Cleaned 11/11/09

After months of watching threads get all sorts of off-topic comments because people see something they want to bring to my attention, I’ve decided to add a way to send messages and news tips that won’t clutter other threads.

Use this page to comment on anything that doesn’t fit in a thread appropriately. This would include tips for story ideas, questions, and requests for personal communications.

The comments posted here will be regularly checked, and then deleted when they have been read unless there is some reason to keep them around.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a discussion forum, if you have something to discuss or debate do it on the relevant thread. Arguments that break out here will be deleted as well as complaints about deletions.

CARBON TRADING: DOES IT REALLY REDUCE EMISSIONS?
…Carbon trading could trigger a financial collapse like the sub-prime loans crisis, according to a new report from the green group Friends of the Earth (FoE).
…The carbon trade allows dirty industries in rich countries to offset emissions targets by paying for clean development projects in poor countries. London is a major centre for the trade, which could reach trillions of dollars in the next few decades.

But FoE says most trades are done not by polluting industries, but by speculative traders packaging carbon credits into complex financial products similar to those which triggered the sub-prime mortgage crash. It warns that this could lead to a future crisis of sub-prime carbon. …

HMMM – I wonder if that might give them an incentive to bellyache about supposed sea level changes and the West’s duty to pay?

‘Rising inflation is posing a threat to South Asia, with the situation most worrying in the Maldives where a foreign currency black market has emerged, a senior World Bank economist has warned. Noting that the median inflation rate in South Asia was more than twice that of Latin America and the Caribbean, economist Eliana Cardoso asked whether policymakers in the region should be concerned “and wonder whether they are doing something wrong.” In the third quarter of 2009, inflation in South Asia, which aside from the Maldives comprises India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bhutan, hit an average 10.9 percent, the World Bank said. It compares with just 2.9 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean. “From the price stability perspective the most worrying situation is that of the Maldives,” Cardoso, the bank’s chief economist for the South Asian region, wrote on the “World Bank’s End Poverty in South Asia” blog. She said that the budget deficit in Maldives, the region’s most exotic tourist des tination, was projected to reach 33 percent by the end of the year and “a black market for foreign currency has emerged.” Cardoso noted that the Maldives government had promised fiscal adjustment. President Mohamed Nasheed has said that his atoll nation was facing its worst economic crisis ever because of a sharp fall in tourist numbers and chronic government overspending.’

I was surprised by the Spainish claim of 50%+ energy supplied from wind last week. Then I read this article in the Register. Never heard of that paper before. It goes a bit wild near the end of the article but it did help me to understand how 50% was possible and why it does not indicate that wind is better than I had thought. The spiking effect is explained well and the need for quick response power generation. Although it discusses that in terms of pumped storage or HEP from damns I suppose gas stations could respond quickly as well. Probably not as quickly as needed though, and even gas is not liked by environmentalists.

I don’t know if anyone else has seen this about a Church in Berkshire, UK intending to be carbon neutral, but apart from reinforcing the idea that Climate Change belief is now a religion, it makes me furious to think that this house of god see’s no problem in raising £900,000 to enabling them to achieve this ! I can think of a number of charities and good causes that this sum of money would have real and welcome benefits to them.

if I look carefully at your World Climate Widget, it looks to me that since about 2001 we have a slight decline in global warming, or shall we say: global cooling has started.
This seems to coincide with the increase in earth’s albedo, http://wattsupwiththat.com/2007/10/17/earths-albedo-tells-a-interesting-story/
although I think this graph may need some updating (look Palle et al 2008)
As I suspected, I found that at the same time ozone has begun increasing.
http://atmoz.org/blog/2007/09/05/ozone-hole-update/
I also note that CO2 is increasing (it seems trhere is no doubt about that). CO2 also reflects sunlight. We also note that water vapor is increasing, due to human activities, mostly shallow water (dams for irrigation). So all in all, I think the increase in earth’s albedo will hold, and it wipes out the effect normally attributed greenhouse gases!

(PhysOrg.com) — The scalding-hot sea that supposedly covered the early Earth may in fact never have existed, according to a new study by Stanford University researchers who analyzed isotope ratios in 3.4 billion-year-old ocean floor rocks. Their findings suggest that the early ocean was much more temperate and that, as a result, life likely diversified and spread across the globe much sooner in Earth’s history than has been generally theorized.

Might this change notions about the early climate on Earth that would impact any climate models in use today? If not then the climate models are inaccurate.

What’s Happening in the Heliosphere
The influence of the Sun is felt well beyond the orbits of the planets. The solar wind is a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun that carves a bubble in interstellar space known as the heliosphere and shrouds the entire solar system. The edge of the heliosphere, the region where the solar wind interacts with interstellar space, is largely unexplored. Voyager 1 and 2 crossed this boundary in 2004 and 2007, respectively, providing detailed but only localized information. In this issue (see the cover), McComas et al. (p. 959, published online 15 October), Fuselier et al. (p. 962, published online 15 October), Funsten et al. (p. 964, published online 15 October), and Möbius et al. (p. 969, published online 15 October) present data taken by NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). Since early 2009, IBEX has been building all-sky maps of the emissions of energetic neutral atoms produced at the boundary between the heliosphere and the interstellar medium. These maps have unexpectedly revealed a narrow band of emission that bisects the two Voyager locations at energies ranging from 0.2 to 6 kiloelectron volts. Emissions from the band are two- to threefold brighter than outside the band, in contrast to current models that predict much smaller variations across the sky. By comparing the IBEX observations with models of the heliosphere, Schwadron et al. (p. 966, published online 15 October) show that to date no model fully explains the observations. The model they have developed suggests that the interstellar magnetic field plays a stronger role than previously thought. In addition to the all-sky maps, IBEX measured the signatures of H, He, and O flowing into the heliosphere from the interstellar medium. In a related report, Krimigis et al. (p. 971, published online 15 October) present an all-sky image of energetic neutral atoms with energies ranging between 6 and 13 kiloelectron volts obtained with the Ion and Neutral Camera onboard the Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn. It shows that parts of the structure observed by IBEX extend to high energies. These data indicate that the shape of the heliosphere is not consistent with that of a comet aligned in the direction of the Sun’s travel through the galaxy as was previously thought.

THE World Council of Churches has called on churches around the world to ring their bells 350 times during the Copenhagen climate change summit on December 13 as a call to action on global warming.

The leading council of Christian and Orthodox churches also invited places of worship for other faiths to join a symbolic “chain of chimes and prayers” stretching around the world from the international date line in the South Pacific.

“On that Sunday, midway through the UN summit, the WCC invites churches around the world to use their bells, drums, gongs or whatever their tradition offers to call people to prayer and action in the face of climate change,” the council said in a statement.

“By sounding their bells or other instruments 350 times, participating churches will symbolize the 350 parts per million that mark the safe upper limit for CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere according to many scientists,” it added.

The chimes are meant to start at 3pm local time in each location.

The WCC brings together 348 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches representing about 560 million Christians in 110 countries.
The UN summit in the Danish capital on December 7 to 18 is meant to produce a new global treaty to broaden cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change, but the negotiations are still driven by disagreements.

Chinese scientists artificially induced the second major snowstorm to wreak havoc in Beijing this season, state media said, reigniting debate over the practice of tinkering with Mother Nature.

After the earliest snow to hit the capital in 22 years fell on November 1, the capital was again shrouded in white Tuesday with more snow expected in the coming three days, the National Meteorological Centre said.

The China Daily, citing an unnamed official, said the Beijing Weather Modification Office had artificially induced both storms by seeding clouds with chemicals, a practice that can increase precipitation by up to 20 percent….

