Department of Homeland Security goes off the deep end – now plans to battle “climate change” in addition to terrorists

Not content to keep to the terrorism prevention mission for which they were founded, DHS’s Janet Napolitano now plans to battle a religious war of “climatic jihad”.  Here’s what happened the last time Washington DC took on weather in February 2010 (but not climate). The capital was shut down of course. Now that’s “environmental justice”. Look for pat downs at airports soon for those carrying concealed carbonated beverages.

Napolitano Says DHS to Begin Battling Climate Change as Homeland Security Issue

Friday, December 17, 2010
By J. Brady Howell

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (CNSNews.com/Penny Starr)

(CNSNews.com) – At an all-day White House conference on “environmental justice,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that her department is creating a new task force to battle the effects of climate change on domestic security operations.

Speaking at the first White House Forum on Environmental Justice on Thursday, Napolitano discussed the initial findings of the department’s recently created “Climate Change and Adaptation Task Force.”

Napolitano explained that the task force was charged with “identifying and assessing the impact that climate change could have on the missions and operations of the Department of Homeland Security.”

According to the former Arizona governor, the task force would address specific questions, including:

“How will FEMA work with state and local partners to plan for increased flooding or wildfire or hurricane activity that is more serious than we’ve seen before? What assistance can the Coast Guard bring to bear to assist remote villages in, for example, Alaska which already have been negatively affected by changes up in the Arctic?”

The findings from the Homeland Security Department (DHS) also asked: “(H)ow can we focus on how climate change is going to affect our rural citizenry including those who live along our borders both northern and southern?”

The conference did not define “environmental justice,” and the only reference to the task force that can be found is on the DHS Web site. The June 2010 Department of Homeland Security Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan states “climate change has the potential to accelerate and intensify extreme weather events which threaten the nation’s sustainability and security.”

  1. How will FEMA work with state and local partners to plan for increased flooding or wildfire or hurricane activity

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had best get the plans set for increased hurricane activity since we are experiencing about zero landfalls per year these days.

  2. Total insanity.

(And how would AGW be “negatively affecting Alaska”? They mean “positively” affecting, maybe?)

  3. “(H)ow can we focus on how climate change is going to affect our rural citizenry including those who live along our borders both northern and southern?”
    =====================================================
    How about protecting them first?

  4. Don’t knock the Federal Government being closed for three whole days, have you any idea how much money that saved the US taxpayer ?

It also proved true the old axiom that Hell would freeze over if the New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl.

  5. The June 2010 Department of Homeland Security Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan states “climate change has the potential to accelerate and intensify extreme weather events which threaten the nation’s sustainability and security.”

No, the only thing threatening all of our nations’ sustainability and security is the sorry bunch of corrupt, self-loathing Leftist politicians and bureaucrats determined to take the once-free nations down by any means. Right now they are succeeding, and a lot of well-meaning-but-naive-to-the-point-of-childlike people are buying this bullshit.

  6. Looks like these dummies are bound and determined to blow billions more adding to their already astronomically-sized deficit.

Start stocking up on Kraft Dinner, US citizens… your taxes are going up and your country is going for broke. It might be a smart idea to also start shoving your money into your mattresses.

    This is no joke.

  7. Perhaps the 70,000 TSA team could each take a tub of snow to work – this might solve the snow drift problem.

(I’m assuming that they are allowed to take their tubs home, and (obviously) that the body scanners could melt the snow).

And in reciprocation, I am sure that the snow plow operators could find a terrorist or two. (Well, a few more than the TSA, anyway).

This all seems very logical and efficient.

    Next problem.

  8. For ANYONE in the DHS (let alone the Secretary) to be spending even 10 minutes on CAGW. . . oops: Climate Change. . . oops: Climate Disruption (or whatever term the true belivers come up with after Europe and N.A. are (probably) totally snowed under and frozen this winter); is dereliction of duty in the extreme. She deserves to be fired just for this offense alone (not to mention the others).

  9. ” …the first White House Forum on Environmental Justice..” Whaaaaa . .?

I keep checking the calendar. It’s not April 1.

OK. OK. Maybe I’m just having a bad dream.

If not . . . . Dang. We’ve got two more years of this derangement.

  10. Actually, this will help for hurricanes, global cooling caused by solar changes, and other weather events. The name is stupid, the idea is fine.

  11. Now that the opposition party has taken control of the Congress, expect this administration to go completely off the rails. Two more years of this stuff, folks. 2010 was only the first step in a one-two combination.

