I get hate mail like this from time to time and I’m pretty certain I know who this one is from to Dr. Roy Spencer as it fits the speech and punctuation pattern of some emails I have received. This one is completely unhinged, but it is worth reviewing just so you can see how a true global warming zealot behaves. It’s the sort of ugly and hateful thinking that gets promoted daily by people like Miriam O’Brien aka “Sou” and the “Hotwhopper” madding crowd whose website exists solely for the purpose of denigration.
I’m with Dr. Spencer and the Washington Post on this. The “climate emergency” promoted by Paul Beckwith is “utter nonsense”, and is the worst “science” of the year

I get some hate email from time to time. Actually, not very much. I guess I’m still cruising under the radar.
In response to my post yesterday criticizing Paul Beckwith’s postabout the allegedly unprecedented crossing of the equator by jet stream winds (a post which, after much criticism, he has since modified), I received a heartfelt email (reproduced below) asking me to, ummm, back off on my criticism.
This email I received yesterday is rather disturbing because I fear it reveals the low caliber of scientific knowledge that exists out there. Too many people are too easily fooled by pseudo-scientific ramblings which can go viral and cross the globe in a matter of hours. This cuts both ways in the global warming debate, as frequent readers of my blog know I have banned people on my side of the argument for pushing too hard on what I consider to be bad science (e.g. the claim that there is no such thing as the “greenhouse effect”).
Even Jason Samenow from the Capital Weather Gang posted agreement with me that there is nothing unusual about winds at the jet stream level moving back and forth across the equator. Jason also quotes other PhD-level atmospheric scientists in that article.
So, I’m just going to leave this here…I was tempted to answer many of the points made below, but I think it will be more enjoyable for regulars here to take a shot at it.
What A way to treat a fellow scientist. Who the f**k cares if its man made or not! Paul is getting the word out there to people…what are you doing? I don’t see you doing anything except having a web site that no one even knows about…I’ve never heard of you. Paul Beckwith puts a lot of hard work and time into trying to raise the issue…You however are a disgrace to global scientists! Or do you not agree this is an emergency? This one video finally caught some attention and you have to f**k it up…Idiot! We NEED for this to be news so maybe, just maybe something will be done! This video has gone viral…let it be! You have made up lies about him and tried to discredit him…why would you do that??? Many people have moved to the southern hemisphere to get away from the radiation…because this was NOT supposed to happen. You need to take down what you said from your web site! What is happening is dangerous and people need to know…too many people already do not believe GW is real…they need to prepare! They need to know! Jesus Dude…What’s wrong with you? And let’s not throw stones about Donations…You have your own Donation button!!!! Fix it Please…

…I really, really , REALLY wanted to come back with a great retort to this silly rant…but, alas, I was simply rolling on the floor while laughing too hard ! Priceless !
The sad thing is that this is not at all isolated. I have written around a dozen articles on climate change for the local paper over the last 15 years. Many of them are titled” “Special to the Courier”. I was a tv meteorologist here for 11 years, so they present me as an expert………not just somebody writing a letter to the editor with crazy opinions.
Since they started a comments section below all articles at the newspaper online site many years ago, I would bet money that there have been over 100 comments as bad as this particular example of hateful, completely clueless ranting.
After one particular article, my wife was seriously almost in tears because of several especially personal attacks(some people remember me from tv and use that to ramp up the personal element).
She wanted to jump in and defend me but I insisted that she never do that.
A person venting or whose intention is to denigrate, may attract plenty “birds of a feather” but with time(sometimes immediately) it is quite obvious which source has integrity and which one does not…………regardless of who is right about the science.
People who are right about the science because they completely understand it, will almost never resort to such tactics in communicating their position.

Nobody completely understands it. Some/many think that they do but I’m not one of them. Sorry for making the previous statement.
To paraphrase the above, only the true believers have stopped asking questions. I come to this site because it has intelligent inquiry and analysis and people who have personal and scientific credibility. I care much more about the corruption of science than I do about this minor warming issue.
Are we sure this isn’t satire sent to Dr. Spencer as his own personal piece of performance art? It is almost too perfectly stupid and cynical to be real.

Yes, I too wondered if it was satire. It just seems too outrageous to be genuine.

