The collapse of the warmist position on climate change has not impinged on politicians in Britain or Brussels, says Christopher Booker.
Nothing more poignantly reflects the collapse of the great global warming scare than the decision of the Chicago Carbon Exchange, the largest in the world, to stop trading in “carbon” – buying and selling the right of businesses to continue emitting CO2.
A few years back, when the climate scare was still at its height, and it seemed the world might agree the Copenhagen Treaty and the US Congress might pass a “cap and trade” bill, it was claimed that the Chicago Exchange would be at the centre of a global market worth $10 trillion a year, and that “carbon” would be among the most valuable commodities on earth, worth more per ton than most metals. Today, after the collapse of Copenhagen and the cap and trade bill, the carbon price, at five cents a ton, is as low as it can get without being worthless.
Here in Britain, as the first snows fall, heralding what may be our fourth cold winter in a row, it is time we addressed one of the most glaring political “disconnects” in our sadly misgoverned country.

This blog is becoming a hate-fest of any country apart from US (see the German thread).
But even worse it is becoming a source of conspiracy theories (communism, socialism UN taking over the world).
Even the madcap theories of Goddard were more sane!
A sad state of blogging!

Robinson – outside the scope of Members Interests is, for instance, the wind farm which David Cameron’s father-in-law plans to build and therefore, of course, profit from, due to government subsidies…
I guess Booker will not be moving to California. In the comments on Booker’s article, there is a reference to a looong article published in the NYT today. It is a classic scare piece on the melting of Greenland and oceans rising possibly six feet by the end of the century. Someone might want to eviscerate it.
With various countries now postponing, or even abandoning their own ETS, (including Australia – http://www.heraldsun.com.au/ipad-application/backdown-begins-on-green-mantra/story-fn6bfkm6-1225950242579) I hope that Europe and the UK become increasingly isolated over the issue of carbon trading. It may be that being in such an isolated position is the only way that Brussels and Westminster are likely to terminate such a stupid, greedy and corrupt scheme that is emissions trading. But if those involved can still make money from it, it’s highly likely that such greed will continue under the deceitful guise of ‘green’ government.
Before you can make politicians stop what they’re doing and listen to what you’re saying you must first get their attention. Some do it before Election Day by writing letters or standing on street corners and holding home made signs. Some do it on Election Day by voting for anyone but the person in office. Some very mentally challanged individuals are turned off to voting altogether and stay home and throw their shoes at the tellie. Most have forgotten that a nice strong piece of English, Scottish, or Welsh oak quickly slamed smack between the politician’s eyes does the trick quite well. Remember? Before you can make a mule do what you want them to do, you must first get their attention. However one does it, they won’t stop and listen to you until you get their attention. David – anyone with land will be interested in building these things – or covering over 35 acres with solar panels (Chinese made) for a government subsidy. My brother-in-law has 1,000 acres and it wouldn’t surprise me if he gave this a go. However I don’t think Cameron is so lacking in integrity he would pass a multi-billion pound piece of legislation just so his father-in-law can con a few pounds from the exchequer. I don’t believe this counts as a conflict of interest. If it did any relative who had an interest in any government policy, from tax cuts to benefit and pension increases, would count.
Perhaps the reason why the governments in Europe are so enthusiastic about emissions trading is they know they can make money from it, as they have with another long-term corrupt scheme.
It doesn’t matter to them that setting a floor price (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/8131700/Britains-Power-chiefs-reveal-nuclear-blueprint.html) means the system will be as ineffective, expensive and as corrupt as the other monumental system that’s been in place for decades and which also using price fixing – the Common Agricultural Policy.
The European ETS is just another form of CAP, but for carbon markets.
My mistake above. Tim Yeo is not Climate Change secretary, he’s Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee. So you know, no conflict there either!
“that “carbon” would be among the most valuable commodities on earth, worth more per ton than most metals.”
In 2002 China exported steam coal at $27/tonne. Today it imports steam coal at $116/tonne.
Iron Ore goes for $160/tonne in China.
1 tonne of liquid carbon(oil) goes for $560/tonne.(7 barrels per tonne)
So the projection that carbon would be more valuable them some metals seems correct. The projection that carbon credits would be more valuable was foolish.

Although the general public might not know the extent of scientific research, they do have an instinct for what is or is not the case.
It was long ago discovered that gravity keeps us from floating around. Yet it seems so obvious, post Newton. If a new consensus said that gravity wasn’t the pull that all objects with mass have, but was the result of only its velocity and a theory was concocted to explain why this was so, I’m sure even the most unscientific mind would consider such a theory to be nonsense.