  12. This group is probably being monitored for Thoughtcrimes. Thinkpol and the Ministry of Love are watching you.

  13. Homeland security seem to be engaged in empire building. In addition to their new climate change responsibilities they have also recently decided to become copyright police, seizing and shutting down a bunch of websites (without judicial due process). And they are also the bunch that are after Assange (not much due process there either).

This is a very dangerous trend. To aid their terrorist seeking mandate homeland security operate under much less legal constraint than for example the FBI. They appear to be willing and able to step around due process and the judiciary. And they have borderline fascist nutcases like Leiberman providing oversight.

I wouldn’t be surprised if their next uniform came with a brown shirt.

  14. I’m glad to know that DHS has completed all their planning and training for weather emergencies, terror bombers and the like, so they can now move on to planning for climate change. Makes me feel all warm and cozy. Why, the new TSA procedures have probably already reduced global warming by discouraging unnecessary flying!

How much is this going to cost us, and will it distract anyone at DHS from their real jobs?

  15. I’m 100% behind the concept of Environmental Justice. Can’t wait for the Energy, Environment, Food and Climate Fraudsters to be stripped of their offices, funding and freedom!

  16. What are they going to do about extreme weather? Are they going to make warmer coats, build more snow plows, and grow short season crops? Maybe they are going to regulate how much snow can fall from the sky and how much water can be put in a river?

It seems the free market is the best weapon we have against climate change. When the need for new products arise, someone will appear who will make them. And that is all that climate change means. Our spending priorities will change as our environment changes.

Considering that extreme weather has been recorded for millenniums, why are we surprised that it is ongoing? Look at all the peat bogs under the Arctic permafrost. How do they think the peat got there? Look at the various elevations of coast lines in Great Britain. How did the coast lines change so drastically in huge jumps?

Look at all the flooded ancient cities and civilizations off the coasts of all the continents. Now that is climate change.

Unless DHS has never heard of FEMA, I can’t imagine why they would need a special task force for dealing with such an ancient and obvious fact of life.

  17. Well obviously that border enforcement thing, groping grandma and grandpa, in their charter is too tough to do — so what is wrong with them chasing after a myth. Who will know when they caught it anyway? How cool is that?

I suppose they can cut off these funds for this stupidity as easy as for the EPA.

Guess they haven’t figured out the USA is broke. That’s the trouble with big government, stopping it. Even the insane over weight fat one …

    This administration is insane.

Some people knew that years ago. The question now, is how to remedy the situation. I recall the Obama mentioning something about more than one way to skin this cat (referring to environmental issues and the failed cap and tax bill). Meet DHS, the new ECO KGB.

  19. They’ve never caught a terrorist and between 70-100% of guns and bombs get through inspections during testing, so it’s my opinion they decided they could do better by competing with the USPS…”handling packages.” This is fitting as far as government leadership goes because Napolitano has no experience “handling packages.”

  20. This is just as ludicrous, as when Obama’s chief of NASA Charles Bolden proclaimed during an interview, that his #1 priority was “outreach to the Muslim nations”. Funny, I thought NASA’s mission was manned and unmanned space exploration.

Makes as much sense as Homeland Security scope including “climate change”.

  21. Lest anyone forgets, DHS is an arm of the law enforcement community. Orwell is alive and well. At least, his ominous premonitory is.

Cold is hot and war is peace, and soon, to say otherwise, will be criminal.

    Not so much OT, http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/12/16/trusted-traveler-program-lets-mexicans-skip-some-airport-security-checkpoints/

I can only come to one of two conclusions. Either this administration thinks very little of the citizens they are sworn to protect, or they’re racists that don’t consider our friends to the south adequate for the purposes of groping. They apparently assume criminal intent from their own countrymen before others. If having one’s own opinion and conclusions regarding climate change is criminalized, then maybe they’re right.

  22. So did they ASK folks in remote Alaska if they needed help from the Feds? I hope the governor replied “Nuts”.

  23. According to the EPA, humans exhale approx. 1kg of CO2 per day.

Currently there is according to both the GAO and DHS an estimated 12 million illegals in the U.S. That means 12 million kg of CO2 is being produced each day….creating a clear and present danger to our climate.

    Dammit, Janet! Get on it!!

That’s over 2 Million Tons of illegal CO2/year going unchecked!!