Greenland ice loss ‘accelerating’

Professor Barry cautioned that the Grace mission, which has produced valuable data about Antarctica as well as Greenland, has only a further two years to run, and that no replacement is currently scheduled.

More alarmist findings from a cargo cult scientist.

Of the same report from another source he makes this bleedingly obvious observation.

At the same time that surface melting started to increase around 1996, snowfall on the ice sheet also increased at approximately the same rate, masking surface mass losses for nearly a decade. Moreover, a significant part of the additional meltwater refroze in the cold snowpack that covers the ice sheet. Without these moderating effects, post-1996 Greenland mass loss would have been double the amount of mass loss observed now.

So if it hadn’t kept snowing, melting and refreezing there would have been more ice lost. It’s lucky for us Greenland has been doing that for the last 11 thousand years.

Falsi cation Of
The Atmospheric CO2 Greenhouse E ects
Within The Frame Of Physics

Short form, the “greenhouse effect” we here so much about is false since that is not actually how a greenhouse works. The theory is that sunlight enters the greenhouse, is converted to long wave radiation, which cannot get back out through the glass and thus is trapped inside, heating the greenhouse. This was tested by making a greenouse of rock salt which is transperent to infra red radiation. The theory would then be that sunlight enters through the rock salt glass, is converted to long wave radiation, and then exits right back out through the rock salt glass which is transperent to long wave radiation, which should result in a cold greenhouse.
The actual effect, a hot greenhouse, in fact, slightly hotter than the regular glass greenhouse. Reason, greenhouses don’t heat up due to the trapping of long wave radiation by the glass, thye heat up due to the sun heating the ground and objects inside the greenhouse, which then warms the air by contact, the sole reason the air gets warmer is that the glass keeps this air warmed by contact with the heated ground from being blown away by the wind.
In short, there is absolutly NO “greenhouse effect” in existance which has any comparison to our atmosephere.

Global warming is not our fault, say most voters in Times poll

Less than half the population believes that human activity is to blame for global warming, according to an exclusive poll for The Times.

Only 41 per cent accept as an established scientific fact that global warming is taking place and is largely man-made. Almost a third (32 per cent) believe that the link is not yet proved; 8 per cent say that it is environmentalist propaganda to blame man and 15 per cent say that the world is not warming.

Aligner,

I just noticed this chart, which shows that current temps are the same as they were in 1901: click.

“Environmentalist propaganda” is the correct answer; it just depends on your starting point. [Actually, there is completely normal and natural warming. But it's so small that it's nothing to get alarmed about.]

Would be interesting to know just how much of the damages from heavy snow were related to the cloud seeding… and the final paragraph makes one wonder if they were playing with cloud seeding last year too perhaps.

Early snow storms in China kill 40, damage more than 9,000 buildings; $659 million in damage

Associated Press
11/14/09 2:25 AM EST

BEIJING — Unusually early snow storms in north-central China have claimed 40 lives, caused thousands of buildings to collapse and destroyed almost 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) of winter crops, the Civil Affairs Ministry said Friday.

Nineteen of the deaths resulted from traffic accidents related to the storms that began Nov. 9, the ministry said in a statement on its Web site.

The snowfall is the heaviest in the northern and central provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shandong and Henan since record keeping began after the establishment of the Communist state in 1949, the ministry said without giving detailed figures. It estimated economic losses from the storm at 4.5 billion yuan (US$659 million).

((SNIP – cut middle out to minimize length & for copyright))

Freak snow and ice storms last year hit parts of eastern and southern China unaccustomed to such weather. Those storms paralyzed key transport systems just as millions of migrant workers were heading home for the Lunar New Year holiday, leading to more than 80 deaths and billions of dollars in damage.

I have just been reading this paper by David W. J. Thompson, John J. Kennedy, John M. Wallace & Phil D. Jones http://www.atmos.colostate.edu/ao/ThompsonPapers/Thompson_etal_Nature2008.pdf in which it states

Hence, the sudden drop in SSTs in late 1945 is consistent with the
rapid but uncorrected change from engine room intake measure-
ments (US ships) to uninsulated bucket measurements (UK ships)
at the end of the Second World War. As the drop derives from the
composition of the ICOADS data set, it is present in all records of
twentieth-century climate variability that include SST data.
The Met Office Hadley Centre is currently assessing the adjust-
ments required to compensate for the step in 1945 and subsequent
changes in the SST observing network.

The point here is that if this step is removed we have an almost continuous and monatomic increase in global temperatures from 1900 and given that the amount of CO2 emitted by fossil fuel burning was relatively low before 1950 http://www.wri.org/chart/global-emissions-co2-from-fossil-fuels-1900-2004 I have to ask the question whether a significant driver for the increase in atmospheric CO2 is temperature with an overlay from the effects of fossil fuel burning etc. in the latter half of the 20th century.

Juraj V.

Hi Oldjim, the result should be like this:
http://blog.sme.sk/blog/560/195013/hadsstssn.jpg
My theory is, that the sudden drop was introduced intentionally, first to erase still warm period of fifties and second, to get the global temperatures rising till 1945, then sudden step down and rising still faster from 1945 to 200X.
This wrong SST record contaminated all global datasets, PDO index and so on. See that ground stations show cyclical ups and downs during the 20th century with no such step whatsoever.

As regards the Times of London poll, link above by Neil Jones [no relation] the news actually appears on the front page of the Saturday edition and is followed up by a piece of polemic in the first leader, that is the first and most mportant and political editorial. I shall of course write a letter.

As to large SUVs known here as Chelsea tractors it is I suspect less to do with envy and more to do with the way they block up our rather narrow streets. Nobody minds Land Rovers in the countryside for that is where they belong: but not these monsters used as commuter vehicles taking up valuable road space in our cities: it is not even as if they ever go to the country. Hawaii’s White Beaches Washing Away

Another story that has little to do with AGW, but they just couldn’t resist I suppose. They tell us first:

“Geologists say more than 70 percent of Kauai’s beaches are eroding while Oahu has lost a quarter of its sandy shoreline. They warn the problem is only likely to get significantly worse in coming decades as global warming causes sea levels to rise more rapidly.”

Then it goes on to the real, current reasons for the erosion:

“Chip Fletcher, a University of Hawaii geology professor, says scientists in Hawaii haven’t yet observed an accelerated rate of sea level rise due to global warming.
Instead, the erosion the islands are experiencing now is caused by several factors including a steady historical climb in sea levels that likely dates back to the 19th century.
Other causes include storms and human actions like the construction of seawalls, jetties, and the dredging of stream mouths. Each of these human actions disrupts the natural flow of sand.”

But then, lest we forget about:

“But a more rapid rise in sea levels, caused by global warming, is expected to contribute to erosion in Hawaii within decades. In 100 years, sea levels are likely to be at least 1 meter, or 3.3 feet, higher than they are now, pushing the ocean inland along coastal areas.”

This is a story from the Copenhagen conference’s web site. That site is worth watching, as it seeks to rationalize the conference.

Even if the USA – short of national climate change legislation – cannot commit to a legally binding global deal at the UN conference in Copenhagen next month, it may still engage in a limited deal. The purpose of this would be to ensure the world of the Obama administration’s good intentions.

“An interim, operational deal is not meant to be seen as a substitute for a real agreement. It’s meant to be seen as substantive building blocks to a full, legal agreement, and perhaps the best chance of getting such an agreement.” Todd Stern, US special envoy on climate change, says according to The Washington Post.

The American signals are in line with a suggestion last month by Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, host of the upcoming UN conference, for the conference in Copenhagen to result in a “political agreement” later to be replaced by a legally binding one.

