Adventures in journalism: from llama fish to carbon neutral bras

Louise Gray, who wrote this amazing piece of journalism in the Telegraph the other day…

Fish carried up a mountain on backs of llamas to escape global warming

…has boobed given us yet another story worthy of discussion here.

The Carbon Trust Footprinting Certification Company has calculated the carbon used in making the bra and will monitor the project to ensure emissions are cut.

The wonderbra, it isn’t, but somehow, from a guy’s perspective, seeing the models below, I don’t think any guy is going to give a hoot about the carbon neutrality of undies.

Gotta wonder though if this:

…an ‘eco factory’ in Sri Lanka where energy has been reduced a third through measures like making sure all lighting is from the sun or low energy light bulbs.

Isn’t just code for “sweatshop with no lights”.  At the M&S website for the bra, there’s no mention or photos of the factory that I could find, though there are mentions of how buying one of these will supposedly benefit the purple-faced langur and the Ceylon  rose butterfly.

I guess they haven’t gotten the Wal-Mart memo yet:

GORE STORE NO MORE | Daily Telegraph Tim Blair Blog

After suffering seven straight quarters of losses, today the merchandise giant Wal-Mart will announce that it is “going back to basics,” ending its era of high-end organic foods, going “green,” and the remainder of its appeal to the upscale market. Next month the company will launch an “It’s Back” campaign to woo the millions of customers who have fled the store.

Maybe, this is just nothing more than an extension of this old campaign:

Punctuation is a bear! The line should read:
If it is cotton, they poluted by killing the plants that absorb CO2, cotton!

Actually, all the women giving up their bras to go “carbon neutral” would likely cause males worldwide to breath harder, contributing MORE CO2 to the atmosphere…..

Too true Alan, but for the gals there has been awareness of other products, complete with compostable envelope via post, for a few years now. http://www.menswearreview.com/category/pact-review/
That desert island is looking better by the day!
Not sure if that product is via house martins, swallow or the plumber though.

Apologies
Of course it was the ‘Scarlet Pumpernickel’ in Tips and Posts that precipitated this post.

Just to be safe, I think we should go without bras entirely. It’s not worth risking the entire globe. Also, shirts should be banned. imo

I’d rather support carbon recycling. As in the innovative development of spray-on clothing, which uses short cotton fibers currently but could possibly use other types. Not only could they perhaps utilize too-short fibers that would be considered waste for normal thread and textile manufacture, but possibly this could be a great way to recycle dryer lint.

The inventor says it will revolutionise fashion… but would YOU dare to wear spray-on clothes?

In the interest of promoting journalistic freedom over censorship, here are two photos that “disappeared” from the article as originally posted but are still on the Mail’s server:

Yes, those are “flesh” colored pasties.

The white lace strapless pushup bra is by the M&S company. The low carbon future is definately S&M. What do those Brits have against themselves?!

Awright Mike Bromley, Alpaca hair might be softer. 😉 John Silver trumped you with his no-bra scheme.
I wonder if Barry Penner is buying his wife some of that lingerie. When he was Environment Minister of B.C. in Canada he decided to have a candlelight dinner with her, all the better to have an energy-free experience for Earth Hour. Hit the news because their poor cat caught its fur on fire. Cat survived, I doubt its ignoramus owners would if on their own in the bush.

As for a solar workplace, lessee:
– grow food (solar synthesis)
– eat food (conversion)
– pedal generator
– laugh (what else ya gonna do, except dream of a next life if you are a poor Indian)

The so called ‘dimly lit sweatshop’ seems to be a darn good factory of its own right.