  24. Is this woman terminally stupid or what ? Do these idle politicians have to take classes in stupidity; or does it just come naturally to them ?

Maybe that’s what indicates to persons, that they should be come politicians; they are just dumber than a box of rocks, and too stupid to land a real job.

This is the woman who as a former governor of Arizona couldn’t even keep a few illegal Mexican invaders out of her State.

So now she is going to protect all of us from the weather.

  25. “What assistance can the Coast Guard bring to bear to assist remote villages in, for example, Alaska which already have been negatively affected by changes up in the Arctic?”

I imagine the Coast Guard will have to start boarding TSA agents to administer pat-downs of the poor refugees fleeing all the starved polar bears and flooding due to all that floating sea ice melting and raising the sea level…oh, and all those monsoons up there.

    …or something.

And they actually spend taxpayer money (and their time) on such nonsense.

  26. As a friendly tip to my Southern Amercians, wouldn’t it be better to tilt at enemies, rather than windmills?

  27. Te ‘Daily Onion’ could not come up with a better parody of how deranged CO2 obsession makes people.
It is so far past time for Janet to be an ex-government bureaucrat……

  28. I think this potentially is a very scary development. It is my understanding that down here in Washington DC the EPA now has an enforcement branch that includes an armed component. The EPA had agents at the range I use, practicing their firearm skills.

Environmental justice will now be assured with whatever means is necessary.

  29. Why is the idea of a warming planet always so negitive with these people?
I’m from BC and was looking forward to the predicted rise in temp. All we have gotten in the last few years though is a longer “ice out” on our lake and poorer corn because of late frost in the spring and early frost in the fall. If this is the way it’s going to be, I’m moving south!

  30. This is quite, quite mad. Even the language is messianic, never mind the intent. I hope your congress sorts this bloody lot out.

  31. Well considering the pathetic job they’ve been doing letting guns and explosives on planes failing 50 out of 70 tests in one airport and 30 out of 60 in another plus some well publicized events like letting a man bring carry on luggage contain a loaded Glock …..

Maybe they can do for “climate warming/change” what they have done for security! Make it into a laughing stock to the whole world. Oh wait they’ve been beat to the punch by Hansen, Mann & Jones. Oh well with a bit of effort they’ll fit right in.

Battling climate change? Tide, I command thee not to come in!! I mean it! Don’t make me come out there!

  32. “Environmental justice,” “social justice”_ All hubris from the self-rightous global socialists! What justice did Lenin, or Pol Pot or, Stalin (“socialism in one country”), or Hitler (“National Socialism”) or Mao ever bring to their people? Obama’s scheme is neither good for the environment nor just.

  33. I looked through the replies on the linked article.
She got a 100% hostile reaction from the electorate. Congrats.

  34. Everything is a security issue to these nitwits, except real security issues like Islamic terrorism. Chinese and Russian spying, the border, organized foreign crime, industrial espionage. No. What these politicians (spit) are most concerned about is the weather, childhood obesity, and capitalism.

  35. Here’s how the EPA defines “environmental justice”:

Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.

    In other words, lawsuit bait.

  36. Truth is, battling the effects of climate change….

….is a hell of a lot easier than doing their real job

  37. How do they define how much ‘change’ is needed before they commence ‘battle’ – and then – when do they know wben it has been ‘restored’ sufficiently to withdraw forces?

    Just wondering

    Douglas

  38. The DHS just needs to develope a small snow shovel they can attach to the muzzle of an assault rifle, so while they’e not shooting terrorists, they can be out shoveling that jihadist white stuff from walks and driveways. Works for me.

  39. Napolitano explained that the task force was charged with “identifying and assessing the impact that climate change could have on the missions and operations of the Department of Homeland Security.”

Well, one impact runaway global warming will have on Homeland Security is that airport inspections will be faster. It’ll be so hot that everyone will travel in their skivvies and there’ll be no need for metal detectors or pat-downs ;o)

On the other hand, if we head into another ice age, air travel will slow to a crawl as everyone will be in long underwear, wearing several sweaters, and bundled up in greatcoats and woolen scarves. Watch out for terrorists hidden between layers of clothing.

There. That saved the task force a lot of time. Meeting adjourned. They can all go home now.

  40. With all this bluster over the “law” gettin tough on climate crime, I am again reminded that so far not a single climatologist has sued anyone for defamation. It’s not like those nasty skeptics haven’t been making some pretty serious allegations, and one would think these good scientists would be itching to file suit, but nada.