Former vice president and Nobel peace prize winner Al Gore finds that it is easy to understand why such a solution would appeal to the USA.

“The disappointment in the world community that would accompany a failure of Copenhagen, if it were laid at the doorstep of the United States, would be significant. I’m optimistic that they will handle Copenhagen well. What’s important is that what emerges from Copenhagen is perceived as an important step forward,” Al Gore says according to The Washington Post.

Greetings to everyone, this is my very first post here but i am a fan of this blog nearly a year now. I am a teenager from North Greece. The reason i decided to write is because i wanted to congratulate everyone for helping this blog become so informative and useful independent from Main Stream Media’s rubbish reports regarding climate science. Special thanks towards Anthony Watts and the contributors of this blog for doing such a special job. You really do brilliant work. You people really helped me on thinking smarter about everything that refers to the word “climate”. This is my hobby my life and my dream. This will be my professional occupation in near future.

Today, I formed a group in facebook with the title : Climate Change Distorted by Media. I want to show to other people that climate science is not the Media junk they watch every day on the news. I may not be a meteorologist or a climatologist ( for now!) but at least i can persuade them by presenting them articles from other experienced people by providing links. Your blog is one of the best on internet talking about real climate science. I would really appreciate if i could have your permission to publish links with your articles. (presenting them as yours of course)

Anthony, Since snow reflects sunlight, what better way to cool the earth than to seed clouds and make extra snow fall?

Not to mention stimulus effect on sales of carrot sticks and charcoal!

http://features.csmonitor.com/globalnews/2009/11/02/beijing-gets-early-snow-thank-cloud-seeding/

Actually I am serious. Would a massive seeding operation that extends the volume and duration of snow coverage have any meaningful impact on global temperatures? Any studies?

15 11 2009
imapopulist

From Wikipdia:

“The classic example of albedo effect is the snow-temperature feedback. If a snow-covered area warms and the snow melts, the albedo decreases, more sunlight is absorbed, and the temperature tends to increase. The converse is true: if snow forms, a cooling cycle happens.”

15 11 2009
imapopulist

From Wikipdia:

Snow

Snow albedos can be as high as 90%; this, however, is for the ideal example: fresh deep snow over a featureless landscape. Over Antarctica they average a little more than 80%. If a marginally snow-covered area warms, snow tends to melt, lowering the albedo, and hence leading to more snowmelt (the ice-albedo positive feedback).

15 11 2009
imapopulist

Would result in two albedo’s – cloud formation and snow surface area.

How cloud seeding works
A ground-based Silver Iodide generator

The most common chemicals used for cloud seeding include silver iodide and dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide). The expansion of liquid propane into a gas has also been used and can produce ice crystals at warmer temperatures than silver iodide. The use of hygroscopic materials, such as salt, is increasing in popularity[citation needed] because of some promising research results[citation needed].

Seeding of clouds requires that they contain supercooled liquid water—that is, liquid water colder than zero degrees Celsius. Introduction of a substance such as silver iodide, which has a crystalline structure similar to that of ice, will induce freezing nucleation. Dry ice or propane expansion cools the air to such an extent that ice crystals can nucleate spontaneously from the vapor phase. Unlike seeding with silver iodide, this spontaneous nucleation does not require any existing droplets or particles because it produces extremely high vapor supersaturations near the seeding substance. However, the existing droplets are needed for the ice crystals to grow into large enough particles to precipitate out.

In mid-latitude clouds, the usual seeding strategy has been predicated upon the fact that the equilibrium vapor pressure is lower over ice than over water. When ice particles form in supercooled clouds, this fact allows the ice particles to grow at the expense of liquid droplets. If there is sufficient growth, the particles become heavy enough to fall as snow (or, if melting occurs, rain) from clouds that otherwise would produce no precipitation. This process is known as “static” seeding.

Seeding of warm-season or tropical cumulonimbus (convective) clouds seeks to exploit the latent heat released by freezing. This strategy of “dynamic” seeding assumes that the additional latent heat adds buoyancy, strengthens updrafts, ensures more low-level convergence, and ultimately causes rapid growth of properly selected clouds.

Anthony,

When the scientific community is vulnerable to accepting that global warming is not man made or not entirely so, it will more than likely need some ability to save face.

Thus there may come a time when a mechanism to “manage” temperatures becomes acceptable as a way of not having to admit to themselves that they were wrong in the first place.

Weather alteration to change long term climate trends could be that mechanism.

Flanders Today: Van Rompuy shows his hand at Bilderberg Group dinner

Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy has to date been careful when it comes to stating overly explicit visions with regard to the European presidency. His low-key profile is, after all, his biggest asset when it comes to scooping the post. But Thursday night behind the closed doors of a Bilderberg Group gathering at the Castle of the Valley of the Duchess, he finally showed his hand, says De Tijd newspaper. The Bilderberg Group is a circle of elite figures from the international political, finance and corporate worlds that hold annual invitation-only meetings.

Van Rompuy told the elite club that the European government leaders are increasingly becoming proponents of Europe tapping off green income, so that the contributions of member states to the EU can be decreased. The economic revival will not suffice, said Van Rompuy, when it comes to eliminating the massive budgetary deficits in numerous member states. His assertion did not go unchallenged, and an Italian guest even put some tricky questions to him. De Tijd says that his pronouncement on a European green tax is already doing the rounds in the European capitals. It might rapidly become a weapon with which to attack his candidacy, the newspaper suggests.

Van Rompuy accepted the invitation of Etienne Davignon to address the gathering because the discretion of the Bilderberg Group has attained legendary status, and what is said at its meetings has never leaked out. Van Rompuy was also asked what role the first president of Europe should play. He responded that Europe needs a guiding president rather than a leading one.

Mini ice age took hold of Europe in months
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427344.800-mini-ice-age-took-hold-of-europe-in-months.html

JUST months – that’s how long it took for Europe to be engulfed by an ice age. The scenario, which comes straight out of Hollywood blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow, was revealed by the most precise record of the climate from palaeohistory ever generated.

Around 12,800 years ago the northern hemisphere was hit by the Younger Dryas mini ice age, or “Big Freeze”. It was triggered by the slowdown of the Gulf Stream, led to the decline of the Clovis culture in North America, and lasted around 1300 years.

Until now, it was thought that the mini ice age took a decade or so to take hold, on the evidence provided by Greenland ice cores. Not so, say William Patterson of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, and his colleagues.

16 11 2009

Triggered by slowdown of gulf stream, or by impact event?

From: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/01/090101172136.htm

Last year a 26-member team from 16 institutions proposed that a cosmic impact event, possibly by multiple airbursts of comets, set off a 1,300-year-long cold spell known as the Younger Dryas, fragmented the prehistoric Clovis culture and led to the extinction of a large range of animals, including mammoths, across North America. The team’s paper was published in the Oct. 9, 2007, issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Now, reporting in the Jan. 2 issue of the journal Science, a team led by the University of Oregon’s Douglas J. Kennett, a member of the original research team, report finding billions of nanometer-sized diamonds concentrated in sediments — weighing from about 10 to 2,700 parts per billion — in the six locations during digs funded by the National Science Foundation.

MORE than 100 penguin-loving tourists including dozens from Britain are trapped by ice off Antarctica aboard a Russian ice-breaker cruise ship, officials and the tour operator said today.

The Kapitan Khlebnikov is in a bay near Snow Hill island, located off the northeastern end of the Antarctic Peninsula, and cannot leave as the bay is sealed off with ice, the Russian transportation ministry said.

“The wind has currently slowed down in the area and the massing of the ice has ended.

