The New York Times has devoted an entire edition of its magazine, some 30,000 words, to a terrifying piece about climate change. With 2C warming – an unlikely best-case scenario at this point, scientists were quoted as saying – the planet faces “long-term disaster”.
With 3C warming, we are looking at “the loss of most coastal cities”. The possibility that the Earth might warm by 5C, wrote the author, Nathaniel Rich, had prompted some of the world’s leading scientists to warn of the end of human civilisation.
…
I was having lunch with friends in Brooklyn on Sunday, in a low-lying area that will be under water when all of this comes to pass and, political analysis aside, all we could focus on was: what on earth are we going to do? More specifically, how to ensure the survival of our children, and should it involve buying a compound in some remote part of Canada?
The difficulty is knowing how to recognise the klaxon call when it comes. Is this, the summer of forest fires and record heatwaves, the climate disaster equivalent to Kristallnacht? Or can we safely not think about it for another 10 years?
My advice? Pack up and leave civilization now lady, we’ll see how long you last without lattes and the NYT Sunday edition to read while having lunch with friends.

There are plenty of nice places in Canada, all heated, cooled and maintained by “fossil” fuels. The rest of the places are nice too, as long as you don’t mind sharing with black flies and mosquitoes. 😉

This Kate Spade signaling is just sad.
It’s worth noting that again all the talk is about setting high temp records in one area of a nation while ignoring low temp records being set in summer elsewhere in the country.
High temp records is “climate”. Low temp records is “just weather”.
Sheesh!
‘the planet faces “long-term disaster”.

To which the planet simply doesn’t care. This big ol’ dirt ball will keep flying around the sun NO MATTER WHAT WE DO.
Will a 3c rise for 200 yrs bring us out of this -glacial period , or will it take a 1000 plus years.
And will the inter-glacial be the perfect conditions for life to thrive again ?.
You can get lattes in Canada. Unfortunately, you can even get the NYT Sunday edition.
I sent the following letter to the editor of the Times Sunday Magazine — I doubt that it will be published.
Meanwhile, I’m off to Northern Michigan and Canada as well.
A modest proposal (with apologies to Jonathan Swift)
Sunday’s New York Times magazine was entirely devoted to global warming and our lack of response to it. Doubtless it was read with great approval by the denizens of the upper East and West Sides as they sat in their million dollar apartments, vowing to fight until the last coal miner and oil field roughneck was out of work. This will cost them nothing.
Virtue signaling notwithstanding, it’s time they had some skin of their own in the game. Having practiced medicine in the People’s Republic of New York, I know the love of New York state government for regulations and mandates, and the approval with which they have been met by the above denizens.
So here is a modest proposal for fighting global warming. Mandate that governors be placed on air conditioners so that room temperatures can be no lower than 80 in the summer. Similar governors should be placed on heating, allowing room temperatures no warmer than 60 in the winter. Start in the upper East and West sides of Manhattan, and if met with general approval extend it further.
I think it will be accepted as well they accepted the wind farms proposed off Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket near their summer homes.
She is rather cleverly poking a little sarcasm at NYT doomsday articles…
I think watching the United Nations is the best method of assessing the likelihood of Global Warming.
I wrote a blog about it some time ago.
To me it is the most convincing visual of how seriously the UN, well the UN building actually, takes the myth of AGW.
Here is my blog post. 🙂

Read the article again – carefully. Mrs Brookes has posted a nice satire on the warmist/alarmist predictions of the NYT. She picks out the ludicrous predictions of 2, 3 and 5 degree warming, with the latter predicting “the end of human civilisation”. Perhaps some of those “World’s leading scientists” should try a summer in Khorramshahr – up the Shatt al Arab. In July 2017 the maximum temperature was 50 C, and for the months of June, July and August the temperature did not fall below 35 C. (Unfortunately the series ends in May 2018 – WorldWeatherOnline.com – so cannot provide this year’s summer updates.)
I think she gives the game away when she says that she gets her best ideas on half a gin and tonic. Read her text as /sarc/.