Gee, I wonder why… Might have something to do with the rules of evidence? Like you have to prove the allegations are false? That might tend to cause blow-back methinks. Perhaps the Department of Homegrown Insecurity would be better used investigating climatologists, but that’s just dreamin.

  41. What will FEMA do in the case, that the weather hampers their operations?

    Lets see now,…..

Page One of Janets Bumper Book of U.N Field Operations – now with 50% more turnkey/stepwise counter insurgency plans. (Bonus fold out map of North America, formerly ‘United States of…’, now Economic Zone 4.1)

F = Forget the victims. (What about the opportunities for cheap real estate? Gulf anyone?)
E = Engineer a PR response that looks good but achieves nothing. (Wait a few days, no need to rush in)
M = Massage local Pork Barrel politics to ease the way for disaster capitalism.
A = Aggravate the suffering by calling survivors “Refugees”, detain and then shoot them. (Did we mention the National Guard will counter this insurgency, cos, you know people with no homes, no food and no water compare favourably with the Taliban. )

So if it snows so much the power goes out and you run out of food and heating oil, and you get a knock at the front door from some folks dressed like Blackwater/XE, sporting FEMA day-glo black vest,…please, I beg you,…don’t answer it.

    Did I miss anything?

  42. In France, IPSL scientist and political activist Jean Jouzel, IPCC Vice President, warned of a “Plan d’Adaptation au Réchauffement Climatique” i.e. a plan to adpat to the effects of Global Warming… The guy announced this with a straigth face meanwhile it is more a plan for cold winters that needs to be developped since trains, cars and railways are all affected by snow.

  43. That fits very well into the bigger picture:

~ Some climate scientists conspring at unprecedented cost for the american taxpayer, and homeland security doesn’t care.

~ Big finance, big oil and influential left individuals lobbying for unprecedented climate change profits at unprecedented cost for the american taxpayer, and homeland security doesn’t care.

~ Obama’s administration threatening / paying / spying governments, to push through an agenda at unprecedented cost for the American taxpayer, and homeland security doesn’t care.

  44. Asked out of snow-free climate ignorance – do Stevenson screens and/or MMTS devices get a cap of snow on top? Anyone looked at this?

  45. I wonder what well-connected lobbyist influenced the DHS’s decision this time around? If you do some research, you’ll see the only reason airports have full-body scanners is because L-3 Communications has well-connected lobbyist.

    http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/clientlbs.php?lname=L-3+Communications&year=2010

Some say this country is turning into socialism or fascism. I disagree. I believe it is turning into a plutarchy, which is a combination oligarchy and plutocracy. In an oligarchy, rule is by the privileged few and plutocracy is rule by the wealthy, which in this case is big corporations. L-3 Communications is a prime example of how the big corporations rule. Also recently the DHS shut down several websites, most of which related to illegal file sharing such as through Bit Torrent. How is illegal file sharing a national security risk? It isn’t. But the movie and music industry hate such websites and the MPAA and RIAA has powerful lobbyist. (Sidebar: you should always pay for your music and movies; I do not condone illegal file sharing.) Corporations don’t lobby just to get a tax credit. They do it because it works. So if the DHS keeps expanding its arms, I must wonder what lobbyist bribe is the DHS listening to now.

How much longer until the DHS shuts down websites like this one because it offends a big business or one of the privileged few? You have to wonder.

    Enjoy:

  46. No more dumber than making your pilot on the flight you will take to be patted down and searched and his small pocket knife taken away from him when he has a crash axe in the cockpit. And– if he wants to kill everyone, he can just push down on the controls until you crash or just pull up on the controls until you crash. Either way will work. What a bunch of fools we are for letting our govt. get out of control. I guess we will pay someday. Maybe we are now.

“Don’t knock the Federal Government being closed for three whole days, have you any idea how much money that saved the US taxpayer ?”

No doubt very little if anything. Those GS-12 drones playing solitaire in their little grey cubicles lose not a cent when the government “shuts down.” Full pay carries through unscathed after a pro forma declaration by the White House. Thus it has always been.

  48. When some time ago I came across a (military?) assessment that Global Warming was a threat to national security equal to terrorism, or greater, I had an “Uh-oh!” moment. The door had been opened a crack, to give us a peek at vast arbitrary state intervention by force into the economy.

    Words have consequences!

