 2018.
Melbourne appears to follow the global pattern, i.e., the 1930’s were as warm or warmer than subsequent years.
That is the true global temperature profile. The “hotter and hotter” bogus, bastardized Hockey Stick chart represent a false temperature profile and is the chief lie in the promotion of the CAGW fraud.
It was as warm or warmer in the 1930’s, on a worldwide basis than it is today. That means that the Alarmists are wrong and we are NOT experiencing unprecedented levels of warmth today since it is no warmer today than then, and it also means that the current phase of warming beginning in 1980 could be caused entirely by Mother Nature, no CO2 required, since we reached the same level of warmth in the 1930’s without the assistance of CO2 because CO2 was not considered a factor during that time, and that’s even according to the Alarmists.
The bogus, bastardized Hockey Stick charts are the “evidence” the Alarmists use to push the Lie of CAGW. Therefore, the creators of this false reality should be singled out for the harm they have done to the human race by promoting these lies. They should be put on public display for the liars they are.
So some people are literally driving themselves insane worrying about the climate…
I’m sorry, not my problem – I don’t really have much pity and no solution for willingly self-inflicted wounds.
If the predictions and projections of the fearmongers were coming true… I still would be skeptical that Man had anything to do with it. I’m unconvinced that we did anything that got us out of this last Ice Age…no matter what Mann says.
I do not think that people with no scientific wherewithal, which includes pretty much all children, can be accurately described as having done this to themselves.
In general, I am not onboard with the victimization meme, but I think in this case we have some honest to goodness victims.
The greatest incidence of mass hysteria in history.
When I was a kid, young folks were all anxious about nuclear war, and that had a much greater probability of happening.
“The greatest incidence of mass hysteria in history.”
Yes, mass delusion, in the information age.
Why has this happened? Because those who are perpetrating the false reality of CAGW have control of all of society’s information sources and they have been spewing these lies for decades practically unopposed in the public square. They have been very successful at deluding millions of people, some to the point of panic.
This Information Monopoly has a couple of problems though: They don’t control *all* the information. There are still voices like WUWT who try to stick to the facts. And they don’t control the temperatures.
While CO2 keeps increasing the temperatures are falling. That’s not what the CAGW speculation says should happen. It should be getting hotter with more CO2 in the atmosphere, but it’s not getting hotter, it’s getting cooler.
Since the El Nino high temperature reached in Feb. 2016, the global temperature has *cooled* by about 0.6C. The Alarmists only hope is that the temperatures start to climb again, but it may be a while.
After the previous high temperature in the El Nino year of 1998 (0.1C cooler than Feb. 2016, a statistical tie) cooled off, it took 18 years before the temperature climbed back to that level again in 2016. So the Alarmists may be in for a long wait before they can start chanting “hotter and hotter” again.
Here’s a UAH satellite temperature chart. See for yourself just how much the temperatures have cooled since 2016. Ask the Alarmists how they explain this cooling in the face of increased CO2.
Well, I think it’s a good sign really.
I have no wish for anyone to be depressed or anxious, but however much they would like to, they simply cannot change the weather with carbon taxes or bans on SUVs and plastic bags. The sooner they resign themselves to this, the sooner they may be able to control their anxieties and the better for all of us.
If they experience any feelings of anger during this process I think they ought to consider directing their anger towards the people who have actually made it their life’s work to frighten others with pseudo-scientific fairy tales about global warming. And often do so for good money, I might add. The wages of sin are still pretty good in climate science.
Even now, at Christmas, BBC activists have been concocting an outrageous list of recent bad weather events to be blamed on global warming. And this is done while simultaneously quoting climate charlatan Michael Mann as some kind of authority, the man responsible for the most nefarious piece of scientific fraud since Piltdown Man over a century ago and yet far more economically damaging. The wider effect of that on science is the “climate grief” I am suffering.
Egads! The snowflakes are getting reeeally drifty, eh?
The left thrives on manufactured social, economic and environmental problems in order to sustain it’s politics.
This is same nonsense the Left pulled on the 1980’s over “nuclear winter”. St Elsewhere even ran an episode in which a young boy had recurring nightmares about it. Shameless scare tactics.
