The SMH has published a letter from students explaining why they have decided to go on strike. But in my opinion this strike action is a symptom of a deeper malaise within the Australian education system.

Why we’re striking from school over climate change inaction

By Harriet O’Shea Carre & Milou Albrecht

It seems ridiculous that children have got to the point where they realise that the adults who are supposed to be in charge aren’t doing enough to protect our futures from dangerous climate change. So, we have decided to strike from school to show them that this simply isn’t good enough.

There are already so many solutions to climate change but our politicians aren’t doing enough to put them in place. Instead, they are approving massive new coal mines, such as Adani’s, that will wreck our future. As children, we are going to be living in this hot world far longer than the adults. This is just not fair.

We feel sorry for the future generations who don’t even get a say in the world that we’re creating, who will have to deal with even more extreme weather, who will never get to see the Great Barrier Reef and other threatened icons and species.

Remember back when schools were places of education? Nowadays far too many schools in Australia have become places of indoctrination rather than places of learning.

From what I have seen those poor kids have likely had their minds twisted by years of relentless Australian climate propaganda, force fed to them by teachers and other authority figures.

You reap what you sow. The children are simply carrying their educational brainwashing to its logical but false conclusion; what is the point of attending school or doing your homework, if the world is about to end?

The obvious solution is to bring back school inspectors. But th left sucessfully got rid of them years ago. Now the left wing effectivelly controls the whole of what passes as State Education.

We will just have to wait for severe winter weather and the Electricity supply failing.

What will our students do when the power goes off ?

Children can learn basic literacy sitting on a tin can in a mud hut.
Australia is ranked 39 out of 41 countries from the EU and OECD in levels of quality education for children.
Australia is ahead of only Romania and Turkey in rates of basic learning skills for children aged 15-years-old based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test.
Most Australian schools are left-wing swamps or heading in that direction.
More money = less literacy because most teachers care about teachers and not what matters to prospective employers (and most importantly the students).

‘Employers’? Next you’ll be talking about ‘economics’. /sarc

The public funded teachers and media have no real concept of ’employers’ or for-profit businesses, they really don’t know about them and don’t understand their operation, necessities or priorities, and nor does the public media. They have no clue about it and care a lot less than they know.

In the mid 1990s a good friend of mine who was married to a teacher decided among themselves that they were going to (secretly) match-make me with this really cute little teacher they had found for me. So, unbeknown to me, I met and talked with this girl. And when asked, “Who’s your employer?” (and those were the words she used), I showed her my business card and said that I ran my own business. And I was then stunned to discover that she thought that running an actual for-profit business was a highly suspect thing to be doing for a living, and basically ridiculed the idea of running a business.

So, a bit peeved by this (but hiding it) I asked her what she did for a living, and in a very haughty tone she announced to me that her, and all of her friends sitting with us, were all “Teachers”. She obviously thought this was a much superior way to make money.

Yeah, anyway I never asked her out, and not entirely successfully avoided her (she just couldn’t believe that I was just rejecting her).

It was clear that she and her apparently enlightened and noble girlfriends had no idea about business at all, and held it in contempt! So my opinion and expectation of ‘Teachers’ has reflected that ever since, and they have never failed to live up to that low estimate of them.

I strongly suspect the problem of these deeply-ignorant and arrogant Teacher’s is rooted in the nonsense view-of-the-word that they’re being taught at the Teacher’s College level, because this girl was only a few years out of college at that point, she was 24, and in her first job. She was a JCU Diploma of Teaching graduate, so goodness knows what claptrap they were getting told about reality, employment, business and economy that lead to her thinking that way about business.

The funny thing was my mate who was secretly setting me up with her also ran a proper small-business and employed ~6 people. His wife didn’t have a problem with business but she was about 15 years older, and she had also owned and operated a small coffee shop because she didn’t want to be a teacher any longer, the business flopped, so she went back to teaching again. So she at least understood business, and how tough it could be.

But most teachers are generally clueless and inexperienced about the way other people earn a living, they operate in a bubble of tax-funded plenty, they don’t need to learn and understand the way the Private sector works, to fund their Salary. So it’s not all that surprising (to me) that they’re teaching ignorant and actually damaging world-views and unrealistic expectations to people’s children. Or pulling outlandish stunts like this one.

Given they generally don’t understand the real world, and are unlikely to soon, they need to be made to stick to the program, or else, get fired. And I’m sure it’s in their work contracts right now, to do that.

At least they would understand that their actions have repercussions for failing.

But the Staffing at Teacher’s Colleges will be the source of this absurd mentality that has developed within Australian teachers.

Great anecdote.

My one and only blind date was when I was invited out by some friends, following a painful separation from my now ex wife. I was about 28 years old.

They ‘coincidentally’ invited a friend of theirs, a stunning, 5′ 10″ tall air hostess who, under any other circumstances, I would have considered well out my league. But as it was a social occasion as far as we were both aware, neither of us harboured any expectation, so from the moment we met we got on like a house on fire.

We dated for a short time but as often is the case, our respective personal circumstances meant it was never to be.

That was nearly 40 years ago, and on occasions I still wonder what happened to her. It would however, never have worked as she was a 100 mph character and I was, and still am, far too laid back and lazy, we would have driven each other mad.

But man, was she ever gorgeous. Picture the stereotypical glamorous, confident, long legged female air crew member, then add in a large dollop of a funny, intelligent, enchanting character, with no airs and graces, an erotic imagination, and you have the perfect woman for we more feeble minded males. Also for the more robust minded males, and for some women as well…….. ~ahem~ She wasn’t shy about reciting some of her encounters on layovers.