Everything is calm aboard the ice-breaker, nothing is threatening the passengers and crew,” the ministry said in a statement.

Anthony – Thanks for the recent blog about peer reviewed studies that are in conflict with the AGW argument. I wonder how many of the studies or articles that support AGW, such as this one, are simply using the AGW theory as conjecture to make another “science argument”? I see very little research or articles that support AGW based soley on the mechanics of how CO2 is causing warming.

“Dutch first in Europe to adopt green tax for cars”

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/dutch-first-in-europe-to-adopt-green-tax-for-cars-1821268.html

“The Dutch government is to become the first country in Europe to introduce a green tax to replace annual road tax on cars.

Drivers will have to pay per kilometer driven in a bid to end chronic traffic jams and cut carbon emissions. The system, which will use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to monitor cars, could be used as a test case for other countries weighing options for easing crowded roads. Singapore has a similar scheme for charging according to the amount of travel. “

I think the IPCC’s assumption of a 3 C rise in temperature for doubled CO2 should be tested regularly and concisely.

I propose an IPCC Watch, which can be done both monthly and annually against surface temperature. For October, the monthly Watch is +0.40 C, meaning that the IPCC forecast temperature exceeds the surface temperature by this amount, using a base period from March 1958 to February 1959.

The annual Watch for 2008 is +0.58 C (a record high), using 1880 as the base year.

Details are at http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B39QlQ1NSWREZWY4NmYzZDMtYzliZC00YjBhLWI1YmYtYWIxYjI2Y2RlNGNm&hl=en, and I would welcome any comment.

Places that have sand will have beaches (Florida). Places that don’t have sand (Maine?) don’t have beaches. Almost all problems with beaches are caused by humans, but it’s not global warming. It’s jetties, seawalls, pumping sand, etc. If the ocean rises a meter during the next 50 years, there will still be beaches in Florida. Why this article even mentions global warming must be attributed to politics and not a real issue.

Just The Facts

The TimesOnline has produced a series of reasonably objective editorials and articles exploring skeptic arguments and positions. Today we have: “It was the Sun wot done it. Or was it?”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article6919256.ece
A couple days ago was: “Global warming is not our fault, say most voters in Times poll”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6916648.ece
Earlier this month was: “Experts say that fears surrounding climate change are overblown”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/science/article6905082.ece

This is a huge improvement for the TimesOnline, as 8 months ago the tune was more like this: “Each one of us dumps a tonne of carbon dioxide into the oceans every year, turning them into acidified soups — and threatening to destroy most of what lives in them”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article5853261.ece

Cheers to the TimesOnline for gaining some respect for the facts, or at least realizing that presenting the skeptic’s side can significantly increase their readership.

As one of the most influential green blogs, we wanted to let you know that the Media & Policy Center Foundation is receiving a grant from Siemens to produce a one-hour broadcast, education, and community outreach project, Growing Greener Schools. The program will be distributed to PBS stations nationwide for broadcast during Earth Day week, 2010, and will not only inform, but provide communities with the resources they need to build green schools and turn older schools green.

We need your support in raising awareness of this new green living program and driving real community change through the Watts Up With That? blog. For more information, see the below news release. We’ll keep you updated on their progress, but if you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Sydney Weisman of WHPR at 323-730-0233 or sydney@whpr.com.

SIEMENS SUPPORTS GROWING GREENER SCHOOLS PROJECT TO BOOST ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
MEDIA & POLICY CENTER FOUNDATION PBS PROGRAM WILL GUIDE
PARENTS, STUDENTS & COMMUNITIES TO SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS

SANTA MONICA, CA, NOVEMBER 16, 2009 – Siemens, a global leader in green technologies and sustainable infrastructure, has agreed to fund a one-hour broadcast, education, and community outreach project, Growing Greener Schools, to be produced by the Media & Policy Center Foundation and distributed to PBS stations nationwide for broadcast during Earth Day week, 2010.
The Media & Policy Center is dedicated to creating television programs that provide community leaders with the knowledge, tools and support to undertake locally-based projects designed to create greener, more sustainable communities.
“Our programs are designed to move beyond passive viewing to create the inspiration and the support for communities to act. Growing Greener Schools will enable the next generation of environmental stewards to learn about sustainability and to translate what they learn into direct action that will make their own school buildings greener,” said Harry Wiland, co-founder of the Center. “We are delighted that Siemens has joined us as a partner and collaborator to help lead 55 million young students to a more sustainable curriculum in a more sustainable building environment,” added partner and co-founder, Dale Bell. “While we grow greener schools, we nurture greener students.”
Growing Greener Schools is being developed by the Media & Policy Center at the request of PBS Distribution, which provides programming to thought-leaders across the nation. The program will focus on two critical aspects of creating green schools, the structural elements of building or retrofitting and maintaining green schools, and the ways and means of integrating sustainability into school curricula and community-based service projects.
“We are delighted to sponsor a program like Growing Greener Schools because it is a natural fit for Siemens in so many ways,” said Jim Whaley, Vice President, Marketing & Communications for the Siemens Corporation and President of the Siemens Foundation. “It complements our successful educational initiative with The Discovery Foundation on the We Can Change The World Challenge, where we encourage K-12 pupils to devise environmental solutions for their communities. And it’s aligned with our ongoing outreach into America’s cities and towns through the annual Sustainable Community Awards, which rewards ‘green thinking’ at the municipal level.”
According to Bell and Wiland, partners in the Media & Policy Center, the program will provide practical, real-world guidance using existing effective programs. “Growing Greener Schools will take viewers to more than two dozen schools across the nation: for example, two suburban schools in Maryland, one which has been a successful green school for years and one which is planning to go green within two years. We’ll also look at the planning necessary to build a green school with a visit to the Denver Colorado Green School Planning Committee. Together, these examples will provide students, parents and community leaders with the basic information they need to grow their own green schools.”
The program will also examine the roles in which architects, engineers, sustainability experts and local elected officials can play in building green schools and turning older schools green.
“Environmental awareness and sustainability are core to Siemens’ overall business philosophy and an integral part of what we do for our customers in the U.S. and globally. We strongly support early education on the importance of what it means to act and live in a sustainable way. After all, they will be the leaders of tomorrow. There is no better way to reinforce a ‘green curriculum’ than making the schools themselves a showcase for sustainability,” said Alison Taylor, Chief Sustainability Officer Americas, Siemens AG.
The Media & Policy Center has produced a variety of programs using its unique “media model” comprised of many integrated components, including books. Its programs include a Going To Green Academic Curriculum, a 9-hour DVD presentation that supports a 20-unit set of lessons, and Edens Lost & Found, a multi-part series that examines the creation of green and sustainable spaces in urban settings. These and other series are developed with the goal of creating community-based campaigns that the Center facilitates and supports once the programs have aired. The Center has generated town hall meetings, community-based action plans and community organization driven projects from coast to coast.

About The Media & Policy Center Foundation

The Media & Policy Center Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) multi-media strategy and production company, located in Santa Monica, CA. Now celebrating ten years, The Media & Policy Center’s two co-founders hold numerous awards for prior independent productions, including one Academy Award, five Emmys, one Peabody, two Christophers, and two Cine Golden Eagles. The Media & Policy Center’s mission is to inspire social change by enabling the sharing of personal and community stories that may never otherwise be documented, and to help citizens in every community understand and address the issues that confront them. They are community organizers on a national scale who use a suite of media components to convey their messages, transforming PBS viewers into doers. Some more bad news for Copenhagen :

President Barack Obama and other world leaders agreed today that next month’s much-anticipated climate change summit will be merely a way station….”There was an assessment by the leaders that it is unrealistic to expect a full internationally, legally binding agreement could be negotiated…” ….A fully binding legal agreement would be left to a second meeting next year in Mexico City… the Danish proposal would call for Copenhagen to produce “operational impact,”…A major bill dealing with energy and climate in the U.S., a domestic priority of Obama’s, is bogged down in the U.S. Senate with scant hope it would be completed by next month, giving the American president little to show in Copenhagen….