  49. The concept of environmental justice has been around for a decade. Until now it’s been a conspiracy of “civil rights” activists with predatory lawyers, to sue cities and companies for leaving dirty industrial sites in slum areas. The net effect (along with millions for the lawyers) has been to forbid new industrial development in slum areas, thus forbidding employment for poor people. None of this is “unanticipated consequences”, all is part of the plan.

Now we have Heimatssicherheitsdienst expanding the concept to service the whole country. And I do mean service in the cattle-breeding sense, not serve.

  50. The idiots have to act busy and important.
I am sure if they catch granny flying a plane with snow balls packed in her bloomers, she will have to be detained. Snow is very rare.

This stunt following one where she said 1.5 years ago that soldiers coming back from war were a threat tells me she is deranged.

She can ‘splain herself in hearing infront of the House.

  51. “What assistance can the Coast Guard bring to bear to assist remote villages in, for example, Alaska which already have been negatively affected by changes up in the Arctic?”

8:11 est Fairbanks is -30. Pretty negative if you ask me.

  52. Not being american I’ve got to ask – with all the (supposed) checks and balances built into the american system is there no sane person with current authority who can prevent Janet Napolitano from taking this astonishing leap in mission creep? I find it amazing that she has the authority to do this without congress having to ok it.

  53. Almost as bad as the US Army, Navy and joint chiefs saying that climate change is one of the biggest threats to national security. The Navy even has officers who are oceanographers who are making comments about the climate and military impications of an ice-free arctic.

  54. I personally feel this is just one more piece of evidence that the Hulk’s great enemy has not been defeated… I of course speak of:

    The OBAMANATION

har-di-har. But seriously, the gustopo just can’t stop can they? Ah well, the rats are not stupid because they flee the ship… its that captain that insists on going down with the ship that is the foolish one.

  55. This has nothing to do with emergency response to climate change or changing the climate. It has everything to do with what is being said about climate change and by whom. Now they can claim that what is said about the climate can be deemed a threat to the nation. Creepy mission indeed. Most sheeple will be unaware of the significance of this move. Check, ….

  56. I wonder when the reign of Janet Incompetento will end. It is bad enough that she wants to practically strip search 100% of people getting on planes to catch the 0.000001% who wants to blow planes up, but now she want to put the incandescent light bulbs in the same league as Osama Bin Laden.

  57. JoeH. Part of the problem is that Homeland security was set up after 9/11. As with most things set up as reaction to something, it was not well thought out. It was given way too much power.
Congress is a strange thing they love their power, but they love even more ceding power to regulatory agencies.
Congress could cut of funding to Homeland security for this purpose. I hope they do but I am not holding my breath.

  58. The headline for this post ,
“Department of Homeland Security goes off the deep end – now plans to battle “climate change” in addition to terrorists”
does not reflect the position that Janet Napolitano takes in the actual story.
Napolitano is not going to battle climate change. She is taking the projected impacts of global warming into account in providing for the nation’s security.
If one accepts that natural disasters and climate refugees will impact the people of the US in years to come, Homeland Security and specifically FEMA , should take that into account in their planning.

  59. Maybe, instead of looking for terrorists in car bombs, they will look for vehicular ‘CO2 bombs’ that will heat the atmosphere and force the world to a tipping point that will destroy life as we know it.

Keep an eye out and report to your local Homeland Security office, any large tracts of land covered in running, unattended vehicles.

No doubt we will see this insanity on Oz shortly.

  60. Now we know why they did not close Gitmo. They are going to ship all the snowflakes off for intensive interrogation.

  61. This move by DHS makes perfect sense in government bureaucracies. DHS has not yet found an effective source of external revenue. Stopping and arresting illegal aliens doesn’t work. You cannot extract any fines from them because they have no money. Molesting children at the airport may be entertaining, but that does not bring in any revenue, nor does the petty pilferage of travelers trinkets by their cohorts while the TSA gropes the travelers.

This is a move to go for the big money of carbon taxes. They are not likely to win this as the EPA has been staking out this territory. But they are specializing in travelers who have money, so the coming interstate highway inspections will offer all types of opportunities for fees, licenses, and fines; especially if they can attach something to fuel costs. What they really need is a spectacular vehicle bombing to create a crisis that only they can “fix.” This will give them an excuse for the vehicle inspections with licenses and fees to be added after about 1-2 years.