Based on that sentence alone, the guy (or gal) is a class A moron, in addition to being emotionally unstable. So, never mind what “word” Beckwitless is getting out there, it’s the getting it “out there” that’s important. Then the nitwit intones that all AW is doing is “having a website that no one even knows about”, followed by the logic-free statement “I’ve never heard of you”. Clearly, it has no clue about WUWT – either what it does, or its reach, and thus, having itself never heard of either AW or WUWT (almost certainly a bald-faced lie), then it must be irrelevant. But if it’s so irrelevant, then why does it feel the need to go on a rant?
To be fair, the ranter wasn’t talking about WUWT but Dr. Spenser and his site.
Of course, if he’s never heard of Dr. Spenser or http://www.drroyspencer.com/ then why the vitriol?
“Why the vitriol?” My interpretation is that this poster has never read anything from an actual scientific skeptic, and probably is unaware that such creatures actually do exist. He is vaguely aware that “deniers” are out there, but believes them to be solely part of the apathetic public or fossil fuel funded.
Because Roy Spencer is “Dr. Spencer” he must be a scientist and therefore is of course a global warming alarmist. That being so, it is obviously infuriating for Spencer to not to understand the “damage” his lack of enthusiasm creates.
Perhaps the e-mailer is suffering from the “97% consensus” virus? I think the CDC said it effects the brain.
But I could be wrong.

Since this guy seems to be quite a fan of Beckwith, someone should ask him if he believes that the Arctic ice did melt away in 2013. (However, from my observations I suspect that that sort of thing doesn’t even register with someone like this.)
The warmists like their myths. And any time someone puts out another myth-making video, they spread it around the world as fast as possible. They want other people to believe the myths that support the global warming narrative. Naturally, that means they hate people that try correct their myths and myth-making videos with factual information.

I worked in a large government lab. Most people had, at least, a bachelor’s degree. Most of my coworkers were liberal Democrats (ugh). There was a collegiate atmosphere in the lab. We had few supervisors, but people just took charge of things — and if you needed help, someone would always come to the rescue, and if you didn’t know how to do something, someone else would, or have a good idea anyway. One of the things that set the people in the lab apart from the general population was — no one cussed. Think that’s one way to differentiate between scientists and others. Heated arguments (which were few) involved many large words, that would send the average folk scrambling for the nearest dictionary.

This person has clearly blown a gasket and needs help.
Please go down to NAPA auto parts, get a roll of gasket material, and send it him so he can fix his problem.
I would send him a gasket, but he seems distorted and out-of-spec and the gasket will probably have to be cut to fit.
Not sure that there is a head to put on top of the gasket when you place it on the block. Anyway, I think he broke is timing belt.
Well, you can get human heads online – but they aren’t very functional.
Of course, what he has right now isn’t very functional either so people might not notice.

I don’t think the timing belt is broken. This person is clearly not running on all cylinders, something a blown gasket could easily explain. A broken timing belt would likely cause serious damage to the head, valves and pistons causing the crank to seize up.

It’s the Deputy Undersecretary, for the Assistant Bully to the Grand Poobah Bully, popping off. Yeah, yeah, yeah your dad will beat up my dad, I know, simmer down short shanks. I enjoy how the dim bulb thinks that “Paul” is a demigod, and how his bloomers get twisted when someone who has a website “that no one even knows about” says something slightly contra the CAGW canon. This is always a bad idea.

Hey, my problem is critical thinking, and a functional inability to form beliefs, and the associated attachments. Yours? Right, just the opposite. Dude, I’ll throw you a bone GW is real, but CAGW is not real, the whole running around hair on fire, hands over head screaming like the Wet Bandits in Home Alone is “right out” to mix, and steal a movie metaphors.

Young man, you have been prepared and protected from the depredations of nature all of your life. It might be interesting for you to understand the science and engineering behind everything you now take for granted. Just look at everything in a hardware store or a grocery store. Ask yourself “How did this all get here?” From the ore in the ground to the item on the shelf–it is a wonderful story.

The way I see it, all of our businesses are likely under tremendous pressure to adopt the new rules or face bad press. Some of the companies have probably withstood the unreasonable demands for worthless product changes, and the higher prices.
But at least WUWT and others were able to catch what was being done to Exxon.