Russia’s Medvedev warns of climate catastrophe
Mon Nov 16, 2009 5:18am EST

By Oleg Shchedrov

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned on Monday that climate change posed a “catastrophic” threat in some of the sharpest comments yet on a subject the Kremlin has often seemed reluctant to confront.

Although the United States said that the consensus amongst the 19 leaders at the weekend Asia Pacific summit in Singapore was that a climate change deal this December was unlikely, Medvedev made clear he felt it was a top priority.

“If we don’t take joint action, the consequences for the planet may be very distressing to the point that the Arctic and Antarctic ice can melt and change ocean levels,” he said shortly before leaving Singapore.

“All of this will have catastrophic consequences.” (continued online)

Update on Prove it! poll

On the main page of the Science Museum’s Prove It! poll the results are:
* 4777 counted in so far * 7397 counted out so far

But to their credit they’ve admitted that, “During the first few days of the poll we noticed some unusual activity. More information is available in this [following] statement.

Between Friday 23 and Wednesday 28 October the poll associated with Prove It! was manipulated through repeat voting. This was undertaken by those who wanted to be “counted in” and those who wanted to be “counted out” from the statement: “I’ve seen the evidence. And I want the government to prove they’re serious about climate change by negotiating a strong, effective, fair deal at Copenhagen.” As a result, to the best of our knowledge, the duplicate votes cast during this period were removed. Internet polls face this risk and the Science Museum has implemented additional security measures to reduce this risk.
+++++++++++

And here’s the corrected vote, “5984 individual votes were cast:
764 to counted in and 5220 to counted out. (Correct as at 16.20 Wednesday 28 October)” – no wonder it’s not on the front page.

It was the Sun wot done it. Or was it?
A sharp drop in solar activity could soon tell us how much mankind and the Sun are responsible for warming the planet – Stuart Clark
Like it or not, it will soon be time to start placing bets for a white Christmas. If most climatologists are to be believed you are almost certainly throwing your money away.

The onward march of global warming is consigning such traditional Christmas card scenes to history. No more deep and crisp and even winters for Britain, replaced instead by damp and slush and stormy.

But, if a small group of maverick scientists are right, the chances of Yuletide snow may rise dramatically over the coming decades.

The difference of opinion hinges on what role — if any — the Sun plays in climate change. The vast majority of climate scientists maintain that the solar influence is limited or even negligible, and it is the unsustainable growth of industrialised nations that is driving the climate into chaos. The mavericks contend that the Sun’s activity dwarfs the human contribution, and that there is nothing we can do except wait for the Sun to change.

Hey Anthony,
I drive 94 miles round trip each day to work. I leave my house in an urbran/suburban setting and travel through a very rural area on my way to another town. My car has an external temperature sensor on it and for the last year or so I try to make a mental note as to the temperature difference between the two very different settings. Usually, the temperature difference is 2-3 degrees F, but some days it can be as high as 4 degrees F with the rural setting obviously being cooler. Well, I’ve recently decided to start logging as many of the days as I can as well as my rough position when the reading was taken. I know you probably have a lot on your plate, but what do you think about starting a project that gets your readers in similar situations to log temperatures during their daily commute? A project like this might help to provide some actual data as to the real amount of UHI contribution to the urbanizing temperature record. I know there will be issues with different cars and temperature sensors, but the errors would be systematic (and should cancel out) as long as the reader uses the same car and notes any deviations. The differentials, however, might still be useful and very illuminating as to the amount that UHI contributes to any warming in the temperature trend. Just a thought…

Antonia Feitz (23:41:48) :

You’ve missed my posts linking to http://wermenh.com/proveit.html .

Roger Carr (03:08:28) :

This paragraph from today (17 November – Australian evening) concerns me:
BARACK Obama has said the US and China want next month’s climate talks in Copenhagen to result in a global accord with “immediate effect.”

Sounds like a treaty. (Stronger than a treaty?) (Effect == Headlines?)

If you can believe him, Al Gore at http://www.tennessean.com/article/20091115/NEWS08/911150340/Al+Gore+sees+global+shift+on+climate+change says

The original goal of having a fully completed treaty by the middle of December is now no longer a realistic goal, but there is a determined effort to get a binding political agreement among the heads of state to begin reductions immediately with specific commitments and then use that as the guideline for the negotiators to finish up their work over the following six months. This deadline has been extremely useful in moving countries around the world to go as far as they can in advance of the treaty talks.

Hmm, what else? Part 3:

There are more than 100 new designs for reactors, all of them working their way at some stage in the process toward the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for approval. None of them have financing. None of them have approval. Some have partial approval.

Part 4:

Are we going to lose jobs if we have carbon taxes or cap and trade?

Far from it. One of the bright spots in the last year has been the development, the emergence of a consensus here and in the rest of the world that this is a job creator and lots of jobs are already being created. Moreover they’re the kind of jobs that can’t be outsourced because when you retrofit homes and businesses with better lighting and windows and insulation, not to mention those who do choose solar panels and little windmills, what you get is millions of jobs in communities and they can’t be sent overseas.

[Hey Al, how about that wind project in Texas using Chinese turbines? Or
China's push to become the world leader in producing solar panels?]

Part 5:
Why do some people ridicule you about climate change?

I think there are three or four reasons why there’s a persistent group of deniers out there. Number one, there has been a huge ongoing effort by many of the largest carbon polluters to run a billion dollars every year in advertising aimed at reinforcing skepticism about this. … Secondly, … there is a really large effort that works hand in glove with the point of view of the carbon polluters. Third, the old cliché “Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt” also applies. … And then I guess the fourth element is there’s an ideological group of opponents who believe that any serious effort to solve the climate crisis is going to involve a role for government in limiting carbon emissions….

Tips & Notes isn’t a discussion forum, so I’ll refrain from suggesting four myself. Perhaps over at http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/11/16/gore-has-no-clue-a-few-million-degrees-here-and-there-and-pretty-soon-were-talking-about-real-temperature/ ….

http://ams.allenpress.com/archive/1520-0477/90/10/pdf/i1520-0477-90-10-1457.pdf

The survey was distributed by e-mail to broadcast meteorologists on the AMS listserve (numbering approximately 800) the week of 8 May 2008. There were 121 responses by 7 June, which was more than the expected goal of 100. Direct comparisons between this highly selective sample of AMS members and the larger random mail sample of all TV weathercasters published in 2002 are difficult. Different questions and methodologies were used. General patterns will be noted, but since this sample is selected from only AMS meteorologists, we can’t know from these data whether all TV weathercasters share their perspectives
or not. Presumably, AMS sealholders are more scientifically trained than the general population of all on-air weathercasters. Ultimately, we surveyed this group because they are the primary targets of the new online instructional course that will count toward AMS professional development credits

From the U.K. Met Office:

Latest research has shown that emissions of CO2 will need to be reduced close to zero by the end of this century if a rise in the mean global temperature beyond 2 °C is to be avoided. A temperature rise of no more than 2 °C is widely acknowledged as the ‘safe’ level to avoid dangerous climate change.

AMS Survey of Weathercasters on Climate Change

[A survey of weathercasters’ feelings on global warming was published in this month’s edition of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. It had some interesting findings. There were 121 respondents. 94% of the respondents had at least one of the three major seals.