  62. Department of Homeland Security .. now plans to battle “climate change” in addition to terrorists” – Now that makes a lot of sense. Terrorists can be dealt with by off duty hot-dog vendors and facebook users but a 0.7 degree temp rise in 100 years? .. that’s scary – that obviously requires big money, guns and missiles.

  63. If BigSis has the authority to fight climate change then she can seize property, right? Your beach house was blown away by a hurricane and, now, BS will seize your property. For your own protection. Because climate change has made it uninhabitable. Blah blah…blah.

  64. I had to go to LA late last week. In the course of the trip, I had to undergo a rapid climate change of nearly 10F. Fortunately, it seems that I was able to adapt and did not need to call in DHS. It could be that the problems have a delayed onset, but so far, I have suffered no ill effects. Before reading this press release, I was unaware of just how lucky I am to have adapted — good genes I guess. In anycase, its comforting to know that DHS stands ready to assist others who are less able to adapt.

  65. Nasty, although not that too unexpected. Far easier to be seen ‘winning’ on climate terrorism than real terrorism – as we well know the climate figures can be made at first glance to show whatever is needed, all the motivation is there..

  66. Graeme’s First Law of Bureaucracy

“Any government department, once constitituted, will increase it’s scope of operations without internal limitation until it holds control for the entire scope of operations of the government.”

    Graeme’s Second Law of Bureaucracy

“Any government department will seek revenue in direct proportion to its scope of operations.”

The impact of the first and second laws is that DHS is treading on the turf of the EPA.

Govt dept turf war coming up.

  67. “Environmental justice” is the most absurd, ridiculous, insulting newspeak phrase I’ve ever heard in my life.

  68. So Janet Napolitano is going to battle the climate.

As I recall my history, Caligula marched down to the beach to battle his fellow god, Poseidon, god of the sea. Came back with some sea shells.

I suspect he was more successful than Janet will be.

“This has nothing to do with emergency response to climate change or changing the climate. It has everything to do with what is being said about climate change and by whom. Now they can claim that what is said about the climate can be deemed a threat to the nation.”

Exactly, they are building a “consensus” for political action – no need for that pesky House of Reps if they do it right.

    ===========================

Poor Eadler. Going to side with the bureaucrats who have pretty much the intelligence quotient of “Stormtroopers.”

    Pathetic, really.

Well….while you trust your Big Sister “Janet Napolean” and her evil male twin, “Barak Hussein”….go for it.

They may fool you….but they don’t fool us!

  76. And Janet Imcompetano vaults back into the lead for most brain damaged functionary in Chairman Zero’s administration, once again edging out AG Holder. 2012 seems so far away. I hope we survive these commie morons.

  77. The following headline makes about as much sense as the original:

“(CNSNews.com) – At an all-day White House conference on space aliens Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that her department is creating a new task force to battle the effects of space aliens on domestic security operations.”

Ms. Napolitano further stated that “after viewing many informative science fiction movies, the need for developing a battle plan against space aliens had taken precedence over developing a battle plan against islamic terrorists foreign terrorists bad guys…”

  78. Janet the incompetent can’t secure our borders, if she takes on climate change nothing will ever come of that either.

“Homeland security seem to be engaged in empire building.”

    No Kidding? Hardly noticed.

Power Corrupts and they are fleeting, courting with desire for absolutes. These are base desires and not the product of stupidity, incompetence, insanity or any motives other than the simple desire to expand and conquer whatever they can touch until they are stopped. Let us begin the process.

Find the bomber, not the bomb.

  80. I’m waiting for Janet to notice that by the same logic she’s using with AGW, educational shortcomings, heavy traffic on our highways, obesity, speeding, mistreatment of chickens, the goat shortage and a host of other problems affect national security. Her mandate is unlimited! Now that I think about it, the performance of President Obama and the Joint Chiefs have a huge effect on national security and also fall under Janet’s definition of her authority.

  81. The climate scenarios which would overlap with any security issues would, I think, specifically be “climate conflicts” over water, food, and energy shortages. They also project refugee populations, as well as a supposed increase in frequency and intensity of natural disasters.

“Climate conflicts” and “climate change response” means training the Coast Guard in actions to control rioting, which would be brought about by resource shortages, as far as I can see. At least it has been spoken of in those terms already in an Australian Defense White Paper.

It is interesting how these pure white doves of the left, who normally do not have a hawkish bone in their bodies, suddenly find their inner hawk when it is a question of directing security efforts at our own population.

