Climategate—The CTM story

Me ~ ctm

by charles the moderator

Many of you know me by my sometimes flippant moderation comments here.  Sometimes concern is expressed over my anonymity since Anthony occasionally berates some who comment here for hiding behind anonymous Internet handles.  Anthony long ago accepted my personal reasons for maintaining my anonymity and I have personally contacted others who expressed concerns and have given them explanations to which no one to date has refused to accept.

I am the head moderator here, with administrative as well as moderation privileges.  I supervise the other moderators and sometimes publish posts, or correct typos as needed.  Despite the accusations from Drs. Mann, Hansen et al., I have yet to meet my corporate overlords, view my directives from above, or receive a single cent for my hundreds of hours of services.

Here’s the story of how I was one of the very first to see the CRU files and what transpired.

On Tuesday November 17th I was at my desk, browsing the web and moderating at the same time when the now infamous post came in from user FOIA at 6:25 PST.

We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps.

We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents.

Hopefully it will give some insight into the science and the people behind it.

This is a limited time offer, download now:

http://ftp.tomcity.ru/incoming/free/FOI2009.zip

Sample:

0926010576.txt * Mann: working towards a common goal

… and so on.

As I noted previously in The CRUtape Letters™, an Alternative Explanation, when I saw this comment I immediately embargoed the comment and placed warning brackets around it for the other moderators. I have been a ‘net user long enough to be very very concerned about downloading files off a Russian server, so the first thing I was concerned about was that this was an attack on us and our users. I downloaded the file and scanned it for viruses and Trojans and it came up clean. Then I stated viewing the contents and once I saw what we had, I started firing off emails to Anthony who was in Europe at the time – such as this one less than 2 hours later:

From me:

It looks real. It looks like it contains code from MBH 98 to CRU indexes. It has over a thousand emails.

And this a few minutes later.

From me:

No bad stuff detected. This from a real mole or one of the most elaborate hoaxes ever produced.

emails from Mann, Briffa, Jones.

Reviews of papers by Jones. Code and much much more.

Anthony Watts – wrote:

ok you’ve opened it I take it? No virus or trojan detected?

A

I talked to Anthony on the phone and we decided not to go public until Anthony returned, for all sorts of reasons including potential legal issues. In this first couple of hours I also burned a CD for Steven Mosher and gave it to him, and I also contacted Steven McIntyre.  I swore both of them to secrecy until Anthony returned from Europe and he could be fully involved in the process. At this time none of us knew of the upload to realclimate.org or had noticed the “a miracle just happened” post on climateaudit.org. We believed we were exclusively sitting on The Pentagon Papers of our decade and had no knowledge that links were disseminated elsewhere.

For the next day the two Steve’s were constantly on the phone, with Mosher reading email after email to McIntyre.  I had not given the link to Mosher as I was trying to control any traceable spread of the information. We had no idea where this was all headed and caution was in order.  I made Steven Mosher promise to not electronically send a copy to Steve McIntyre, but I gave him a CD he could ship to McIntyre as long as it arrived after Anthony had returned from Europe.  They were extremely anxious to go public and Mosher kept begging me for permission and my response was very low key. “If this is as important as it appears to be, then two or three days won’t make any difference, besides, we need to keep my word to Anthony”.

Then on the morning of the 19th we became aware that CRU was in lockdown mode and sending word that files were circulating on the Internet. I immediately found the comment on Jeff ID’s site by simply doing a Google search on the ftp site link.  Jeff hadn’t noticed this post because he was out hunting during the above period. This was a game changer, CRU was trying to lock down the files and we were not exclusively in possession. Anthony was in the air about to land in Dulles but the cat was now out of the bag and Steve Mosher started posting on Lucia’s blog and about the same time I posted an email on Bishop Hill’s blog in the Caspar and the Jesus paper thread under the username devilinthedetails.  I believe Steve Mosher may have contacted Tom Fuller around the same time.

Just as this was all breaking open, our anonymous leaker expressed concern that their revelations were being ignored or missed, a comment which I no longer have as I overwrote it  with the following:

FOIA (13:16:16) : edit

[A lot is happening behind the scenes. It is not being ignored. Much is being coordinated among major players and the media. Thank you very much. You will notice the beginnings of activity on other sites now. Here soon to follow. ~ ctm]

Now I get to go all Andy Rooney Paul Harvey [D’0h! ~ ctm]  on y’all. Many wonder why I selected Steven Mosher to be the first recipient of the files. Well, I knew he was eminently qualified to examine them, much more qualified than myself. Proximity was also a factor.  Steve Mosher is my roommate. So I saw him sweating on the phone with Steve McIntyre for a day and a half while I was calmly making coffee in the kitchen espousing patience. And since this story is too important to have any contributors remain anonymous, my name is Charles Rotter and I live in San Francisco. And that’s the rest of the story.

Charles: If all the moderators in the world were as quick witted and even tempered as you, the world would be better place. Thanks for all you do and don’t do. ctm~ is a first class act, bar none.

OT.
“Lord Monckton’s main Sydney presentation, introduced by Professor Ian Plimer, at 5.30pm on Wednesday 27 January 2010 in The Grand Ballroom of The Sheraton on The Park, Elizabth Steet, Sydney.”
Might see if I can get to this.

On behalf of future generations of scientists in climatology, I thank you Charles for all your efforts to restore integrity to this field of study!
Young scientists also need you services in other disciplines – e.g., astronomy, space studies, astrophysics, solar studies, cosmology, etc.
Be kind to puppets like Drs. Mann, Hansen et al., follow the money trail upward, and ask those distributing public funds why they have corrupted and destroyed the most basic ingredients of scientific integrity.
Again, thanks! I wish you well.