“Respond to this IPCC conclusion: “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.” Only 35% agreed or strongly agreed. 34% disagreed or strongly disagreed.

“Most of the warming since 1950 is likely human induced.” A full 50% disagreed or strongly disagreed. 25% were neutral on this question. Only 8% strongly agreed.

“Global climate models are reliable in their predictions for a warming of the planet.” Only 3% strongly agreed and another 16% agreed. A full 62% disagreed or strongly disagreed.]

Drilling Back to the Future: Climate Clues from Ancient Ice on Greenland

. . .The NEEM scientists are focused on a period known as the Eemian, which began about 130,000 years ago and lasted about 10,000 years. During the Eemian, temperatures were between 5 and 9 degrees F warmer than today, and global sea level was 13 to 20 feet higher. Under many climate change scenarios, global temperatures are projected to warm a similar amount this century, so understanding the climate of the Eemian could teach us more about the potential effects of warming today. . . .

It’s those bristlecone pines again.

Ancient high-altitude trees grow faster as temperatures rise

Increasing temperatures at high altitudes are fueling the post-1950 growth spurt seen in bristlecone pines, the world’s oldest trees, according to new research.

Pines close to treeline have wider annual growth rings for the period from 1951 to 2000 than for the previous 3,700 years, reports a University of Arizona-led research team

As alarmists are ramping up for Copenhagen, drought and famine is often brought to attention as consequences of “climate change”, and more drought and reduced crops is envisioned for the future, citing e.g. Hadley Center’s “4 degrees map” (http://www.actoncopenhagen.decc.gov.uk/content/en/embeds/flash/4-degrees-large-map-final)

It would be interesting to look at how they arrive at those conclusions. Glacier ice cores and history seem to tell the exact opposite: The world is extremely dry and dusty at glacial minima. But even in our current interglacial, there have been several events of extreme aridity, and these have often coincided with phases of cold (the so called “Bond events”), e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4.2_kiloyear_event

So, we have all reasons to believe that if we should enter a period of unusual cold again, the earth can become a very dry place, and crops would fail (but maybe a CO2-enriched atmosphere would help us out a little?). But if temperatures rise, shouldn’t we rather expect a less dry world, with larger areas available for agriculture (and fertilized with CO2 as well)?

So, according to Auntie Beeb, enthusiasm for science has diminished with the growth of global warming. The Truth is finally emerging!

“When Brunel was celebrated, there was an enthusiasm for science but with global warming that has now lessened and it’s more likely people who have warned about damaging the planet, like James Lovelock.”

The rest of the article is here:-

The latest little gem from Auntie Beeb in the daily climate-climate-climate pounding we are being treated to at the moment:

Written article here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8344311.stm

Watch the video here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/scotland_video_and_audio/8364663.stm

Quotes from the written article:

“BBC Scotland’s social affairs reporter, Fiona Walker, looks at what Scotland could be like in 2080. In this first piece she writes about her trip to Thailand to see how areas of that country have disappeared under the sea and she asks whether the same fate could befall parts of Scotland.”

“This is what climate change can look like according to the researchers … They’ve already lost 1km of land … It’s too late to save the village here so they want other countries – including Scotland – to learn from their experience.”

“Professor Dr Thanawat Jarupongsakul from Chulalongkom University says it’s down to global warming and coastal erosion which he believes we all need to prepare for … there’s no time to discuss whether it’s real or not. I think it’s time now to do action.” ”

” Aideen McLaughlin from Oxfam Scotland .. said: “I think at home we haven’t got our heads round what the impact of climate change is but when you see it here actually visiting people’s doorsteps and destroying their lives and their livelihoods every day it really is a reality and I want people to see that we have to do something about it.

OK, a quick google search seems to be beyond the scope of Fiona Walker’s research.

From the Thailand Environment Monitor (World Bank):

“The loss of mangrove coverage along the shoreline has been an important factor leading to increased erosion at Ban Khun Samut Chin and other areas along the Gulf of Thailand coastline.”

“While natural causes are the main force behind the erosion on the Andaman coastline, human activities, such as sand mining, construction of jetties and breakwaters, and land subsidence from ground water usage, are behind the erosion along the Gulf of Thailand coast. Conversion of mangroves to shrimp and fish farms, the Environment Monitor finds, has reduced the coastal area’s capacity to contain erosion.”

Or this report:

http://unit.aist.go.jp/igg/rg/cug-rg/ADP/files/Saito_INPRINT_2007_2.pdf

“Coastal erosion is a crucial ongoing problem along most Asian coasts. Human activities in drainage basins and on coastal plains have led to a decrease of sediment supply to the coasts, caused mainly by dam construction, sand mining, and irrigation, and to a relative sea-level rise (i.e.,
land subsidence), caused by excess groundwater extraction. These activities, together with the destruction of coastal ecosystems, such as mangrove deforestation (e.g., Syvitski and Saito, 2007) have resulted in the present
severe coastal erosion of the megadeltas of Asia.”

” Though several causes of coastal erosion have been identified (e.g., subsidence, decrease in sediment supply, deforestation for shrimp farms), the main cause on this coast is coastal subsidence.”

“Aquaculture ponds for clam and shrimp have also accelerated coastal erosion. Once the frontal mangroves are destroyed, the ocean encroaches into the shrimp ponds, exposing the next mangroves to face the sea ”

“There is sufficient evidence that human induced relative sea level rise due to intensive land use change is overarching climate related pressures.”

On the evidence of my quick google search (which anybody could do), this is a pretty shabby effort by Fiona. Why did she fail to mention the multitude of issues relating to coastal erosion and sunsidence in this region?

Fiona’s written article (not the video) leaves us with a quote (which isn’t directly attributed to anybody): “Next month, we’re holding Scotland’s biggest ever demonstration in support of climate change in Glasgow.”

Is this the role of Auntie Beeb? Is our licence fee to be used to drum up the anxiety squad for the big worryfest next month in Glasgow.

Hi Anthony,

A quick Copenhagen update.
Hot off the press at Composites World Weekly; where I learn how to design Americas Cup Sail Boats, or Carbon Fly fishing rods, or for that matter Wind Turbine Propellors.

LM Glassfiber of Lunderskov, Denmark has just trucked by road to Copenhagen; the largest Wind Turbine Propellor blade ever made. It is 61.5 metres long, which probably makes the fan at least 125 metres in diameter.

They don’t say how many MegaWatts this critter would churn out; but I’m opining, it may be as much as 10 MW. There’s a lot of 5 MW units in service, and I don’t think they are that big (but they are damn big anyway).

Well they for sure as hell aren’t going to put this machine up in Copenhagen, to blow the seagulls away from the unclad mermaid.

It’s all about a political ploy for this rapidly fading shamozzle that the Danes are going to host next month.

So far as I know, nobody has seriously thought about going to carbon fiber for these monster blades; which may have to do with the fact that fiberglass is more tolerant of excessive loads; and especially impact damage than is carbon fiber.
Carbon fiber is certainly better for applications where the maximum loads are known; but it is much more sensitive to impact damage, and if you go over its limited strain range then it explodes with a big bang. Wind turbines inherently must withstand sudden freak loads.

Just thought you would wanna know about this coming Copenhagen dog and pony show item.

Hot off of the wire at Fox News..

EPA Climate Couple with 40 yrs experience get private anti-cap n trade video censored..

” Laurie Williams and husband Alan Zabel worked for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for more than 20 years, and they know more about climate change than most politicians. But when the couple released a video on the Internet expressing their concerns over the Obama administration’s plans to use cap-and-trade legislation to fight climate change, they were told to keep it to themselves.