  82. Hot air? In Washington, sounds right.

A snow job? Look out your window. Am near Washington, and I see a bunch of it right now.

    Both? Neither?

How about we just defund the entire agency in the appropriations bill, and make them rush in, begging to get any monies back, to support the few line items that represent things worth doing in the first place.

  83. This move by the DHS makes perfect sense. Who else is more qualified to torture the numbers until they confess to CAGW?

  84. I think they should be a little more concerned about the agreement between Iran and Venezuela to acquire medium range missiles, positioned in Venzuela, that can hit the US soft underbelly. 2012 cannot come soon enough.

  85. Anthony, I know the Department of Homeland Security…..I train with the Department of Homeland Security…..and believe me, WUWT ain’t the Department of Homeland Security! Thank God for that!!

*sigh* The entire US Government drinks climate-change Kool-Aid, believe me. Military, DHS, Public Health, EPA, State, DOE, whatever. Drives me nuts! Their faith in CAGW dogma is absolutely unflappable, sad but true.

Drop me a note if you ever want advice for how to respond to a smallpox attack…

  86. I suspect Ms. Napolitano would be as adept at aiding the people of Alaska improve their survivability prospects as Kate Gosselin

  87. Hey, why not? If they didn’t go after the climate, they’d have to actually improve the economy, protect us from terrorists, fix Social Security, etc. “Fixing” a non-existent problem is certainly a lot easier than addressing real ones, eh?

  88. eadler:

If one accepts that natural disasters and climate refugees will impact the people of the US in years to come, Homeland Security and specifically FEMA , should take that into account in their planning.

Especially given that Obama, Napalitano, enc., should have already resigned upon claiming they could not possibly control illegal immigration with fences and patrols, I’m counting on them continuing right along with making the worst plan possible.

  89. Adaptation is obviously the prefered approach to so-called climate change. Certainly preferable to trying to reduce co2 emissions. So whats not to like?

  90. What next, I wonder: Flat cola, flat beer, flat wine; No one allowed to open a beverage with fizz because it’ll release the dreaded CO2 into the atmosphere. And I thought the chumps in Westminster were bad.

  91. when will the y generation wake up, all thay care about is i pods and emailing so please god help us before it is too late

  92. They should go after so-called climatologists and railway engineers who have sold the government BS like
    – Manhattan’s West Ave. will be flooded
    – winter snow will disappear
and got paid billions for their lies, much worse than any Ponzi scheme.

  93. Janet’s DHS is all about “man-caused disasters.” I do believe she can do the most about the biggest man-caused disaster, this administration, by keeping her gums flapping for the next two years. She’s a window.

And yes, a previous post is right, it’s the entire Kool-Aid drinking bureaucracy. The precautionary principle (I dream of a disaster and ask “why not?”) and mission creep are the wind beneath the bureaucrat’s wings.

Is this woman terminally stupid or what ? Do these idle politicians have to take classes in stupidity; or does it just come naturally to them ?

The lights are on but nobody is home; she is the epitome of the term “nest sitter” IMNSHO.

“Homeland Security” – providing for supervision of the ‘homeland’ (read as inmates) within as opposed to harmful forces from without … as an aside ‘homeland’ as a term has always sounded retarded to me; not PC, I know.

    .

  97. There is a reason – and it is not her size – why she is called “Big Sis”. And they railed at Bush for removing liberties. His policies were child’s play compared to what this administration has done – and in direct defiance of both Congress and the People.

  98. After reading WUWT for more than a year, where terms like ‘climate change’ and ‘environmental justice’ are quaint, laughable anachronisms, the news out of Washington, DC is like watching old black-and-white newsreels from the ’40s.

Unfortunately, our so-called ‘leaders’ are living in this strange ideological dreamworld, like the Politburo watching parades in the last days of the Soviet Union. Nobody has told them that ‘global warming’ was a hoax, that the war against ‘climate change’ was a fantasy.

Maybe it’s time to tell them.

What’s a ‘climate refugee’? Someone fleeing from average weather?

  101. Get a scare going. It doesn’t matter what. Capitlists, bankers, black marketeers, Jews, Muslims, Satanists, Communists, Fascists, Climate deniers, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Evolution, the Protocols of Zion, any weirdo you care to name. This is a national threat. We must respond with more security. I was amazed that the American people accepted the DHS so readily with its obvious dangers of breaching the constitution (for the safety of the nation, of course). What is it? Are the US military, the CIA and FBI not up to the job? Of course not. We need this overeaching organisation to keep us safe. Goodbye freedom and democracy. I never thought the best and last hope of mankind would actually commit suicide. Maybe the job will be left to England once again. (If we can get rid of these charlatan warmists).