Anthony, thanks very much for covering the utter collapse of the Chicago Climate Exchange! The Chicago media (Tribune and Sun-Times) lavished praise all over the CCX when it was first formed, and there were numerous stories since.
Not a peep lately….considering all the big-name Chicago personalities involved (Obama etc.), I’m really surprised.
This is the best I’ve found thus far:

Robinson “However I don’t think Cameron is so lacking in integrity he would pass a multi-billion pound piece of legislation just so his father-in-law can con a few pounds from the exchequer”.
A few quid? It was reported in a newspaper that he is set to clear £4,000,000!

“That’s not a politically feasible statement. However ‘the scientists told us lies’ is very feasible.”
Well said. Here is Waxman planting that very seed.
It was interesting to see a picture of Michael Evis with his solar panels heading the article. As a long term Glastonbury fan I recall a very large wind generator being set up next to the main stage in the mid 90s. It was the proud boast that this generator would supply much of the prodigious amounts of energy used by Glasto over it’s four days.
The following years festival was marked by the absence of the generator. Where had it gone? It’s a mystery, the hoo-ha surrounding it’s erection was sadly missing at it’s departure. However it was good metaphor for the then evolving tales of AGW and Glastonbury UFOs.

As they say out here in the ‘Outback’ ~ GOOD ON YA, ANTHONY!
I was laughing while reading your honest and forthright rebuke of ‘Waltman’ ~ which led me to wonder (in a conspiratorial way, of course) if his name is really Walt WIT man ~ and then….certainly his chagrin would be keen that we’re waking up ALL OVER THE GLOBE in many key areas, and ‘Yes’ indeed, we are no longer just taking vaunted ‘experts’ views as gospel (thank GOD); and men such as yourself, are shining a bright light in search of Truth ~ doing RESEARCH ~ and finding that we find mostly wealthy climate cockroaches scurrying for cover whilst carrying little signs that proudly identify themselves as socialists, communists, and the like… WELL DONE ANTHONY and THIS AMERICAN who left America and married her Aussie sweetheart, understands that no Nation is the boogyman ~ it’s the Players who have had free reign over this globe LONG ENOUGH. Let’s laugh as we uncover their sad little exploits and truly revel in the fact that their malicious behavior has linked together the best and brightest humans ever assembled, in search of Truth.
Frankly, I’m proud to read the articles and even more proud, if it were possible, to
read the great, insightful comments. Oh! Here’s a fun thought that’ll prayerfully give you a grin!

Maybe the solar panels work better in the night, with all the light show.
I pray that Booker is wrong. Excess winter deaths over this last winter in the UK were quite high from what I have read. For some strange reason I cannot find the actual stats for excess winter mortality for the winter of 2009 / 2010. Can someone help?

Jimbo. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. These elitists march out the underprivileged, putting them on the tellie only for their gain.
It’s high time the REAL issues are front and center. Rather than collecting data ~ I’m secretary of the Kingston SE, CWA and those older ladies would like NOTHING BETTER than to knit warm doonas, jumpers, etc… for their friends in England.
If I can help in that way ~ Jimbo, or anyone ~ just ask. There are 30 of them and since they don’t drink fluoridated water (as of yet) they are well over 70 years and FULL OF LIFE AND LOVE. (I’m learnin’ a lot from these feisty country women!)
Gotta go.

Okay. I said I’d do ‘something’, and I have.
Admittedly, having thousands of CWA-ers knitting dunas, socks, etc… this summer
would look like that scene from the 3 Amigos ~ “SEW LIKE THE WIND, OLD ONE…!”
But, while shearing the alpacas with Ian, we tossed the idea around.
One quick phone call to Adelaide CWA Headquaters and we’re ‘on the go’. We will be
fund raising CASH to send by Paypal to someone (preferably in perhaps a Salvation Army center, if you guys know of someone) in London, England so that they can purchase warm clothing for those in need.
If anyone has a contact in England ~ Please forward it on to me. My email address
is cindylou200228@yahoo.com. The ladies I’ve spoken to are ‘rapt’ to help those in the UK suffering from the cold. It’ll be our PLEASURE, in fact.
That’s what happens when caring people (with engaged brains) come together.
Not ‘pie in the sky, by an’ by’ but, honest to goodness – REAL HELP. I’ll keep Watts Up posted on our efforts.