I’m sure there must be some scientific rigour relative to our relationship, if not my post might be deleted by a mod as inappropriate. 🙂

Considering what these children are learning about “climate change”, it is actually beneficial to them if they go on strike!

Finishing up with Soylent Green by the sounds of it. We know kiddies have to eat their greens but you don’t have to be sadistic and completely over the top with it doomsdayers.

There are few school kids in the world who wouldn’t benefit enormously from an extra hour per day spent learning and using mathematics. I expect Australians are no different. With these particular ones I recommend two extra hours per day. After a while you won’t need to spend much time telling them how much rubbish they have been taught about global warming because most of them will start to figure it out for themselves. The natural curiosity, inquisitiveness and rebelliousness of youth will already be there. All that is lacking is some of the intellectual tools that even a modest grounding in mathematics will furnish them with.

Obviously it won’t work with every student. After all, Gavin Schmidt was a mathematician too. In fact he probably still is. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that your bank balance tends to increase once you start to publicly profess a loud belief in the alleged dangers of global warmin’ as caused by carbon dioxide. Every professional politician can also do that kind of financial arithmetic.

“Although the political dynamics make radical change difficult, strong leadership can and should prevail in the fight against catastrophic climate change. Despite the immediate negative economic impact, we all need to take a longer view.

— Aiden, age 8

“People need to do the things they need to do individually to ensure the sustainability of the planet. But we must also demand that our elected representatives take action. Where risk is great, so are the benefits of addressing them.

— Brittany, age 7

“Due to the enormity of the threat, and the unwillingness of the citizenry to do what’s needed, we may need a temporary suspension of democratic governmental systems.

Below is as an add hopefully the link works.

Harriet 14 says she is worried in a world where the rain is a novelty but severe storms are the new normal. Now she might be talking about sand storms if so dont worry about the bush fires. Maybe I am missing something but this would have to be one of the most stupid statements I have heard. Does Harriet think what she is saying as most severe storms would bring rain and lots of it.

We have decided to go on strike from school to show our leaders that, right now, tackling climate change feels more important than our education.

Apparently everything is more important than your education because clearly you haven’t been educated about the facts of the stuff you are throwing a temper tantrum about.

lease don’t say that because we are children we can’t think for ourselves and that we’ve been brainwashed. This is an excuse adults use to ignore kids. Being children may mean that we are less mature, less educated and less articulate, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t think for ourselves and make our own decisions. Please see past our age, and hear what we have to say about the climate crisis.

it’s not an excuse when it’s true, you admit that you are “less educated and less articulate” and yet you’ve been lead to believe that you, in your uneducated state, should have your tantrums listened to on a subject you clearly have no grasp of the facts about. Get educated about that facts rather than throw a wobbly over they stuff you’ve been indoctrinated into believing. Learn to logically articulate the facts rather than emote like a little brat, and then you will have something to say that is worth listening to.

If they want to be taken seriously about their “concern” they should immediately adopt a carbon free life style “No (smart)phone, no lights no motor cars, Not a single luxury, Like Robinson Crusoe, As primative as can be”. They wouldn’t last a week but maybe they’d learn a lesson in the trying.

Use your brain Ivan, and see what the end results of the policies you true believers advocate is. If you leave fossil fuels “in the ground”, it will be a return to the stone age. It’s only cheap, abundant energy (ie fossil fuels) that make modern society possible. without fossil fuels, you won’t have smart phones, or motor cars, and lights only when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. You might want to ditch modern society but thankfully everyone else doesn’t.

Ok and at what cost? There has to be maximum renewables and minimum fossil fuels. A balance has to be struck.

Why, because you say so? Sorry, your declaring it so doesn’t change that fact that “maximum renewables” is a pipe dream. Renewables (wind and solar) are unreliable and uneconomic. Take away the subsidies and no one would be building bird choppers or plastering solar panels on every surface they can find. If you want a modern society you need cheap abundant energy. (barring the discovery of some as yet unknown fuel source) that means fossil fuels. You could cut back on the amount of fossil fuels by building more nuclear plants but your fellow travelers hate and oppose nuclear as much if not more than they hate and oppose fossil fuels. If you want to live in the stone age, then “maximum renewals” is the ticket for you. I prefer modern society thank you very much.

I think thesr children are very well aware of what is happening to the climate and have not been brainwashed – they can think and read for themselves unlike the US sceptic community who still choose to ignore the scientfiic data – like in the recent scientific study on the warming oceans – because it does not fit in with their narrative: https://edition-m.cnn.com/2018/11/01/australia/ocean-warming-report-intl/index.html?r=https%3A%2F%2Fedition.cnn.com%2F

Ummmmm ? The world is now awash in prophets sprouting complete catastrophe drawn from their climatology.

But it has ever been thus. A generation or so ago, it was Marxists, Communists and Trotsyites who foretold the end of the capitalist world and the dawn of a new socialist utopia. And during the 19th century various Christians sects foretold the end of days and the apocalypse…

All these ideologies have gained substantial support from people around the planet..But each of them has fallen by the wayside as their prophecies fell flat.

it is in our stars that some of us are mislead by such nonsense.

Looking at the research data of respected climate scientists is rather different to listening to be bunch of Old Testament prophets spouting their hearsay. One can refute the latter as a bunch of mumbo jumbo whereas one cannot write off proven scientific data quite so easily. But for the US sceptic community they equate the two – which shows them in their true colours

We are fortunate that the climate has gone from the cool LIA to the current slightly warmer period that we live in. Warm periods have always been times of prosperity for life on earth, its the cools times that are the biggest danger to the inhabitants of this little planet of ours.