Williams and Zabel oppose cap and trade — a controversial government allowance program in which companies are issued emissions limits, or caps, which they can then trade — as a means to fight climate change.

On their own time, Williams and Zabel made a video expressing these opinions.

VIDEO: EPA Employees Speak Out Against Cap and Trade

“Cap-and-trade with offsets provides a false sense of progress and puts money in the pockets of investors,” Zabel said in the video. “We think that these restrictions might not be constitutional,” he said.

Their bosses in San Francisco approved the effort by Williams and Zabel to release the tape, but after an editorial they wrote appeared in the Washington Post, EPA Director Lisa Jackson ordered the pair to remove the video or face disciplinary action. ”

November 13, 2009: NOAA is no longer updating the original version of the USHCN data; it ended in May 2007. The new version 2 currently extends to July 2009. Starting today, these newer data will be used in our analysis. Documentation and programs will be updated correspondingly.

They had a server outage most all weekend, so this is a bit of ‘backdating’: It ought to be dated 11/16/09 IMHO, but I’m happy just to have it done.

Though it does make me wonder if this had any impact:

But it is now a bit more of a “moot point”. I will still be able to use the benchmark of v2 or Not to measure how well GIStemp works as a filter; but the USA numbers will now be much better from the GIStemp product.

Now if they will just put the Andes back in South America…

The recent study from NCAR, titled “The relative increase of record high maximum temperatures compared to record low minimum temperatures in the U.S.”, makes a number of claims about record lows.

The following two quotes are taken from the press release:

“If temperatures were not warming, the number of record daily highs and lows being set each year would be approximately even. Instead, for the period from January 1, 2000, to September 30, 2009, the continental United States set 291,237 record highs and 142,420 record lows, as the country experienced unusually mild winter weather and intense summer heat waves.”

“The study also found that the two-to-one ratio across the country as a whole could be attributed more to a comparatively small number of record lows than to a large number of record highs. This indicates that much of the nation’s warming is occurring at night, when temperatures are dipping less often to record lows. This finding is consistent with years of climate model research showing that higher overnight lows should be expected with climate change.”

I believe that many of the claims made in these two quotes are not correct, based on the fact that the number of record lows set, exceeds the number of record lows expected.

How many record lows should have been expected for the period from January 1, 2000, to September 30, 2009. The press release does not say, but it can be calculated quite easily with a spreadsheet. In a stable climate (not warming or cooling), the number of record highs (or lows) expected in year “n” of the study (n=1,2,3,etc) equals the number of temperature readings for year n, divided by n.

In the case of this study, there were 1,800 weather stations, each giving 365 readings per year (ignoring leap years). 1,800 times 365 equals 657,000 temperature readings per year.

In the first year (year 1 = 1950) we expect 657,000 / 1 = 657,000 record highs and 657,000 record lows.
In the second year (year 2 = 1951) we expect 657,000 / 2 = 328,500 record highs and 328,500 record lows.
In the third year (year 3 = 1952) we expect 657,000 / 3 = 219,000 record highs and 219,000 record lows.
etc
etc

The number of record lows we expect from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2009, is:
657,000 * ( 1/51 + 1/52 + 1/53 + … + 1/60) = 118,697

However, the study finished on September 30, 2009, so we need to make an adjustment for the last part year.

The number of record lows we expect from January 1, 2000, to September 30, 2009, = 115,937

We got 142,420 record lows in the period, and we expected 115,937 record lows for the same period. So we got MORE record lows than we would expect (for a stable climate). That is 26,483 more record lows than we expect, an average of nearly 15 EXTRA record lows per weather station.

In a warming climate, we would expect even less record lows, so the number of record lows set would exceed the number expected by an even greater amount.

How can this result be used to claim:
- Unusually mild winter weather?
- A comparatively small number of record lows rather than a large number of record highs?
- Much of the nation’s warming occurring at night?
- Agreement with years of climate model research showing that higher overnight lows should be expected with climate change?

This study appears to have it all wrong about record lows.

Could you please verify my calculation and conclusions.

“New climate mitigation scenario highlights stark challenge ahead”

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2009/pr20091117.html

“Latest research has shown that emissions of CO2 will need to be reduced close to zero by the end of this century if a rise in the mean global temperature beyond 2 °C is to be avoided. A temperature rise of no more than 2 °C is widely acknowledged as the ‘safe’ level to avoid dangerous climate change.”

You will probably want to blog on the new Nature paper showing that interglacial temps in the Antarctica have likely been underestimated by a factor of 2 relative to today. It not only shows natural variation is much larger than thought, but likely destroys Hansen’s claim that climate sensitivity is “nailed ” from ice core data. If this paper is correct, it’s all but certain that CO2 forcing cannot explain the interglacial transition.

I do not know if you are back yet, so hope this is an opportune time to repost something you suggested I should bring to your attention again. It read as follows (plus some additions)

“As you seem to be around at present can you tell me what the upshot was re the long thread over at CA in 2007 regarding Central Park temperatures?
http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=1798 where you posted comments and a photo of Belvedere weather station.

I am researching this one for my Little ice age thermometers site, and the difference in temperatures between CP and West Point miltary academy 50 miles away, over the same period, is striking.

http://climatereason.com/LittleIceAgeThermometers/NewYork_USA.html

CP appears to be greatly influenced by a number of factors. The reservoir in front of Belvedere-built 1842- was filled in during 1917, became ‘Hooverville’ during the depression, then in the 1940’s was grassed over and became The ‘Great Lawn’ but then became ‘packed as hard as ashpalt’ before being renovated in the 1970’s.

As your picture showed there was also some bad siting and it seems the UHI allowance made for population was absurd-I am rather sceptical about the methodology of Karl et al.

I have around thirty papers on calculating UHI but not sure which is currently considered the ‘best.’ IMHO I think it depends greatly on the individual circumstances of the urban area. Joe D’aleo did some good posts on this aspect.

Thanks for any help you can give in unravelling the diverging records.

Hansen Mars Challenge
http://icecap.us/images/uploads/HANSENMARSCHALLENGE.pdf

Even though the computer models have never yielded a single result that matches observations, any criticism of the models is met with some sort of complex justification that is beyond the comprehension of the general public so it is readily accepted by the masses and those questioning the validity of the models are vilified by the promoters of the AGW agenda as skeptics and deniers who are in the pockets of big oil.

The sole support for AGW is the climate models, and the sole support for the climate models with respect to CO2 is the forcing parameter. There is no actual physical rational for the forcing parameter, because it was simply contrived from the assumption that observed warming of 0.6°C was due entirely to a 100ppmv increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration. There was never any verification of this parameter either by theory or observation. There is no justification for this parameter based on the physical properties of CO2, because the molecular configuration of the CO2 molecule precludes any significant effect from CO2 beyond a concentration of 300ppmv, and the current concentration is 386ppmv.

There is no justification for this parameter based on observation because the observed notch in the spectrum created by CO2 is virtually identical for both the Earth and Mars, and Mars has over 9 times the physical concentration of CO2 in its atmosphere than the Earth has in its atmosphere.

Even the reference temperature value for the parameter is faulty because the maximum temperature increase possibly attributable to human CO2 emissions is 0.1°C per century; not the 0.6°C that is used in the forcing parameter.

Ancient bristlecone pine trees found in certain parts of California and Nevada have been growing at an unprecedented rate in the last 50 years. According to a recent study, this growth has most likely been caused by warmer temperatures. In Discover magazine (Dec 09) there is an article that has short statements by “leading thinkers” about how to make “our energy supply cleaner, more efficient, and more abundant.”