Har! Next it will be “climate victim”. We are starting to see rapid movement by the US government towards “climate justice” I’m afraid. Get ready, this won’t be pretty. USEPA is already on the warpath.

  103. I wonder how they’ll convince the Mr ‘bama president to borrow more money from the Chinese though.

Or are they going to act the cap in the trade? :p

  104. She’s done so well stopping terrorism (oh wait, that was the FBI and some fellow passengers who stopped the Christmas day bomber – the crotch bomber – etc), she will no doubt get a handle on global warming/climate change, and with the help of her friends at the EPA and Health and Human Services, etc., save us all ….. from the reasonably priced energy that makes modern life possible.

No, that’s a weather refugee. A climate refugee is someone fleeing from the 30-year average of the weather in his home country.

Ah, stupid me. You already had the “average”… Forget my comment.

  107. The sinking Alaskan Arctic villages yet another scam (what a surprise). The North Slope and the Northwestern part of the state is for the most part pretty flat where it meets the sea. There are a number of villages near the water – which is where the food and boats are (whale, seal, walrus hunting). The closer to the water you are, the less work it takes to drag the food home.

If there is nothing much to stop either the wind or the seas in a storm, the storms will rearrange the coastline on a continual basis – which they do. Throw into the mix large chunks of ice (late season floes) getting moved around by the wind, and the villages are in continuous risk. It doesn’t have anything to do with global warming. It has everything to do with where and what they build coastal villages on. You see the same action on the those that choose to build on barrier islands on the US Gulf of Mexico, as the buildings get lawnmowed by hurricanes on a semi regular basis. It’s the first rule of Real Estate: Location; Location; Location.

Merry Christmas to one and all from Anchorage, where we would welcome about 15 degrees F of manmade global warming so we could get above 20 once in a while this winter. Skiing at zero F or low single digits is more work than fun. Cheers -

  108. Hi Janet, Brent here from the great white north, with a couple of suggetions as to how you can protect federal employees during “climate change” or whatever the hell you want to call it…
    1. When it’s cold outside, wear a hat, a pair of mitts or gloves, a warm jacket would be wise and some winter boots…LL Bean I believe has all these items for sale.

    2. When it’s hot out, wear appropriate “Summer wear” Sandals, shorts, Tee shirts and of course sunscreen
    3. If anyone is unfortunately caught wearing the wrong clothing for the weather, I recommend remaining in the company vehicle and turning on the heat and or A/C relavent to the outside air temperature

    Thanks very much Brent

p.s. My services don’t come free, but I help out when I can…
so if you could forward 50 million USD to an account of my choice I’m sure my advice
will be cheaper than any ideas and costs you’ll pass on to the taxpayers of the US of A

p.s.s. In my next email, I’ll discuss what to do if it rains

  109. The Department of Homeland Security was created to fill the vacuum left within the USA when the Department of Defense stationed all its troops in 175 countries around the world.

If DHS is going to combat global warming, who will be left to protect the US Mainland from invaders and/or terrorists?

  110. ……. “climatic jihad”. Is this the first explicit admission that climate change is truly a religion?

My concern is that they will target the “unbelievers” (climate d*****ist terrorists) as the easiest and most visible demonstration of positive action.

  111. Department of Homeland Security goes off the deep end – now plans to battle “climate change” in addition to terrorists

Does this mean that TSA will now have license to grope contributors to WUWT in order to ensure that they are not peddling “sceptic” propaganda?

    =============================

    Hunh?

Is Eric Holder, current head of the Dept of (Social) Justice, now gonna be able to sue God for presumed “environmental injustices” such as global warming, global cooling, or too much snow in Washington DC?

Hoo boy, this I gotta watch. (Did anybody bring the popcorn?)

  113. the leftists just consider gov’t a huge jobs program – they think everybody in world can go sit in a cubicle all day from 9-5 and pretend to work while all they’re actually doing is surfing the internet, and that somehow all the real work like growing food, building homes, hauling away trash, etc etc will still get done….that’s why you get no account, incompetent buffoons like napolitano, biden, obama, janet reno, etc – all of these idiots who’ve never accomplished anything or PRODUCED anything in their entire lifetimes…that’s who’s running the country…