Whenever I read someone living in San Fransisco (A bit like Wellington, NZ, only much bigger) I start running the lyrics to Scott McKenzie “San Francisco” in my head, but change San Francisco to Fat Stans Disco. I dunno, maybe it’s my infantile sense of humour but makes me chuckle every time.

I just finished reading the annotated abridged version of the emails by John Costella. I was overwhelmed by the strong feelings of righteousness this group of scientists had for themselves and each other. They truly believed they were doing what they thought was the right thing to do. Even though the data was messy. Jesus complex? Maybe. Feelings of self-importance made larger by a self-important corrupt Ivory Tower system? Maybe. Harmful to the field of science in general, even if all you do is study ants? Sadly, yes.

Pleased to meet you ‘Charles the Moderator’. The self control exhibited by you, Anthony, and the rest of team WUWT in disseminating the Climategate story is truly exemplary. We might have avoided the whole global warming nonsense entirely if the MSM were as circumspect as you all were in the handling of this story. *bows in your direction*

Charles T M…..has a great sound today. I surely do appreciate your good work. I am probably one of the worst of the ones needing spelling corrections to ever leave a remark here. The past couple of months have been very exciting to say the least for those of us who are interested in the Climate debate. It is so good to come to a level headed site such as WUWT and know that the moderation is going to allow all but the most extreme posts to pass even if they have to make some serious changes to words to make them worthy to be on the blog.
Many thanks my friend and you are my friend as you have along with several others a couple of Steves and an Anthony a Bender or two made this site one of the most educational I have ever had the joy to experience.
I hope you are greatly blessed in this life and the one that follows for your good honesty and devotion to the truth.
If you are ever near Vigo Alabama give me a call the name is in the book for Calhoun County Alabama. We can at least share a good cup of coffee.
my thanks,

I can hint that I’m a tiny little part of it (couple of minutes). Others carry most of the program; and it will be tomorrow soon enough to discuss it then. IIRC, an online version becomes available after airtime. So keep checking in on WUWT tomorrow and I’ll post an excerpt of the press release / link. This thread is about “~ctm” so…
Meanwhile, back On Topic:
Thank you Charles, for a job well done! (And I know that this exposure won’t change your position on anything. Only beer does that 😉
And what a marvelous story! Suspense. Intrigue. International secrets. Russian servers, international flights, clandestine meetings and secret disks (in case of capture? 😉 Government Ministries and Evil Doers in High Places. All you need is to find a way to work into it: a Turkish Bath, car chase, shoot out, bar scene, and scantily clad dancers somehow. 😉
So, what do you think, Tom Selleck? Sean Connery? WHO should play CTM in the movie version?

Thank you Charles.
You literally helped save the world from a catastrophe.
Next time I cross the bridge, I’ll look up and expect to see you in cape and cowl.

Tights! AND Tights! While it is San Francisco, you need more than just Cape and Cowl 😉

Over the past two decades I’ve been quietly collecting and archiving newspapers and magazines with containing significant political, cultural and social events. I have several hyping AGW as I thought that sooner or later this sham would be exposed and my grandchildren, sometime in the far future would appreciate seeing how widely and deeply held this mass hysteria had been. I’m still waiting for the cover stories and front page headlines that show the first glimmers of common sense returning after the release of the CRU e-mails, but alas, there’s nothing emanating from the mainstream media yet. However, I remain hopeful.
Charles the Moderator, thank-you for all the effort you’ve invested to insure everyone’s point of view is heard and that we all play nice. One day a movie will be made on the madness of AGW and the breaking of it’s back with Climategate. I expect the white hats will be people like you and Anthony from vWUWT, Steve McIntyre from Climate Audit and several others who made it a mission to out the truth.

Pamela Gray (20:58:04) : I disagree completely. I believe that they knew exactly that what they were doing was wrong and unscientific. They agreed to be complicit for monetary goals and now only regret their undoing. If they believed in what they “reported”, why the cover-up and hypocrisy? Why were they so defensive, even among themselves? The entire lot should thrown into jail for killing innocent people, costing fortunes and creating a world wide Ponzi scheme. Perhaps a few will escape to Brazil, but they will be found out.

Great job ctm…
From the way it happened, it really points out to somebody from inside CRU which has good knowledge of WUWT and its position in the blogsphere. The funny thing also is that on other sites, some usual pro-AGM commenters kind of disappeared at the same time that those came out… I think those people did more and actually participated in deception activities on other sites…

I’m a fairly new, but confirmed aficionado of this blog. The last place I would expect to find an AGW skeptic would be SF though! I was just in the City this morning, on Filmore and Sacto enjoying a few great cups of not Starbucks coffee while reading WUWT on my laptop!
Would love the opportunity to listen and learn more about this fascinating subject from you and Steve!

Bravo Charles. Thank you, and thank Anthony and everyone else who seem to work around the clock maintaining the best place to hang out in cyberspace. If your travels take you back to Nevada, and you want to do some measurments in places that most definitely don’t have UHI, you are welcome for a 4wd trip for 100 miles, 500 miles, or as far as you like across the state of Nevada. If we are going to reminisce, my favorite days at WWT were the Catlain Crew threads. Those were daily howls of laughter. Left-wing theatrics plus video games, with a little Gilligan Island mixed in. Not one bit was real, it was all carefully orchestrated theatre. I thoroughly enjoyed everyone picking apart and mocking the reports.