The one that might be a game-changer (page 50) is by MIT chemist Daniel Nocera. He and postdoctorate fellow Matthew Kanan discovered that by adding cobalt and phosphate to water in an electrolyzer hydrogen and oxygen can be obtained – potentially – on a grand scale.

I found this on line:

The utilization of solar energy on a large scale requires efficient storage. Solar-to-fuels has the capacity to meet large scale storage needs as demonstrated by natural photosynthesis. This process uses sunlight to rearrange the bonds of water to furnish O2 and an H2-equivalent. We present a tutorial review of our efforts to develop an amorphous cobalt–phosphate catalyst that oxidizes water to O2. The use of earth-abundant materials, operation in water at neutral pH, and the formation of the catalyst in situ captures functional elements of the oxygen evolving complex of Photosystem II.

This may have come up already but I haven’t seen a post on it – the current sunspot number goes from ‘0′ to 20 or so and back again, yet there are no visible spots or just specs – unless you look at the magnetograms or X-rays and you see the Sun is really quite active! But of course, nobody prior to the Satellite Era would have registered a spot at this level on visibility.

How is the modern record integrated with the past? At what point do we stop a ’spot-free’ run?

Breaking news at this time:-
“Belgian PM Herman van Rompuy is named as the new EU president”

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8367589.stm

He wants to dispense with all national flags, he wants all European military forces to serve in the “EU military” under ’someone’s’ command, he wants to impose an EXTRA EU tax on ALL EU citizens and he insists that the unelected EU ‘parliament’ reigns supreme over all other political conclaves in the EU.
Dear United States, once we were the closest of allies but, unfortunately, we are no longer going to be permitted to be so. To those who once were our closest brothers-in-arms we bid a sad farewell from what is now the EUSSR.
Rompuy has already indicated that pursuing the AGW trail is his intention, not for the benefit of the planet but rather for the benefit of the power and control which this course of action will bestow.
We in Europe are now consigned to the dustbin of history.

Stagnating Temperatures Climatologists Baffled by Global Warming Time-Out

Global warming appears to have stalled. Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years. Some attribute the trend to a lack of sunspots, while others explain it through ocean currents. . . .

Dropped over to RC to see if there’s any reaction to the potential reality of sky falling on Had-CRU. There are many examples of why the alarmist attitude is off-putting to normal people. In an “Open Letter” to Super Freakonomics author Steve Levitt, Chicago Prof. Raymond T. Pierrehumbert, makes the following statement:

“Unlike energy, carbon dioxide accumulates in the atmosphere, and builds up year after year. It is only slowly removed by absorption into the ocean, over hundreds to thousands of years.”

Of course it is another reason why IPCC models fail regularly. The large body of peer-reviewed science attesting to the short life of CO2 in atmosphere 7-15 years average.

But Pierrehumbert writes as if castigating a school child. It is one of the most condescending, arrogant, self-inflated pieces of alarmist agitprop I’ve ever read. And a reason why alarmism fails with any who examine it closely. These people yearn to be overseers of the human condition. Those days are rapidly drawing to a close.

James Follet

Hello Anthony,

My name is James Follet, and I’m writing to you regarding a film on the global warming debate, called “The Church of Global Warming” which I have just completed. It is located at http://www.climatereview.net

What I wanted to achieve was a balanced review of the evidence for and against the case for anthropogenic global warming, a balanced view which would enable viewers to get a clearer perspective of the debate, and encourage them to form a more informed view.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite turned out that way, simply because I couldn’t find enough evidence to balance the two sides of argument: the deeper I dug, the more difficult I found it was to find evidence supporting the anthropogenic global warming case, and the more I formed the opinion that we are not undergoing dramatic climate change. Accordingly, I have adopted a more partisan tone than I originally intended, but I have still presented all sides (at least as known to me) of the debate.

My research for this film covered a wide variety of sources, including your Watt’s Up With That and Surface Stations.Org sites. There are pictures in the presentation which are derived from Surface Stations.Org, and other information has been obtained directly or indirectly from WUWT. In the film, I have tried to ensure full attribution for each chart, picture etc on that actual page, plus in a general acknowledgement section at the end.

My purpose is to let you know that sections of The Church of Global Warming, particularly the Weather Station picture(s), have been sourced from your sites, and as such I have included you in the acknowledgements. Even without specific pictures etc, I would have included you in the acknowledgements simply because of the enormous general contribution your work has provided, both on a pragmatic and inspirational level.

I have also prepared charts and slides on my own. I think for instance I may have the best graph showing average temperatures for the past century, reconstructed directly from the original HadCRUT data. I have used a two-year rolling average which removes the trend biases by both warmers and sceptics in selecting longer times.

Of course, in addition I am hoping you will be able to find the time to watch the film, and if you think it is worthwhile, comment on it on WUWT. Given WUWT is probably the premier site in the world today for even-handed analysis (or as even-handed as it is possible to be), I think Church of Global Warming is a good fit for style and content: I have endeavoured to be as balanced and factually based as I can, which is something you also strive to do.

Yours Sincerely
James Follet

Modeling and trends this just out from Spiegel Online:

Climatologists Baffled by Global Warming Time-Out
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,662092,00.html

“Global warming appears to have stalled. Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years. Some attribute the trend to a lack of sunspots, while others explain it through ocean currents.”

“Perhaps we suggested too strongly in the past that the development will continue going up along a simple, straight line. In reality, phases of stagnation or even cooling are completely normal,” says Latif.”

Betting on Warmer Temperatures

“The Hadley Center group expects warming to resume in the coming years. “That resumption could come as a bit of a jolt,” says Hadley climatologist Adam Scaife, explaining that natural cyclical warming would then be augmented by the warming effect caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.”

It’s obvious CRU will have a lot more to be concerned with than dreaming of warming schemes for awhile!

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, but just saw the latest UN claim on the results of global warming: more prostitution and spread of HIV. seriously.

Anthony,

Is it too early to start taking about a Nobel Prize for Steve McIntyre?

Linked to by WSJ. Wonder if they will pick the rest of the story up. I am not going to hold my breath. And Dave, it is, apparently, never too early to start talking about a Nobel Prize.

Add this to the list of things that are caused by climate change: ‘Climate change pushes poor women to prostitution’ according to our friends at the UN.

Anthony:

Steve M. seems to have a first-cut response to Briffa on grafting temperature records that might be worth a cross-post, since his server is way too slow… but it looks pretty substantive.

Sorry, first cut response to Phil Jones… the post is “Mike’s Nature Trick” , by Jean S. and it looks pretty substantive.

busy times for you but this WSJ opinion piece has some logic about part of the UN’s attitude to ‘overpopulation’ and CO2 control that illustrates quite well what various groups have been pushing for for years and maybe deserves and airing.

UK Independent title: Climate change survey says 83% willing to make sacrifices

By Peter Woodman, Press Association – Friday, 20 November 2009
http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/climate-change-survey-says-83-willing-to-make-sacrifices-1824663.html

The survey coincided with the release of the ICE’s report, State of the Nation – Low Carbon Infrastructure, which explained why infrastructure, alongside behaviour change and political action is fundamental to creating a low-carbon society.

The report concluded that to meet ambitious carbon targets, new and existing transport, energy, waste and water networks needed to be adapted and developed to minimise emissions and highlighted the role this infrastructure had to play in changing individual and collective behaviours.

Among the short-term solutions identified in the report were rail electrification, which had the potential to reduce the carbon impact of the railways, onshore and offshore wind farms, an upgrade of the energy grid and combined heat and power plants.

Or has visited the site recently, to get an idea of when it went down?
